I love the fact that it’s so thin but it’s still designed for you to hang the cable on it, even the 8m cable I have fits on it great. Such a neat unit.

Only thing is it gives me like no data just energy output... where do I get all this other data? Also once I have my wireless back on it goes dead? Cant believe I have to go outside click on the inverter connect etc. Just to see one bit of data.
Oh, you should be able to connect to the internet have have an app and web platform. But for direct connection, you need the customer password to see all the readouts. Ask your installer for the password if they are available.
Love my Zappi using excess solar to charge my Model Y without using charge HQ.
Yeh it’s pretty decent at following the solar curve. More responsive than charge hq too. Hopefully for you my assessment is wrong :)
A HWS with an element is about $1000 plus plumbing it in to existing pipe work and electrical. How do you get $4000 ?

Very useful videos, however I couldn't get the WPS nor the direct entry to work fully. I got the phone connected to the inverter, and also entered the modem SSID and PW, even got the green tick on "Access point connected", but it won't connect to the Solar.web for some reason. Could it be because we've got now a 5G-connected WiFi modem instead of NBN? UPDATE - It finally seems to be working again, was trying to connect the secondary inverter rather than the main one which is connected to web... Thanks for the tips!

Had an E2 installed today - Bass Coast, VIC. A bunch of firsts: my first EV and therefore charger, sparky's first charger install. Went effortlessly with install and commissioning. Plugged the car in and was charging off solar excess as it was a great day for solar. Did quite a lot of research including this channel to make my decision. App is simple to use and nicely presented as is the physical unit itself. Very happy with my choice.
We've heard nothing but happy customers when it comes to Evnex.
You really are Tesla lovers. I agree with some parts. I have a Zappi 2.1 single phase and yes, it does degrade with temperature. Ours is a metal garage and even with putting a plywood wall between the garage metal wall, it still gets hot. It will go down to 2.4KW and then back to 6.2KW. I have limited mine to 6.2KW via it's software and there are a lot of features I have not seen on others. And yes, you can lock it down via PIN. BTW..ours is now 18months old..so far...so good.
If you have a Fronius inverter - would you recommend this or the Watt pilot?
If you have 3phase or a GEN24 and want DC coupled batteries then the Wattpilot is probably best. If your a Tesla owner I'd say the Evnex for the button. You can buy Type2 to Type2 cables with a tesla unlock button but they are $$. If you see our last video we have a round up where we compare chargers

Just a quick question while I'm trying to get the set up for my solar system right: If i have 18 kW of solar panels, a 10 kW inverter, on a sunny Summer day the system could be generating 16 kW but would it be "clipped" to 10 kW due to the inverter being 10 kW or would it be able to handle all 16 kW by giving 10 kW to the house + battery and diverting 6 kW to charge the car?
It will be clipped to 10 kW due to the inverter being 10kW. If you have DC Coupled batteries you could divert the excess to a battery (inverter/battery system dependent) but to push it into the car via all level 2 charges its an AC connection so the solar array power would have to pass through the inverter first. You might be able to push the excess into a car with a DC EV charger similar to the SigEnergy SigenStor.
@Yorick_Mark so clipping is avoidable if the system set up allows for it?
@@MrThaiLuan Depending of what type of DC coupled battery or integrated DC ev charger you install. You should be able to minimise loss due to clipping. until the batteries are full
@@Yorick_Mark I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on this anywhere. Essentially if your system is producing 16 kW and your inverter can only handle 10 kW, you're losing 6 kW per hour. I originally thought that if you installed an EV charger upstream of the inverter (so the power gets to the charger before it gets to the inverter) then you might be able to utilise ALL the generated power from the solar arrays, but no-one has talked about this anywhere.
@@MrThaiLuan Basically, all the home EV chargers are on the AC side of the inverter so the bottleneck is the 10kW inverter. Have a look at the SigEnergy SigenStore DC-Charger. I think that it can divert power directly from the array and not be limited by the inverter size as it only does a DC to DC Voltage conversion not the DC to AC conversion. But I am not 100% sure as I am still getting my head around this product.
Wow, great review. As an expat Kiwi, makes me proud to see a NZ company punching above their weight. BTW, here in mountainous Victoria, we have never had any of the 8 or so different EVSE's derate... it just doesn't get hot enough :)

V2H or V2G or can only charge the car?
Just a charger. Like with pretty much all EVSE units. V2G/V2H coms protocols are all proprietary and often require a specific charger linked to the make and model of car plus the charger it self needs to essentially be a mini inverter. It will come with time but a standard V2H/V2G protocol needs to be established first.
I have the gen24 byd system have you set up any systems to allow integration of ev charging to utilise ev tariff and not draw down on battery during low tariff rates?
Yes. Its pretty easy to do. You can set the maximum/minimum charge rates for the batteries during the cheap period. You would just set the maximum discharge to zero during the low price period. What we have done for a few customers is have the battery set to charge from the grid during the cheap period if its during the day as this can supplement the solar on overcast days,
It’s a great charger. I’ve got it on a cabin with only a 20A supply, it prioritises the cabin reducing the charge as you switch stuff on.

