    hello Mr. P .... I'm a newbie to the ZK method. I physically hurled Scheper's book across the room after trying to read it for three days. So glad to have found your channel; you make the steep learning curve so much easier to negotiate. I wonder if you have made any videos on the topic of how to use ZK to organize writing a book? Thank you for your comments. I'm afraid I have not made any videos about using a ZK to organize the writing of a book. You MIGHT want to check out Bob Doto's *A System for Writing: How an Unconventional Approach to Note-Making Can Help You Capture Ideas, Think Wildly, and Write Constantly - A Zettelkasten Primer.* Although it does not (I think) talk about using a Zettelkasten to write a book, it does talk about moving from the creation of lots of Zettelkasten cards to organizing them into "structure notes," etc., which could bring you closer to writing something that you want to publish.

    Thank you for this video! I have a question: what if after having created cards ending in 1 and 1a, I create a card that I’d like to place after card ending in 1? Is there a way to number it? Or would it be a matter of finding a good enough place for that could be after 1a, for example?

    I realize this is a late comment, but are you still using an analog Zettelkasten in addition to Heptabase? I'm interested in an analog system, but it seems like most people end up switching to a digital system at some point.

    • @forrestrperry
      @forrestrperry 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not using an analog Zettelkasten anymore. Even when I was using it, I was backing everything up in Obsidian, where I like to do this thing I call "relevance-level tagging." It became too onerous to maintain both the analog Zettelkasten and the "enhanced" version of it it Obsidian (I put "enhanced" in quotation marks because some might argue that anything digital is always inferior to analog, as cell phones are clearly inferior to the rotary dial phones, *of course*). If I had started with Heptabase from the beginning, I likely would have used only Heptabase. But currently I am using Heptabase + Obsidian because (a) I love working within Heptabase, (b) one can't do relevance-level tagging in Heptabase, and (c) I had way too many notes in Obsidian for it to be other than a pain in the behind to move everything over to Heptabase.

    The greatest of the modern philosophers, Immanual Kant, wrote in the Critique of Pure Reason that we refine categories from the ideas we have, not the other way around. We don't start with categories as this video recommends. If you do that, then you are not collecting ideas but organizing data. I only found out about ZK about 2 weeks ago, and the idea of it got me pretty excited. Both my wife and I are learning about it so that we can use it for ourselves. Because we enjoyoy learning and making connections between ideas. Learning is a goal in and of itself. And if we don't write down the things we learn, they eventually get lost.

    What was described in this video, was it really Zettelkasten? I heard nothing about indexes and card identifiers. Or was it the video maker taking a famous word, Zettelkasten, and explaining his own thing instead? To me is sounded like he divides card boxes internally in smaller compartments by topic and then put cards in according to topic. That is not Zettelkasten, is it?

    • @forrestrperry
      @forrestrperry 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. There is no such thing as “really Zettelkasten” (and no such thing as “THE Zettelkasten method”). I didn’t realize that until reading a piece by Chris Aldrich that points out the variety of ways of using a Zettelkasten that predated Niklas Luhmann’s way of using a Zettelkasten (can’t find the piece right now, unfortunately). If you watch a little further into the video series, you’ll see that I pretty quickly abandoned the (very bad) idea of using folder cards. That way the number would give a clue as to the content. (you could also do this with a four digit number, by just adding an additional digit to the DDS number). Best question yet. The tool/system/software is not about the subjects or concepts or categories or even links. It is about ideas. Ideas don't come pre-categorized as academic or not. Most youtube videos on this topic are grossly misleading, misinformed, and frankly not helpful at all.

    it's a niche example but yes it seems that logseq should allow editing of the text while maintaining the ref link. heptabase looks more elegant but it costs also a lot more

    if you don't include biology, psychology and evolution in 1:27 then you are just getting misguided by those topics, is like trying to study architecture without soil mechanics or physics. you also should add some cybernetics to it.

      That's how librarians organize data.

    Example. You have a 10000 notes Zettelkasten. And you decide to let me use it. I have ONE idea and ONE note to put it in to your Zettelkasten. I have no idea what your Zettelkasten is about and which notes it contains. I do not know any relations existing between notes. I have no idea about the context surrounding each of your notes. Just BLANK MIND. How do i put my note in your Zettelkasten so it will be mindfully connected to as much of your existing notes as it can be? Please describe a step by step process of my interaction with your's Zettelkasten.

      It’s a keyboard shortcut I created using Keyboard Maestro for Mac. I could have used Alfred instead, but all my text-replacement shortcuts are via Keyboard Maestro these days. Maybe google “text replacement software” to find something that will work for you.
