My 120 Film Journey Has Begun
Learning how to shoot 120 film with a 2 1/4 camera like the Hasselblad can be very rewarding, and enthusiasm for the new film format is a big part of the success. Getting started with black and white film like Ilford Delta 100 and processing it in your home darkroom is a lot of the fun.

    It's great to see so many people getting into film. I get criticized for shooting film by the digital gearheads who really are in it just for the gear rather than actual photography. Film forces you to focus on the image as well as the equipment, maybe more so. I love the Hasselblad but I think I like my Leica just a little more :}

    I liked the Hassie kit but ultimately sold it. The reason was the minimum focus distance - I was always reaching for extension tubes. I couldn't see any difference vs. the Bronica ETR, even with big enlargements, and with the Bronica I have better options for closer focus. Still a sweat bit of kit though.

    Good job, I'm a very old pro and usually shoot medium format . I find it to be the best compromise, most of time. Lot easier to deal with than, my 8x10 or 4x5 and it's still much better than 35 in the darkroom. As for gear, I'm partial to my Rollie's (TLR) and my Hassablad stuff, but their is a lot of good gear out there. Enjoyed your channel.

    Interesting choice of 555ELD instead of 503CW or 501CM. Any particular reason you choose that model? When I was younger I did have a 500 ELM model but I loved the lightweight 500CM more so I ended up trading the ELM off. I might pick a 503CW or 501CM next year as a second camera also. A couple dream Hasselblad cameras for me are the 903SWC and a 2000/200 model. I did have a Hasselblad H1 camera at one point and it was a great camera, I just didn't like the 645 format of it. Great choices of lenses! I want to add the 250MM CFi lens to my collection also or perhaps the 350MM SA if I hit the lottery 🤣

    I started my photographic journey with medium format and have used it consistently for decades. When I started shooting professionaly, I used Yashica 6x6 TLR, Mamiya 6x6 TLR, Fuji 6x7 and 6x9 rangefinders, and Mamiya 6x7 SLRs. I used 55/80/180mm lenses on the Mamiya TLR. I routinely used 50/90/180/250mm lenses on the Mamiya RB67. I also used a 140mm macro lens and extension tubes for medical and scientific work. I will follow your medium format usage with great interest.

    I've used D76 for most of my photos but last year I tried Xtol, and I felt it was less contrasty than the D76. I preferred the D76 because of that. Recently I have been shooting with Ilford XP2 and of course you need to develop it using C-41, although the Digital Truth tables show that you can use a regular black and white developer as well, which I haven't tried. C-41 is a bit nastier chemical and you need to be careful handling it as well as disposal. But the XP2 negatives are beautiful. I may try a roll and develop it with either D76 or ID-11 sometime.

    As far as I know, the resolution regarding the lines is better at the medium format lenses, than at the large format lenses, but the negatives are bigger at 4x5. What would you say, about the enlarging limits between the two size? Can I make larger enlargement of a negative taken with an average 4x5 lens than a negative taken with an average medium format lens? When I say larger, I mean without the image “falling apart” or “seeing the grain”. Approximately what is the maximum (print size) in medium format and In 4x5?

    • @stillshootinginblackandwhite
      @stillshootinginblackandwhite 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There's not really a maximum as everyone draws there own line in the sand. I think medium format lenses might be sharper than LF but with the additional enlargement the grain might become an issue. If I was hanging a print in my house, in black and white, I would expect to make a 4x6' print from either without issues. I went to Salgado's show in Toronto and the prints were about 8'. They had grain, but still looked amazing. I would have bought one too, if they weren't US$200K.

    I use two cameras, a small digital and a 6x7 rangefinder. Use the digital to preview the scene, much like a Polaroid, the if the shot looks good I take the same shot with the 6x7. Saves money. A frame of 6x7 in infrared costs about $2.50 if you have the lab develop.

    Another benefit of the Rollei IR film is without the IR filter, it is a great b&w film especially with a yellow filter, so you don't have to shoot the entire roll in IR. I tend to shoot it in 645 or 67 and that narrows down the number of shots. With the old Kodak IR gone that didn't have an anti halation layer, I plan on screwing on a Softar filter to see if it will add a touch of halation. I also have a Mamiya rb67 150 mm soft focus lens and will try that with the strongest disk inserted. With 18" of rain last month here in Florida, plenty of chlorophyll in plants now. I like the sun somewhat behind me to reflect off all that greenery and try to include water because it turns black and clouds to fill in the black sky. With the R72 filter I meter at ISO 6, it cuts about 6 stops of light, at f/16 and usually end up bracketing at around 1 second one stop either way. Thanks for inspiring me to pull out that ir film.

