What is the Theme of RWBY? - An Analysis
Friend of the channel @thejudgmentalcritter6584 (Thanks for the inspiration!) asked, "What is the Theme of RWBY?". This video analysis is my answer. This time, we will be going through what I believe is the central narrative theme of RWBY and determine how... effective Rooster Teeth in conveying it. Enjoy!
Also I would like to hear your thoughts in the comments as to what you think of RWBY's themes.

0:20 died laughing and almost fell out of my chair from leaning so for back. The sound me made hahahahaahhaha!
Todd from Bojack Horseman said, "You can't keep doing sh*tty things and then feel bad about yourself like that makes it okay, you need to be better!" If they never learn from their mistakes, there's no guarantee that they won't do anything like them again. What good is admitting your mistakes if you don't learn or grow from it in any meaningful way? This is why it's hard to believe they're supposedly meant to be the big heroes who save Remnant.
LILY THATS YOUUUUUUU
Wow! All these arguments are terrible and each one is worse than the last. How is that even possible???
Tbh I came for the lesbians And stayed for the lesbians My gay ratio is on point. I spotted these queers from day 1. I ignored the straight shit, cuz i knew it was gay. You know what i have a high G/S ratio. The vindication i got from the comfirmation kiss was sweet. Every moment, every interaction, every gay longing moment(even long distance).. I caught it. The red like roses lyrics? I caught it. yellow Beauty, black the beast. Writing was piss poor, but i caught it! Contrary to popular belief vol 1-3 was cruddy and the story got better each volume.
I watch it by chance a long time ago, now I say this is my fav series!
Actually did my final degree project on this. Long story short, as you touched upon, evil villains or races are used as METAPHOR (of negative aspects of the psyche) rather than as characters. And that's ok! It's another way to tell a story and no lesser for it. Sometimes the themes can be told more effectively by using them.
The skeleton of Rwby is really good! If they can give the IP to people who understood where it could gone and where it can go
21:03 Someone likes P5:IP.
Man. Imagine being so pathetic as to waste your time obsessing over a show that was made as a fun side project between friends because it doesn't have Shakespeare quality writing. Some people, right?
I honestly think RWBY as a whole doesn’t have any general themes about what it wants to be or wanting to tell us. It gets frustrating when CRWBY doesn’t how to write something that relates to the audience.
@periodicpete, I'm so sorry, but you do kinda sound like Lily with a bad mic.
What I got was RWBY can be about figuring it out. Kinda explains the story. Haha.
2:21:55 this part gets under my skin. “I’m not saying white people, especially white queer people, can never truly understand oppression. I mean, trans people exist.” According to this person, the oppression that lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, pansexuals, aces, and intersex people experience doesn’t count if they’re white.
12:18 Yeah, in hindsight, they should've had the two interact more before Pyrrha gets reduced to, well, cinders.
spoiler alert: yes. They actively use humanities idea that a people can't all be evil to hunt humans, using tactics that manipulate the good in others to get close enough to strike. This is, by definition evil.
Btw this guy has a video on MHA titled "My Hero Academia: A Shallow Waste of Time". Would you be interested in reacting to it? Also wtf was that "wHiTe QueR pEoPLe RuIn EVERYTHING!111" like as a white queer person that guy in the video can fuck off 💀
yang obsession with blake made more sense to me after reading a comment that blake is practically raven: Edgy, dark color. she abandoned her at some point, was into a blond guy at some point. Rwby is gone by now but it could have been interesting to see a plot point whether if yang is trying to fill a hole with some similar to who she already had an obsession.
The theme is adults suck watch us do it our way *procced to screw it up*
2:49:18 Okay so I did a bit of research and I think the reason why some people think Toga is Bisexual. In Volume 19 of mha there is prototype designs for toga and one of the notes said on one of the notes it says “She always looks like she’s in love. She admires the person she loves and favors them to the point where she wants to be them. It doesn’t matter if it’s guy or girl?”. In the villains arc she says that she loves Stain, Deku, and Ochako and says “I’m happy as long I can “fall in love” a lot.” Take some of this with a grain of salt because it might be a mistranslation or people misinterpreting what Toga is saying, this isn’t concrete proof that Toga is bi and this is an explanation on why people think she’s bi. 2:52:07 I tried to find an article where Hori said that Toga is Bisexual but nothing came up but one article from Comicbook.com and it didn’t even have an interview and it was just some guy getting the info that toga’s bi from a tweet. (I might be wrong on this because there are many interviews with Horikoshi about mha and please correct me if I got some info wrong)
It would have been super ballsy to just have Ruby die in the Ever After and be brought back as something else. Shame RT is allergic to anything but playing it safe
The theme in RWBY is ultimately futility and nihilism, not necessarily because the writers were aiming for it, but because the writers clearly don't believe in any of the ideals the 'heroes' of the story espouse. The story claims value of a simple soul? The writers ultimately depict it as naive or childish. The story claims that they must unite and work together? The writers ultimately depict that people would rather choose to allow their differences to divide them. I could go on, but the point is that while the characters are supposed to represent optimism, that hope to keep moving forward even in the face of despair...the writing makes it clear that the ones writing the script don't actually believe that.