I’ve had an Evnex charger for about 6 months now, we also have BYD batteries with fronius inverters and Selectronix. Excess solar to car charging, love it. Originally I did not flag in the Evnex app that we had a battery so I couldn’t work out why it was drawing from the battery. I contacted Evnex and they sorted it quickly by accessing the charger via 4g and changing the setting. Great service, no issues since!
I'm glad that works well. I would normally recommend the Wattpilot with the Fronius + BYD option.
I called into their facility in Christchurch, NZ last year. A friendly bunch, happy to answer my rather basic questions. Glad I have waited for their Gen 2 EVSE. Their charger offers 2 cable length options, 5m or 8m. Apart from the storage of the longer cable, is there any downside to getting the 8m? The Tesla interlock feature is the icing on the cake. I’ve always pronounced this company Eee-Vee-Nex.
EVnex pronunciation? I asked the same question, and I said it right (hopefully). I’d go for a longer cable if you don’t mind the potential mess of cable hanging. No technical downside.
The Tesla interlock makes it one of the best EV chargers on the market for Tesla owners. Especially if you want charge on solar functionality.
Hi. Thing that seems to being missed is that newer bigger solar systems are export limited eg 5kwh. Further complications. I want to export the maximum, others the minimum. Too much power in the grid. Too little power in the grid. So far, level 1 charging as been fine even if just doing it manually.
Yeh this is another reason to have a faster charger, so you can soak up solar, instead of it being export limited!
@@mcelectrical Thanks guys for excellent review. On the above point, do you know if it will give the car the first dibs on the excess solar before export limiting. I only been given 2.5kwh export limit, so would be pretty annoying if that kicked in. It's more of an evnex question I guess, but if you do know for sure would be great if you can share. thx.
Yes! That’s exactly what it does. Sends power to your car instead of sending it to the grid.

Yeh. Sales people should be able to trust this type of claim from a company. Unfortunately not.
@mcelectrical It's brand new out, made by Renogy who are more aimed at campervans, caravans and marine, it's called the Renogy ShadowFlux... Won't let me put link here, but you google it and find it on the Renogy website. It claims to have cell level shadow technology and uses 16 busbars with a constant 36 vaults which is really high for a 200w panel. There are youtubers tested it and their tests look more real, done from home etc and seems to work really well with shade. Very expensive for a 200w panel, but thats OK in campervan world cos you only need 2 or 3. Wouldn't be good value for residential!
great video as always. I have a Fronius inverter and smart meter and originally thought to stay in the same ecosystem but the need to go out to the internet to monitor/read the excess power for charging from solar is just a bad implementation. Went with the Evnex and it is SO solid, the sparky that installed it says it's basically all he does now (that and repair/replace Zappi chargers... hmmm)

Regarding the Fronius Wattpilot. Fronius didnt build it. It's an OEM charger made by go-e. Infact if you goto go-e website you will find this charger with 3 times cheaper the price and alot more features, especially there will be no restriction of features to limit yourself to Fronius inverters conditions.
Yeah, probs should have been mentioned but the Fronius branded unit does integrate with the Fronius Solarweb platform. Many inverter-branded EVSEs are variations on existing charges. Same with almost all the EV manufacturer charges. I think the Mercedes charger is a Wallbox EVSE inside a Merc housing.
Good point. As I understand it, fronius designed it and it was made by others. But if you can buy it so much cheaper - that’s interesting. I’ll look into it.
I purchased a 10Kw Fronius system 3 years & was told it was battery ready but only on 1 phase unless I want 3 batteries. I also installed a Tesla charger & found the dedicated solar companies to charge outrageous cost to install the charger. I find the whole industry dishonest & ripping off unsuspecting customers for what is not really a complex installation after all a Tesla Wall Connector is 5 wires
That’s a bit harsh tarring us all with the same brush. When installing a ev charger, it’s easy to cut corners. We would often put it on a 40 amp rcbo and run 10mm. This way it’s compliant and ready to charge at max capacity. That makes it more complex. I know many sparkles will just give you 16amps per phase. That probably suits many cars today and makes the job much easier and cheaper - but not really compliant.
I live in a gated ‘lifestyle’ community in northern NSW. As such, the electricity is provided to individual houses through an ‘embedded network’. Ie Essential Energy only provides the infrastructure to the ‘gate’ of the complex. With, presumably, the complex owner responsible for internal power distribution. Most of the houses have solar panels and Essential Energy have put an export limit on the total amount of solar power that can be exported from the community as a whole. Somehow, this is partitioned among the individual residences but I am not sure how. Do you have any information on how this could happen? There is a concern that the allocation of an export limit to an individual residence is not being done in an equitable fashion.
Hmm, no specific knowledge on this but it sounds difficult to make export limiting equitable. Not sure how they would do that to be honest. You’d have to ask them how they are controlling individual inverters as a group.
I don't believe the reviews of the SHadowflux either, as they all have affiliate links. So no idea if it's true with those either.
Can you look at the new Renogy 200w Shadow Flux please, I'm wanting either 2 of those ShadowFlux for a total 400w on my campervan or 1 Aiko 510w all black 2nd gen. Not sure which would be best in shade and best when flat on campervan roof.

