    The internet doesn’t seem as fun as it used to, especially when it comes to communities. It felt like it was easier to connect to people back then, and it was so much fun seeing artists getting to have fun with each other! It helped us all feel less alone Now it kinda just feels like no matter where I post, I feel like I’m just shouting into a void. It’s harder to talk to people and form friendships, and even places like discord servers feel very shallow (despite the point is to connect and to be part of a community). Social media doesn’t feel all that “social” anymore,and it kinda stinks

    This video made me realize I made art always catered slightly towards what my online friends would like. If I didn't i didn't bother to share it bc it was "Cringe" or "Not good enough" It lowkey felt like I was always catering to a private audience and the audience didn't even know they were being catered to! It's not their fault that I tend to do this but thanks for making this video. Made me think a bit harder than my one brain cell normally let's me lol

    Well, there are too many people who want to be seen as an artist but don't put the work into learning skill. They trace, copy, AI their way into your social media feed and pollute the work of real passionate artists. At least you are creating your own style, not hook up with anime like all the other grifters.

  • @Matheus-gc5fn

    I understand your convention point, but there are diferences that makes your argument flawed. On one side, you have a *concept* that you have to spend money on to *make your own work* to make an art piece on or buy one which is just a fancier comission. On the other hand, in a convention you are paying to *stay at a place* where events and people whit same or similar interests that you have. It's like a point that sera's things made about exclusivity on the same topic. She said "concerts are exclusive. Should we stop conserts?" But in which case might have been even worst because in a concert you're paying to see someone's work. Something that you put *efford* in to make yourself. I don't think that anyone should have the right to make people pay for a concept.

    I've been sharing art online for 20+ years, and in the older days of DeviantART, yeah, it was a lot easier to find a community. I remember there being groups who made a point to mentor younger/amateur artists to help them learn and to give support and a bit of attention boost. I was mentored this way, and for little loner me, it felt amazing to be accepted and appreciated for what I made, even if it was nowhere near the skill level of those I looked up to. I haven't engaged with the site in a long time, especially now that I can't get behind their AI stance, but if the energy came back, I'd probably return, too.

    Bullshit man. I was waiting for DA but that advice was nonexistent 😭 DA is great for inspiration and meeting a plethora of different artists from different backgrounds. I love the diversity. There's no hivemind, everyone has something new to bring to the table, more traditional art and THE largest age range of artists I've ever seen. It's like Twitter for artists in the sense that it's home to all demographics. Haven't bothered with groups but they seem pretty cool, like clubs. I also highly prefer the gallery style view on DA, but the UI can be over-the-top especially with the clunky new notification windows. Regardless, I like platforms with history. The emojis are funny too lol This may have changed, but the option to prevent AI from using your art, as well as the option to BLOCK AI from your view is available to everyone. Also the option to block NSFW. I've NEVER encountered AI with these settings, nor NSFW in my feed period, even with it unblocked. Never have I understood why THAT is the main complaint.

    Artists? Social media is dead, for everyone. Its no longer a social place. Barely works for sharing. It died to corporate greed, advertisements and squeezing watch time out of the user. The way DeviantArt completely destroyed itself isn't talked about enough. In a few years they managed to turn a once great platform into an ai slop factory that would make McDonalds look like a 5 star restaurant. I'd imagine once the dumbass investors who are holding that site up by twigs move on to the next trend DeviantArt will become too costly to run with all the bandwidth and storage being eaten up by bots and might have its plug pulled entirely. Tragic yet entirely self imposed ending by alienating their core audience.

