I'm just beginning to learn 8 track recording on a Tascam TSR8, its overwhelming because there's so much to learn that I never had to worry about when recording digitally. these videos are so helpful for me to visualize the whole process. Very very valuable, thank you !!
This song is so well made and so great sounding that after watching this video i ended up singing "hangxiety's home... hangxiety's home..." for the rest of the day:) It's really fun and inspiration to watch You working on music.
Another wonderful video Andy. I actually have a similar set up here in Melbourne and am about to embark upon a new project myself - hopefully employing the same recording principles and levels of commitment to analogue! Well done mate - the songs / performances are great and it’s hugely inspiring to watch
Say hi to Melbourne for me... I now live in USA but am originally from Melbourne... and so is my tascam 414mkII which came here with me. Good to see fellow Aussie inspired by Andy's work.
Now that was lovely - I will surely keep following you from now on, and please make sure you do provide us with videos like this in the future as it was a pure pleasure to see your workflow. I am a 100% sure this is not the last time I watched that :D Cheers from Poland. Daniel.
This channel is amazing! I’m going analog too.. I’m going to record my next single in 8 tracks using a lot of old techniques and my little but trusty analog gear. A big greeting from Buenos Aires, Argentina!

Another entertaining and informative post thanks Andy. The new tune is a good'un - you definitely have your style and sound! I like your approach to demoing and using simple percussion instruments in lieu of drums. I hope your Revox gets well soon!
Thanks Peter as always! Yes the Revox is a bit of a pain and soooo expensive to fix as it's got problems even a tech guy couldn't figure out. So I have paid bills on it and it still wasn't fixed. Glad you like the tune, the new EP off to a good start 👍Although... Don't you think the hifi vhs is good?
@@andypickeringmusic yes I like the sound of your vhs master and I intend to try that method myself. Sorry to hear the revox is giving you grief. I will miss it for mastering and tape echo. @@peterkiefel4324 yeah I hope the Revox gets fixed.. Maybe I'll have to replace it with a deco pedal! Brill on the Marantz, I've fancied a 3 head cassette deck for making mixdown cassettes of my Eps and for effects
@@andypickeringmusic I can personally recommend the strymon deco! Whilst digital, it has a satisfying knob twiddling user interface the beats a plug-in hands down. Gives a great range of old-school tape effects.

Everything sounds incredible! I love analogue, just one question... How do you convert it to digital? Why did you have to convert the analog master to MP3 to be on TH-cam, do you use any DAW and interface in the chain?
Hey mate thanks for the compliment 😁 Not sure what you mean "why" I had to convert the analogue master to MP3 to be on TH-cam? I said MP3 in the video but meant WAV file 😂 Yes I just record out of the tape machine through an interface into DAW..If you liked this video you should watch the finished version of this song th-cam.com/video/cGz2vieLKpM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HmWFxjOt5p44FDeK
@@andypickeringmusic Thanks for your response friend, I will watch and listen to the video, it is surely something worth it! And yes that's what I meant, you record everything on tape but then you have to convert it to digital WAV to upload it to TH-cam.😊 But then you go from tape to DAW through the track-by-track interface and mix digitally? Or 1.analog mixes 2. Do you make a Stereo analog master and then send that master to the DAW to convert it into Digital? If so, I suppose I can then individually transfer each track from the tape (in this case 8 channels) to the DAW and mix there also in digital, right? Do you have an email to ask a question? Thank you, greetings from Germany
Those eq's on your board are pretty broad right? You can't do highly surgical stuff with them, yeah? Do you do much surgical eq work once in digital or are the sounds you record pretty much as captured? Coz, I know a lot of people get their hands pretty dirty cutting out all manner of low mid frequencies etc.
Yeah there's certainly no surgical high passing available on the mixer! When going full analogue like this there's only a tad eq applied at the mastering stage when recorded digitally. I do use Eq analogue though just never need surgical stuff as there's no fix it in the mix mentality like in Daw
@@oinkooink yes I'm happy, I have a check on a different system at the end and a/b with stuff. Sure things could be better likely if you dumped tracks into Daw and got your hands dirty but then what's the point in recording this way if you seek that kind of perfection!
I'm curious: did you lay down that bongo track "playing along" with the arrangement in your head? I would've thought you'd record the original demo as a guide track (piano/vocals) and then use that as your reference.
That probably would have worked better but this is just how I decided to work on that particular day. It's just tighter. Although I shot myself in the foot a little cause its too straight!
@@andypickeringmusic Wait. So that was MIDI bass? How live do the bass and keys have to be? "You and your mate come round and play them at my home" live?
@@andypickeringmusic Ooh. Are you assembling a crack team of musicians to play gigs? Are you considering recording live to the Tascam straight from the board? Assuming you can find one with enough outputs. :D
