Jason is a DIY tragic who would rather build it himself than pay someone to do it for him. In addition to travel videos, this channel will include some videos on his creations ranging from campervan builds to landscape gardening - Jason can do half a job on anything!
Vanlife vlog - Building a simple Car Camper
I'm Jason, a retired mechanical engineer who has opted for the simple life. I built myself a campervan, rented out my house and now live fulltime on the road, vlogging my days where I just do all the stuff I love.....bushwalking, mountain biking, (paragliding?) and generally exploring new places.
My son mentioned he would like to do some camping in his car, so we spent the weekend putting together a removable bed frame, using the Bunnings carpark as a workshop.

Glad I could help you with your insomnia 😂
If you end up venturing past the great ocean road in warrnambool and port fairy and looking for a place to stay i have a block in the little town killarney which is between port fairy and warrnambool that you are more than welcome to park at. you will have it to your self and no neighbours or cars driving past. its not much to look but its right by the killarney beach which has great snorkelling.
Thanks for the offer, Mitch! Unfortunately I've already started heading back towards Geelong as I have a few things planned over the coming week. 😊👍
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces No worries at all look forward to the video to see what you got up to
Silly question: when travelling with you they could spread some of their gear into your van, and also use some of your gear, like cooking, but if travelling solo will they have enough storage for cloths, food, cooking equipment.? may be your son may consider a rooftop box, cheers, Garry
They'll have enough space for weekend trips, possibly buying take away food, but yeah, anything longer will be hard to take enough stuff.
Yay! Loved this 😊 Knowledge sharing with your son, the Bunnings carpark construction (!), The Dronage (how do you make the city look so beautiful?😜) and much more. Enjoy the GOR, one of my favourite drives. The footage from the drone will be amazing - can’t wait for Saturday!
Thankyou 😁 I love the sunsets over the city. There was one night I was in my son's apartment, and the full moon dropped directly between 2 buildings in the city...looked amazing! Limited dronage from the GOR, unfortunately....it's all national park 😕
The son seems like a fantastic man
Absolutely!👍
I love the Bunnings car park construction! Great work guys!
😂 with the noise of the impact driver echoing off the building...we weren't discreet!
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces😂😂
Thanks for sharing. Good to see you back on the tools, Jason. What fun to be had. 😊 l am looking forward to your future travels.
Thanks Helen. 😁👍
Just wondering, why not just use an easy set-up tent?
Yeah, they've used a tent before but not very comfortable or secure. Plus we were bored and needed something to do on the weekend 😂
@ 😂😂😂😂
Looks great! I was wondering where they were going to put their things till I saw the lift up bed at the end. Great idea! Looking forward to seeing how it goes on the trip you’re planning, & also looking forward to seeing the great ocean road!
Thanks Sally. Yeah, a really deep bin under the back. We'll see how it goes. It's only for odd weekends away.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces my brother got a really good set of insulated window covers for his car cheap on Temu if they’re looking for something to cover the windows when they’re in it.
@sallyb1433 not a bad idea. Might be worth a look. 👍
I didn’t realise that colour preference could be inherited! 😂
😂 I may have strongly suggested that was a good colour.

I really enjoyed your episode about your son's car camper! I have a VW Caddy Maxi that I'm planning to convert in a similar way next month, as I wish to do some travel.. Converting VW Caddies is quite popular in the UK and EU, and the ideas you both shared are very much in line with that. I can't wait for your Great Ocean Road adventure!
Thanks Paul. It was only a quick job, but hopefully gives you ideas👍 You'll have a lot more room with the Caddy, that's for sure!😁
Looking forward to the Great Ocean Road. ☺🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
Should be a pretty good video!😉
Reminds me of Foresty Forest setting up/working on his new van build in the middle of a big-box hardware store car park! I guess it's the best place to be when you realise you need a missing bit of material or hardware quick!
😂 exactly! Saved so much travel time when we needed to go back.
Necessity is the mother of invention! You're a great help Jason and I'm sure your son will now enjoy a bit of luxury when he goes camping. 👍
Thanks 😁 we'll give it a try in a few weeks.
Cool set up
Thanks. Very simple but low cost "to see if we like it" was the plan.
Irish couple Glen and Mado on TH-cam, who are travelling around the country did a similar thing to their old RAV4. It is very impressive with space for a small fridge and cooker.