  • @angelthegamer
    @angelthegamer 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've also felt a lot more lonely on the internet as well, and it's not fun. I used to have a small audience on DeviantArt back when I was a wee teenager, which was awesome to have! But then Eclipse showed up and suddenly everyone left. Didn't helped that the A.I. inclusion double-tapped it to ensure it's death... Now, I share art to multiple sites, but no matter where I post, it's like I'm invisible... It's honestly demotivating really. I dont even really have friends in real life to begin with, so to feel invisible in real life and online just really does stuff to ya mentally. At least nowadays, I do have a close group of online friends and even a boyfriend, but it still doesn't change the fact that I feel unseen in a grander scope... It sucks too because I wanna be a game dev in my future and I have so many ideas I wanna share, but no one's around to see it... It's very hard to build an audience... My Discord server, while a fun place for my friends and I to hang in, feels like a ghost town with how no one is active or even on there to begin with. I host events on the server and share updates on the server for my various things, so it's just demotivating when I host an event and only half of my friends show up... Even my TH-cam streaming is empty. Often never a chatter in the actual chat... At this point, it's just a necessity to have my friends and boyfriend appear on stream just so I have someone to talk to... If anyone wants to check me out and what I do, simply just type in my username, angelthegamer, into Google (or hopefully any search engine) and my website will pop up featuring links to my various social medias. I draw plenty of things like Pokémon and my own original species, I mod games like Sonic Mania and Friday Night Funkin', I make comics, and I even have some smaller, albeit not the best designed, games to play or download from my site! And if you like what I do, join my Discord Server, it'd be fun to have more people there than just my friends. (I've also recently opened up art commissions again!) Heck, share your social medias in the replies, let's help each other out! Let's get a social media chain going!

    Social media itself is failing its users, the internet started dying when personal websites started dying, we no longer have cheap domains and easy hosting providers like in the early days of the internet now its specifically designed to cause users to go to the large social media platforms that have little to no customization at all for the sake of uniformity, back in the early 2000s there was websites of all types with their own unique designs and webrings to promote your friends sites but now theres nothing left

    As someone whos been on the internet for... ever... at this point. For me the true shift in thw community happened when dA changed its layout. DA was formerly the LAST remnant of what the community used to be like. A site without much of an algorithm and you got all your following notifs in your inbox (AND THEY STAYED THERE!! UNTIL YOU CLOSED THEM!!! i miss this so much... i never catch what ppl i follow post anymore bc of the shift away from this notification style its SO SAD. I feel like this style in itself would fix a lot of the problems on sites like sheezy and cara. Its also why i like toyhouse so much. Please im desperate bring back the inbox BRING IT BACK!!!!) I get some ppl like the feed style but i really dont understand why. How do you see what artists you follow post? Its a good way to find new artists but a SHITTY way to keep up with the ones you ALREADY FOLLOW... theres almost no point to follow artists anymore bc its not like youll ever see what they post anyway unless youre literally online 24/7 (which is very unhealthy... if you do this... please go outside, go to a national park, go to the movies, go hang out with friends at a local coffee shop) The inbox style helped you stay up to date with the artists you follow WHILE not having to be watching a feed 24/7 You could take a break for a week without missing anything bc itll all be there waiting for you to catch up on in your inbox!!!! I thoroughly DESPISE the switch to solely feed based, no notifications/no inbox, and i think this is the root cause of all of the other problems we have with social media. The algorithms should NOT be telling us what goes into our notifs. The FOLLOW BUTTON ahould ne what tells the site to put things in our notifications like it was before. Idk who decided that people dont want inboxes anymore but its really fucking sucked. Oh yeah and those that do have inboxes they clear your notifs when you so much as open the inbox and holy shit i hate that too!!! The old style that dA (and other sites) used to have was so much nicer. So much more control over it. Tbh keep the feed pages too bc like i said its good for discovery! But bring back inboxes. But the sites wont do that because they want us to be terminally online xD....

I created an instagram account a few weeks ago in hopes of making new art friends, maybe promoting my commissions etc, but was left with my posts gaining no traction whatsoever. One big tip people promoted for your account to gain more attention is to post consistent reels, but even that doesn’t work (at least for me). • @wellofhavoc

    very well said- i think we should all make personal goals toward rebuilding our lost communities personally, i theorize it's all a result of normies invading spaces and taking them over only to say "this wasn't that bad" while demanding more content that is exactly the same as the watered down versions of more authentic communities (furry, alt fashion, fanfiction) and the more authentic members that previously enjoyed those communities have had to scramble into hiding again like romans during the fall

