it aint always about how "good" a game is, theres also an enjoyability factor involved which wukong definitely had over astrobot and balatro if you prefer more combat heavy and story games

@ you’re correct and apparently more people/critics ENJOYED astronomy more. Also enjoyability isn’t the only factor, there’s a bunch of different factors that go into choosing the game of the year . “Better” isn’t a zero sum statement, it’s a collection of many different points of interests when it comes to the artistic validity of a property. I played wukong, I beat wukong, it was really good, but NOT game of the year material in my personal opinion. And it given its general reputation in the community, it’s metacritic score, and the results of the game awards it’s seems like my opinion is the common consensus when it comes to this topic. You can disagree, that’s fine, but you can’t act like it was robbed, like it’s a travesty, or that you didn’t see this coming in the first place, unless you’re just not connected to the gaming world at large. It wasn’t good enough, simple as that. And to be honest the entire field of games nominated for GOTY this year were fairly weak compared to last year 🤷‍♂️

@@mookiestewart3776 I don’t disagree with your general sentiment, more so that I don’t believe it matters how ”good” a game is critically if someone prefers the game over another. Out of all the games in GOTY I liked FF7 the most, do I think it was necessarily the best? No, probably not but the enjoy ability factor was there for me on top of the fact that the final fantasy series has a special place in my heart. Difference in opinion is all I’m trying to get at. 🤝

@ well the issue then is what criteria people use to determine how “Good” a game is. Since 90% of the vote goes to critics I would say they aren’t using “enjoyment” factor as the sole arbiter when determining what they vote for. Obviously that will be a big factor but not the sole one. And even beyond that I would think they use what made them enjoy a certain title so much. they likely look at the “wow” factor quite a bit as well, which in my opinion wukong was lacking in. Take last years GOTY competition for example, TOTK and BG3 both had all the makings of a true GOTY, but BG3 just had that little bit of extra “WOW” in its dna and how it resonated with the community as a whole, and so it rightfully won GOTY. It rekindled something in the player base and reminded people of why they enjoy this medium as a hobby, and don’t get me wrong TOTK did that as well (I doesn’t about 100 hours in that game) but not quite to the same extent. Now fast forward to wukong in this year and while it was a very well made game, it didn’t hit that “wow” note for the vast majority of its players , critics included. It was well designed, fun to play, pretty to look at, but it didn’t have that “pop” that people are looking for. It didn’t feel ……”inspired “, it felt derivative, at least to most people. TLDR: I wouldn’t have been mad if wukong won but I 100% understand why it didn’t

@@mookiestewart3776 I understand what you mean but I meant that the general audience (and not the critics) should feel free to vote on whatever they enjoyed playing the most during the year without the overhanging game scores weighing down on their decision. I don’t mind that astrobot won the game just wasn’t rlly for me.

It's also incorrect to say that the war allowed South Korea to "start with a clean slate" as the US occupation kept in place many of the existing institutions from the imperial japanese occupation and put former japanese collaborators in charge of those institutions. Simplified, South Korea was handed over to the chaebols.
