Long Weekend in the Kruger National Park | Ep3: Letaba Camp
Karen and I leave Satara camp in time to watch the sunrise. Its not long before we run into a Lioness sighting and spend some time watching these females get on with their morning. We slowly make our way up to Letaba, where we check in, and get on with the afternoon game drive. We're spoilt with Elephant, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Kudu, Hippo and many other great sighting in the KNP.

    Graeme, WOW! Thanks for putting this together. I watched every stage last year in the comfort of my lounge room here in Australia. I thought the Pro’s had it tough. Hope you have another crack this year.

      Hey Jeremy - grateful for the comment and the feedback - so rewarding to get these comments. Yes, its a proper race, that's for sure. I thought that a "Riders Perspective" was important for others to see - obviously we all train hard, and we're just as passionate about MTB'ing, but we're not professionals in the true sense of the word - and this little project allowed me to show others what its all about. Hopefully getting them to maybe consider entering too. I won't be riding the Epic this year unfortunately - but I will be down in the Cape around that same week with some fellow MTB'ers doing our own MTB tour - in some of the same locations that the Epic will be visiting this year. May pull out the GoPro and doing a little recording too ;-) Take care...

    • @graemecumming
      @graemecumming 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Carl - we took a few jerry cans each, but we did in fact stop and refuel between Xakanaxa and Magotho just to be safe. If you're travelling from Xakanaxa to Magotho on the transit road, about three quarters of the way there, after crossing the Khwai river, is a little trading post called Afro Ville (it'll b eon your right hand side). Its essentially a spaza shop with a beautiful bougainvillea surrounded lapa - they will sell you jerry can refills of diesel or petrol. Not always guaranteed - in fact, we placed our order there, went through to Magotho, and then back tracked 2 days later to collect. You pay a slight premium, but definitely worth it for peace of mind.

    • @graemecumming
      @graemecumming 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We booked the boat cruise at the Xakanaxa camp - as you drive in, there is a signpost on the right hand side indicating the boat launch area. If you go down to the boats and speak to the guy there, he will be able to advise on times and availability. Try and meet with him on arrival - as you may have to wait until the next morning or evening for availability - but you should easily be able to squeeze the boat trip in if you are staying for a few days at the camp. We initially wanted to do a morning cruise, but when that was fully booked, we opted for the evening cruise. Enjoy.

    Magotho was probably one of our HIGHLIGHTS of our trip. We were there exactly the same time as you, maybe differ with a day or so. And BTW you should have done that river crossing😉 we done it about 6 times during our time there, will share some footage with you

      It was a special place, I agree Rudi. Did you see the resident camp leopard at all? For me, the close proximity of elephants in the river day and night was so special. Good to know that the river was cross able - we suspected it was but none of us wanted to drown a vehicle. 🤣

    Love you video's and details. It was you inspiring videos that have made us plan a very similar road rip in September 2024. Question we want to also take 4x4 trailers on the same routes you have done in Moremi, Savuti and Chobe. Is dragging trailers in the thick sand an issue. Seemed that this was not a problem? Any advise most welcome

    • @graemecumming
      @graemecumming 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Charles - thanks for the comment. I’m so happy that the video has inspired you into an adventure. You will not regret it. With a capable vehicle (4x4) you should not have an issue with trailers at all. September is later in the season than what we experienced - and so the delta would probably have flooded and receded by that time. You may find a little more mud than we did and perhaps less soft sand. That said, if you travel with another vehicle (recommended) you will always have someone to pull you out of trouble if needed. Enjoy your adventure - please drop a comment once you have concluded your trip to let me know how it went. Take care.

      Thanks for your message MaryJane - much appreciated. Wow - it’s a long way to travel from California…but so exciting. Being mid-August, the bush will be dry and so you should see lots around the water holes. All the best for your trip - travel safe, and let us know what you end up seeing. 👍

    Hallo Graeme, stunning footage and commentary of the 2023 Epic. I ended up watching the full 44min on a big screen. Did you mount the GoPro on your bike or how did you manage to film the shots facing yourself?

    • @graemecumming
      @graemecumming 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Wouter - appreciate the comment and thanks for watching. I actually just had the GoPro in my back pocket of my cycling jersey everyday - and when I felt like I could take a hand off the handlebar, I’d pull it out and hit record. There were some sections where I had to quickly grab the handle bar and cling to the GoPro with my fingers - but most of the time it was pretty manageable and allowed me to show various angles pretty easily. I have used a mount before - but found it very limiting in terms of commentary, other riders, surroundings etc.

    any reason why you got out of the vehicle to view the elephant at the watering hole even though you not allowed to do that in kruger national park? we also dont allow that in BW.

    • @graemecumming
      @graemecumming 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question Monthusi - to be honest, we'd been driving for a good number of hours and literally just stopped to stretch our legs for a few minutes when that Elephant came past. We have seen many more people getting in and out of cars in BW - getting stuck, checking depth of water crossing etc, and so it appears that the BW parks are less rigid in their enforcement of this rule. Also, the camping in BW is very different to Kruger, in that it is unfenced in most of the places - and so I guess you are naturally having to be more aware in BW because of this. Either way - was great to experience the Elephant in the way that we did. I guess the age old principle of keeping your distance, respecting the animal and being alert was what we tried to follow on this trip.

      @@graemecumming well in an emergency (stuck vehicle) or assessing risk (wadding into water to check depth though not advisable) are indeed justified reason enuf to disembark your vehicle but let it be not a common trend least authorities catch wind of this and they start policing you every corner only for you later on report you ate being harassed by dwnp officials...its actually for your safety as well...from your video, every one had their eyes fixated on the elephant....anything could've attacked from your rear...just follow the rules and keep safe....thanks in advance