  • @CrazyMechaFish
    @CrazyMechaFish 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Engagement in social media nowadays is really shitty I think. People used to write way more comments, used to share other people’s posts, used to actually press that ‘like’ button. Nowadays it’s really easy to see like posts with relatively many views but basically 0 comments and likes, I thought I was just unlucky with getting traction UNTIL I saw few people irl getting content they love on their pages, saying ‘omg I loveee it! that’s my favorite artist’ and they don’t like, share or comment anything under that post. Some of them don’t even follow their ‘favorite content creators’, they just SEARCH THEIR NICKNAME every time they want to see this person’s content. I think that’s absolutely crazy. Why did people stop engaging with content they love?

    • @CrazyMechaFish
      @CrazyMechaFish 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I kinda think that the lack of interactions is partially caused by short paced trend content that looks almost the same(because god forbid you do something different, people will literally bully you off of the internet if that ‘different’ would be too extreme for them to handle) nowadays. People get bored with this kind of content really fast and therefore don’t interact with it. Like, it’s almost all the same, and if it’s in video form it’s really short. You’ll obviously get bored really fast of seeing the same ten second video of that one trending sound but with slightly different characters over and over again until the trend dies in like a week. It’s a paradox, really. You NEED to follow trends because otherwise it’s impossible to get ANY kind of traction, but if you do follow them people usually don’t interact with it all that much because this type of content 99% of times is really boring and repetitive. You cannot win no matter what.

    • @CrazyMechaFish
      @CrazyMechaFish 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Also… old internet was much more welcoming to content of people no matter their skills, like, yeah I know people would still occasionally say that your drawings are ugly or that you don’t deserve your following, but I feel like it happens WAAAAAY more often now. Your art is slightly worse than the average? You’ll get bullied off the internet. Your art is in slightly more unique style than the average? You’ll get bullied off the internet. You try to experiment with something in your drawings(like drawing different angles or some extreme perspective) that people would praise you for like five years ago? Now you’ll get bullied off the internet because it ‘doesn’t look professional’. Internet used to be so cool because people here were all almost exactly like you. Just common folk. Television was the thing for all the ‘megasuperprofessional’ people with expensive cameras and microphones and other shit. Now you can get bullied if you don’t have the same quality as they do.

  • @salt187
    @salt187 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Being on social media as an artist is so weird nowadays. I last used to post my art when I was about 13-14. I stopped because I noticed I didn't have time to post a lot and didn't want social media pressure to affect my relationship to my passion. As surreal as it feels to say, I'm now turning 20 next month and having recently gathered the courage thanks to my lovely supportive friends, I finally rejoined social media, only to return to a complete wasteland. It's really bizarre, posting work that I've only decided to share because of the overwhelming support I received in irl showcasings only to receive less than 50 likes on it at best. I know that my work is great. I know it's not my skill that is lacking, but I can't help but feel the same sense of "'not being good enough" to receive the attention I know my hard work deserves, just like many other artists do. I'm trying to simply keep at it, follow trends and whatever recent fad offers exposure. I have to honestly say I don't find any joy in posting my work save for when I receive some actual interactions, anything tangible that let's me know someone saw and liked my work. I'll simply tough it out until I get lucky and get noticed someday, given I'm trying to establish a brand and name for myself at some point. Overall, I really wish I hadn't joined at such an unfortunate time TT

    I'm planning on starting up some accounts to post my art on soon, and this made me wish I could start them in that golden Era. I do plan on doing it more for fun then for success, though, so I suppose in a way I'm bringing a part of the old vibe, even if it might result in a small audience at best. Love your videos btw! (I was also jumpscared by your voice a bit before I remembered it just changes like that lol)

    People were always getting called out for things or being shit talked about on the internet (i saw what yall posted on ED...). I feel like back then in the early DA days your average person wasnt expected to post professionally produced high quality art vids too.

