Loving those strings and great work around bouncing the tracks out to your Revox. I like your philosophy that you shouldn’t let a bit of gear get in the way of your creative flow, and ultimately the most important element which is a great recording.
Great to see a new Andy vid. Love the strings! So freaking cool. Sorry about your 8 track. Hope ya can get it going without sinking a fortune into it. But love your “never let a piece of equipment hold you back” attitude. Love the song and sound. Cheers
This is the second video of yours I've watched, and your enthusiasm has made me seriously think about finishing a cover of 'All Along The Watchtower' the thing is I made an all synthesizer cover, because I wanted to make it different from everything that's come before, but I never finished it because a few people have said there's a special place in hell for turning a song like that into an all synthesizer cover 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow! Such a warm sound! When you put on that master tape. I can hear like overdubs of Day In The Life type drum fills there with reverb if you wanna explore this tune even further in the future but this would be really cool 45 rpm to put on!
This that you have many different versions of the song brings John Lennon to my mind saying "I like them all" "you can fix it George" haha! that you could now do the Strawberry Fields thing of editing these versions together for a developing piece
Hiya, bit of a mistake in the edit I cut out me giving the context as to why I did it lol Firstly I just love varispeed on tape , I use it a lot. Secondly I fancied to sing it lower as an afterthought really, I could have reached the original pitch like the original version though. Thirdly I thought it'd work better a tad slower and also make the strings drawn out and even more sad !
Why the ;itch down? Couldn't you have transposed the string arrangement before sending it off for tracking? Usually an analogue purist? Good video...convoluted but good.
Hi Ray, @raycochrane3971 a few reasons for the pitch down . Firstly I just love varispeed on tape , I use it a lot. Secondly I fancied to sing it lower as an afterthought really, I could have reached the original pitch like the original version though. Thirdly I thought it'd work better a tad slower. Sorry you found the video convoluted, I edit a lot of context out sometimes. I shoot hours of footage and takes weeks to put together. At the end of the day it's about the song and a brief overview of my Analog techniques. It's not nuts and bolts level. When I say I'm usually an analogue purest it's cause I don't use a daw during tracking normally but my 8 track is down.
I love it, you have this special British "sound" in both melody and lyrics .. beautiful song, definately 🙂
I'm very happy you like the song ! At the end of the day that is what matters 🙏
@@andypickeringmusic It is 🙂
Love that you show us your process dude, it's very similar to mine.
Salutes from Argentina.
Keep on rocking king!
Hola ! THANK YOU 😊
Love it.👏👏👏👏👏

Spot on mate! I had this sitting around for months and I couldn't wait to get the 8 track fixed any more
Nicely done and what sweet melancholy!
Thanks so much! I like to thing the tape speed technique helped with that feeling even more :)
Formidable piece of music… and what an effort you put in it to sculpt it to make it sound just like this. Beautiful! ❤ Greetings from the Netherlands
Thanks Arnold! So happy you like my music 😍
Nice one. Tremendous fun. Congratulations on a wonderful song and production.
Thanks so much!
Obviously someone here has been listening to a lot of Beatles. So much so that your voice has a bit of a Macca touch - which is great.
Haha never heard of them are they good? 😛
Andy this is beautiful!
So glad you liked it! Im very grateful for getting the strings recorded like this
Wow! Strings sound fantastic and great use of hybrid rig to achieve your usual analog warmth! A lovely revisit of a great song!
Cheers Peter as always! My most loyal viewer at this point aha
Thanks Andy! I'm a fan, because I enjoy the music and i always learn something from your vids!
Excellent video Andy. What a thrill to get that string arrangement nailed, beautiful.
Thanks Neil!
Lovely song, lovely arrangement, lovely result!
I'm really gald I stumbled upon your video, Andy! The whole journey of this song had me hooked and I'm certainly a fan of the end result.
Thanks Timothy, if you like videos like this one I have done tons of them in the last few years so there will be plenty to binge 😉

Hopefully I'll get this cut to vinyl but the last EP will be done first so keep tuned as they will be for sale soon
Remarkable!
Thanks so much!

Interesting idea! I'd love to splice some tapes together haha
Have you ever tried taking the front panel off the piano and miking it from the front?
Yeah that's what I did with this with a room mic in front . Nothing cuts through like the EV re10 at the back though for some reason
Why'd you pitch down the strings? Compositional reasons, or an effect, or just more comfortable singing range?

Absolutely have 😂

Normally this is a texture trick, play it fast and varispeed it to get it to the vocal key. I'm guessing though😊 great song and great arrangement!
