68 GTO Tear down
มุมมอง 4889 หลายเดือนก่อน
The 68 GTO, was not salvageable. the more I started tearing down the GTO the more I realized this job was a lot more than I bargained for. The amount of work that would entail, rebuilding this car would have been longer than the original GTO. plus the space was limited because of the Chevelle that I have. I will find another project car down the road when I'm done with this GTO.

    Thanks for sharing such a great and informative video. I recently did this same install with a Unisteer unit on my 1975 Trans AM. After a few days, I started to get a lot of fluid leaking out of the driver's side boot off the rack. I followed the recommended procedure to bleed the air out of the system, so I was surprised to have this occur. I have also discovered a lot of comments online regarding leakage from these Unisteer units. I am curious if you have you had any leakage issues with your Unisteer R&P?

    • @classicrewind2715
      @classicrewind2715 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry for the late delay in responding. I am still in the building stage of the car. Have not put fluid in the system. hopefully, I will not have a situation like leakage. I've also heard a lot of bump steer with the unisteer R&P. Do you happen to have any bump steer with your unit? All The Best..

      @DaveFaddis-u1x 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No bump steer that I noticed. I only had about three miles on the car before I put it back on the lift and pulled to R&P to send it off to Unisteer for repair. BTW, they are charging $350 for the repair and I pay shipping (about $100 each way.).

    Currently under way on a 71 chevelle build. Lot of a body similarities for sure. I'm also shaving drip rails and filling out the front and rear windshield channels for factory flushmount glass. Lots of work creating the 1/8" gap around the glass entirely and raising the installed height of the glass to ditch the trim but well worth it in my opinion. Thanks for all your body work vids I'm roughly in the same place you are with your build.

    Hello Harry, my 64 Chevelle is progressing. I had asked you a while ago about your Unisteer rack in your GTO and you responded that you hadn’t driven the car yet. At this point I am about ready to yank mine out and go back to a gear box. When going down a flat/smooth road the car feels like it wants to wander, when approaching a slight turn in the road the car feels like I’m going to lose control. I called Unisteer and spoke to Tracy, useless. I tried to get them to tell me how to adjust the vertical movement of center arm where the inner tie rods are connected to, their response was, take the unit out and send it back to them. It sure seems like Unisteer is a poor system. At this point I’m looking for opinions.

    • @classicrewind2715
      @classicrewind2715 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi David. I went with unisteer, you are absolutely right. Their customer service is horrible. I had a question a while back, a couple years ago. They never got back to me. I hope I don't have that same issue that you have. I was thinking about using Flaming river. Their unit was a lot more money. At this point, I don't know what to tell you because I still am in my build stage. I am going to put a quick update video on the car. I'm going to take the summer off. I've been putting a couple car show videos up. Probably do one more and then take the summer off. Please let me know if unisteer ever gets back to you. I really hope I don't have the same problem. Thanks for getting back with me Harry. I hate to do it but your right a flaming river unit is much more expensive and about twice what it would cost to go with a CPP close ratio steering box with all the components to complete the swap. What part of the world are you in ?

      Hi Dave. I am from New Jersey. Grew up in PA. What area are you from ? I hope everything works out for you. A couple guys tried to talk me out of getting the rack and pinion system. I just wanted a nice clean look, plus when you're doing a Restomod, everyone puts in a rack and pinion.

      Funny, grew up in S. Brunswick. N.J. was then transferred to Mountaintop Pa. and now living 30mins. north of Daytona Beach, FL. I bought this 64 Malibu SS about four years ago sight unseen. Frame off restoration body is very straight, well built 327/400+hp. Tremec T56 6spd. Some things the builder went above and beyond and some things I just shake my head at. It’s a good thing I love working on this thing. If you don’t mind, when you get yours on the road let me know how you like your rack and check the vertical play of that center arm, there shouldn’t be any. Good luck with the rest of your project.

      @davidrosenthal735 I'm about 40 minutes north of South Brunswick. I don't know if you ever heard of Chester NJ. I live near there. I'm almost done with my welding. I put in my kindigit door handles. Having a problem trying to find someone to paint, I plan on doing the body work. Everyone I talk to is about 2 years out. At the rate I'm going , I probably won't be done for 3 to 4 more years. Which is depressing. Best of luck. I will keep posting videos . Keep in touch..

    Thanks, that helped. I found the side flanges didn't have the right holes drilled and had to drill my own. Luckily plastic so easy. The "forward to release hooks" was key. Not sure I'd guessed that! Oh and the plug was mounted upside down in one lights so had to turn plug 180. Not sure it likes that.

    Need help. Found a 66 chevelle super cheap problem is that someone cut out the whole driver side from the b piller to the rear quarter. Seller has a whole replacement. Since this is structural can it be repaired? I know most would say run but for me ill like to give it a try. Thanks.

      You would have to make sure you have all the parts and fit them as you go to make sure the car is straight and everything fits properly. It's a major challenge. But if you're up for that challenge. I would go for it. All the best

    Great vid, the center of the hood of my 1969 GTO sits a good 1/2 to 1 inch higher than the center of my cowl. What do you think it is, do you think my hinges are bad, or can the hood latch be adjusted?

    • @classicrewind2715
      @classicrewind2715 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, I will check and make sure that your hinges are not binding. That is a common problem. You can determine that by pushing down on the hinge area when your hood is closed If It Moves your hinges are binding. You could also lift the front of your hood with the adjusting bushings that are on the left and right side of your radiator core support. The latch could also be adjusted. That adjustment is only on the front. Thanks for watching. I hope this information helps you. All the best .

    Great work! I just got done welding in my new driver side full quarter, package tray and window filler panel on my 68 ss Chevelle. Now i have the same gap issues except my filler panel was slightly lower than my deck lid (original) was, but nothing a bottle jack couldn't handle.

    take a die grinder with a burr bit and offset your holes. you can make a nylon spacer if desired.

      They fit a certain way or else it'll bind the fender. You want to make sure it's placed where there's less stress when you bolt it together. I think they both have the same angle on them so it's just making sure it fits properly. Sorry I didn't see this message till late.

      What year GTO do you have? The only brackets. There about 2" long and bent slightly. They only go on a 68 and 69 lower radiator core to Outer fender. Are those the brackets that you're talking about?

    Been watching most of your videos and they are very helpful. I got a 70 GTO I just finished tubbing the frame and now starting on the body. Everything behind the backseat needs to be replaced, trunk, quarters, wheel wells, you get the point. I've never done this before just a hobbyist and you videos really help! Re-watching now as I get ready to start removing panels.

    Whats your technique for getting the body off the frame once all bushings and lines are disconnected?

    • @classicrewind2715
      @classicrewind2715 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I lift the front of the body with the firewall brackets. The rear, I lift from the trunk latch. Drop the frame and pull it out from underneath and then support it. Making sure the body is level so it doesn't fall. There's a video where the upper body is supported from the roof Rafters. I ran boards through the front and rear window at one point and supported it that way as well. A bunch of different ways you can do it. I also made brackets that fit underneath the rocker panel with notches and I supported the body that way as well. Thanks for commenting , I hope this helps. All the best

    I like what you’re doing on that GTO but according to the Manuel and according to AMK fasteners it’s a course threaded bolt that goes into a cage nut

    • @classicrewind2715
      @classicrewind2715 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are two types of bolts. I'm probably not explaining it correctly. There's five bolts that go to the inner Fender to the fender that screw into plastic clips. Then there are the bolts that hold the fender to the valance panel to the inner fender. Those are different. They're all coarse threads. But one is more coarse. The coarser of the two, if that's even a word. lol. Goes to the inner fender to fender with the plastic clips.
