    In a way it was back to the beginning with this album, with the band trying out a variety of styles. I do like the diversity here, but I don't think it's as strong as the albums to come. Showdown is the stand out for me. I wish the band had done more in this vein, remembering that this is just before Boz Scaggs hit the big time with Lowdown. I think Phil very much had his finger on the pulse of what was happening musically. There were quite a few bands in the UK around this time blending rock music with funk and soul, but it never really made much impact on the mainstream.

    Two significant things happened in the run up to this album. The band recorded a number of Deep Purple covers under the name, Funky Junction: Phil was involved in the Baby Face sessions with Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice. I suspect both those things prompted Phil to raise his game as a musician and maybe toughened up the direction of the band. He did once mention in an interview that Ritchie Blackmore was the best guitarist he ever played with. In my opinion, Vagabonds,,,, is as strong as any album in Lizzy's catalogue. It may not be the "classic" sound, but I think Phil's lyricism is at its peak here: from the ecological concerns of Mama Nature Said, the price of fame in The Hero and the Madman, to the autobiographical allusions of the title track and Little Girl in Bloom. Phil's writing became more concise, but I don't think he was ever quite so eloquent again. I wouldn't want to rewrite history because what is to come is great, but I think something was also lost.

    I don't really distinguish between this and the debut, because I actually own them as part of a compilation. along with some other non-album tracks. I think I might prefer the tracks here. I like the title track a lot, and I think that it's kind of hazy and disjointed is part of its appeal. It drifts like incense. I get lost in dream when I listen to it.

    I started your series at the end, so now I'll go back to the beginning. There is a lot of charm to this album but it's easy to see why it didn't make much headway in the musical climate of the time. The band just hasn't established a strong enough musical identity. The musical antecedents of the band are clear enough: Clapton and Cream, Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, their Irish folk roots, Van Morrison, and possibly some Love and Fairport Convention; but there's little hard rock on show. I like the folk influences and the intimate and unguarded nature of Phil's writing. I think an awful lot of how much you will or will not love Thin Lizzy is dependent on how much you buy into Phil Lynott, the man and the myth. I remember an interview with Eric Bell where he suggested that when it came to mixing the album the wrong guitar tracks were used, and he was very unhappy with the result. I don't know how true this is. I think the strongest tracks are on the EP. Dublin is one of Phil's best songs, even if its understated nature doesn't make this immediately obvious. Very few song lyrics can really stand alone as poetry. but these do. Phil had a sense for the rhythm of language as he had with his vocal phrasing that was more than ordinary. Things Ain't Working Out... is a song that could easily stand alongside the songs from the "classic" era of the band. My verdict at this stage would be that there was talent in the band but it was yet to be translated into real promise.

I love all of those you picked,Nighttrain and Out To Get Me were my favorites at 13 and I Despised Paradise City.I missed part of the episode but no one mentioned Garage Days.Just Like Heaven is the best Cure song,even if The Forest was/is the live highlight.

    Thin Lizzy is one of my top three rock bands, so there are no really bad albums IMO, but of course some are stronger than others. I'll do it in group of threes for my ranking, because some are too close to rank them one above the order: 12-10 - Debut, Shades of a Blue Orphanage and Thunder & Lightning (definitely the best of the three) 9-7 - Vagabonds, Nightlife, Fighting - all three pretty much on the same level 8/10 6-4 - Chinatown (8/10), Bad Reputation (9/10), Jailbreak (9/10) 1-3 - Renegade (9.5/10), Johnny the Fox (10), Black Rose (10) I just got the box set 1976 - highly recommanded! It was really the highpoint in their career. I also like Lizzy when they are doing mellow stuff. Lynott was a romantic at his heart, maybe this is one reason I don't like Thunder that much. It was a fun series, I enjoyed it! Thanks!

    Thank you @delorangeade! Yes, 39 years ago today we lost a wonderful and talented musician and storyteller. Good point with the metal move being necessary in '83. In hindsight, perhaps they should have went this route with Renegade in '81 when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was at its peak. Thank you for sharing your story with "The Sun Goes Down". I am sure many of us the world over are raising a glass to Phil today.

