Hitting a Song 3 Ways with a Vermona Spring Reverb on a Tascam 38 [All Analog!]
Advice. I think this sounds the best. Played live and the room sound is important. 1 vocal close 1 guitar close microphone and a room microphone. And play it with no click. Live and then add strings with close and room microphones.
You should get better desks for the studio. Setup a stationary pc with a mouse. Looks kluttered.
I like the song, very foot tapping and vibey :) Andy, its never the machine, if the person is skilled they can spin gold out of cotton :)
@@paradoxstate5018 thanks! Great compliment:)
How do u put reverb on the tape recorder?
Reverb source can either be used in the effects loop or recorded straight to the tape
@ would using a reverb guitar pedal be the general way to source the reverb? Or is there another more typical way?
@@theguylikesmovies whatever reverb you want to use. A pedal is good or a unit or even like in this video a plugin from a laptop
This is a very good video, and gave me some idea's on what to do with my cover of 'All Along The Watchtower' but I'll be using either a DMT-8vl or VF160, both need a little tlc, but I think I'll be going with the 8 track, to make me think more. your amazingly good. :) (yes I'm going to finish my cover) Just clicked on your bandcamp link, your a Sheffielder like me too :)
This is the second video of yours I've watched, and your enthusiasm has made me seriously think about finishing a cover of 'All Along The Watchtower' the thing is I made an all synthesizer cover, because I wanted to make it different from everything that's come before, but I never finished it because a few people have said there's a special place in hell for turning a song like that into an all synthesizer cover 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@paradoxstate5018 get it finished!
@@andypickeringmusic Thanks for the encouragement :) I think I will now.
@@andypickeringmusic sent you a old mp3 of my original instrumental test of the song on your Facebook messenger!!
Great and sooo inspiring. I really miss my portastudio, and I realize I need to get one again, because the limitations keeps you focused on songwriting, arrangements and music in general. I just became a subscriber! 👌👍👍👍🍻
@@vegardyrnes1793 thanks so much! Actually this was my first video and have 30 or so after this one including reel to reel recording!
sound brilient
Thanks!
I started laughing when you played demo from boombox from cassette.. That's so cool.. I imagine a guy on Sony music or any other "BIG label"with a withe shirt and tie.. looking at you😂 and you say hey big boss here is my demo.. (and hit Play) 😅so crazy things you doing... 😂
I wish there was that type of integrity in the world to be honest. Instead people at Sony hear a stream of a file that was made in a computer by a computer
Beautiful song and sound! Something I never understood is how mono music has a sense of depth and space. Something special about it compared to stereo
Many thanks! Yes there's many benefits to Mono! Even more these days with people listening on Bluetooth speakers actually
Why is it all panned left?
True mono , obviously it's still coming out of 2 speakers at the digital end
Sounds great! ❤
Glad you like it! 😁
I sent individual tracks that I had recorded with an old Tascam interface into a JVC Super VHS that I had around 20 years ago. I then recorded all of the individual tracks back into my daw. I used this tube channel I had at the time as well for all of the tracks. To this day its one of my favorite mixes I've ever done. It really sounds pretty good.
Sounds like a great technique, unique setups like that are so much more interesting
Well done. You're getting good sounds :)
Thanks!
Sounds fantastic!
Thanks man much appreciated
Sounds great!
Thanks!
Nice one Andy! I've never thought about doing a mono project, but I can see it has some advantages in helping manage the constraints of 4 track. As it so happens, I'm revisiting a 1986 4-track recording that I want to post on my soundcloud, so I will try it in mono! Thanks as always for the inspiration and good luck with the vinyl!
yes you are right there i find it's better to use betacam sp like on the sony betacam sp 75p i have tryed them all over the years
Everything sounds incredible! I love analogue, just one question... How do you convert it to digital? Why did you have to convert the analog master to MP3 to be on TH-cam, do you use any DAW and interface in the chain?
Hey mate thanks for the compliment 😁 Not sure what you mean "why" I had to convert the analogue master to MP3 to be on TH-cam? I said MP3 in the video but meant WAV file 😂 Yes I just record out of the tape machine through an interface into DAW..If you liked this video you should watch the finished version of this song th-cam.com/video/cGz2vieLKpM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HmWFxjOt5p44FDeK
@@andypickeringmusic Thanks for your response friend, I will watch and listen to the video, it is surely something worth it! And yes that's what I meant, you record everything on tape but then you have to convert it to digital WAV to upload it to TH-cam.😊 But then you go from tape to DAW through the track-by-track interface and mix digitally? Or 1.analog mixes 2. Do you make a Stereo analog master and then send that master to the DAW to convert it into Digital? If so, I suppose I can then individually transfer each track from the tape (in this case 8 channels) to the DAW and mix there also in digital, right? Do you have an email to ask a question? Thank you, greetings from Germany
Cool!! 👍
Hello Andy, It sounds very nice, greetings from Germany. I work with Universal Audio interfaces and some external preamps. But I love the sound of the Tape. Here I have the possibility of buying a 16-channel Tascam MSR 16. I know it may be subjective but I read some bad comments there about the sound, but do you think it sounds overnight between the Tascam 38 and the MSR 16? They sell me a msr 16 for 800Eur with recent service or a Tascam 38 for 1000Eur. Any recommendation? One might think, 16 channels and cheaper! but I don't know, I prefer less canale and better sound. :)
Hey, I mean it'll sound cool I'm sure but that'll be double the tracks of the 8 track on the same width tape, so probably won't be as full as the 38. Having said that, I don't have experience with that machine!
Sounds great, is that you playing the guitar solo? 👍
No it was a friend! Such a simple tone no effects at all. The full video is here if you're interested :) th-cam.com/video/BC3KfgkEwQc/w-d-xo.html

Some good points Andy! I’ve released three albums on Spotify and only 2 songs have tickled the algorithm. Maybe the occasional single and everything else on Bandcamp (or a physical release) is the way forward 🤔
Release music as you see fit I Love home recording
@@MrPaultheguitar yeah I mean that's what I've done!
I would argue that tracks without a big budget can still have big production values. But I’m all about the texture of recording, and have always preferred recording with a bit of humanity. Doesn’t matter if it’s computerised or portastudio as long as it has an interesting sound, and let’s not forget, a great song!
@@andrewjacobs3731 A Great song to tape will win over any big budget production to me, it just has more soul aha
What song is it?
@@PhouFoo "Hangxiety's Home" from my latest EP
Actually it's "Tell Me What I said" 😊 great tune, just bought it off bandcamp!
@@PhouFoo AHH sorry I put out a few of these shorts recently and got them mixed up! Thanks so much for your purchase 😁
Definitely do your own thing. It’s more relaxed and yeah, there is super high-quality. There is mid quality and low quality so the question is if you’ve got a great book great story which one is better the paperback or the hardbound it’s both the same great story and in today’s Society, we’ve had music quality to the extreme and it’s more acceptable Recording music say on a four track Cassette Porter Studio then it would’ve been years ago. John Mellencamp had a number one song in Americana on the album he cut on a mono Apex recorder no mixer just one mic straight in.He bought it from eBay. I remember buying that album at Walmart when I saw the CD wrapped in a Ziploc bag with staples on it. I said I gotta get that.