Ok, nice. They'd have a bit more space to play with in a RAV4. Pretty tight in the Puma, but it'll do for a start 😁
Interesting 😊
Quick and easy to see how they go 😁
Noice!😊
Thanks 😁👍
LIke father, like son. Another blue Ford 😁 The only potential issue with that bed frame set up is having enough space for the rest of their camping gear. I would have gone with a good quality self-inflating mattress (like Exped) to save more on space. But good job in making a bed frame fit. 👍
Bought that one just before my Ford employee discount ran out 😂 We did consider and inflatable but the issue was the width. Fortunately there's a really deep bin in the back, but we'll see how they go. 😁
Storage is always an issue. The front seats can store a few items when the bed is made up. Kurt will have to work out ventilation as well.
@jazzycool2950 absolutely. For weekend overnights, they'll manage for now. He's planning to get some weather shields so he can leave the windows cracked a bit. Just need to sort out some bug mesh 😁
@ Window socks/sunshade can be used to make into a makeshift bug screens.
@ That’s interesting. I’m looking for a solution to the bug/mosquito issue. I’ll look into it 👍
Cool, a bed in the back of a Ford Focus... *cries in 6'5"*
😂 yeah that's a spanner in the works. Maybe get used to lying on your side with your knees bent 😁😉
Love watching Jason.
Thanks Michael 🙂
Great video and great effort Jason and Kurt. Talk about a fast build. I'm doing a similar build in the back of my little 4 x 4. I normally just remove the front LH passenger seat and sit a section of sleeping foam in the floor pan and sleep there. Kind of like sleeping in the Lunar Module in 1969 - cramped! I need a more elevated version so I can stretch out and utilize storage space underneath. I have to remove the front seat to achieve 180cm (Which I'm not) and build a 2 section version so as to leave the back platform permanently installed. I don't know how the law stands with the removal of all bar the drivers seat. I haven't been questioned about it as yet by the powers that be........ Happy camping young man. Cheers, Sean.
Thanks Sean. I think the only time you'll have issues with removed seats is if you need to do a roadworthy inspection. I've removed seats to carry my bike in the past and also never been questioned.
Gday mate, thanks for your videos! Love them, used to have an old 89 LWB Hiace that i miss dearly after watching, might see you on the road soon!
Thanks Lucius ☺️ Yeah, I went without a van for a year or so while my current one was in order....it's so good being able to wander off whenever you want 😁👍
Ha agreed! just trying to work out if i keep my GU patrol and tack a small caravan on the back or get rid of it and get a transit/hiace. I love being able to pull over, close the curtains and hop in the back. Anyway thanks for the reply, safe travels, enjoy the great Ocean Road. Do a video on Warrnambool! 😎
@dogmanxz yeah, definitely agree on the convenience of a van. Plus no trailer gives a bit more flexibility in some respects. Pluses and minuses to both options. Not sure I have enough time in Warrnambool to cover everything, but will get some footage 👍
I can see the novelty of sleeping in the car with two people is going to wear off really fast. To be comfortable on the road, they're going to need stuff like, fridge, power station, stove, etc. A roof tent would be a better option...or better still a van. If the roof tent or van is a no-go, maybe get a tailgate tent or car tent.
At the end of the day, everyone makes do with what they have and what fits into their budget. In reality, they could just use a swag, but this is an option that's about the same cost and offers far better comfort and security. Once his budget allows, he does plan to get a van. But that will be in the future.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Totally agree. At the end of the day, money talks 😬
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I car camp in a Prius and the tailgate tent for under $90 was a total game changer.
@Sydneywizard that's a pretty good price!👍
Turned Out Pretty Cool! Great Ocean Road, Yes Please!!
Thanks Jason ☺️ You'll have to strap in for the Great Ocean Road video.....I think it will be a big one!
So now, the pop top roof, rear hatch canvas tent and the car will be full. :)
😂 definitely on the list for future upgrades....though buying a van might be easier.
Morning, I enjoyed seeing the build. Can't wait to see it in action
@DaisyLarson4936 we'll see how well they sleep 😁
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces well without being too rude, I thought it wouldn't be much use on a honeymoon LOL
@DaisyLarson4936 😂😂 possible clearance issues?😉
It's a problem that you release a new video so early in the morning as I play the drinking game every time you cut up a banana. I'm usually drunk by 7:25am every Saturday and Wednesday morning. You kind of answered one of my questions in this video. I was wondering how long you can keep doing this and if you have somewhere to go if/when you lose your travelling mojo. And yes, today I discovered you have a property in Geelong. So do I (Clifton Springs) but I can't imagine ever wanting to go back there to live. It's nice but... I only watch TH-cam, not contribute, and am wondering if doing the video sometimes feels like a drag and takes away your enjoyment of a location. My last question is, as I'm looking at doing something on a much smaller scale and not full time, how many times have you been at a track and just had to turn away because your van couldn't cut it? You don't seem to hesitate (unless you've just washed your van) to leave the asphalt but just curious to know if you think you've missed anything great because your van wasn't suited to the road. You did say below you might do an episode about stealth parking, maybe a Q&A episode could be fun.
