    Yeah, I knew once I found out Lin Manuel Miranda wasn’t returning for the soundtrack, it was gonna be mediocre. You have Lin Manuel Miranda: a very accomplished, professional, critically acclaimed musical theatre writer and composer. When you take someone with those kinds of accolades and replace him with two TikTokers who wrote the unofficial fanmade bridgerton musical, their work is going to pale in comparison. This is like when Disney hired a pop artist to write the music for Wish.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer หลายเดือนก่อน +159

      Julia's credentials wasn't the issue; Disney not sharing much AT ALL during production was the issue. Dhe herself said Disney gave her very little to go on. And Lin (who was working on "Hamilton" at the time) had 3 years to craft the music; B&B only had 1 year.
      Edit: Apparently B&B have been working on "Moana" as a tv series since at least 2022 according to Lin, but having to rapidly go from show to a film in less than a year is a massive middle finger when trying to work out the kinks and adapt it properly.

    • @hkd8227
      @hkd8227 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

      @OpticalSorcerer B&B’s credentials were definitely an issue. The bridgerton musical only got as big as it did because its based on bridgerton. The music from what is considered their “best work” is average at best and nowhere as good as Lin Manuel’s. Even if you gave them three years, the music would probably still be mediocre. Also, these two hacks tried to make money off an IP they don’t own and even rejected Netflix’s offer of making their musical legit because they knew they’d make more money selling concert tickets. The fact that disney hired them goes to show how absolutely sad and pathetic disney and become.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@hkd8227 I've heard here and thete, but I don't know them expertly. Disney probably just thought "they're young and on the rise"; while Lin did have a lot of experience, he hadn't created "Hamilton" when Disney approached him for "Moana" (which one may argue is his magnum opus, but IDK about that and "In the Heights," which had came out by then). Disney approachrd Lin wanting to make a pop-meets-Broadway sound, and I really hope they work with Lucy Moss and Toby Marrow in the future for that purpose (and give them space).
      There's no way any of us can say whether the quality of B&B's music would be better or worse for the film, but it would've been a better opportunity and standard procedure for a movie's production vs a tv show turned film.

      and i get it that they were trying to be quirky or whatever, but it really grinds my gears. it annoys me to no end. and not only because it feels incredibly out of place, but because it disturbs the lore: so… Maui can see the future now?? what’s going on?? i would really just rather him saying something wildly anachronistic and leaving it at that. this is much more confusing

    Look, I’ve been an LMM truther since In the Heights first hit the scene in 2005, and I’m just gonna say it: the hate this man gets from certain corners of the internet is wild to me.
    Lin gets flack from Disney adults and the “Broadway purist” crowd because his songs don’t sound like traditional show tunes. But, like, that’s the whole point. He made Broadway relevant to a whole new audience by proving that modern, contemporary music could work on stage. I mean, just listen to his best work, and you’ll feel it. When he nails it, you understand why he’s the face of a literal musical renaissance.
    Take Hamilton. Yeah, everyone talks about Alexander Hamilton’s big moments, but for me, it’s all about Aaron Burr. He’s arguably the most well-written character in the show, and the way Lin slowly switches his persona with Hamilton’s over the course of the story? Chef’s kiss. Burr starts as careful and reserved, and by the end, he’s impulsive, reckless-he becomes Hamilton. That’s storytelling on another level.
    Honestly, Burr is what modern Disney villains should be-nuanced, complex, relatable. But instead, Disney keeps giving us these quirky, “actually, I’m not really evil” types who barely leave an impression. And yeah, I’m looking at “The Scuttlebutt.” Is it a bad song? Sure, but at least people remember it. Imagine if that song had been Scuttle’s introduction instead of a weird throwaway number at the end. It could’ve worked! And let’s be real, you’ll forget every song from Wish before you forget The Scuttlebutt.
    Lin knows how musicals work because he grew up surrounded by them. He literally went to school with Robert Lopez (yes, Frozen and Book of Mormon Robert Lopez) and was already meeting legends like Alan Menken as a kid. He gets what makes a musical stick in your head.
    And yes, I know he gets memed into oblivion. But the thing is, memes only happen because he’s everywhere. His music is everywhere. And it’s good. You don’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts with a Disney song (cough “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” cough) unless you’re doing something right.
    Also, if you’re here and you haven’t listened to his new concept album, The Warriors, stop reading this comment and go stream it. It's not only incredibly innovative but a fantastic musical soundtrack that blends multiple genres together to tell one cohesive story.
    TL;DR: I have my front row tickets to the LMM Renaissance tour and I'm happy that wish and Moana exist to remind people of why the man's skill with a quill is on matched when he's on game time.

    • @ayyyylmaoooo3580
      @ayyyylmaoooo3580 หลายเดือนก่อน +98

      I mean the man's work speaks for itself so I never understood where the hate for LMM was coming from in the first place. Especially because the criticism was just "he's annoying" "everything he writes sounds the same". I think he is just an unfortunate victim of overexposure and that strange phenomenon where people are okay with you until you hit a certain level of popular and then suddenly, everyone has turned on you at the drop of a hat.

