I've got something of a "hot take" regarding the 9 different guitarists who performed in Lizzy , but i'll save it for December.19. I liked Snowy on the albums + the live shows moreso.
Another sterling show from The MusicNut! 🥜 Maybe not a top tier Lizzy LP, but you can’t deny some simply stellar songs like “Chinatown,” “Killer on the Loose,” “We Will Be Strong” and “Genocide (The Killing of the Buffalo).” 🦬 Looking forward to more funky, fresh videos from John! Cheers 🍻 from the Icy, ❄️ Cold 🥶 Big Apple. 🍎 Your clone and mine, ~ The Devilish, 😈 Delinquent, Dopamine Addicted Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.
Thanks Davey! Yes that pretty much sums up Chinatown! As Johnny Carson used to say, more to come! All I have to say is that it's super cold in PA from The Program!
Love this album between this and Black Rose I don't know which one I like better both are fantastic in my book.Title track,Genocide and Having A Good Time are my favorites.
Way back in the day, I dismissed this one and Renegade prolly because of no Robertson or Moore. But as time went by and I revisited both of them, my appreciation went up greatly. Chinatown is a 7.5/10 but the next album is even better 👍
I definitely miss Robertson on these LPs.White is a competent guitarist, the songs just aren't up to par with the Robbo era.Although White may be the least talented of the 5 during this era,he was sober and oft amazing on live shows.Agree Renegade is a stronger album.
Thanks Marlon! I do appreciate a couple songs here more than when I did the interview for Martin's book. Glad to hear that you dig Renegade. That episode is going to be interesting. Cheers!
Hi John… another great video ! Genocide, Killer On The Loose , Didn’t I and Genocide are top tracks for me on this one. Hey You is not their best closer but I think it’s decent. Great riff on Sugar Blues. Looking forward to the Renegade episode ! Thank you John. Chez
Thanks Chez! Cool top tracks here and admittedly, "Didn't I" had to grow on me more. I am looking forward to doing Renegade. No consensus opinion on this one for sure! Cheers!
Chinatown is a solid Lizzy album with some really cool songs - Hey You is such a cool closer for me, mellow at the start, cool base line and a solo that catches you by surprise. Sugar Blues, Genocide and Sweetheart are also good as their earlier songs from the mid 70-ies. I would rate it 8/10 Anyway, I prefer the next one 😀 although lot of people put it down.
Yes I don't like Renegade as much as Popoff does, but it definitely has a better ratio of good tracks.. Snowy isn't Robertson but then again who was.Snowy fits in better than anyone would expect.
Thanks Domi! Yeah, that solo in "Hey You" just shocks you after it being more mellow early. Great to hear your thoughts on Renegade. I may differ on that one! 😄 Cheers!
With all kudos to the more classic Lizzy songs in the 70s, if you A/B the old stuff with Chinatown the band, performance-wise at least, has taken a step up. They are rolling on this one.
Welcome Dudester! I agree that the performances are very strong on Chinatown even if the songs aren't quite as strong overall. Thanks for your post! Cheers!
My 2 favorite Lizzy tracks from 1980 are live versions of Got To Give It Up + Dear Miss Lonely Hearts from Dublin, not to say I don't like tracks such as Killer On The Loose,We Will Be Strong,Chinatown on this album, which i first heard 26 years after it was released. 6/10 for me..Solo In Solo also has a few bright spots but not great.
Thanks Eric! I have to relisten to Solo in Soho, it's been awhile. I first owned this right around the same time you heard it. I bought it from EMusic and burned it on a CD before I later bought the import version. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut I either heard it via WinMX, or possibly TH-cam. I didn't hear Renegade until even later...The VH 1 Behind The Music episode referenced 13 Lizzy albums, so idk if they were including Live & Dangerous, Remembering or Soho but I recall wondering about that.
@@ericrobertson2024 I actually heard Renegade later as well. If I remember that episode clearly, I believe the 13th album they referenced was Live and Dangerous.
So far this is how I rank the albums. == 1. Jailbreak / 2. Fighting / 3. Johnny The Fox / 4. Bad Reputation / 5. Black Rose / 6. Nightlife / 7. China Town / 8. Vagabonds / 9. Debut / 10. Shades...Of The live releases Live + Dangerous, King Biscuit 1980 Dublin, Still Dangerous are phenomenal and the outside efforts up to this point include Solo In Solo and Wild Horses,I like about 1/2 of each of those. ... Keep one foot on the ground and keep reaching for the moon.
