Hi guys,
The purpose of this channel is to explain my personal techniques for railway modelling. These will be focussed mostly around narrow gauge models in a number of different scales.
Videos will be based around 'how to' techniques, from the basics of building your first plastic kit, to soldering, painting with an airbrush, and weathering, there will be something for any modeller on here!
Cheers.

How I make ferns & scenery on my narrow gauge model railway
I've tackled the low lying scenery on ONE QUARTER of the layout..and that has been mathematically planned to the decimal place, if you watch the video, I'll explain why.

As ever a great video and a masterclass in modelling well done G
Cheers mate
Great work, enjoyed seeing it at Shrewsbury
Good to hear! Hopefully I’ll bring Nant Gwernol to the same sort of area
@ will look forward to it. I might even say "Hello" next time 😬
Your great work and inspirational videos have encouraged me to have go at building a model railway myself. Just one small question. How do you attach your models to the cotton bud and then get it off when you’re finished.
That’s great to know, best of luck! I superglue the cotton bud on, and just snap it off again after. Super glues brittle so it works well
@@GWilliamsonModels Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply
Brilliant... now off to collect moss from my garden 😊... plenty of it after this 'non-summer'. (N. Shrops/N Wales border)
Sounds like you’re not far from me then! Yes go for a look, lots of moss looks useful, not just the stuff I’ve used
Love how this is coming together, just a quick one, have you heard from westcliff works recently? I've tried to email them a couple times and not heard anything.
Great video. After your previous mention of using moss for ferns I easily located in when on holiday in Scotland and the Lake District (it is as rare as hens teeth here in East Anglia) but didn't know how you preserved yours for 10 years. I sprayed mine with glycerin solution as used for seafoam but it sounds as though you didn't do anything to preserve it. Is that right?
I actually didn’t preserve mine, they just dried out! But when I pick a fresh batch I’ll be using glycerine to speed the process up.
We really need TR No. 1 now.
Tell me about it!
Good to see how the layers build up and great looking ferns looking very.. ferny. They don't go far do they? Can I also say thank you for showing us the whole layout (apart from the extreme right) again - see, I was concentrating on what you were saying.
Well in the past, I’ve used them for the odd fern here and there, but no, when you use them (as they should be) in mass, then you run out pretty quickly! Funnily enough, someone else commented about seeing the whole thing, but didn’t understand the fiddle yard, so I may show that running next week
nice ferns, George. I make my own brown leaf scatter with dried maple leaves which I put in a blender and then sieve to several sizes. Nice and looks very realistic.🙂
Ah yes that’s a great idea, and the colours are lovely
Nice video George Tho … have you ever considered branchling out from 009 ? I mean to direct N scale models . Standard gauge but the same space as before . Soo it will be cool . I mean you already have experience with the Bachman Percy for N scale . Maybe you could get ANOTHER and to then resin print the new body of a realistic saddle tank over top for N scale usage . I mean a peket saddle tank . Or a B4 side tank . Or even a LMS pug The possibility’s are endless with Percy’s chassis . Douglas and Tom rolt for 009 and many MANY saddle tanks in N scale Or maybe the dean goods using the Bachman James chassis and 3d print bodyshell . Or maybe a proper E2 that re uses the Thomas chassis Yes I know your a 009 person and I love them models and probably won’t stop loving them … however I would be interested in N scale . Just straight up N scale . I don’t think it will happen any time soon and I am aware of this . Buuuuuuuut … it’s better to question you cuz you are the true master as these kinds of things .
The next project isn’t 009, or NG in any scale for that matter..
@@GWilliamsonModels wut … Then what will it be?
@ wait and see
@@GWilliamsonModels sounds vairy interesting and no doubt will be a knock out job👍 can`t wait
Fill it up with trees
Yes it’ll have a fair few trees by the end of the
Looking great! The ferns look so good, I’ll have to include some on my layout!
Yeah give them a go!
Another great video!
Cheers!
That looks amazing, George 👍. Using actual vegetation from outside is something not a lot of modellers do.
It’s free, so I like it!
Looking great and as always, thank you for sharing! As for how the layout will work, being an American and wanting to understand, it’s just this section that’ll be scenic’d, right? And have you shown how you’ll bring trains on and off, like a staging or fiddle area? Thanks!