😂😂 love it! Fewer banana cutting sessions required 😁 I don't see me ever living in Geelong again either. Planning to sell the house in a few years and roll the cash into my superannuation...try to reduce my tax! Sometimes it's a bit of an effort to do videos, but mainly when I'm doing things that I don't think are all that exciting. When I'm in new places, it's actually quite fun putting them together. I turn away from tracks more frequently due to fear of scratching my paintwork 😂. I'll only go down tracks if I'm confident I can make it out again and if it's too rough, I can take the bike instead, or just walk. Given that I've spent the last year mostly between Sydney and Port Stephens and always found new things to do and see, I don't think you would run out of places to go without off road capabilities. Sure, there will be some extras places you could visit and stay, but I don't feel like I'm lacking in my travels.
it often looks like you may come a cropper on the MTB tracks, but that looked like a bad fall, not good to have the scenery (i.e ground) that up close and personal, ... had a good laugh when your laser eyes were piercing the back of the other drivers head. I can see the black clouds are parting and fair weather is coming, stay safe, cheers, Garry
Thanks Garry 😊 The bike spat me off good and proper! Fortunately no real damage. I think this year will have far less annoyances than last. Always moving forward 😁👍
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces and I hope the arm faired OK as well, do you think you may start venturing back towards Newy to continue your lessons ?
@gold4leaf luckily my other arm took most the impact. The more people I talk to about paragliding, the more I think I should continue. It's a big time commitment...more than I originally thought, but in the long term should be a lot of fun.
I'm curious about your dji neo; I have not long ago purchased one, and I noticed that it's your neo you fly out over water I believe. May I ask , do you have any issues with the flying over water as I do kayak camping and want some shots from over water back at camp sites and friends kayaking on water. Thanks
From what I've seen online, don't let it go over water in the autonomous modes. I only go over water when using the RCN3 remote. I've had no issues at all, but keeping more than 3m above the water is also good insurance, so it doesn't attempt to use its sensors to detect the surface.
So, cool. I met you at Pt Danger today. Got to have a chat with you. Usually watching you on our big screen TV, so it was cool to see the blue van, and Jason in real life. Made my day. Thanks
You need to stare harder😂😂😂
😂👍 my heart just wasn't in it.
The bridge strikes in Footscray are a thing I don’t miss! Extra points when they roll the truck over doing it.
😂👍
After the divorce is finalised will you be hooking up with Rebecca? It would be great to see you both banana cutting in harmony in your opening scene. 😅
now that would be fun :)
😂😂 I'm not sure I know any Rebecca's well enough to be spooning bananas with!
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Spooning with bananas...better than flossing with them lol
@DaisyLarson4936 😂😂👍
You got out of the east coast of NSW just in time. It's been wild weather here for the past few days with even wilder strong winds. Plenty of trees tipped over. I'm sure not very pleasant when in a van. Heck, it's not pleasant inside a brick house. Stay safe.
Looks like it's been crazy up there! Hope you've pulled through ok.
You are extremely proficient on that bike, us viewers get the adrenaline rush too
Thanks, I'm only ok but it's great that it's fun to watch. 😁👍
I totally feel you not being motivated, coz I'm like that especially on cloudy and rainy days 😑 Take care of yourself, mate. We don't want you to have another injury 😉
Yeah, the overcast weather doesn't help! I think I best stick to mountain bike tracks... walking tracks are dangerous 😂
Next time you’re in Melbourne, you might want to check out the Lysterfield and Silvan MTB tracks.
Yeah, been there a few times in the past but worth another visit for sure!👍
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I'll be a Lysty next Thursday for my birthday! How long are you down in Melbourne for?
@ollien3359 nice! Thursday 30th? I haven't ridden there for years.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Thursday the 23rd - I will be heading there mid-morning for a ride (possibly with the kids) and then my mum is bringing down my sister and brother in law who are over from Chile for a picnic by the lake. I haven't been to Lysty for a few months - I know they've been doing some excellent work there maintaining the trails. My big ride is from Cheltenham to Lyterfield (via Dandenong creek trail), do the blue loop and then ride home - but who would want to do that on their birthday with a belly full of cake?
@ollien3359 sounds like a great way to spend your birthday! I'll be on the other side of Melbourne all week, unfortunately, but should try to get down that way in the next few weeks for a ride. Happy birthday, mate!😁
Hmm wondered about the ex as you mentioned it before. Good that you get on with your two sons. Good luck. Never easy for any one. New chapter when you leave Melbourne this time.
