Secret Harbor Freight Engine Hoist Upgrade
I dont know if it's actually a secret, but this combination air/hydraulic 8 ton ram upgrade for your engine hoist is a game changer. In this video, we will have a race between using the air raise feature, and the traditional jack handle raise. I'm also going to show you how this upgrade can help those mechanics who often work by themselves.
Best of all, this Harbor Freight part was only $27 more than a standard replacement ram. So it's cheap!

That I spend another $329 to buy a new hoist that I would then have to put together? I want to asses the "repair" function myself on two older batters that I failed to keep properly charged several years, including in harsh and subzero winter temps, "foolish me". When I tested the battery in my car, the meter indicated "completely empty of charge". Since then, it would not completely recharge, but has been been starting my car "so far". You can wrap the old plastic with carbon fiber veil cloth with resin to prevent future cracks or to build up a little material on brittle plastic. Alternative to PC7 or epoxy filler from JB weld, Press N Seal wrap larger cracks will allow liquid resin to flow into a crack without spillage with dental syringes. Then sand & paint as normal. More labor intensive in wrapping the wheel, but will greatly reduce the chances of cracks reappearing. This is the method a Canadian wheel restorer uses as well as balsam wood for filling. His prices are about the same a wheel recasting. This is the method I am going to use to repair mine. Another method is similar in patching with fillers and paints is to cut an aftermarket wheel up for the ring and weld to the old standoffs to eliminate 90% of the filling repairs.

    • @CatfishMotorsports
      @CatfishMotorsports หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would for sure like to try that. Mine has helped up decently a year later but did develop a couple small cracks over the winter where it expanded and contracted with temperature cycling. Which is why I stressed that others should take more time v-notching their cracks than I did. It still looks very good considering the minimal effort I put it in it.

    The benefits of a low power charger is you can use a UPS to power the charger while you are out and about, 15w 1Amp is nothing for UPS's, but it may just be the difference between stranded somewhere or not. I always bring a Craftsman 20v Battery 150w AC Inverter with me to power additional 12v fog lights (with an AC-DC 12v power supply of course), so i may just keep the charger in the truck for just in case moments.

      @@CatfishMotorsports Just an update regarding this, yeah i'm glad i got that charger. I can just use the craftsman V20 battery/150W inverter and place it in the engine bay along with the charger when i get home to maintain the battery and it works great (instead of using a long extension cord). The reason why i do this is because i have a sound system with a 500w Amp and two 12's that tend to drain the battery (headlight dimming during bass hits) etc, so this helps me make sure my battery is never an issue.

    My daily driver is a 1990 V8, I switch thermostats in the fall and spring. If I dont switch temperature ratings, it runs too hot in the summer, or too cold in the winter. Yes, I have a larger new radiator, and a good pump. 3 weeks ago I drove in +5 weather, and this summer I will be in 102 weather with the A/C on. I've had the same issue with other engines that were of the same architecture, but from 1963. My point is this: cheap thermostats vary all over the place on temperature, and I can see it on my autometer mechanical gages. The robert shaw thermostats are consistent. Its money well spent.

      I’ve seen it all. I should have posted up an image of this bellows style thermostat I got out of a flathead. Never seen one like it. But I haven’t had a single issue out of those Richard Shaw type high flow units.

    Have you tried the reconditioning function of the charger? I got an old car with “dead” battery. I connected the battery to a C-Tek charger to recondition. The battery functions as new now.

    Watching your video and reading the comments, without being controversial and a fellow Pontiacker just putting it out there, one has overlooked a few important steps which was not offered up here. One realizes this video might just be a quick reference for the already-tree-shaded mechanic, but this video will be recommended to the myriad of immature saplings that think GTA-V is a driving instruction video tutorial. One having battery problems wants to first grab a DVOM to check the voltage remaining, just as one did, in order to properly begin diagnosis, but one overlooked an additional DVOM test that has to be performed before concluding that connecting the charger/jumpers is the next step. After checking voltage, one would be remiss to not select DVOM ohm/resistance to determine the presence of sulfation/internal continuity to then proceed repair from there. Skipping that step can present an unplanned, unexpected, internal self-disassembly sequence of the battery, and can also cause new damage to the charger/jumping vehicle's electronic software and hardware, too. Another step overlooked, or just possibly skipped over for this video, was that one having battery issues should check the physical condition of the cells by removing the service caps checking that the electrolyte level is above the substrate and topping up with distilled water if below before going forward with any repair. Again, just looking out for the tiny saplings that tend to destroy everything they touch by spraying the interior surfaces with neon colors or cambering their wheels excessively, but they kind of do deserve whatever they get, kind of.

      That is a thorough comment my friend! I’ll have to look up the rapid disassembly part and the ohm test. I’ll admit that’s a new one to me. Funny (or not so funny) I managed to get battery acid in my eye once removing the caps. Dumbass move not wearing safety glasses on my part. So I’m generally reluctant to tell people to do it. I kinda look at it more that this is a high percentage solution. If this doesn’t result in a charged battery, you can likely just call it a core. But yes you can get in the weeds and do some more in depth checks for sure. Thank you for watching!

      @@CatfishMotorsports The acid splash is a bit concerning, but one can just lay a newspaper or junk rag over screwdriver and cap to prevent unintended eyewash. My own anecdote of Battery by battery is exactly that internal resistance subject. Pulled a customer car in for No Crank and determined no power, hooked up battery charger to it- a good one as discussed- and turned around to turn on charger. The battery exploded quite ceremoniously and immediate but luckily just disintegrated in mostly upward blast pattern from inside the fender well that brought all other techs running and ultimately laughing... ha... ha. Batteries are more durable than many think and can be brought back from a lot of deaths. But one really has to respect that internal resistance and those fantastic electrolyte fountain features!

      @@CatfishMotorsports Oh yeah, a big one many are unaware of is that battery acid and corrosion can easily be washed/rinsed away by hot water... That simple. Yes, baking soda water is efficiently better but not always on hand. All parts and aspects of a car are all equally important to be well knowledgeable of.

      @@fyrbyrd71 My case was trying to revive one by replacing the catalyst (didn't work in this case) but there was a little bit of the liquid on the rim around the cell holes. When I popped the cap back in place it snapped down hard, into that small puddle. Splashed right into my eye. Again, stupid on my part not to be wearing glasses when I knew I was working with a corrosive material. But yeah, I see people locally selling refurbished batteries if you provide them your bad core. So Im sure they can be revived. I just didn't have luck when I tried to do it myself. I did get to spend 20 minutes in my shower flushing my eyes out though lol.
