4:37 probably because sometimes you would create many topics in this 1.1.1 ,so you could create cards like 1.1.1-12..... so if you dont use letters or other symbols you would have a problem of double interpretation in the card and cards with the index duplicated because topic 12 of the 1.1.1 is 1.1.1-12... and the second subtopic of the 1.1.1-1 is 1.1.1-12 ,so you use the letter for avoid this problem 1.1.1-1b (sorry if my english is not so good ,i've been trying to improve my grammar these times 😅)
horde member here; i think the strength of the zettelkasten is in the emergent bottom up system not the classic hierarchical system of topic-subtopic-subsubtopic. i may be mistaken or not fully understanding but i recommend taking a quick look on luhman's sequence of events
Thank you for your comment, which only just now (2022-10-21) I am able to see (it seems TH-cam hides certain comments?). I agree that one strength of the Zettelkasten method is precisely what you have identified: an emergent, bottom-up system. In the fourth video in this series (released just a day or two ago), I talk about reducing and perhaps even eliminating what I call "folder cards." But I remain wedded to the idea that it's valuable to have some general subject areas when you first get going.
@@forrestrperry yes it could be helpful especially in the beginning when it's still vague + everyone is alredy used to the up down organization so it's more "automatic" to carry on to a certain point, anyways glad that you're doing this series it's really useful 😊
Hi FP, I clicked on your first link about folder cards, but it's asking for a login/password. When I subscribed to your website I didn't have the opportunity to set a password! I'm assuming you were linking to your newer video about not creating new folder cards?
Hi Kat. Sorry for things being messed up. The link that I MEANT to place under the video is this one: www.fpnotes.io/why-i-stopped-using-folder-cards-in-my-analog-zettelkasten/ That's my (non-video) explanation of why I stopped using folder cards. There is a video in which I SAY that I decided that creating folder cards is a bad idea, but the place where I actually EXPLAIN why I arrived at that decision is the webpage that link should take you to. If you're just now checking out my videos, I recommend starting with the one from the old-school Zettelkasten series that has a #1 in its title (not to be confused with my brand new Obsidian series, the first video of which also has a #1 in its title). Just keep in mind that despite what I say in that first video and maybe one or two more in the old-school Zettelkasten series, I now strongly believe that creating folder cards is a bad idea. I hope that helps. If you have other questions, let me know. Oh, and at the moment you don't need to have a password to access the content on my site. You should be able to get to it just by typing the following into your web browser's search/address bar: www.fpnotes.io
I like your approach to Zettelkasten and your video. But...please change the lighting for both your cards and for yourself! Thanks a lot for your work!
Thanks for the suggestion. I noticed only several days ago that you made this suggestion a while back. I hope you will find that the more recent videos I've released have adequate lighting in them (I'm referring to the last several videos in the series of videos that have numbers in the thumbnails).
Thank you for the vid and for excluding loud intro and exit music.
