All About Kribensis: The Perfect Cichlid?
Kribensis are arguably the easiest of all the cichlids to look after, and I would vote definitely easier than their flashier cousins the apistogramma. They are small, peaceful, easy to feed, tolerant of many water parameters and easy to breed.
They are also fairly simple to get hold of as many large fish shops will stock them - though i have found it increasingly challenging to find well coloured individuals.
My favourite fishy stuff! (yes these are affiliate links :) )
Lights
Nicrew Classic LED - amzn.to/3fG3Uv6 - Traditional led light that's got a nice high output in a white/cool colour range. Makes plants look extra green.
Nicrew SKY - amzn.to/3Ktn45U - really nice light for natural looking tanks, also the one I use for filming.
Filters
Pat Mini - amzn.to/3fE1u0k - popular for a reason, just a superb little filter thats great for shrimp tanks and fish alike.
ASAP - amzn.to/3nBuytp - the old favourite and the one i return to most frequently.
Air Pump
AP-3 Kit : amzn.to/34UMA3q - Great little air pump, not a silent runner, but has been very reliable for me.
Tanks
Scaper 45 - amzn.to/3KBxG2H - a lovely high quality tank that comes with a super strong light, and a decent enough hang on back filter - perfect for newbies and scapers alike.
My filming stuff
Camera - Cannon 200D - amzn.to/354OLlc - nice camera, easy to use.
BigTripod - Manfrotto befree - amzn.to/3GLXDdj - pricey but super sturdy and can take being knocked over a lot by clumsy operators.
Lil' tripod - amzn.to/355WmQs - can't pronounce the name but it's been a good tripod for filming things on tables or when I have tanks on the floor.

Flame tetras - also known as red tetras and von rio tetras - are a not so commonly seen species of hyphessobrycon, similar to serpae and widow tetras. Micro worms are my go-to food for fry as they are just so much easier to keep than baby brine shrimp and once the culture is established it keeps going for as long as you feed it, always being available for feeding to fry. How to Get Rid of Hair Algae from an Aquarium

Hair algae is a pain in fish tanks - it grows fast, it covers everything in a carpet of green and worst of all it can trap and kill small fish if its dense enough. All About Hengeli Rasbora (Glowlight Rasbora): The Tiniest Schooling Fish?
One of my favourite species. I have a group of 6 in my largest tank (180 gallons). Very peaceful to one another and to their tankmates, all of whom are larger species, which likely helps.
I love my Kribs! I have 6 adults! They are my favorite fish besides my Oscars. So much personality. Awesome parents. Super pretty
Thank you, Lauren. Nice presentation. Your pair are very colourful compared to a lot I have seen in the shops, and they look healthy, so they must like the way you keep them.
Not my experience. My kribs were the most aggressive cichlid i ever had. And i had at least 20 different species. But you are right about the breeding. They breed like crazy and it could be very difficult to find new homes for the young ones. They are very easy to keep. But you should have a good sized tank (100L+).
I actually love the look of it if it's not too much. It's quite beautiful how it gently sways.
In my experience, they are only great if they have a tank of their own. In a community setting, not so great. If they have conditions to breed, they chase everything, if they don't, they don't color up. So, you either get the tank bully, or some bland fish. 😐 I've end up replacing them with German Blue Rams, not bullies and they do color up, and easy to keep, if your remember that they like it hot, at minimal 26 Celsius, ideal 28-29.
The title alone has me like “ Hell Yeah they are” my pair manage to get 3 fry to survive in my semi aggressive community. My Electric Blue Acara are 0-3 on protecting fry
The title states part 1, is there a part 2? Couldnt find it while looking through your videos but might have missed it
One of my favorite fish, but I've never been able to keep them alive with anything, they either beat up everything or stress out. I think they need a species only tank or heck IDK. Long to keeper of 40 years or so. I even kept them in late 80s
I have a male/female pair now. They are inseparable. Trying to breed them but havent been successful yet. I need more cave structure and vegetation coverage for them. Maybe more frequent water changes than usual. Very hardy fish. I kept them with normans lampeye killifish. Both fish are native to cameroon west africa region.