    I was excited by this album when it was first released, and loved the energy that John Sykes brought to the band, but in hindsight it really isn't a satisfactory album from my point of view. The move into metal was both credible and necessary at that point in time, but I don't think Phil's songwriting at this stage was really up to the job, and Sykes added little in that department. Three tracks stand out: Holy War, the band's last great song; Cold Sweat, John Sykes announcing his arrival; The Sun Goes Down, one of Scott's finest solos, and very emotional live with Phil's broken down voice and confessional ad-libs. It was a song I kept going back to in the days after Phil died. That anniversary comes round again tomorrow.

    Live and Dangerous was the first album I ever bought, and it remains my favourite to this day. If you listen to the full shows now available nothing much was done to the performances other than edits to fit on four sides of vinyl. I believe Life/Live was adjusted quite heavily after the fact, and it sounds over processed to me, so I find the BBC recording of the band's final UK show at the Reading Festival far more satisfactory. The BBC engineers and producers sometimes did a better job than bands would have on their official recordings. A show of which only a few songs were officially released, but a portion of which was broadcast by the BBC, and should be easy to find, is a great show from Hammersmith, Christmas 1981, featuring Snowy White. It's an effective antidote to the disappointing DVD of their German show earlier in the year,

      @ericrobertson2024 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep, the 1980 - 83 gigs were hampered by the chemicals as Phil often "had a cold" and Scott was flubbing often during some shows such as that one in Germany and another in France. Gorham attempted to replace Brian + Snowy did more bluesy,melodic stuff which was more Gorham's forte previously, Atleast that's how I perceive the guitarists during the early 80s which I think was the right way to go. That solo White did in Pressure Will Blow reminded me of Kraftwork lol

    • @delorangeade
      @delorangeade 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ericrobertson2024 You're right. I think the band missed having a more aggressive player alongside Scott, ad he has to go out of his comfort zone to balance Snowy. Scott playing the solo on Emerald doesn't really work for me.

    If I only had to listen to the catalogue of a single band, that band would be Thin Lizzy. They rank alongside Deep Purple as my favourite bans of all time. Black Rose would be my pick for the band's best studio album. I don't think it's the best set of songs Phil ever wrote, but I think it's the best recorded of their albums and I love the way it punches out of the speakers. Chinatown is probably my least favourite, not a complete write-off, but a crashing disappointment after its predecessor. I think Brian Downey was the best all round rock drummer of his era, or I'd put him on the same level as Ian Paice. He had the chops, but he also had the feel and the versatility that Neil Peart, for example, lacks. If I listen to a Thin Lizzy cover, it's the drumming I listen to first, because that feel is what will make or break it for me. Brian Robertson was my favourite of the guitar players. He brought the fiery attitude the band needed, but he was also a better team player alongside Scott Gorham than Gary Moore was. I think there were two Phil Lynotts: the poet and the rock star. As time went on the former was swallowed by the latter, a good career move but maybe artistically a disappointment. I love his writing on the Eric Bell albums in the same way I love Bruce Springsteen's first two albums. It has the same small town intimacy coupled with wide-eyed naivety. Van Morrison being the common thread between them. I think there's a real honesty to Phil's writing on those albums that maybe became tempered with a more cynical edge as he progressed. So I always have the sense that, as great as Phi and Thin Lizzy were, they still could have done more. And I think that slight sense of underachievement is actually part of the appeal of the band, The band of the street fighter, the underdog and the broken-hearted.

      Thank you and welcome aboard, @delorangeade! I agree with the letdown of Chinatown after Black Rose. I should have mentioned Ian Paice when discussing Brian Downey. It seems that Ian was that underrated drummer for many years but now he gets the respect that he deserves. I hope one day that Brian does. I agree with you on Phil as well as your assessment on his more intimate writing on those albums with Eric Bell. As much as I love the first 5 albums by Bruce Springsteen, I go back to the first two quite often and The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle is my favorite Bruce album. I believe that what you expressed in your last 3 sentences sums up the thoughts of a lot of us who love this band. Thank you for your post! Cheers!

