Episode 3 1979 Toyota pickup Foamie Camper
I'm finally getting around to watching the rest of Jake's camper build videos, and I'm really impressed with the construction techniques and ideas he's using. The only slightly dubious build decision so far is the combination of "Small internal space", "Constructed from sheets of insulation", and "8KW DIESEL HEATER !!!". What I'm seeing is essentially the specifications for an oven. I know a guy who uses one of these 8kw units to heat his double garage home workshop. It's not particularly well insulated, but even so, he told me even in the colder months the heater is still only running for a couple of 10 to 15 minutes blasts out of every hour. In such a small space as this camper body, that heater could be starting and stopping almost constantly (or dry roasting you), and the start ups can be pretty smoky until they get warm. They kind of rely on getting up to temperature for a bit to burn off all the oily soot that starting up causes. I read somewhere that you can get into a hidden configuration menu on most of these to tweak them and get higher outputs, so maybe it's also possible to dial them back for less aggressive heating and better economy too? It'll be interested to see if this turns into a problem in later the videos when you start camping in it.
What's the white stuff? Looks like plaster
What type of epoxy did you use? Also what type of filler was used?
Very cool idea! I had never thought of using that kind of material! I'm wanting to build a pop up roof on my 2003 Ford Excursion. Any advice would be greatly appricated?
Enjoying being a fly on the shop wall. What weather stripping product did you use on the door seal?
I just want to know how does good dose it hold up if u drill anythingto it like a cabinet
Great video, great build! Also, kudos on being literally the only TH-camr in the world with decent music :) Can I ask, why 3 layers of cloth? Wouldn't one (like a 7.5oz) be sufficient? **edit** I saw from another comment you used the extra layers for durability - cool! As an alternate (maybe you did this and I didn't notice), how about putting down one (or two) layers of cloth and then wetting out a couple more times? For boat building, they tend to wet out the cloth once to affix it, and then two more to fill the weave entirely, sanding back down any excess when they're done. That much epoxy I feel like should be pretty durable! (resin is about half the strength of the fiberglass:resin composite)
I'm ready for a new build series
What is "peel ply" ?
Wow that a factory look! Amazing prep & paint work my friend A+
This guy sounds like ray ramone Very nice work
How do you attach to truck?
Did it hurt mpg? Can You still run 80miles?
Do you think you could've gotten away with wood glue and canvas for the interior? It's much easier to apply since the wood glue is tackier
Loving it!
Love your build
come on jake you can do 4k
So, you doing anything these days?
What grit sand paper you like?
I use 80 grit for pretty much all the foam shaping and bonding prep.
Awesome work
Thank you!
Great design and craftsmanship. Awesome to see someone building a foamie and doing radii everywhere.
Glad you like it!
Amazing paint work. I'm going to re-watch this video a few more time before I paint my skoolie.
Where are you? Miss yiur great videos, cooler? Cheers
Im not dead yet! On the tail end of a big project for my real job. Hoping to dive back in to the videos soon!
@@ThatJakeWorldWide good to know your still kicking👍
Way to.much hardner
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.
Why do you care for pinholes?
Pinholes are an undesirable surface condition, and will show through the final paintwork.
Sick build series dude! Got a question for ya, what glass are you using and do you need to prep/sand the xps before glassing. I started my build with 1x1 framing, 5mm plywood veneer xps core glassed over with 1708 and the weight is starting to add up. I’m thinking of sticking to pure foam and glass for the walls roof.
Thanks! I give the xps a quick sand with 80 grit prior to glassing. I used several different weave types throughout the construction. Mostly whatever open weave 6-8 oz cloth that was on sale or cheap through thayercraft.
@@ThatJakeWorldWide awesome! Thanks for getting back to me
Shity music
Your voice sounds Like Raymond 👍 you remember the TV show Everybody loves Raymond lol Him 😆
Thank you!!
great job brother
Cool👍 what fiberglass mat did you use for lamination? and how many layers overlapped?
I used several different weave types throughout the construction. Mostly whatever open weave 6-8 oz cloth that was on sale or cheap through thayercraft. 3 plies everywhere.
Amazing work and job!!! Well done!
whats the white stuff being put down before the fiber glass around the 11 minute mark?
Epoxy thickened with glass micro balloons
Question, do you think the foamy is strong enough to support you walking on the roof? If not how would you recommend some build a foamy that can support say 2 adult people on the roof?
Easy. I can jump up and down on the roof of this build. The thicker the core the more stiff the finished part is too. A 3" or 4" foam core is exponentially stiffer than the 2" used here.