Thanks for your continuing ranking as well as the live and outside projects, Eric! I am a broken record but oooh this will not be easy. That Casey Kasem catchphrase is instilled in my brain and I like your twist on it! Cheers!
I just had to paste from last week's list , with one edit...My Top 10 TL tracks from 1971-80 >> 1. Emerald / 2. Fighting My Way Back / 3. Cowboy Song / 4. Opium Trail / 5. Johnny / 6. Got To Give It Up / 7. Warriors / 8. Killer On The Loose / 9. Borderline / 10. Philomena ///. Although I like it more than ChinaTown overall,i doubt if any tracks from Renegade will hit the Eric chart so I've got a few weeks off to cruise in the Mystery Machine. LOL.
Hahaha! Thanks for your post and updated list, Eric! I must admit no matter how many times I lose my glasses like Velma did, I would have one song from Renegade in my Top 10. I'm sure you know it. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut Commenters on The Hagar series on Tim's Channel were stating correctly how VOA really loses steam on Side B,that's also the case with Renegade,i listened to both Yesterday. Copying a song that closely from the previous album is lazy, even if it's an upgrade.
This album felt off and didn’t do it for me. The opening guitars on We Will be Strong set the stage for a clean and polished sound on this album that was a flat experience. Phil’s bass playing was solid but most of the album didn’t capture me. Sugar Blues had an undeniable swagger and catchy groove, Killer on the Loose, was frantic and fun, but Phil sounded strained. Not as bad as Tate on Tribe but he still sounds strained on this song. He sounded like he was spitting into the mic at times. Fun song but poor Phil. Hey You was an excellent closer and delivered everything I wanted it to, fun dodgy bass lines, guitars with lots of space, Phils vocals have swagger, and the drumming goes from simple to frantic and delivers the beat in all the right ways. This and Shades might be tied for my least favorite. But what do I know, my favorite is the debut. Great show John. And I’m looking forward to the Album Wars show!
Thanks Jake! Yep, this is Phil's voice after all the hard living that he did in his 20's. Phil is still giving us some bangers in the songs but it's clear his voice is going downhill. For a comparison, Jim Morrison from the self-titled debut from the Doors and then 4 years and 5 more albums and his voice is shot on L.A.Woman. I am looking forward to reading your opinions on Thin Lizzy's next album, Renegade. Oh the next Album War show will be a fun one. I am thinking tomorrow (Saturday). Cheers!
I was never too sure about Snowy White in Lizzy, & I was disappointed with this album. However Chinatown, Sugar Blues, Killer & Genocide are …. well killer. I like the album more now than I did then.
As I've listened to the 2 albums with White and heard live shows from 1980-82 it's become clear that Snowy wasn't the main detriment to this era. The songcrafting, chemicals, production, Phil's voice deteriorating were more to blame. Snowy had to do Brian's guitar parts in live shows, while Gorham often struggled to remember/perform his own.
Thanks Parish! Yes, you know if I experienced this in real time (I didn't really get heavy into the band until the mid 2000s), I may have felt the same. Yes, around half of it is killer. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut I think these albums post Robbo each decline in quality a bit. I relistened to Renegade Sunday , the 4th track(Leave This Town) is basically Sugar Blues with different and better lyrics but I might've been wrong about it being better than China Town. My Casey Kasem alter ego need not be summoned just yet lol
@@ericrobertson2024 Eric, you’re no doubt right but at the time we didn’t know any of that. So it was easy to blame the new band member. Having said that, when I saw them live at that time SW had no stage presence which compounded the view he was the weak link.
@@parishofrock2963 Ironically by the Renegade tour he may have been the only one aware he was present on a stage during the concerts lol . I liked Snowy and his interpretations of the Robbo era were fine ,yet side 2 of Renegade is embarrassing compared to the mid 70s output.
Just listening to snowy white and how great of a guitarist he is but a blues player nonetheless and to be in this band.. lots of cool cuts..
Thanks Ernesto! I agree with both of your sentiments. Cheers!
