An unfortunate reality of flying DJIs and really any drone manufactured after 2021…

We’ll see. Artificial Intelligence covers a wide array of technology. Doesn’t necessarily have to look, act, or function at the level of ChatGPT/Gemini/Alexa/whatever to be considered intelligence. I’m excited about the concept of AI assisting in framing. May be very cool.

The Phantom is undefeated IMO. I’d love it if they released an anniversary edition of the Phantom one day…they won’t, but a guy can dream of a Phantom with a Super 35 sensor onboard…*sigh*

We’ll see. I have faith the motors will play a larger factor than they probably will…blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while though.

The Neo which is tiny and only 135gm can handle winds way above the recommended DJI limit. This is almost 2x the weight and much wider when unfolded so should be a lot more resistant to being flipped by wind gusts over the Neo

The crashing isn’t the problem, it’s the g-force put on the frame while flying acro. If they limited it to Angle mode, it would work fine as a manually flown drone, but I could see problems with hinge points and being thrown through acro flight. Another commenter suggested the Flip is going to be to the Mini what the Neo is to the Avata and I actually like that framing quite a bit. I bet the Flip is basically just an OOP-compliant Mini.

I ordered the Air 3S and had it in 6 days...the issues at the ports are troubling, but DJI drones are still being let through...albeit much less effectively than in the past.

Did you order direct from DJI? My Neo came in 5 days. But I notice the Air 3s still hasn’t hit major retailers in the US.

I'm happy about it. there are way too many idiots out there flying DJI drones. it's going to be good for hobbyists to have less morons flying around.

the professional community builds their own drones. it isn't hard to build a drone that can fly over people. with dji you get what you get. with a self built drone the sky is the limit.

Or break your heart. The mini 4 pro is a great drone, odds are the flip is a repackaged neo.

In the VAST majority of generality, I'd agree with you...this is one area that I cannot. DJI is not Chinese garbage...it's actually an example of exceptional build quality and performance. I'd love to see something out of the "West" (especially if it were American-made) that can match DJI in performance, price-point, and availability. When that day comes, I'm all-in on that...until then, DJI is the standard because they do it better than anyone in the game right now.

Yes OK, Chinese garbage was perhaps a bit exaggerated, but as a competitor to DJI I think Walksnail systems are almost always better. I especially think the image quality of the Walksnail Moonligth is better than that of DJI, lol😊

they are garbage drones. you can build your own for less money and it will be way more capable. they do own the consumer drone market though. they made it easy for anyone to pick one up and fly it. their durability is shit and compared to hobby grade drones they are trash. it has nothing to do with China though because most hobby drone electronics come out of China as well. betaflight is free open source software and it flies a million times better than DJI drones. elrs is free and open source and it is much better than the DJI control link. I'll give credit to DJI for the O3 and their video transmission. they are the best at that right now. I think openipc, also free and open source, will overtake it once it matures. I crash my 5 inch into poles and walls all the time at very high speeds and it just bounces off and keeps going. sometimes I'll have to change a prop but that is it. if you do that with any DJI drone you have to send it back to them for repair or find someone that will work on one which isn't easy.

You’re talking about FPV stuff now, which is not what the Flip appears to be (at least not purely). On the topic of FPV though, I’ve flown DJI and Walksnail and while it’s much closer than people may realize, DJI is still better IMO. The Moonlight from Walksnail is rad as hell and DJI could learn a bit from that, but overall the DJI experience is a better one compared to Walksnail. Of course it’s a subjective matter, so if you like Walksnail better, by all means! They’re nothing to scoff at!

Again, the Flip is not a pure FPV drone. In fact, the more I think about it and the more I learn, the more I believe this drone will lean closer to an OOP-compliant Mini 3/4 drone than it will an FPV drone. When looking at DJI FPV drones (FPV, Avata, Neo - kinda), I couldn’t agree more about their durability and flyability compared to traditional FPVs. I have two prebuilts and 3 custom built FPVs and I’ll never look back at DJI stuff in comparison. That said, the DJI FPV product line is a great entry point for casual flyers to get more involved with “real” flying. I learned on the DJI Potato and it got me interested enough to start exploring how to build my own FPV drones. If not for the Potato, that may not have happened for me quite as easily.

