Problem, armor is not exclusively passive. If someone is wearing platemail for example, they can move to intentionally take a hit on the armor but in such a way that the strike is deflected without damaging the wearer. Does that count as being hit?

The star wars D6 game has a whole galaxy already built on Wookiepedia (get a map on google. You can just twweak some names and creatures and you're off. I suggest each planet have a few locations (or 1 if it is a hostile biom) and detail their resources, military and crime rates. Then write up a few key figures to have npcs work for someone. easy.

I think almost all games need tweaking by the GM that runs them. So in my opinion (only listing a handful of the games you have mentioned) I would also put Cthulhu as S tier, a heavily tweaked 5e I would also put as S tier (I made a 206 page conversion of it to make it grittier that my table uses exclusively when we play 5e and it’s a great system once you take the Marvel superhero feel away from it). Instead of Chronicles I would have put 1E Hunter the Reckoning up there… again with tweaking it’s a great system, I would probably put as A tier. Instead of Pathfinder or Starfinder I would have put Star Wars revised edition up there, with a little bit of tweaking (again I know) it’s the best version of 3.5 / 3.75 there is, I would rate it S tier. For lore I would rate Forbidden Lands S tier, but for combat mechanics I would rate maybe B, but with tweaking probably an A… it works fantastic when combining with Green Ronans ‘A song of Ice and Fire’ games. One Ring 2E would be my preferred instead of 1E, I would put that as B tier… Merp would be above that though, probably A tier but requires a lot of work from the GM to run a smooth game. Instead of Coriolis I would pick Alien. But would run a more colonial setting game and run it as a campaign. The combat system is almost the same as Forbidden Lands, which is perfect for that gritty realistic, Grimdark setting. Pathfinder I would put in D, Starfinder D both are too crunchy for me. Warhammer is a great book to read through but I pain to run, D tier for me. I would pick Rifts instead of Gurps and would place it in A tier. Traveller I’ve never played and would love to… so I’m glad you put it in S tier. Cyberpunk, I’ve tried really hard to like because I grew up with 2013 and 2020 as a young teen, but I just can’t get away with it… i think a tweaked Star Wars revised edition game for longevity or a Tweaked Alien (free league) game are much better mechanics to use for a Dystopian futuristic setting. Thats all just my personal opinion though, sorry for mentioning all the tweaking / homebrewing etc… that’s just how I’ve ran my games for the last 5 years or so. Also I realise some of the games I mentioned were not released when you did this video.

I think a mix is fine, provided it's the right tyoe of file. I have plenty of pdf files, but i can back those up multiple times. I don't buy stuff you can't download and use without proprietary readers. D and d beyond is unacceptable for this reason.

I’d have to include Blackwater Creek in my list of top one-shots. Absolutely fantastic scenario. Played it 3 times and it never fails to creep out the players.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I've been wondering about this convention. Did you stay at the Biltmore hotel or another local one? I'm curious about actually playing in the games; I know you said you didn't get to do that. How many days or weeks in advance did one have to sign up for those? If I went to this convention, it would be a major letdown not to be able to play in the games.

DND design goals are not to provide a perfect simulationist-heavy system with great realism. Is about a bunch of medieval theme super heroes killing monsters, so its mecanics make a trade off between realism and gameability and favor the later one.

I like the minis

I'm a big fan of Saturnine Chalice. Some fun NPCs. Flexibility to show multiple horrifying scenes. Some creepy elements that your players will remember for some time. A mystery to solve. Supernatural elements. And even a cryptic word puzzle (if your players are into that). Certainly at the top three of my list. Deadlight and Lightless Beacon are probably my top two

Yeah session 0 really weeds out folks that can't handle body horror and sanity erosion etc. if you have issues with horror games perhaps avoid the game.

my favorite game is Final Fantasy 7 (I know not ttrpg) but I think what I like best about it mechanically is the materia system. If you don't know what that is, basically no one has any skills really. Your weapons and armor have slots you can put materia in, and those materia give you skills/magic etc. They also grow from their own form of xp and you can swap them out whenever you like. But they're not a skill tree, they're items that need to be found or bought. I've never seen a ttrpg do something like that. I'm not sure how it would be possible, but it would be cool

In the 90's I tried to make my own system based on percentages. So Skills would be on a scale of 1 to 100. Same with Attributes where an Attribute of 100 would be "Peak Human" ... so for characters that are superheroes, thir numbers would go higher than 100 ... but I never figured it all out :/

That having a better chance with a WoD dice pool than with a d% is an illusion. The moment the GM says they want five successes and the difficulty is a 10, then i you have less then five dice you automatically cannot do it and if you have exactly five dice your chances would be 1 in 10.000. Sure, that is an extrem example, but it shows that it is very easy to have probabilities that are less than 1% change in the WoD. For me the perfect dice system does not concern itself about the character capabilities... but actually concerns itself with more narrative aspects. And yes, even the supposed narrative dice from Genesys fail in that regard. That is why I design my own system to address.

I love the points you guys bring up. Oddly, I think I'm perfectly aligned with Matt's preferences. I also loved White Wolf's dice pool system. And 80s Battletech's hit location system. And I especially like a system where a character can grow over time. And I prefer "incremental point buy" ("IPBs") XP systems, as Matt called them. Yeah, being able to purchase or save as you wish is awesome. But for me, the best part is that it doesn't have a "packaged advancement system" like D&D where when you level up, you may get things you don't want that you'd prefer to have alternative options for instead. With all the IPBs I've read and/or played, they all allow you to purchase what you want, and nothing you don't want.

I still enjoy a good number of his newer AVGN videos for what they are, but I agree that they can be hit or miss. For every Beating Jekyll and Hyde video, we now seem to get something like the video where he reviewed that pet cat simulator for Wii that didn't work because it was barely a game and not even really pretending to be one whereas the best videos feature the sort of bad games that we're all still a little salty we got tricked into wasting our birthday presents on when we were kids.
