Informative and entertaining. Brilliant. Thank you for making this. I learnt a lot..... especially if I include the stuff about the ossik and the minefield that is children's birthday parties. My last party was at age 6 - 54yrs ago..... that looks like a wise move to have evaded them since age 6.

I am researching medieval recipes and am wondering if it possible to include the recipes in the Zettelkasten? If so how? Or should I simply keep them in their own box?

Interesting use case-and relevant to the video I plan on releasing next, where I talk about medieval views on menstrual fluid while making a healthy yogurt-based dessert.
But to answer your question, I’d say keep the recipes themselves in a box separate from the box containing your idea cards (that is, outside of your Zettelkasten). If you need to make references to the recipes on your idea cards, you could come up with some way of doing that-perhaps something as simple as Rec1, Rec2, etc.

Hi, your videos are informative. I was wondering what is continuation of cards. For the cards shown in this video, how is the second card related to the first and the third card related to the second? Also are continuous cards linearly related? Is the third card related to the first?

Hmm. Have you by any chance already watched Video #3 in the series? That one MIGHT answer your question. If you HAVE already watched it and your question remains, let me know and I'll try to get back to you soon-ish (currently grading a bunch of end-of-semester papers, so my response time might be a little slow).

Great video! I like this a lot - instead of enforcing topics, you allow them to 'emerge'.
I still have some topic folders. For example: 1 History, which has sub-branches with 1.1 Political history, 1.2 Cultural history, and so on. I am still in a early phase of my zettelkasten, so I could still change some things. Perhaps I could leave this history folder, but try not to place every history related concept within this history folder, such as 'historicism'. Then I could also see how this concept could apply in different contexts, such as sociology for example, which would allow for more 'interdisciplinarity'.
As i was writing this, I was still trying to make sense of things. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

Thank you for your post. It's possible that the piece I just posted on my website a few minutes ago-a piece in which I lay out my reasons for no longer using folder cards-will provide you with some helpful guidance. You can find that piece here: www.fpnotes.io/why-i-stopped-using-folder-cards-in-my-analog-zettelkasten/
As you will see in that post, I think that any work that folder cards do in the way of organizing your idea cards is better done via maintaining the index section of your Zettelkasten (I've said little about the index in my videos so far, just fyi). When I finally get around to showing how I use Obsidian to back up and enhance my analog Zettelkasten, I will likely show how you can use folders in Obsidian (along with aliases) to do any of the work that you might be inclined to think folder cards should be doing within your Zettelkasten.
If you check out the post linked to above and continue to have questions, let me know. Oh, and I think you're right in the way you've characterized what I'm suggesting in this video: letting topics emerge while/after creating idea cards rather than imposing topics-or top-level categorization-before creating idea cards.

@@forrestrperry Thanks a lot for this thorough explanation! I was already subscribed to your newsletter, so I just received it in my inbox. And I also use Obsidian for my Zettelkasten, similair to Bob Doto, so a video where you show your Obsidian vault would be great. Again, thanks a lot!

I considered issuing an apology to you for the purpose of getting you off your mother's case. Instead, I put it on a folder card and filed it under "Not gonna happen."

I am definitely going to get her to issue an apology when I see her for the holidays.