    I think at this point Anette Olzon could sing an old script from Hogan's Heroes and I'd love it. Her CD Rapture is great until the final track and is my favorite album of the year, she's been the vocalist on a few other favs this century from Dark Element and Nightwish..I liked the most recent Smashing Pumpkins CD,they've kinda turned out to be the most enduring band from the "grunge" era..The Ace Frehley album has a few catchy tracks..The Cure album is their best since Wish..I like Invincible Shield but I think people overpraised it somewhat,and maybe devalued Firepower which has more strong tracks imo..

I prefer Invincible Shield over Firepower (8.5 to 8) as an album but if we were to go individual tracks, I prefer "Never the Heroes" and "Lightning Strike" over the best songs from Invincible Shield. @JohntheMusicNut For whatever reason,via the app or dl when i first listened to Firepower , the title track was missing and I didn't hear it until later,it's my favorite Priest track since Blood Stained..Olzon like Tim Owens was a replacement for a well loved singer. Between the 2 of them, they've been involved with so many different projects/bands that I love , him with Iced Earth, Beyond Fear to KK's Priest and with her Dark Element and the 2 recent solo albums. Now I want a duet of both Exciter + Creek Mary's Blood lol. It's actually odd they haven't collaborated...I'm not as High on the Cure album as Grant, it's more that I was low on the stuff post Wish.

      @JohntheMusicNut I became more critical as I got older,I never would've admitted the Simmon's tracks on the 1984-89 Kiss albums suck at the time.. I will also defend some contrarian releases like Walking Through Fire - April Wine, sure it's got the mid 80s synths and weird noises throughout, yet it has 7 strong tracks and wasn't the first time they did a more pop oriented LP, or even the 5th time.I had trouble just placing one track from it in my top 10 last month during Grant's episode for 1986 which was a ground rule for me lol...I have very little defense for Shades,but an album like Renegade does have bright spots like Pressure & Angel.

    • @JohntheMusicNut
      @JohntheMusicNut 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ericrobertson2024 Yes, I did as well but I believe it had to do with learning more as I went older. So as for the 84-89 Kiss tracks from that era, I preferred Paul's more from the get go.The Gene tunes that grabbed me had cool riffs. I loved "Burn Bitch Burn" and "Murder in High Heels" but now, I can only say love the riffs but not the songs. Then you had songs like "Trial by Fire" and most of his songs on Hot in the Shade that did little for me then or now. Speaking of more pop oriented records, I appreciate Crazy Nights more than I used to. It's weird! "Hell or High Water" and "Good Girl Gone Bad" are so cheesy lyrically (what a corny bridge in the latter) but there is something catchy about those for me now. Yeah, I am with you on Renegade and Shades has part of the interesting yet different dynamic that I dig on the debut but no bangers and Phil's vocals aren't recorded well.

I also saw them in a big club with Ricky Warwick and Damon Johson around 2012. I think Sykes plays on the Still In Love With You on Live/Life. Originally, they put a Sykes version of SILWY on the T&L 12" b side because they wanted a Gary version on Live/Life. Thanks Byron! Oh that's cool you saw them and with John leading the band. They played Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe, PA when I saw them in 2011. They had around 600 people in an 1,800 seat venue. Thanks for the correction with John (not Gary) playing on "Still in Love with You" on Life/Live. That's great info there on that take, I didn't know that. Thanks Byron! Cheers!

    After hearing live versions of This Is The One,it's bewildering why it wasn't included. Leave the 2 "Baby" tracks off,and a few others and these are both perfect..Sykes not Moore is playing on Still In Love..I think Rocker was the only time Robbo + Sykes were on stage together,my 2 favorite members..I give both albums 8/10,I like Live and Dangerous slightly more....Here comes Jim Ross to review Robertson's work = "Katie bar the door,that lacerated hand from the Bar Brawl For All didn't slow Robbo down,as God is my witness,that guitar is on fire here in London."

Wow, I never thought of that with Robbo and Sykes only playing on stage together during this time and that makes sense. Haha, love the Jim Ross review. Maybe one day I will do one of those shows in the mannerisms of Ross, Solie, Caudle, Russell, Schiavone, etc. Cheers!