    • @CoolScratcher
      @CoolScratcher หลายเดือนก่อน +60

      On what you've said about him making Broadway relevant to a new crowd, I can relate. You've been a LMM truther, conversely, I've been a hip hop truther. Honestly I wonder why they didn’t just repurpose the scrapped song “Warrior Face”…? It functions relatively the same way this song was attempting to, except far more concise and actually has a catchy hook. Both songs designed for Maui giving Moana some motivational words/encouraging pep talk. Only main distinction being Warrior Face was him teaching Moana how to scare the monsters and here it’s more like a vague “you can do it because you’re capable and I believe in you cheehoo”. I know it’s not typical for studios to revive scrapped songs (especially when it’s already in public perception) but I think I’d genuinely prefer being able to see that song given a second chance on the big screen then uh…well whatever cheehoo was trying to go for

    With the way they cobbled this movie together out of 3 preanimated episodes, I bet there were scheduling conflicts that prevented him from doing it or maybe he outright just said no. Like, Lin Manuel being able to change a major character's name in Encanto just to make it fit a song better goes to show just how early & close he was working with the production in that film, and it was probably a similar situation for the original Moana. Maybe he knew he didn't want to deal with this rushed disaster. just my baseless speculation lol. I really enjoyed the breakdown on the lyrics!

    Love all your observations, but I will add one thing. The CHEEEE HOOOO is not just a phrase of words, the way it's said is very important. The only way to say CHEEEE HOOOO is with that very specific inflection. The way the Rock does it in the song. To sing it properly would be frankly ridiculous and it would lose it's meaning without that accompanying inflection. So, that would be my argument to your point of it sounding unpleasant to the ear. There was really no other way the Rock could've delivered that line.

      It's an interesting detail. There's a bit of a weird line it's walking where delivering the right sound and inflection for authenticity makes it tricky/impossible to work into a song like this one as the refrain or to close the Chorus. Not to say there aren't ways to integrate it but I don't think the Production staff on the musical element had the time to workshop a harmonious use.

    I am fascinated with Disney's music choices lately - yes, they had LMM for The Little Mermaid, but Wish and now Moana 2 have not been the hits they should have been. I'm not saying they're not going to be popular, but they're not going to be You're Welcome or We Don't Talk About Bruno either.
    I am so curious as to what they plan for Mufasa, Snow White, and Lilo & Stitch - especially because I think Snow White in the trailer is singing a new song, I believe. They're clearly trying to find their new sound and songwriters, but they're not giving any of them the time they deserve to create iconic songs again - lord knows how long Barlow and Bear had to create these songs, especially knowing the timeline of this movie's announcement to final product was ridiculously short.

    I will say however that I do not blame the songwriter at all. They’re clearly still learning, and have some skill here. Yes I know it has worse lyrics but atleast it felt important to the story and tells us that were all made of star dusts and thats why we wish upon stars. This song though... Especially in german, this song sounded like a pop song, and the Sanger didn't gave me musical vibes at all.
    The only songs I like from Moana 2 are Were back and Beyond. Thats it. But the rest of the movie was good in my opinion. I definitely had a fun time at the theatres.

    Those songs are the reason I'm glad I'm not English, the French song sounds much better which was also the case with wish (as far as you can save it). Its nice the translation team actually tries to give us good songs

    Can’t help but think of Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” while watching/listening to this 😅

    Yet another case of "I wished I didnt had to judge a TV show's soundtrack the way I have to hold the soundtrack of an official Disney theatrical feature film soundtrack to a warranted high standard" but here we are 🤷‍♀️

    I’m just hearing this song for the first time. Wow this is just a bland nothing song compared to You’re Welcome”. I’m not a hufe fan of slanting rhimes that are used too often but at least Lin did it fairly well. But more importantly if you just hum the song it’s not very good. You’re Welcome is catchy and you can hum it all day.

    I swear these new Disney songs were written 30 minutes before recording

    I will say about "level up" Maui in both Moana and Moana 2 has some level of precognition about future tech things. He says "when you write with a bird, it's called a tweet" in the first one and "are you sure it wasn't a butt dial... That'll make sense in like 2000 years" in the second one.
    So that one nitpick is without merit as the character probably knows what level up means if he knows what a butt dial is.

      Also I do like the idea of "can I get a chee hoo" even if the sounds are a bit unnatural in a song because it's basically a battle cry and he's trying to inspire Moana to use it. The phrase is used several times through the movie by several characters in moments of celebration or when they're about to fight. It sounds the same in and out of the song, so I don't mind a bit of dissonance.
      But the execution is where it falls apart. "Come on a, Moana" is a ridiculous thing to say and I do not support it.

    7:54 they made this to copy you’re welcome. Hell they made the whole song to copy you’re welcome.

    They really could have used the song "Warrior Face" from the Moana Jr stage show and it would have still worked as a motivational song