I think that what some people meant with the moral argument is that the fact that Frieren puts such an emphasis on the question whether or not coexistence is possible (as opposed to other shows with inherently evil races) and concludes with no may give some people who aren’t radicalised in any way the message that you cant live with certain races in coexistence. Those people might then have that seed of bigotry planted in their minds and a basic pipeline situation could happen. I of course don’t subscribe to this idea, but this was the only way I could kind of see some sensible point being made by the moral argument.
Overtime, I realised that I loved RWBY a bit by pity. I love the series but yeah, it’s like a car who takes heavy drifts. This may be explain why my favorite character is Salem. Because she is the only one who is somewhat consistant in the entire series in matters of point of view, motivation and background (also the fact she is on the background mostly spares her to be dragged in the ride). So much so, that I have made an ongoing a fanfiction crossed with Warhammer « RWBY 40k - Salem, the Immortal Empress of the Imperium. » from me, GundamNinshu (yes, my name is random and I love it). The premise is: what if the two Gods throws Salem on Terra after she betrayed them, met the Emperor of Mankind and allies with him in his quest of unifying Mankind? Yeah, my fanfic is not perfect, especially at the beginning. First, the obvious fact that English is not my first language and two that my first chapters where just me throwing ideas in the branches to see what are the ones who works and only in the latter chapters it began to assemble itself. So, the story that I am trying to give here Kaiser is Salem trying to rebuild a family with the Primarchs by slowly moving on from Oz while her sons are confronted with the conséquences of her actions. Along with the fact that her and the Emperor doesn’t get along well, especially since they have differing visions of the Imperium. Finally but not least, Salem discovering more and more that the Xenos and especially Chaos have the potential to destroy all of her efforts. What do you think about this premise? Are my themes fleshed out in my story like it supposed to be?
IS THAT A BOONDOCKS REFERENCE?
Whether there is malice behind their actions or they are simply intelligent and hungry predators is irrelevant. The point is not the intent behind their actions, the point is that their actions are in and of themselves a source of profound human suffering. What does it matter if they mean or understand the suffering they inflict or that it is a bad thing? They have shown a supreme lack of concern or comprehension of the basic idea that "what I do is bad". They do not feel guilt or concern for the suffering of their prey, and fundamentally cannot comprehend that it could even be a "bad" thing. Worse, they have been shown to feign the emotions we so desperately want them to have; THEY LIE to try and gain sympathy or advantage over their prey. They do this because humans want to empathize with them and achieve understanding. This is the weakness they exploit both in and out of universe. They KNOW we want to see something redeemable in them, to see some sign that they can be changed, and they may not understand WHY, but they mimic what they think we want to hear in order to get close enough to slit our throats. These creatures have a fundamentally alien and incompatible mental framework with that of humans. They exploit our empathy in order to predate upon us, and feel absolutely nothing for all the suffering they inflict. All attempts to reform or socialize them have failed. These monsters are an existential threat, and have made it clear that its humans or demons. And I choose HUMANS. These pests deserve only extermination. Anyone expressing sympathy must be kept away from the heaviest fighting. The entire species should be eradicated from thw face of the earth.
Rwby writer were just horrible at their jobs. No understanding of anti militarism or racism & were horrendous at world building & character focus & never did any leg work to confront the misogynistic racist homophobic transphobic ableist & even antisemitic biases they had & bled into their work and that permeated work culture at the company.
not the tony montana!
To me I don't see Demons as conventionally evil in the sense a human can be evil, the demons are just doing what they've evolved to do and will always do, thus is is less of a moral imperative and more a survival imperative for the other races in that world to deal with them whenever they turn up to threaten their people. Its kind of like encountering a scorpion, its gonna do what it does, the only difference is you might be able to pick up a scorpion and relocate it, whereas demons are a lot more active and purposeful in their actions, so relocating them isn't really an option, and rehabilitation is impossible. The closest one can get to dealing with them morally is giving them one warning to leave, and if they don't then do what ya gotta do.