      @JohntheMusicNut I heard Caudle's voice every Saturday at noon on channel 12 from Winston Salem, NC growing up. He was just right because he didn't bury the heels like David Crockett and he didn't take it THAT seriously like he was Al Michaels lol..Another who had a unique voice was Buddy Colt on the FL show,which didn't air here until 86.

      @@JohntheMusicNut Sometimes it seemed Colt + Solie helped the kids in Tampa abstain from alcohol by consuming it all themselves, but they were always on point with the commentary. Colt really loved Jesse Barr ala Ross with the Dr Death fandom,even when he was as green as a St Patrick Parade..I honestly thought FL was the top territory in the early to mid 80s yet Mid Atlantic, Mid South and GA with the national TV deal were doing well also.

    Hi John…it was the same here. Bringing Down The Horse was all over the radio but when this album came out I remember Sleepwalker being on the radio for maybe about 2 weeks and that was it. I didn’t understand because I thought that was a killer single . The album deserved better exposure on the radio. Labels were giving up too quickly back then. If a single didn’t catch on right away as previous ones they were on to something else . It’s crazy how many instances there are of this in this time period of the 90s. The Wallflowers are coming to my city in June as the opening act for ZZ Top. Thank you John. Chez

    • @JohntheMusicNut
      @JohntheMusicNut 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Chez and you are so right here! I mentioned below that this was the time that AOR stations were playing less new music and going straight up classic rock. However, you still heard Rush's tracks from Vapor Trails, also from 2000, getting played heavy around this time. So (Breach) is following a huge album and you release only 2 singles and don't give either one of them a push? Crazy. "Sleepwalker" was rocking, tight, and catchy enough to be played on AOR and Top 40 in my opinion. Yeah, I see that tour is hitting Canada. Strong double bill and the Wallflowers bring it live. I saw them in 2022 headlining a smaller venue up in Maine and they were great! I hope you get to see the show. Cheers!

    Murray Christmas, 🎄 ya MusicNut, ya! John, John, John, John, John… I was drowning, frowning and clowning… THERE! in the trenches, when this CD 💿 came out in the record shoppes. And much like Hootie’s Fairweather Johnson followup to Cracked Rearview, THIS particular platter was a stiff. In fact, like BOTH Hootie records, these two Wally albums became some of the most “traded in” CDs 💿 of all time! Add to that list: Spin Docs, Soul Asylum, GNR, U2, Cranberries, FYC, Jamiroquai, Los Lonely Boys, Madge, TLC, etc. I’m sure you can guess which albums, Witchie Poo! 😉 I hate to be a negative Nelly - oh wait, two more: Nelly, Nelly Furtado and Usher… yeah, yeah, three more, whatevs - but that’s just the way it was. I neglected to mention some PJ, Hole, Beasties, Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Tori, Sarah, Garth, Green Day, etc. I’m sure there are more examples , but maybe I’ll just text you any updates. 🤪 I’m glad that you’re a fan of many of these so-called “albums after,” but many didn’t connect with the genital pubic, oops 🙊… I mean GENERAL PUBLIC, for a multitude of reasons. The CDs 💿 were not as good, too much time had elapsed since the previous platter, the wrong single(s) was/were released, etc. Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍎 Your clone and mine, ~ The Cinnamon, Marco Minnemann, Hooligan Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.

      Merry Christmas Davey! Dude! What cartoon is THERE! in the trenches from? This is from one of those short cartoons we saw on Hatchy Milatchy (a local show on WNEP) as a kid along with Underdog, Fractured Fairy Tales, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Peabody and Sherman, etc. Oh I do remember seeing (and you still see) a lot of these albums by the Wallflowers out there dirt cheap. Jamiroquai! Wow, I still have Traveling Without Moving. Good album. I know all of these you mention except Madge. Who's that? You still see tons of used Garth cds. All of those albums and even that Chris Gaines one. Oh gosh, I bought a lot of these for a buck or two. Hole, Soundgarden, Sarah, Paula Cole, Lisa Loeb, etc. All of your points are valid and you can add changing tastes in music, lack of promotion, and changing formats on radio (AOR going completely classic rock and not playing new music) as other factors as well.