@@ThatJakeWorldWide Sweet! Thank you so much!
Easy Off Oven Cleaner!! The ultimate degreaser
Oven cleaner does work well! I like the cheap stuff from the (previously) dollar store. I used the pressure washer plumbed to the hot water for this stuff.
There's some seriously good crafting going on here combined with some pretty serious "dorkage" anyway thanks for making the video I enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching!
Don’t mind me. Just binge watching.
Not many people know this. Most food poisoning comes from Spinach and strawberries, and cooked meat. I’ve been eating ALL the meats Raw for over 10 years. Not even a tinge of a problem. And it all started with raw milk & sashimi. You can TH-cam it. Your meal looks tasty, just had to comment after hearing when you said the ol myth about raw chicken and need for good washing and high heat. Ofc, I also by from the best local grass feeding farmer I’ve ever met.
A little pink in your chicken is fine! Although I much prefer a nice rare steak. I agree on sourcing quality local food, so many people have no idea where or how the food on their plate gets to them.
@@ThatJakeWorldWide I was most fearful of trying eggs and chicken raw. I finally harvested a rooster for my farmer friend. And determined to go for it. It was refreshing like sashimi Salmon & Tuna. Also, Yellow Jackets some how can smell the raw (breast) flesh and will sit on your hand with the meat and cut little (melon balls) with their sharp-scooping mouths and fly off with it. It’s an absolute trip. Try it some time, holding a raw chicken while sitting outside. I’m a skeptic of modernity. Also appreciate too. Double edged sword. Thanks for the reply.
That camper doesn’t even droop the rear in the slightest! So many rigs supplement their suspensions due to heft.
Nice Scare at the end. I started your build watching with the first Glassing layer on the Floor of camper Vid. Nice to “catch it in progress” instead of seeing it complete, that way it’s more suspenseful, exciting. I appreciate your relaxed lightheartedness and intense care all simultaneously. How many layers of glass did you end up with on average? Funny how this started. I put in search-bar “Converting small trailer beds into campers”. I found Foamies tear-drop channels and BOOM! saw your CAMPER on older model pick up. That was enough for me to switch up interest. I use to have an ‘88 Red Nissan pickup reg. Cab 4 cylinder manual. The absolute best most relaxed fun ride memories ever I think I was 19 when I got her. In 1994. Huge modern vehicles are just too much complication. Keep on keeping on!
Thanks for watching! The camper ended up being 3 layers inside and out for around 20oz total per side. It's funny how these things start, I too saw some other foamie stuff online and was hooked.
@@ThatJakeWorldWide Nice!
Mind me asking what you are using to fill in your imperfections? I hear you saying "Micro" but unsure what that is exactly.
Glass balloons / or microspheres mixed with epoxy to the desired consistency. Hence the "Micro" slang, common in composite construction of boats and aircraft.
Very professional.. You must really enjoy your work.
I do! Thanks for watching!
Have the same truck and engine you didn't have to use any block off plates I'm finding extra ports where my manifold came off as well as that tube inside the heatsheild I can't seem to find out what it's called or what to do with it.
The new header flange serves as the block off for the egr ports on the head.
What did you use, since no plywood, to skin the foam to have the window lip? Also, what bonding glue/paste is that….and last what did you use to make the “fillet” paste for the corners? Looks great…especially will all those ugly raptor liner builds out there!!!
The window lip is all fiberglass. Its covered in one o the other build videos. The "paste" is epoxy thickened with glass balloons, available through any composites supplier. I use us composites.
Awesome job thinking of doing this for my 89 ford ranger
Great videos! I think Foam Fusion glue is the way to go to adhere the wood to the foam and gluing the foam pieces together
I have seen guys use foam fusion with good success. Epoxy worked great for me.
How has that Duplicolor held up for ya? I’m going to paint my engine while I have it out.
That Duplicolor engine enamel is awesome stuff. Easily the best rattle can paint that I've ever used.
be aggressive. "b" "e" aggressive.
Nice video, I need to do the same to my 1980 2wd 5sp. What is that long tube header that you used? A lot of sites say long tubes don’t fit 79-80 2wd’s, but it looks like yours fit no problem!
Thanks dude! The header Is a Flowtech "shortie" Part #19000FLT I wouldn't call it a true long tube, but a huge improvement over a leaking oem cast manifold. It looks a lot like the offerings from LCE at about 1/4 the cost. Priorities ya' know?
@@ThatJakeWorldWide I hear ya, all my builds are budget builds! I'll look into that Flowtech header. I already have a weber, so now I can do away with the rest of the egr junk with the new header.