The fiddle yard is to the viewers right, I’ll try and add a clip of it for next week for you
Looking very nice George love the ferns I have tried the paper ones not a patch on what you have there, I need to take a walk on the moor.
A walk out is never a bad thing!
“The Vagabond” is more than adequate for fern, and it even has rabbits, which you don’t have …
But now it’s the Willian Tell overture … is this fern like? Is there no English music? How about some Vaughan Williams and the wanderer …?
I enjoy hunting for the ferns more than the modelling, so happy with my little system 😎
George, that's genius! I was going to avoid ferns on my cutting as the shop bought stuff looks so unrealistic in my eyes, these look blooming brilliant, so might have to take a 'leaf' out your book 😂
Yes please do! They are very fine
I use moss as grass and bushes I might have a go at making them into ferns I didint think about that nice video loving how the layout is coming along
Yeah give it a go, I’m really happy with them
Mornin' George 👋. Coming along a treat. Use of hairspray reminded me I've still got an old Merionth Mercury with 'A Gricer's Guide to Flocking (They Can't Touch You For It)', which explains how to wreck a perfectly good food processor with chopped up sponges and varying shades of green (commercial scenics tended to the primitive 50 years ago). It does however make some very pertinent points about factors affecting colour. Your moss and leaf mould ground cover looks to be taking that up several notches. Looking forward to seeing the end result of the vegetation.
Cheers, yes I remember that!
Great video again George - love the use of Poly Fibre and scatter for bushes and brambles - I've used it a little bit and it's very effective - also love the ferns - the next time you get your wellies out and go hunting it, can you take a bit of video so we can see it, in its natural environment so we can go hunting it too!
Think it's pretty standard moss that it quite plentiful on a short walk in any woodland, I just have never thought to use it for this purpose... Absolutely genius 👏
I might just do that
I've used Polly fiber and leaf scatter to make trees and brambles, so I guess that two of us who used it. I'm glad you let William Tell Overture play to the end btw! 😂
Keep it up, I love poly fibre!
This is coming along so well George. I look forward to seeing this at one of the shows next year. I really like how effective that moss is as ferns. It is good to find something so effective, natural and actually stores well... nice find. Thanks for another great video to cheer me up first thing on a Friday morning. I am off to Llandudno tomorrow for their Model Railway Exhibition at the Craig y Don Community Centre.
Cheers mate, yeah it’ll be at shows next year, ones already been organised.. Sounds good, have a nice time
everybody Wake up, George Williamson posted (by the way I love your videos)
What a nice alarm for you
You have the best videos
Woah Now this is some updates On a river . I am some days late … tho I have a plan … dunk Douglas inside the river 😂 . I am sure she will like the water . Just make sure to dampen the fire before you do this task I always thought steam engines to have personality’s . I bet so did awdery 😂 . However I still see it . Especially on small engines . Standard or narrow . For example . Douglas never has seemed to be rough or grumpy . Tho more so happy cherry and a love for water honestly . Don’t know why . But I prefer her to be like this and since I’m the books she is not Duncan . She is opposite Duncan . Guess her and his own personality’s will clash if they dare to meet in person 😂 I think the same for the other talylln engines . And if you don’t mind Talylln - fun but always sleepy . Not lazy by any means . Just happens to be tired for whatever reason so often falls asleep whilst in the yard or whatever else . Dolgoch - grumpy and to the point . Fairly gruff attitude . Not angry … but stern and by the book . The railway book of Britain’s rails Sir Hayden - think sir handel but more grumpy … yeah even worse than him . Edward Thomas - seems to be happy but annoying . I mean she often wants to work yes … but can never choose a paint livery and stick to it for very long it seems . That would drive Hayden crazy 😂 Midlander - content … nothing fancy but it gets work done and he is fine with it Douglas - she likes the water . The deep blue of water always fascinated her . Explaining the blue paint . Reminds her of the waters below . A general joy to be around … unlike her twin brother who we all know as Duncan Tom rolt- not argumentative . Seems to just get on with things and be in the background of most subjects in the sheds . And as for any others … they’re just background engines I guess 😂 I mean the talylln was in the railway series were they not . Sooo it would only make sence to give them there own personality’s separate from there siblings on the skarloey railway ! . I mean Douglas is polar opposite to her own twin . Whilst Hayden and handel are prectically identical 😂 What do ya think ???