Hopefully the final step will be sorted in the next few weeks, then clear skies ahead 😁👍
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces On another note, I’m seriously looking at the Neo as my first drone. I want it for our yacht racing Do you think your son’s Drone with the 4 x Gimbal would be a better investment. I would like it to be able to adjust to more angles? I do love the follow factor and the cost of your model. 😀 Your footage has been amazing. Is that all done on the DJI Neo? If so that’s good enough for me.
@Yachtvancar get the Mini 3 or mini 4k. I'm not sure if the difference between those 2 but the neo struggles with wind, so if you want to chase yachts, you'll need more power. The Minis also have much better picture quality. You won't have any of the following modes with the DJI Minis, but I think it would be more suitable. I will buy one at some stage too, so I can fly in stronger wind conditions.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces thank you so much Jason. Good things to consider re wind. However, I really do like the ‘following’ mode. I’ll buy yours and you can buy a mini LOL
@Yachtvancar 😂 I'll probably use both because I like the following too. DJI just released the Flip which is a bigger version of the Neo. It is better in the wind but not as good as the Mini. The flip also has the same picture quality as the Mini....but if course, more expensive than the Neo.
I cracked up at your staring at the people till they moved lol. Hope you didn’t hurt yourself too badly with that stack. You’re very brave with the hectic tracks you ride. Disappointed to see normal banana spooning lol 😂 Hope you’re doing ok with all the wild weather that’s been happening. I’m camping near the river & the lower camp ground right near where my caravan is parked is completely underwater 😬 I have everything ready to go in case of needing to make a quick exit. I don’t know what happened to summer this year, it didn’t seem to stay for long lol
😂 can't do specialised banana slicing in every video. It a very complicated process 😁 The weather's actually been fine down here. I even avoided a big storm that came through Melbourne when I was in Geelong. Hope you don't get flooded out! Doesn't sound like fun. Fortunately didn't do too much damage when I stacked, but did get blood on my sheets that night 🙄
@ I’ve been anticipating all the new ways you’d be cutting your bananas lol 😂 Glad you didn’t get hurt too badly & that you managed to avoid the wild weather!
Great video omg ouch not fun getting hurt as you get older could see it coming when you were going over those rocks your welcome to have our horrendous weather only just got power back late yesterday 2 days without electricity
2 days with no power! Wow, sounds like it's been really rough up that way. Hope you haven't sustained too much damage from it. I'll stop complaining about the cold, overcast days down here 😂 And yeah, riding over rocks is always pushing my luck 😂
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces rough is understatement still a lot haven’t got power yet but we survive pulled out my camp stove that was a blessing at least was able to make cuppa & cook haven’t driven around too much a lot of trees down tho .enjoy Melbourne I’m sure it’s heading your way 🤭 nah hopefully went out to sea

What the heck? It’s supposed to be summer! Not that I’m complaining! It’s a balmy 21 here in Taree.

Oh wow! That's colder than Melbourne 😂
You probably have mentioned it before but what mapping app do you use for tracking your rides?
I'm just using Strava to record them. Also use Trailforks to find MTB trails.
Another great video Jason. The stack you had on the bike at relatively slow speed did some damage. That said, the speed with which you negotiate those rocky bends is frightening and skillful. All the best with your red tape and paperwork. It will be a thing of the past one day soon. The black cloud will dissipate. Take care and looking forward to your next video. Cheers, Sean.

Yeah, won't be long before I head north again 😁
Good to hear the scenery is much nicer North when are you paragliding again? Newcastle is a top spot 👍
@DebraLoosemore not sure or even if I'll get back to paragliding. It's a very big time investment to get to the point where I can fly in more locations.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces maybe you could try wind surfing in Lake Macquarie they fly along there with the right conditions 😊
@DebraLoosemore yeah, thought about that but the problem is storing the board inside the van. Paragliders fold up very small, which is one reason why I went that way.
I can see the attraction, but my kidneys are hurting just watching you! Another very enjoyable video, Jason. Keep on enjoying! 👍 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
😂thanks Robyn!👍
Great way to kick off a wet weekend in Gloucester, watching a Jason vlog. 🎈 Hope you son recovers quickly so you can get together while your near him. 'Black clouds' seem to be a part of the life process. You are surrounded by many digital friends.
Thanks Steven! 😊 It really nice to be able to share things I do with everyone here!👍
Ooops, Morning! I'm behind the times atm (in Brisbane haa haa) so much later to watch than usual. Will you be heading down the Great Ocean Road any time soon? I've recommended you to my inlaws who are going down to Melbourne in their camping truck and thinking of going that way.
I might do a great Ocean road run in the coming few weeks...not totally sure yet.