    I always find this topic so fascinating to listen to when it comes from the perspective of people who first got their social media art start in the 2010s though i suppose in your case, the mid 2010s? (When you said that you were 10-12 watching art content on TH-cam, I laughed because when I was around that age, this stuff wasn't even a thing yet lol) Nonetheless I listen and it makes me feel ancient because I've been posting art since 2005 and the social media art world was even more vastly different in the 2000s than it was even in the 2010s. For context, I'm in my early 30s so I know, a tad older but still, it just wows me where things have went in the last 20 +years and I must admit, it didn't go for the better and became much more inorganic. I still remember when DeviantART was the main place to be for any artist back in the 2000s and how it really did feel like a community where you could share your work and it was all on a level playing field because there were no algorithms back then. Also people just seemed more open to talk and just nerd out over their interests. Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't completely easy to get your work noticed but compared to nowadays? Oh hell yeah, it was a lot easier because DeviantART again, had no algorithms and the groups feature & forum was a great way to get your stuff noticed though it's no surprise that most artists who did get popular in the later 2000s started out as fan art artists but again, back then it felt like people were communal back then so if you really liked the artists' art style and/or personality, it made it easy to want to see their original work. I think things started to go a bit downhill around 2009 and into the early 2010s when Tumblr first came out because unlike DeviantART, Tumblr had a much more streamlined commenting system and it was geared more towards instant gratification through emphasizing "likes" and reposts" versus actual comments like DeviantART would encourage. But DeviantART was still relatively active at this time so it wasn't too bad. But this problem got much worse as newer social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter came up in popularity and followed the blueprint of Tumblr which was more about instant gratification and speed along with the newly implemented algorithm that really changed the nature of the art social media landscape. And then DeviantART shot itself in the foot but forcefully implementing Eclipse that was so clunky in it's early years and it drove away a lot more artists who still were on there. And then the inclusion of AI art which sadly, AI art has engulfed the website completely and AI "art" is the biggest example of inorganic because since the people aren't actually drawing, they have no emotional relation to the images and it's why they can fart so many of them out and it all feels so lifeless. I still use DeviantART as there are still some actual artists there and surprisingly, it's the one place where my art still gets decent views and notice compared to Tumblr, Twitter, and BlueSky. And I think because I've been an active member on the site for decades, my home feed isn't completely engulfed in AI art but when I try searching for new stuff, that's when I notice the bundles of AI art everywhere. Anyway, the main culprit behind why the social media world feels a bit more hollow now than it did a decade and two ago was when instant gratification took over. Another thing I think plays a part in this feeling is commercialism. What I mean by this is younger artists (who are still in high school and even middle school) trying to get into commission work. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's wrong to try to make money through your art but I can't help but feel like trying to sell and push commissions when you're like a sophomore in high school also kinda plays a part in a refusal to just you know, vibe with the atmosphere. When I was in high scool during the 2000s, the only people doing commissions were people out of high school and in college or older and I feel like this contributed to the chill vibes that were all over DeviantART (and FurAffinity for furry artists) where people around your age were open to just vibing and chatting with you while gushing over art and fandoms. But with hustle culture, you just don't have all that much time to do that and this is why I think atmosphere for younger artists now feels so lonely. Also yes, attention spans have been so shortened in the landscape of quick-paced content. TikTok is the worst example of this and I think that's why a lot of people are developing shorter attention spans. You can't learn or think much when you watch very short vids that continue to play killing your attention and focus. But despite all this, I think what can help is just continue to try and connect with other artists and eventually you'll find some you vibe with.

    Social media was never meant for artists. Artists just managed to adapt to an algorythm that was made with growth, advertising and extremely short form post and interactions in mind.

    I dont know.. these days i just feel like all platforms are just shunning artists. If you cant post 3 or 4 times per week + short form content you just get kind of blacklisted. 2 years ago i would reach 400/ my 500 followers on instagram and get 200 or so likes and 20 coments, now i cant even reach 100 out of my 800 followers, not to mention instagram banning you for "gore" when you have not even drawn that... This is my personal experience, DA is contraversial but i have found great sucsess with people actually interacting

    I personally feel like I have nver really found my place on here to be as an artist. Which is kinda sad. I just feel every possible social is just going down hill in one way or another. (yes that includes sides like artfool and cara)