I just saw one of my Kribs massacre a family of 5 neo caradina shrimps just for fun not even eating them
I have 4 in a tall 75 gallon, lost the 5th on day 1... and they're only a few months or so old. Right now their tankmates are immature plecos, three pearl gourami, a few rummy-nose rasboras, and five immature mollies. Everyone seems happy, but I want to add a few more sterbai before spring. I'm thinking 3 more would be great.
I had a bad memory with it. I bought one male kribensis which attacked every single fish(including barbs, cories, tetras...) in my community tank. I had never seen such heavy aggression, so I just had to give it to someone.
Great video. Thank you.
love kribensis!! I haven't been able to find it where I live but they're awesome!!! a good analog could be a domestic convict also called "Blood Parrot Chiclids" which is a breed of convict chiclids.
Wait, they’re a type of convict cichlid? 😮 Well I guess that would explain why I’ve seen what look to be hybrids between the two…
@@garg4531 by definition they are technically a domesticated animal, as they are the result from crossbreeding hybrids (blood parrot + convict) despite being hybrids they can still breed and produce offspring which look vastly different from their wild counterpart.
@@matteld3179 I am aware, but my surprise/confusion came from the how blood parrots look very different from convicts (I suppose the shape is similar enough but the colors are very different), and how their origins always seemed like it was an unsolved mystery in the aquarium hobby, with different people having their own theories regarding it
Before anybody goes out and buys 'Blood Parrot Cichlids', thinking they are a substitute for kribs, please stop and read this! Blood parrot cichlids are a hybrid species resulting from a crossing of 2 large, aggressive Central American cichlid species, which are (for the most part) sterile. They are not the result of hybridising convict cichlids with another species. There is a convict X Blood parrot hybrid, but this is blue/black in colour like the convict and is known as ice blue or polar blue cichlid in the trade, and (thankfully) it is quite rare. The parent species of blood parrots are very aggressive, highly destructive and disruptive fish, that need large tanks with equally robust tank mates. So be warned. If you are looking for an alternative to kribs, then possibly consider the African butterfly cichlid, Anomalochromis thomasi. This is another dwarf West African cichlid that is quite undemanding in its water conditions. Not as prolific as kribs but very attractive. Google it.
@@garg4531 Blood parrots are another can of worms, both convicts, severums and red terrors are so closely related they can interbreed. the most common theory is the severum + red terror crossbreed.
Pretty fish
Love this video! I love the Kribensis, they are one of my favorite fish!! 🤍🤎 Thank you Lauren!
Perfect timing looking at starting them
A pet store not too far away from where I live seems to have hengelis although only 5. I'm baffled as to why they wouldn't have ordered more of them to their wholesaler... But what do I do now? 6 is the bare minimum required. I'm going to buy the 5 they have, just because it's rare to find those in the first place and I'll ask them to keep me in the loop if they were to get more in the near future 😊
I have a 55 gallon tank with lots of plant an just community fish. It about 3 months old the only algae I have a problem with is I am starting to get stag horn on the leaves. Do you think if I got 6 omano's they would help get rid of it ? I have been using flourish excell an trying to pick it off. I did buy 3 autos but they don't touch it.
heyo - to be honest no, in my experience amano are pretty rubbish at eating algae. They will keep it clean , but they wont eat the algae itself. Fast growing plants like limnophilla and reduced feeding to keep as little nutrient in the water as possible is your best bet. Staghorn is tough though and you are in the prime 'tank trouble' phase, so don't expect fast results, keep fighting it it and it will go eventually.
@tinymenagerie Thank you I was afraid it would never go away
I’ve been obsessed with “chili “ only but now I will be satisfied with all of the tiny little beauties 🙏🙏
Hi, from America. I love you so much and have been watching your videos for at least a year now and promoting you on all my American fish keepers channels. I’m so happy that you’re doing videos more frequently. You have just helped me decide on another tetra I must have! Thank you so much for being you!! Also you made my “microworm “ life a lot easier with that video.