So, even in that event, one could still continue to shoot something. Also, I have the DW3 look-down viewfinder, which I found useful for some kinds of portraits and architectural photography. It's worth mentioning that before you develop the infra red film Rollei recommend that you prewash the film first. I did and a red coloured liquid came off. It's probably to get rid of the antihalation backing layer?. Anyway the processing was fine. I developed it in Rodinal and got some great negs - best were in a local overgrown graveyard. The infra red effect made it super spooky even though they were taken in full bright light.

    A camera store I go to had a mint F3 with the 55mm macro lens for $650. I was thinking about the F2 until I saw the F3. He said that a lot of doctors, lawyers and other wealthy people would buy these high end film cameras back in the day and barely use them. Usually a family member would take them in to the camera store to sell one the owner died. I'm looking for one that's slightly used with little to no scratches on it. Right now I have a chance to buy an F4 and an FM2. I can get both of them for $400. They say the F4 is heavy. I mainly want one for street photography. I bought a Canon AE-1 back in April this year and just the other day I bought a Minolta srt 202 for $40.

      You can't go wrong with any of those but the F4 is heavy. You'll get great photos on the street for sure. I would likely chose something lighter, without a motor drive since I enjoy the process of firing the shutter and winding the film. Plus I don't need the framerate any longer.

      @stillshootinginblackandwhite I agree with that. That's why I'd like an F3 or even an F2. Some people think the F2 was their best film camera. I don't need the auto advance or the frame rate. The auto focus might come in handy with my eyes but normally I use a zone focus for street photography.

      Do you find the screen in the F2 is bright enough. I thought an up-dated/brighter screen was one of the up-grades on the F3.

    I'm sorry for the losses. In any case, it's good to have a channel with someone talking about photography beyond to equipment. Your videos help me take better photos. Thanks.

    Great review of the M6. Some points to clarify the numbers relating to the view finders. The numbers relate to the magnification of the viewfinder. The original M3 had a magnification of .92 which is the greatest magnification of any of the M cameras. It was well suited for the 50mm lens which at the time most photographers used. It was also the most accurate focusing. Because most press photographers preferred to use the 35 mm lens Leica came out with the M2 which had a magnification of .72 which is the base for most subsequent M cameras. When the M6 came out the viewfinder was .72. Some photographers preferred using 50mm lens and longer (the old M3 had only 3 frame lines 50, 90 and 135). Leica then came out with the .85 for 50mm and telephoto users and the .58 for wide angle users 24mm, 28 etc. Because the base line of the wide angle is less than the .85 or .92, it is less accurate on focusing. Hazing can be caused either by fungus and/or from the lubricant condensation on the glass. A problem on some of the M6’s is glaring when viewing near strong light. Leica fixed this in later models. You should also discuss the differences between the “Classic” M6 and the TTL. The TTL is slightly higher and was designed for electronic flash. If anyone is thinking of buying the older M6’s be aware that Leica no longer repairs the light meter and I am not sure if there are any third party repair service people who do. If I were to buy an M6 I would pay extra and buy the 2022 model which took care of many of the issues with the older M6’s and if your light meter goes bonkers they will have parts for years to make repairs. Not sure why they can’t make parts for the older light meters or make them compatible with the older models. I still prefer my Leica M3 and M2’s still work fine and no electronics to go bad. One problem I heard about the older M6’s is light leaks caused by worn the rubber bumpers….never really liked them…..preferred just the wear from the rubbing from straps. Again great review, thank you.

      Depends on a couple things.... first the water in a waterfall is really white, so can easily block up. Maybe develop for a shorter time but then you might need a touch more exposure. What film are you using, what developer and for how long?

    I put most of my cameras in a box. I pulled out my 1947 Speed Graphic 4x5 I completely rebuilt, and set up my Beseler 45m enlarger. I going to do what my passion is. Zone work with 4x5. I’ll buy another 4x5 with more movements but it has to be something compact that I can collapse with the lens already attached (?) ideas ? Now that the kids are grown the house is STILL. I have 20 years of negatives to make into prints and then publish for my children to have images of themselves to share with their children. I’ll never be famous but I can give them back their youth and give their children’s children a glimpse of a forgotten time 🫶 Yeah, I crave the quality but 4x5 and my enlarger is do-able ….for now 😅

      If I was buying a new 4x5 I would likely get the Horseman. Maybe it's called the FA. Either that or the Toyo. I doubt you can close either with the lens on. Have fun, that's the key.

    Great review, Rob. I have 2 Leica cameras: the M2 and the M10 monochrome. Love both cameras. With regard to the "zinc rot" issue, can that be caused by the "1/2 case" that is available for the Leica M cameras? I have the 1/2 case for the M10. The case is leather but I had never heard of this issue.

      I'm not sure with the Zinc rot. I think you need air around the camera so maybe the half case is better. Did you look up a couple examples as it's fairly common, but few know the solution. Now I keep my cameras out of the basement and through a moisture packet in the case.
