    Just for the record, your brain cells (neurons) don’t actually get thicker as they get stronger, instead the signals get faster. And depotentiation makes the signals slower. I think a growing brain cell makes it easier to visualize plasticity, but we gotta be accurate too. Imagine if your brain cells did get girthier though? Your dome would just grow every time you learned something new. That would be wack.

    What advice would you give to someone just entering their 20s?

    • @wise_down
      @wise_down 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not super qualified to give advice here, but I will say this: When I was 21, I wrote out a list of goals for myself to accomplish at 25. My list looked a lot like the ones in these studies. I'm 24 now. Almost every single goal is different. I care about different things now, and I want to succeed in different ways. I can't really give advice to anyone, but if I were talking to my 21 year old self, I would let him know that working towards a goal is a good thing. But don't be afraid to try new things and change those goals as you learn more about yourself.

    Having to min-max life is not ok. Videos like this are definitely helpful but I think the min-maxxing or juggling different priorities leaves a person vulnerable. Only works in the relatively well-off situation inhabitants of western countries have grown to take for granted. Classics are always a great place to start when you are asking the big question. Whether that's Anne of Green Gables or Meditations, it's better than pop philosophy. Beware band-aid fixes for the symptoms of a broken society and dead culture

    • @wise_down
      @wise_down 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      All depends on what each person wants, if somebody wants to max out, then hell yeah! I don't know about this stuff only working for people who are well off (Frankl's work seems to say otherwise) and I didn't see any data about broken societies or dead cultures, but I can definitely take a look for ya.

    • @ryanthoms
      @ryanthoms 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I live in said western countries so idk if this is privilege speaking but I believe having reasonable goals can work for literally anyone. Of course you have to take your limitations into account, you shouldn’t aim to become a pop star if you have none of the resources to do so, but maybe that’s someone’s dream and their goals are simply to get ahold of the resources they need to start realizing that goal. I think risk management is safe and security can definitely lead to a more comfortable life, but realistically I think it’s the best time for people currently in their twenties to take big risks. We have so much space to fail and so many resources at our fingertips, might as well take a few stupid leaps now and learn from it.

    Would you be interested in doing a video on sleep? My impression is that sleep deprivation inhibits creativity and goal-oriented problem-solving, which means that you tend to default to your instincts - which can themselves be developed by extensive practice. Thus, when the habit has 'crystalised' sleep deprivation may not have a significant effect on performance, so long as new solutions are not required. As I see it, the problem arises when that problem-solving part of the brain is compromised by sleep deprivation but not so totally exhausted as to be superseded entirely by instinct (thereby leading to erroneous decision-making).

    • @wise_down
      @wise_down 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would LOVE to do a video on sleep. Let me make sure I understand the goal here: Let's say that sleep improves creativity, reasoning, and general problem solving. It would make sense that sleep depravation would hurt creativity, reasoning, etc. But, if a task or problem doesn't require creativity, or a lot of reasoning, you could probably do the task without sleep. If all of that is true, you're hypothesis is that when we sleep poorly, we revert to what we know. The problem becomes when we hit that middle ground, where we don't totally revert to instinct or practice, but don't have enough sleep to do a good job problem solving, so it leads to poor decisions. This is a really interesting idea, I love it. Let me know if I have that right and I'll get to work!

    what about cognitive restructuring in cognitive-behavioral therapy? a core element of CBT treatment is addressing and rejecting cognitive distortions (like your example of the overgeneralization, “i’m an idiot.”) in favor of healthier thought patterns. changing how we talk about ourselves and moving past automatic negative thoughts is absolutely worth the time for people who struggle with that.

    • @wise_down
      @wise_down 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is an awesome question, honestly I should have mentioned it in the video. Let me clarify. I see blanket claims and general advice all over social media along the lines of- 'speaking positively to yourself will benefit you, and speaking negatively will hurt you in some way.' I tried to find studies that gave participants general advice as well, so it would reflect what I’m seeing on social media. So that’s where I was drawing the connections. The studies didn’t give personalized advice to the participants. There’s pretty solid evidence that CBT helps many people with mental health issues and mental illnesses. CBT seeks to: “directly manipulate dysfunctional ways of thinking and patterns of behavior in order to reduce psychological suffering” (Hofmann, Asmundson, and Beck, 2013). So there is the “way of thinking” part, but that's only a piece. There’s also the “patterns of behavior." Now, I’m not a therapist, but I’d imagine that a 1 on 1 conversation with a trained professional about your personal ways of thinking and your personal patterns of behavior, is different than some blanket statement like: “be nice to yourself.” In short, I'm not knocking CBT. I'm just saying I didn't find strong enough data to support blanket, impersonal advice about talking to yourself. Hopefully I made sense here. Thank you so much for keeping me honest that's a great question. A few studies on the efficacy of CBT in different scenarios, just so I'm not claiming things without backing it up: 1. Carpenter J, Andrews L, Witcraft S, Powers M, Smits J, Hofmann S. Cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and related disorders: A meta‐analysis of randomized placebo‐controlled trials. From the first study: Although a total of 46 participants were scanned, data from those with the sRPM1 score of seven (two standard deviations lower than mean) or less were excluded from the analysis because exceptionally low scores of the first cognitive task suggesting poor attention might have an excessive and inappropriate impact on the analysis. That is enough to ruin the purity of the data.
