Skiing The Waterman Couloir on Mt Stanley
May 26th, 24. Headed up to the Stanley glacier on a cloudy overcast day to try to find some couloir skiing. We found powder and flat light in the Waterman couloir. Made for tricky but great quality skiing. Still very wintery up high!

Hard Skiing in Grizzly Couloir (Raw Footage)

Fun day out skiing the Rogers pass classic Grizzly couloir. Conditions were ok in the top of the line but degraded as we descended into variable crusty hardpack/ice lower in the line. Recent conditions across BC and AB have been brutal. High freezing levels kept us away from the backcountry and now that things have re frozen skiing is rough. Yesterday (Jan 4, 2024) we went to check out the Phantom couloir in Yoho. We were surprised to find a deep snowpack and some fresh snow. So great to finally ski a bigger line in the Rockies after a slow start to the season and an unstable season last year. Hopefully more to come! Not many options for skiing in Rogers pass this November. Headed up to STS for my buddy Mat's first turns of the year. This season was a rough one. Alberta and British Columbia had very low snow years causing challenging and deadly avalanche conditions. Big lines where out of the question for the entire year and an early summer caused a harsh and abrupt end to the season. It was a good year to step back and learn and thats what I did. Nice job boyz - almost did Kahl face a few days after you posted your MIN. We walked up on the glacier in summer and its crazy the amount of cracks up there - not to be underestimated ...
Yea its very broken up there, who knows how long those lines will still be accessible. Gotta ski them while we can!

What length of rope did you use? I was also turned away on this line trying to climb up it directly, id love to go back and get it all! Nice work.
We used 2 30m sections but on better snow years u can get away with 30m
Why not hike up the ski line? Pretty impressive hike without the rope and reusing someone else's old lines.

Nice work boys - seemed like a lot of work to get down the line though - good thing you had a pin with you. Try the Shelf at the Pass if you haven't done so yet - better skiing and less muking around with gear once you've done the inital rap to enter the line- although that is part of the adventure ... 🙂

Not that worried your pretty secure to the slope with crampons and ice axes. And we did not leave the ropes behind you rappel on 2 strands and then pull one at the bottom

I’d be tempted to send it over that first small cliff spot, landing looks pretty good and what’s the drop… 10-15 ft?
It’s true the cliff is small and would be easy to air the issue is you land on a 50 degree slope above a much larger cliff and you would be cooking!
