my problem is that I see an artstyle and it immediately resonates with me
It's EXACTLY what I want my art to look like- but I get mixed answers from people on whether or not I can copy the artstyle of any varying degree

I personally would ask first, it depends on how comfortable they are with it

i get this, it's hard not to feel that way and impulsively want to match the style of an artist whom you really adore or look up to.
before intentionally changing anything, i would say try looking inward and consider, "do i appreciate this ART STYLE and think it would fit ME or do i just appreciate the SKILL of this artist and admire how they stylize their art?"
i made a video where i talked about 'art style theft' (not trying to plug myself bahah just saying therell be more elaboration from me there) but technically mimicking an art style to a certain degree is alright. HOWEVER! im just going to leave this here.
i dont think its the best way to improve or grow as an artist and i dont think youll long term connect with a style you copied from someone else. a style that was developed more with independent study is more likely to be unique and will probably match your individual taste more. i dont recommend finding your concrete style by copying another person. it's honestly rather confining for you in the long run and crafting your art style on your own through your individual brainstorming and ideas is a better way to improve your actual artistic skill.

@@Qwizz You’re right, and I watched the video! And it truly does fit me I’d say- but I don’t plan on sticking to it strictly if I try to emulate it in any way. Because it’s cartoony-realism sorta? I’d also want to learn realism and SUPER cartoony. I think what I mean is that I wanna do everything! But if I’m going to be doing semi-realism, it’s gonna be the artstyle I’m thinkin of rn. It just sounds super wrong to talk about using an artstyle for some reason but I hope it makes sense

I for sure recommend playing around with styles!! My style changes a lot, and if you've seen my work you'd know that, play around with brushes, shading styles, even canvas sizes, your style doesn't have to be one set thing and you can change it! Eventually you'll find how you draw, and you'll enjoy it! Just keep sticking to that!
also thank you for putting my art of the penelope and dante lore in the end LMFAO

for me, i switch art styles depending on _what_ exactly i'm drawing. drawing a character with a more gothic look? go for a gothic art style. drawing a character with a more soft look? go for a more soft art style. if you looked at my art, this would probably be pretty clear pretty quickly. so yeah, mine just varies a ton, depending on context. :)

    Nice put together video.
Simple fact of the matter is artstyle dose change/drift over time and it aint a bad thing. Mine had adjusted over the years. One of my favorite things about keeping all my sketchbooks and old posts up is that i can see how it's changed. After 8ish years, small little changes can add up to alot.

Been at this for 25 or so years. I personally describe "style" as "the imperfections any single artist makes while trying to copy another artist"
"Style" is short for Stylus, or Stylo. French for "pen". As in, the thing you hold. Your pen isn't going to get you there.
YOUR SKILL is what is going to get you there.
Do you want to know how to get that skill?
    PRACTICE,
Artists don't "change" their "style". It grows with them. It's influenced by their inspirations and where their life takes them.
Have you pressed "read more" yet? You probably have, good.
Do you want to know the real secret? The secret that animators, like the ones at Disney and Sullivan Bluth have been doing for years?
Put on some training wheels and TRACE.
Yeah, just trace. Find your favorite artist and trace ever every single thing you like from them.
DONT STEAL THEIR ART. DO NOT STEAL. DONT DO THAT, DONT STEAL
Study the strokes you make to recreate what they have. Do your best to mimic their line work.
Try to sketch over their figures to learn the construction an shape of everything.
    Be Spongebob drawing a circle.
Do that so much until you're confident in taking the training wheels off and freehanding your own original ideas.
You'll find out that this brute force method will be the quickest way to learning a style.
It's what artists do in the industry to keep animation consistent for every frame and every scene.
If it's okay for them, it's okay for you.
JUST DONT STEAL. THIS IS FOR LEARNING ONLY. DON"T STEAL.

So basically, I should sketch on top of the artists work to understand how exactly they make their bodies and accessories? Sounds interesting!