You’ve certainly put some thought into it!
@@GWilliamsonModels not really I just think of it on the spot from the engines and how they work . For example douglas is bouncy and seemingly happy puffing with the whistle … and the blue reminds me of the water of the lakes . You try !
So G that water looks that good I was ready to get the rods out for a spot of fishing although might be a tad to fast flowing but might be a slower stretch up or down stream nice one
You got that right! Cheers
This river looks a lot faster than the reference photo last episode, my experience with Welsh streams is that they aren't so boiling and have a slightly more solid surface than the rapids here. Obviously it may have just rained in your layout leading to a glut of water!
Yeah so the photo I showed you was for the shape of it, and that was taken in spring. The photos I have for autumn are completely different and show mostly white water! It’s well known for filling up quickly and making itself known!
Well done George.
Cheers mate
It looks likes if bachmann uses the Railway Series as a basis without a face
Yeah that was sort of the idea I was going with
It’s is looking really good now family shame has been abated, happiness abounds.
It’s a clear road ahead now
Would get the layout but lack of funds
@@TheGreatWesternExpress no worries mate
Always happy to come home from work on a Friday to find a, brand new "Hi Guys" waiting for me =)
Good to know, glad you enjoy them!
Fantastic George 👍. It looks much better. I'm going to give the silicone and IPA a go with my next modelling project that has a water feature on it.
Yes it’s quite a cost effective method aswell
Phenomenal result there, George. Can't beat going with your gut.👍 The best whitewater I'd previously seen was by Luke Towan (of this parish), though his dioramas tend to the somewhat larger (well, he's Strine .... they've got oodles of space Down Under and I have the distinct impression he does it for a living). Random thought ... now you've gone to all the trouble of a model makers survey of the terminus, has it driven you too crazy to consider the 'before' version, as a working foot of incline slate handling facility? I honestly dunno if there are enough photos of Nant Gwernol back in the day (I've only ever seen the same half dozen over and again, but I'm guessing several.older TRPS types wandered thataway with their cameras before the extension got going), but Tom Rolt's description of shattered waggon parts festooning trees and raging torrent alike has always held a certain appeal.
Interesting thought, but this may well be the final narrow gauge layout I do, I’m gearing up for a standard gauge one next
Much better. Worth starting all over again for that, and a whole bunch of techniques and materials that were new to me as well. Excellent!
Yes please do try them out!
The Stream of Consciousness?
Nice 😎
Making modeling from scratch it's always a challenge. Great work. Cheers from Portugal.
Absolutely, cheers
So, finally, you ended up by robbing a bank anyway ! Not a money bank but a real river bank that you put on your layout ... :P
Something like that, though my new kitten sucked any gold away from the robbery..
Looks great, given me ideas for my stream that I need to go back to at some point
Good to know, have fun!
So early in the morning, made my day
Yes it’s an early one, but it’s ready for breakfast ;)
Love the look of the new stream! Certainly going to be using similar methods for a stream on my OO9 module!
Yes try it out, it’s a fun project
Well done George. I hate undoing something I have done before so it was a brave decision. Looks great and it will be interesting to see how you do the rest if the scenics.
Thanks Carol, I would have never been happy with the first one, so it had to go!
@ ok I concede it definitely looks far superior now 🙂👍
Really well made. The river definitely looks like the one at Nant now. Out of interest- when do you reckon you will model Talyllyn (Number 1)?
I will, but depends on when Westcliff works manage to get one up and running, due to the chassis of the skarloey, it sounds like it may need a new chassis aswell
What about the Bachman Talyllyn model they are releasing in red, black and green at some point before the end of year? You could use that and repaint it into present day Talyllyn
look way better nice job
Yeah cheers mate
Looking forward to the new version. Looking at your drone video - Shock, Horror. I note that the Guard's compartment is no longer at the downhill end of the train! Such is the progress that air braking allows, and there can now be an Observation coach at the downhill end!
Yes that’s since the new coaches. Makes a big difference to the look!
I`m usually put in a corner after that one with a tea towel over my head 🙄
Sometimes that’s the safest place
Don’t think you are wasting foam, think of it as you saved the foam from the garbage.
Yes quite right! I saved it from my neighbours skip, so well done me
Lovely job!