You got me in the first half, ngl. Big agree on the Ironwood stuff. I will never forgive team RWBY, or the writers especially, for screwing over Ironwood as bad as they did. They couldnt even make him a competent villain. TLDR: I tried to think of a theme for RWBY and I just could not pinpoint just one and its not in the good way. RT couldn’t even write a halfway decent story about Unity, I think Horton Hears A Who somehow did that better especially with the ‘We Are Here’ scene. Heck, a prime example of Unity is the ‘Under Pressue’ scene in Happy Feet 2. -I forgot bout the Simple Soul/Keep Moving Forward thing since it’s been so long since either had popped up in the story, not to mention how badly the latter gets obliterated by ‘You’re perfect just the way you are’. Even then, to me, the way RT wrote the ‘Keep moving forward’ “theme” in RWBY is more like the bullheaded ‘keep moving past obstacles no matter what and no matter who you screw over’, rather than the encouraging ‘keep moving forward/keep learning from every experience you can’ or ‘keep moving forward because there are better days ahead/a future to fight for’. -To me, it comes across that way cuz the consequences for the girls’ actions get hand waved away either by the plot or by other characters, to the point where they just bulldoze past actually using their brain cells and are just doing shit cuz plot needs to happen. The writers bullshittery/laziness is incidentally translated through what the characters do or say; RT doesn’t want the girls to face consequences so something interrupts them before it can happen, or whoever is calling them out is made to be the bad guy, OR it happens off screen ex. Weiss gettin over her racism somehow. (Also, to me, that Vol 9 scene of Ruby breaking down, both Ruby and Jaune were annoying. It’s like one broke idiot calling another idiot broke.) -Each Volume of RWBY has always felt like lazy/half-baked attempts at in depth story telling, which further drives home how disconnected RWBY is. The fact that every Volume can somehow contradict one or more of the previous ones is abysmal. That’s something expected from a long running series like Naruto or One Piece. I think it also drives home how weak the beginning of RWBY is. Even if Volumes 1-3 have some cohesion, they’re made moot with the stupidity of the later volumes and only goes to show how weak the writing truly is, both in terms of character/world building/main story stuff. The girls are barely built up in the first volume (unless you’re Jaune), and Ruby herself isn’t truly going through changes throughout the volumes that warrant the Vol 9 shit. It says smth when RT has to create Knockoff Wonderland just to barely focus on Ruby herself. Also also, I never believe the ‘It was planned from the start’ bullshit. With how stitched together the volumes and even the episodes feel, I highly doubt many plot points were planned out (An example being the maidens). You’d think the writers would actually get better at writing and continuity once they became a more “serious” company, but this is the same company where animators and storyboarders don’t communicate, so what did I expect. That all being said, if I were to come up with some running themes, it’d be: “Redemption is for Cute Anime Girls only”, “Even if its their fault, cute anime girls are never at fault”, “Screwing people over is okay, if you’re a cute girl”, “All proper character development is for Jaune Only”, “If characters/story are written well, its on accident and the writers will proceed to do everything they can to reverse it”, “Very complex subjects, but written by people who don’t care to do research or actually delve into the complexity”, “Desperation”, “Sidelining the ever loving fuck out of the main protagonist”, “Keeping things vague so we can give ourselves time to come up with bullshit”, so on and so forth. To end off this ramble, there are a lot of mistakes and mishaps and attempts at good writing in RWBY, it’s barely mid. Barely a 3/10. But one of the things I’ll never forgive (besides what they did to Ironwood), is what they did with the whole Silver Eyed Warriors thing. Or lack thereof, I guess. They give Ruby the Deus Ex Machina, but don’t ever truly build upon it in meaningful ways. It’s such a waste.
Loss because I lost Yang 😔
its so bad that me and my posse have regularly made a game out of simply EXPLAINING what rwby is even about, we always have a different answer XD
Sad but true. Rwby is basically the sandbox for fanfiction stories. Everyone is so underdeveloped or uncharacterized that you can basically do whatever the hell you want with it. There is no theme in rwby you have to make it yourself 😂
The theme, script, and morals all reflect on the writers/artist btw. It’s a psychological thriller in the behind scene. And it’s a wonder why the stories messages is all fanfiction on top of their own canonically fiction. Or better yet, based off one man’s version of the world and then the other taking control with what’s given to him. We gave RWBY too much expectations and forgiveness, promoting a cycle of incompetence.
Obviously RWBY is about the themes we missed along the way
”Themes are for 8th grade english papers” -Someone, probably
6:00 Watching a real voice actor in the same room as Ruby Rose is freakin' night and day, man. I never took the "ruby voice bad" discourse too seriously and this is straight up my waking call.
Off topic, fantastic video btw, but I'm surprised no rwby discussion brought up the fact that RWBY has technically FIVE power-system
Tbh i prefer how the team were handled in that blazblue crossover Even tho imo the other franchises lore is more interesting than rwby imo
ngI i need what you had during that cap about moving forward
Have you ever thought about making a video on osamu speech with the reporters (after aftokrator invasion).
RWBY's Theme is about Relationships in the most general sense. Not favoring one strict topic over the other.
Wow you just talked about rwby as a masterpiece and a show Who tell us something i needed to hear you're amazing man❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