Hey, thank you and great question! I don't have any hard data on the collective average flight time for ALL consumer drones. That said, based upon my use of the Autels, DJIs, Potensics, and more, I'd be confident in telling you the upper-limit is between 25 and 35 minutes while the lower limit is right around 15-20 minutes. I agree that it would be nice to see longer flight times, but you run into two problems when attempting to extend flight time: 1. Limitations on current battery technology and the balance between endurance and necessary power to sustain flight. 2. The relationship between average cost and performance. Right now the battery technology we currently have available for consumer products is at somewhat of a plateau when it comes to their efficiency. That technology will improve, but I suspect the bulk of the research in improving it is geared towards larger applications like batteries for cars, generators/psus, etc. Drone manufacturers are working around the limitations of current battery technology by making their drones more efficient in how they expend the energy provided by the battery. As you ramp this efficiency up, you also ramp up the cost of the hardware for the drone. It makes no sense to put together a drone that is 150% more expensive because of more efficient design/hardware when the market does not or cannot afford it. Especially when the drones that really attract consumers (Minis) offer the ability to purchase spare batteries for incredibly low price-points all things considered. You will see a 60-minute flight time in a consumer drone...but I won't pretend it will be anytime soon. You may see manufacturers claim their drones are capable of that kind of flight time (we're already in the 50-minute range with DJI's billed battery specs), but the practical results of the batteries are often 10-20% lower than that minimum. I'd still encourage you to purchase technology in which you are interested. Again, I don't think this changes anytime soon (as in within 2 years), but I've been wrong before and often.

just build your own. you can get 60 minutes out of a hobby drone if you pick the correct parts and batteries. these consumer drones are garbage in comparison. DJI sucks.

Bro, why are you hating on DJI so much? 🤣 They make great drones - I know that because, despite your input on how to do better, I have yet to see ANYTHING on the market that compares in quality to the Mavics, Airs, and Minis. The closest we have is Autel and even they have fallen a step behind. If you say DJI is garbage, you’re either not being honest with yourself or you have no clue what you’re talking about…based on the fact you build you’re own, I’m going to assume you’re just not being honest with yourself…

I hate on DJI because they have the resources to make high quality drones but instead they push out plastic crap that can't be repaired without the help of DJI. they could do so much better. it also doesn't help that they use slave labor. I learned on the original avata and it pushed me right into building my own because it sucked. within a week it death rolled itself into the cement and the motors didn't turn off, it just kept skipping across the concrete until the battery ejected. I agree there is no better commercial option out there for a camera drone, but that doesn't mean DJI drones are that great. it just means that with slave labor you can charge less for more advanced stuff. I think DJI could do much better than they're doing. there is no good excuse for a multi billion dollar company to have an FPV drone that flies worse in acro than a drone I can slap together for 1/4 the price running software that people work on in their spare time for free.

Those are some solid points for sure. I could definitely see it being to the Mini series what the Neo was to the Avata series. Where I could see them dropping off the Neos is in the extreme overlap between the Flip and the Neo feature-wise. This drone is more Neo than it is anything else based upon what we know -- obviously that's subject to change as we learn more. Either way, I'll be interested to see what we learn between now and release -- and I'll be especially interested in the pricepoint.

@TheDroneGeek yeah for sure... ill be interested to see where it fits and it's price. I think it's going to be more mini than neo, but with the benefits of closer proximity flying and thus better autonomous features. I do think it will be a pro vloggers drone. What I do hope... is that dji see the massive market in sub250g fpv.. and develop the neo to be slightly better focused for fpv. I still love the self flying features etc. But I think theres a massive market for dji in the sub250g fpv !

@@FPV-TV419 oh, I'm with you there. I'd actually love to see DJI go back to "right a wrong" as it relates to the DJI FPV. They could do this, in my mind, by making modular and modifiable prebuilt quads and/or providing proprietary OEM parts for custom FPV builds (motors, frames, flight controllers, etc.). I know that there is a section of the FPV community that is pretty anti-DJI overall, but I think the overwhelming majority of the community would at least be open to trying DJI parts on their builds...and I know as somebody who started flying FPV via the DJI FPV (Potato Drone), that people who come from RTF looking to learn how to build and fly their own FPV quads would feel a lot more comfortable making that transition in an ecosystem with which they are already familiar.

There is zero evidence that the Flip will not support FPV. How about waiting for it to be officially released before claiming no FPV Capability. It should have all the same hardware to support anything that the Neo supports. Even if not enabled at launch it will be in the software for possible future release.

@gregb1599 it's got folding arms... there's not a chance dji will make the flip capable of proper fpv. They will be replacing drones via care refresh on a massive scale.. as the flip won't be robust. Yes, they will likely make it compatible with goggles, but not for full manual fpv flying

A little...lol. But I am still amazed at how quiet the Mini 3 and 4 are -- so there's hope that maybe we'll get slightly more than a little! xD

Should be a lot more quiet, the mini series are much more quiet than the Air3s due to being much slower, the flip should take it to the next level in quietness with the larger props and slower spinning.

They don't need to answer to any lesser Companies.

When the drone is at 50 metres the ugliness disappears as its no longer visible. What is most important is how well it flies and how well it records video and takes photos.

It depends on how adept you are at binding receivers and transmitters. If you bought a BETAFPV that is preconfigured with ELRS, it will be a breeze. If not, it could be just as complex...
