  • Wood Turning Holly has been my nemesis for years but over that time I have come up with some creative ways of filling cracks.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.
    Shay.

One of my club mates swears by boiling rough turned blanks before drying them. He has a high success rate with cherry, which cracks like mad.

That does indeed work Archie, it works the same way as keeping the humidity high for the first week in a kiln, it replaces the sap with water which is much easier to get out.

Would sanding and sealing the outside before you move to the inside help strengthen the outer part of the bowl? Just a question you may have already tried. I’m still pretty green at 3 years almost turning. I have a lot more to learn.

That would be my normal way of doing it Clyde, I am just cursed with holly. One of these days I will turn a large holly bowl with no cracks.