Any thoughts on the new Wattpilot that’s on the way?
Looks fine, has updated housing and is a tethered unit. From what I was told it will be functionally identical to the current Wattpilot home/go range.
You can also hang your cable on it which is an improvement.
@@mcelectrical Big time. I also expect the housing will be a bit more robust. Still needs a Tesla charge port unlock button like the Evnex. Come on Fronius (and every other EVSE manufacturer)
What would you recommend if someone plans to buy a tesla car, has a fronius inverter and plans to get a battery in the near future? .. which eco system is the better option?
It depends. Is it a Fronius Gen24 inverter? Are you single phase or three phase at home?
@mcelectrical It's a fronis symo 12.5, 3 phase inverter (installed about 6 months ago...not sure on the generation ). Car purchase is likely to be in the next 6 months, battery purchase is probably 2 years off depending on price movement.
@@PowderfingerRabbit There has been talk about a 3-phase Powerwall in development so that would probably be a good way to go if it ever becomes available. Based on the fact that its the 12.5kW inverter, your Fronius Symo is the older SnapINverer model that is the non-hybrid. You would either need to AC couple a battery or upgrade the inverter and have a DC-couped battery. SigEnergy have an interesting solution with an option for a 25kW DC charger (hopefully with a Tesla unlock button soon). But either option I would remove the Fronius and wire the array into the battery system.
You really missed the opportunity to comment on the Catchpower Control integration with different EV chargers (which you are already installing for inverter and hotwater control anyway)
Hey Scott or Ben? 😉. Good point. I haven’t tested that yet. But, if we install a Fronius we would do a Fronius charger - unless they drive a Tesla. Does Catch control the Tesla wall connector? Sounds like enough content for another video!
@@mcelectrical At the time of filming only the Wattpilot was compatible. Now there are some more options to test.
Is the Zappi V1 or V2? Apparently V1 wasn't prepared for Aussie summers and failed. V2 improves on it and can handle the heat. I've got one and the smart features are great.
You would have hoped so. They gave me the latest version (with the wifi chip) and tried several times to uodate the software. That was the one that derated the worst.
@@mcelectrical Both Mark and I own the V2 models. I had 2 warranty claims on my V2 unit. One full replacement and the second cable only replacement.
On controlling access, the Zappi allows you to set a pin code to access the charger.
Or put it in an enclosure and set it ti "stop" and control it from the app.
I’m not sure I’d put it in an enclosure, just with the heat issue. But good to know @paulawallis that you can set a PIN code.
Our Watt Pilot Go every now and then loses connection to our inverter and won’t reconnect without a reboot. Frustrating when your plugged in half the day and then find it hasn’t been charging because of no connection to inverter.
Hmm that’s a worry. Might need a wifi booster?
@ I wish it was that simple. Booster is no more then 4-5m from the charger and inverter. Its connection seems stable, but drops the inverter and will not reconnect automatically without a reboot. But the whole time I can access the charger and router from the same wifi.
@@whateverthishit I would first make sure that the Fronius inverter software is fully up to date this might solve it. If not it might be worth installing a CatchPower device. This allows you to get the export data via another source and enables the Wattpilot to charge on solar with non-fronius inverters as it has its own WiFi connection that would be separate from the Fronius inverter. The catch can directly replace the Fronius smart meter or be used independently. I don't know if the Wattpilot priorities the Fronius inverter data over the catchpower OCPP connection and if that would be an issue.
@@Yorick_Markthanks for the ideas. I already have a catch power. Also all software across all devices are up to date. I may actually rollback the wattpilot to an older version and see if that help.
Just had the Wattpilot Go and a Smart meter installed, already have the Fronius inverter, and I have to say, they work like a dream! Set it once and forget it. It only charges when there’s excess solar, and the best part is it doesn’t need an internet connection for the solar loading features to work, it figures out within seconds when it doesn’t need to pull power from the grid, way faster than those systems that rely on the internet. Ha, nice. It is super accurate at tracking solar surplus. Maybe it looks fine. Just not as ergonomic as a Tesla wall connector.
I just wish it had a place to hang the cable and had a tethered cable. I have always felt that tether-less chargers are more suited to publicly accessible chargers or shared charges like at at place of work. There is an updated model that is tethered that should be available sometime this year that will be the predominant Wattpilot model that will be installed.
Took me a minute to mount a simple L-bracket with a lip as a cable holder, bought from Bunnings for a couple of bucks. I mounted the bracket below the Wattpilot, it works great.
I am very familiar with Fronius welding equipment. It is the Rolls Royce of welding equipment being very well designed, robust and reliable. This quality and reliability played a large part in my decision when getting MC Electrical to install a Fronius Wattpilot along with Fronius inverter and BYD Battery back in July 2024. The inverter and battery have performed flawlessly, not so the Wattpilot. From the get go the Wattpilot had issues with connectivity to the data source (pilot) in the inverter and would not capture power (kWh) the Wattpilot has sent to the car. This was partially fixed with Firmware Version 42.0 with connectivity being rock solid and accurately capturing PV surplus power sent to the car with the Wattpilot in Eco mode, not allowing use of PV battery. However the Wattpilot still has issues after Firmware 42.0 update: 1/ When in Normal Mode it does not capture the grid portion of power sent to the car, only the PV surplus portion. It does not capture the total amount (grid power plus PV surplus) sent to the car. 2/ When in Eco Mode, allowing discharge of the PV Battery it again only captures the PV surplus power sent to the car. It does not capture the total amount of power (battery power plus PV surplus) sent to the car. I sent detailed documentation to Shane to confirm and explain the above issues with the Wattpilot post Firmware 42.0 update. Shane contacted Fronius who raised a ticket advising it is an issue with Wattpilot Data Aggregation on Solar.web, is sporadic and only occurs when Eco Mode is enabled and something to do with API data. This was back in September 2024. Shane contacted Fronius again in December 2024 when I sent him an email asking if he has had an update from Fronius on rectifying this. To date there has been no indication from Fronius as to when this issue will be resolved. From a charging only viewpoint the Wattpilot is rock solid. However the firmware side is very disappointing. I hope Fronius does the right thing and sorts this issue out. The Wattpilot is not up to the standard I have experienced with their other products and I would be reticent to recommend it until the issue is rectified.
Will you share the data from your testing of each charger?
Recording and presenting data just takes more time than I think it’s worth to be honest. My setup is fairly simple - I don’t have temperature loggers as such, just a stat and a live camera on the setup so I can watch it. Was there particular data you were interested in?
@@mcelectrical how can we trust the testing was fair and balanced without the data to back it up? EVs can also overheat and derate charging, there's variance between 3 phase chargers running at 16A per phase vs a single phase one charging at 32A, energy losses from charge cable and AC/DC conversion. If you're holding manufacturers accountable to a high standard you should at least match it.
What would you recommend if a) you didnt have a Tesla EV (nor a Tesla Powerwall) and/or b) didn't have a Fronius Inverter (or battery) - but still wanted Solar smart charging features, etc

