i think my hottest take vis-a-vis commissions, scamming etc is that you should never spend the money before you're done with the commission -- that way, you're never without money to refund someone in case you can't finish it. despite the risk, that's why i always like to have a half-upfront and half-after payment style available during the very rare times i actually take comms :P

      @Qwizz  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

for me it's the same where I don't touch the money until I finish the commission, and that's a great practice, but it's not always viable for someone who is a full-time artist; if they need to pay bills/pay for food right there and then, it's not always realistic for them to not spend the money until they finish the comm! But if you want to be a fulltime artist I think you should assure to yourself that you're in a position where you very infrequently need to cancel / refund comms. if you're a fulltime artist who consistently finds yourself in a position where you have to cancel and refund commissions, that's kind of a problem

@@Qwizz totally agree -- i think a lot of people lose motivation once they 'already have the money' and see commissions as repaying debt, almost, instead of earning the money in the first place. lots of issues i see with commission practices are honestly baffling in that i feel there's easy processes to mitigate the (repeated) issues lmfao

Im a disabled stay at home mom and i found it helpful that to balance my art commission life w my home life, is that i have drawing sessions w my children. So we all sit together and listen to music while we all draw (they draw for fun while im working on a commission) so i dont have to choose who will get my time in expense of making more income :)

One thing that I definitely recommend is to limit the amount of commissions an artist accepts, for example on a monthly basis. That's what I do. Helps with both organization, and can boost desirability of the artists work!

I hate being too nice in commissions, one of my first actual paying clients ghosted me, threatened to sue me for "harassment" when I told the jerk to pay up, called me the n word hard r MULTIPLE TIMES despite being white, and then said "my dad's a laywer"
It was just 1 dollar he had to pay me for a fully rendered art piece :/ idek if I'm ok sharing this😭

scamming in the art community is everywhere and you gotta be careful on who you commission or whatever
also love the new character art/stills. and the video in general!

Showing progress is a good one, it can give you're client an idea of how far you are on the piece, and can show proof you're doing that said art,
be careful for scammers and thieves however, like put a watermark on the progress or something like that.

I had to decline a client because I was in the middle of moving and I was going to see family, so i told them itd possibly be a month as i hadnt had a lot of sit down time to draw
(Most times i can make a drawing in at max a week in a half, minimum about a day, rare to finish in a day tho)
They tried to pressure me to do the commission in 2 weeks without paying half up front first so i ended up having to decline
(I was clear with the fact i was moving and that i was busy, but since they kept making excuses on why they couldnt pay me so i could start i rejected the commission)

the real problem with artists having sudden health issues / emergency's isn't the things coming up, but that scammers will lie about that until clients get fed up and take the loss. Like if 20 people buy a $10 commission, half get chargebacks, the other half take the loss, that's $100 made for the scammer. and clients have no way of telling, all they can do is assume the artist is being honest.

I am a disabled artist who takes coms. Without going into detail about my disability, I find it very hard to sit for long periods of times so my commissions do end up taking a while. I have it stated in my TOS that my turn around times are unpredictable because of this! I haven't had a problem with people thinking I'm scamming them because I've stated this and I also reiterate that when I first accept the commission. Another way I've found it to be helpful is by taking payment in halves so that way if something does end up happening and the customer does want a refund due to my inability to finish it, I can give them that happily! TLDR I agree with your messages and just...be honest and upfront with your clients. You can do so without airing every medical detail out as well if you're like me and want to be a bit more private.

Omg I’m 13 and took my first commission months ago, I said it would take like 2-3 weeks and it was a bodysheet 😭 since I’ve dabbled in gacha and know how to make gacha body sheets I thought I was perfectly capable but newsflash, drawing over an existing gacha base and completely making your own from scratch is VERY different. Long story short 2+ months later I got the dreaded text and I was stressed out lmao. Anyways I ended up sending them the work I had done (most of th body sheet except the extra hands and expressions I promised) and I offered to refund them. They said they didn’t need a refund and were SUPER nice about it thank god. (The comm was like 5 dollars btw 💀) I learned a lot of things lol…..

It's kinda fascinating that in creative hobbies/jobs your work can be impossible to do once your mental health hits the fan. When you work the typical crap 9-5 job and your mental health is in the gutters you still go in mindlessly and do it mindlessly suffering the whole time. But with art you could be unable to actually draw anything for weeks or even months if your mental health is screwed because you can't be mindless when trying to create something in most cases.
It's just interesting that art in and of itself suffers the most from mental blockages or stress in comparison to majority of other jobs.
But in terms of problems like this you have 2 choices, keep the client up to date and if it goes on too long then just refund them or just refund them immediately and stop taking commissions for a few days or take a week off. There's not much else you can do besides refunding or getting the work done. That's the only 2 responsible options when dealing with someone elses money.

Edit: Me and Shimo talked it out and I misunderstood her/their point even if harsh. I'm sorry Qwizz for freaking out and putting you in this. Other than that, I've been critical of what I plan for my art. I hope you don't mind venting my experience, I'm learning to get on a better mindset now.
Hey Qwizz, I commented on ShimoBits' video where she won't give unwell artists the benefit of the doubt when artists guggle between commisions and other things when were stressed. I really felt gulity when I got social anxiety and refused to give my commisioner their second commission with DA points (not real money) just because of my severe anxiety at 18. I was guggling online school and ych commissions at the time on my old DA. My mom won't let me do online art commissions because of this. My mental wellbeing isn't an excuse but a huge reason for everything I do. I got upset and disagree with ShimoBits.
