I find recording onto tape so cool and I find it sounds better and is more fun to record onto than a computer. I have a Tascam 464 4 track cassette and I just wish I had more than 4 tracks. Your gear is extremely cool. Great video!
@@andypickeringmusic your welcome my friend. Your music is s very refreshing change from scything that I have heard even on the mainstream music scene. Keep it up.
Love the videos! Just got a Tascam m30! I was wondering if you could go further in depth with how you patch your effects and also a bit more about the submix section and how you’re kinda going about using it! Cheers!
Great stuff Andy! I just recently picked up a 4 track and having loads of fun! Loved the song and watching your process. P.S. The nerd in me wants to point out you might need to do some slight adjustments on your 2 track, the right tension arm seems a little loose, I think it should raise to the same level as the left one more or less when playing, but i't traveling almost all the way up it seems. I might be wrong but in any case is just minor adjustments and it sure sounds great!
@@andypickeringmusic Not sure what you mean by "it doesn't stop" what doesn't stop? In any case I'm not an expert but I suspect it's just gonna be down to calibrating the various things back to spec, putting new belts if needed and lubricating the necessary bits. Online you should be able to find a service manual with detailed instructions if you feel adventuorus, otherwise I'm sure an honest and capable tech shouldn't ask you a fortune.
@@edsavage6214 as in the stop button doesn't stop the reels in rw and ff. The brakes apply then just spins opposite way... All other works been done before buying it's got new belts and recap and whatnot.. I can stop it with bringing down the guide, however not ideal!
@@andypickeringmusic ah ok, so the tension arm doesn't return? Yeah that could be the issue since that tension arm is connected to the transport. Should be a easy fix, might be just a "gummed up" part that need some lubricating or just the tension amount that needs to be adjusted.
Thanks Peter! It'll be hard to choose the best of cassette but yes I think so! Did I say I was going to do a best of cassette? Haha That's a great idea, I was going to do a double EP collection but that's a great way to go
@@andypickeringmusic I think you sent a questionnaire on cassette v cd for a best of... or maybe I dreamt that? Anyway one question I have on the 2 track R2R; Could you get a faux ADT for things like doubling hand claps live as you track? I also love the way you re-amped the bass, I'm gonna try that!
@@peterkiefel4324 ahh yes I did! I remember the post but not necessarily the "best of" part haha Hopefully soon enough I'll have some phisical copies of my music 👌 Yeah that bass technique is cool, I think it would have been better to roll off the bass on the reamped sound before bouncing as mixing the bass at the end to get a good tone where you can hear the bass line clearly was tough! Nowhere near as punchy as "Hangxiety's Home" that was just DI... So I'm still learning!
Thanks for the great content! 👊 I have a VCR and just a normal sony hifi set that also can record on tape. Until now I worked in a DAW digitally. Do you think you could achieve a kind of same result by first recording in a DAW and record all tracks on the tape or VHS, and then play that into the DAW again so you have the effect? OR record individual tracks directly on the tape and get all the individual tracks in the DAW? OR should I just buy the tascam to go short? What would you buy asuming you would start all over? Thank you !
Hey mate, thanks! I would say that there's no benefit for using Daw then to vhs. Maybe using Daw into tape as you might want the tape sound... But working analogue is more about the process and the decisions you make on that journey which can lead to more creativity.
Great fun watching the video, and I really dig the song/performances as well. Thanks for sharing! A few questions: 1. Why didn't you perform the submix (external bounce) to the new 2-track reel to reel? Was there any specific reason you used the VHS for this? 2. Is Rubber Soul your favorite Beatles album, by chance? Much of your stuff reminds me of that album. :o)
Glad you like the video Chad! I used the VHS as its a really good way to record a bounce keeping the integrity of the sound with minimal noise. An internal bounce would also have been good though! Yes I absolutely am influenced by Rubber Soul aha!
Just watched a few of your videos because I just bought a Tascam 38 myself. Very informative videos and great songs man! Are you using noise reduction with your Tascam 38?
Absolutely. Just the vhs is way cleaner and at that stage I don't want the "tapey" artifacts that come from 2 track as I mix everything to 2 track at the end. However it would work well!

My dream is to have something like the Tascam 38 or a 16 track reel to reel.
Thanks! I agree with everything you say. Hopefully one day you can get a 38!
I am satisfied with my Klark Teknik´s glad to see you using them too,..great recording you got there man,..sound good. Love cheers
Thanks mate! Yeah they were really great purchases at the price point
Love that vintage vibe! Is like the nature of the music
Thanks!
Just brilliant Andy. What a cracking song and sound recording. Kind regards. Paul.
Thanks so much Paul!

Cool sounding track and the VHS bounce works well.
Another great video!!!
Thanks Mike!
Very very nice!!
Great Job and song.
Amazing video. You sure are a talent bomb!
@TarikA Thanks so much!
Awesome track Andy. Love your stuff. Listened to suitcase in the back when while I was doing dishes the other day.
Haha hope it made those dishes extra sparkly! Thanks appreciate it :)
Man, this sounds really nice & professional..Great song 👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
I love your videos! you are really generous with how you share your approach to recording, it is appreciated!
No worries thanks for watching! Above all the technical stuff I hope the music gets enjoyed
I love your work due to your creativity, willingness to share and lovely songs. Cheers and best of luck forward!
Thanks so much Neil what a compliment!
Among all the cool gear in this video I noticed the Seinfeld mug. Haha love it 👍
Haha I have a mug for most of my favourite pop culture things, seinfeld is certainly one of them!

Thanks! That's a Vox Continental on Nord Electro
maybe stupid question: could you also bounce the rhythm track to the 2-track instead of bouncing to the VHS?
