First Hive Inspection Of The New Season
มุมมอง 2.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video Chris opens up a hive for the first time since last September. Other than for feeding this hive has been left alone during the winter and now it’s time to see how it is getting on. We deliberately chose an ok hive rather than a massive one as many new beekeepers can get disillusioned if they find their hive at anything less than full strength after the winter. Really love it
You leave two queen cells after the first queen has hatched.what happens the remaining queen cell..? Thks
Assuming the first queen out is a good one then she will kill the other one.

It’s great. Queen bee bought it for me.
Welcome back have no bees yet but spring time hopefully great channel .hope you are well

I found you and then you were gone. I’ve been subscribed waiting…and wow there you are. I am new to bee keeping. Hoping to gain a feral bee hive this spring. Thank you, love the Cotswold, I’ve hiked it twice. I live in Missouri.
Thanks for your message. I’m sorry it’s been a while but we are back now.
Fantastic 👍
We are glad to be back online.
Just watched this video with my 6 yo daughter. She loved learning about the bees. Thank you!
@@rws8163 I’m so pleased she enjoyed it.
Great video thanks. How small does the opening of the queen extruder should be?
@@ayeleraberra4338 it should be small enough to keep the queen from going through but big enough for the workers to be able to leave.. You can get the standard dimensions online.
Greetings from the picturesque valleys of Jammu & Kashmir, This is Suhail. While the political future of our region remains uncertain, I believe the India Alliance has a fair chance of forming the next government. Ultimately, what matters most is leadership that focuses on peace, stability, and the well-being of Jammu & Kashmir.
You have created such a beautiful sustainable way of life

new learner here. hadn't seen this done this way before. Learn something new everyday.
That’s the great thing about beekeeping. No matter how long you have been doing it there is always something new to learn. After 30 years I am still learning.
Bit late to this thread but where do you get the ash can and filter etc
I bought it from Amazon.

Hey thank you for the Video, Can you guys supply me with beehives I'm in Lesotho. I have some bee colonies I kept them in the old wooden trunks. I really really need some beehives, please help.
Sorry we can’t supply.
Dude you have on super thin gloves😮
For most bees if you handle the bees correctly you don’t need thick gloves. Also swarms tend to be docile.
🇦🇺 ❤ that was great information. Just wondering why it's necessary to fill the smoker when only the tiniest puff of smoke is used?🤔🐝
@@gringo6797 it’s your gets out of jail free card. All animals can have a off day and bees are no exception. If ever they are in a defensive mood you can give them a bit of smoke as you are working them. Not too much though.
Brilliant... you have just saved me lots of money and hassle. Great and simple idea.
Glad to be able to help
Which should qualify as organic, I was under the impression that all bee honey was organic. They don't eat or pollinate fake flowers. This should be said all honey bees are organic. All natural.
Whilst I would agree with you but the fact is that to be described as organic it has to be certified by one of the organic certification organisations and they say you can’t produce organic honey in the UK.
I have my basic assessment tomorrow and your videos have been excellent for increasing my knowledge - a good balance alongside my bee-keeping club and mentors (I am currently on the New-bee course!). I also have to say - I am a baker and my name is Carol!!!! I am known in the club for my honey baking, cakes and biscuits galore! Happy days!
Good luck with the Basic. I think the BBKA should have a baking Module. An essential part of beekeeping!!!!
Thank you - I have dropped off my Gloucestershire honey hobnobs for the inspector (this may help!).
Great detail much appreciated as I have a swarm right now that I need to capture in my backyard. Funny thing is it’s under a box that was decimated last fall by yellow jackets. Therefore, God is putting back what he allowed to be taken last year.
How do they go right in if you don’t know where the queen is?
@@sheilamclaughlin5001 they naturally walk uphill until they find a suitable stopping place.
very informative, thank you!
@@cece8309 I’m glad you enjoyed it.
The is the first time I have seen this technique, I have always put them in a Langstrom or a NUC for small swarms, the old guy who taught me bee keeping used to spray them with sugar syrup, but I don't like this, I give them some feed about 7 days after they have moved into the hive, unless their fist honey store is extremely small

Pozdrawiam serdecznie i życzę miłego dnia
A very good video, but can you tell me if a domestic Henry vac will do the job instead of a commercial one with only one speed?
The vac I’m using is a domestic one and has two speeds. I can’t comment on the one speed one as I’ve never used it. Sorry.
So great and good lesson I have learnt
I’m so pleased.
Full power? Really? Also pipe is ribbed. Should be smooth. Surprised you get any alive.
You would be surprised how little suction you get with the ash can in between the vacuum and the pipe. Using this method is always a last resort and only used where you can’t physically get your hands on the colony. You would be surprised how few casualties there are.
Thank you
Thank you. Brilliant, simple and above all clear.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video... As they say, one learns something new every day! I've kept bees for over 20 years now (still a beginner though 😂) and have caught swarms in the past. However, I've never thought of using the queen excluder either of the ways you've demonstrated here. I wish I'd seen this video about 6 weeks ago when one of my hives was swarming left right and centre - I managed to catch two but after I left them alone they absconded in very short order! I now know what to do to keep them in my apiary next time! Thank you!
That’s the great thing about beekeeping. We are all learning from each other all the time.
Did not see how you got the queen into the hive first. I'm assuming that was necessary in order to get the others to go into the hive.
No need to put the queen in first. Just dump all the bees onto the ramp and she will walk in with the rest.
I assume that will work with a top bar hive as well?
@@ewegot9000 I’m sure it would work with a top bar. Bees will always walk uphill given the opportunity.
Really great video!! I hope you are still checking your comments. Your video is the only one I found that described everything so clearly. Thanks
Still checking and really glad you enjoyed the video.
I'm attending TH-cam University on Bees tonight because I've just received delivery of a beehive and I didn't have any sort of plan there's a swarm in the Mesquite tree near my truck so the plan was to get the Swarm into the Beehive but I didn't have any idea how to do it and I liked your tutorial quite a bit. Appreciate it. Subscribed
Reading the voice text captions, as the bees were walking into the hive, I think I heard and read that “ your queens are marked and clipped”….does this mean that you clip the wings of your queens?
Yes, it’s a form of swarm management. For the majority of her life she is too heavy to fly and there are no nerves in the wings so it doesn’t affect her in any way. All it means is that if the beekeeper misses the signs of swarming she can’t go off with a swarm and the bees return to the hive. The beekeeper can then carry out proper swarm management thus saving the swarm from possible starvation or destruction by someone who doesn’t want them. If you want to know more please have a look at my swarm management videos.
could you make a video of actually making the bee vac, where and how you cut holes, how you control the suction, did the ash can come with that filter. Thankyou.
It is best to transfer bees at night. During the day some of the bees out of home will lose their way to your home
Agreed and I say that during the video. We moved these late evening when they had all come back so that we still had some light for filming.
I recently discovered your videos and subscribed straight away - you have a wonderful empathy with the Bees, calm, relaxed and extremely informative especially as I am a new Bee Keeper - thank you