Thanks, that's really kind and encouraging of you. I'm trying to do more videos and keep to something of a schedule. Red eyes are a charming tetra, wonderfully laid back and easy to keep, well worth looking into.
Silver Flying Fox loves hair algae, and it's a fantastic fish. I keep a couple in most of my fish tanks. Wonderful cold water fish too
Cool video
Waiting for your video ❤
I have the Borarus maculatus (9 in a little species only tank) and I love them. They are not at all timid, use all levels of the water, and eat anything small enough to fit in their mouths. Possibly their bravery comes from the tank being heavily planted, but if they see me getting close, they all congregate excitedly at the surface expecting food, lol. Such elegant and personable wee fish.
I work at a pet store, and we sell black neon tetras pretty regularly. But you're right about kuhli loaches. They are TINY.
Danio wintinii are great either. Less than an inch.
What is the other species in there with them?
BROWN OR PALE SEE THRU BROWN
Thanks for sharing these adorable fish. Have you ever seen any sort of mating behavior from them? I have Maculatus and am super curious to know if Rasboras (other than cpd's) have been bred readily in the hobby.
This is such an underrated channel. Your choice of video and voice are so soothing
I have one that is HUGE over 6 inches for sure
Nice little fish. Thank you!
I'm so glad when your videos pop up at the top of my feed 😊 I love my rasboras/boraras having chillies and dwarves. Got to accommodate phoenix and exclamation points in the future
I really enjoy your videos because I get to see a lot of the fish while learning. I have 8 chilis, and they seem much bolder by comparison - some are always out and if any of us go to watch it only takes a minute before all have appeared, I assume to beg for food.
Love em, have phoenix, chillis and exclamation points in my 240. Have around 50
Boraras is olmost like intentional inversion ov syllables of the rasbora ...😊
How about breeding them?
Seconded, would love to know how to get a breeding colony of these guys
@@HoboBrute I've gotten mine to spawn! Species only set up, heavily planted with soft water. I think the key is that the tank was old. It had been a betta's tank that sadly passed away, but that meant there was a ton of micro critters for the baby rasboras to eat. I'd say about 8 or so have made it to adulthood, with no intervention on my behalf.
I wonder if some of these boraras species can interbreed.. My fav fish family but they travel poorly I dont recommend ordering them online, buy them from shops if they are in good condition. Also from my experience, all these micro rasboras are not at all shy fish once they have settled in.
I read danios can’t go in a tank with no lid as they jump. Is that true?
Thank you!
Please make an endlers livebeares guide my favorite fish
0:19 Lol I'm watching this because I'm a kid wanting my oldest cory catfish to have a name suitable for his or her gender heh
A compiled video with stops in the film and arrows pointing out the details. Great video. Thank you
Curious to see how this goes, I keep Blue, Leopard, Celestial, and Zebra danios, never had the pearl version
My experience with red eyes they are very tough species. I set up my large fish tank over year ago, bought 8 of those tetras and till now i have 7 . It's very good resoult. I lost plenty neons, the same with panda corydoras . The worst survival rate i had with zebra danios . Bought about 10 and now im left with one or two . Otosinclus is doing very well , and they supposed to be difficult fish to keep. Going back to red eye tetras, tiny menagerie mentioned that they are brave fish. Absolutely not in my thak . They are the biggest cowards possible. Any movement in my living room and they run away under cover . And is very seldom to see them all , even during feeding only two or three the bravest shows up from under cover. But that is my experience i my tank .
My red eyes are pretty skittish too. I just put some Ottocinclus in with my school of 8 red eyes and wondered if they would pick on them. Mine seem fairly peaceful but other tetras I’ve had in the past (skirt tetras especially) would eat another fish regardless if it would fit in their mouth or not 😂 I hope my new Otto’s do great because my tetras have been awesome.
The only youtuber saying the truth while others promise doing this or that will remove it over night.
Learnt something new, courgette 😂
Thanks for the content, I want a badis but worry about disrupting shrimp in my tank and the effort of feeding them.