If you have single-phase, Evnex. It's a very nice charger. I would still suggest the Wattpilot as an option on 3-phase paired with a catch. The fact that the Wattpilot can switch between single-phase and 3-phase charging makes it far more precise for charging on solar surplus when there is less excess power.
We've had our Evnex installed since March 2024 and it's been working fine. It was installed by a friend who is a sparky and owed me a favour so the installation only cost $150 for parts and it took the sparky a bit over an hour for the installation which was beside my meter box. Now that we've installed solar, the car just receives excess solar and I try to plug the car in when Ambers FIT has gone negative. A friend who also has an EV and is planning on a second had also bought an Evnex that's working fine. Their customer service was responsive when I was asking questions before the install and I like that is made in the region

You didn’t mention how the Evnex performed in heat stress testing. I just had one installed this morning. The internals look very well built and neatly laid out. Had a problem with set up and the support was timely and super helpful. It looks super neat on the wall and lets you coil even my 8m cable over the unit. I’m really happy I chose it. (I don’t have a Tesla so not at all interested in Tesla features).
It performed about the same as the Tesla Wall Connector and Fronius Wattpilot, derating to 25 amps after a few hours of charging in the heat test.

Yep the Tesla charger is so easy and simple to use my wife can do it.
I think its crazy that its not more common with how prevalent teslas are. A big plus for the Evnex on that one.
