2011 Seat Leon 1.6 TDi Clutch Master And Slave Cylinder Replacement - VAG Volkswagen Golf Audi Skoda
We're back with another car repair video. This time we're taking a look at a 2011 Seat Leon MK2 clutch pedal that had dropped to the floor and won't come back up, requiring the owner to have the car towed home. A small puddle below the drivers' area bulkhead points to a failed clutch master cylinder, but because the job was a bit of a pain and I end up with problems getting the hydraulic system bled, I end up replacing the slave cylinder too. Also check out my short drive back, driving the car with the clutch permanently engaged, using the starter to set off.
This video took some editing and somehow ended up being over 12GB--is that normal for a 1 hour 30 min 1080p HD video or is it my software not good at compiling it? Anyway, I appreciate the view and please SUBSCRIBE if anything I upload helps or entertains you. Thanks for watching!

    You do it when the oil is cold or hot ? Also, the 1st gear is sometimes difficult to pass at green light, since new. Same happens with reverse gear

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It was hot (or at least was driven within a couple of hours) when I did it, although I don't think it matters too much as it'll be negligible on how much oil will stick to the bottom of the case or is still coating the gears.. Thanks! It sounds like a common issue that we'll have to just live with.

      @@Kamui.. Yes, the viscosity doesn't change, however the metal components expand, so you'd still normally do lubricant changes at operating temperature. Modern oils tend to have additives that will make it cling to components when they're cold (in order to prevent wear on start-up).

    In your previous video the octane number was 93 and now it's 100. In your opinion, what is the root to this difference?

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm 90% sure Esso's additives package for their "Supreme 99" was formulated for a national expectation for 2-3% ethanol (which in itself is an octane booster). So the areas that didn't have ethanol in fell quite short of the 99RON it should have been. However I've more recently retested the areas that were 93RON and they too show consistent 100+ octane.

      So it only grinds during the engine running and when you're driving, but not if the engine is idling and the grinding is a constant pitch no matter how fast the vehicle is travelling or engine is revving. Normally grinds are brake, wheel bearing, drive shaft related but they'll change pitch and get faster/louder as you travel or clutch release bearing, but you'll hear that at idle more than anything. A constant pitch would be from something that moves at roughly the same speed regardless of the car's/van's movement so could be fuel or injector pumps, heater fan, electric radiator fan. Have you tried to hear if it's coming from the engine bay or rear of the vehicle?

    • @boilerhousegarage

      @@Bengarl That's almost certainly a clutch throw-out bearing, also called release or thrust bearing. It would effectively mean having a full clutch kit replacement, as the work involved to take the bell housing off and replace the bearing, you may as well have a new clutch cover and plate too. However it will at least still function for ages and just be noisy, so you don't need to get it done with any urgency if the clutch itself is still engaging.

      I think it's an MOT fail from a certain year of car, so you might not have any choice eventually. However, I personally wouldn't bother as it's an unnecessary expense and we managed for a century checking our own pressures manually; it's not like it's harming the car. What car is it? Are you sure it uses batteries in the valves as some earlier systems used the ABS to measure it? At least wait until you need new tyres anyway. They tend to replace the whole TPMS valve and have to be calibrated with a special handheld machine.

    6% ethanol increases your fuel consumption by about 1.7% compared to no ethanol. So the only reason for VPower to get such better mpg assuming absolutely identical driving is if either the engine is set for high octane fuel and it has to retard ignition timing for 95 Ron. Or it can actually advance the ignition timing with the high octane fuel. The difference here is impossible to be the Ethanol alone.

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheDude50447 Nope, that's not true at all. Ethanol has less than half the calorific value of petrol, so logically, 6% will increase fuel consumption by at least 3% (and usually more due to several other factors), else where does the energy come from with such a deficit? Further real-world tests I've conducted on blends up to 85% ethanol, concluded with ethanol only providing a third of the mileage achievable from petrol with zero ethanol. In general terms, E6 will increase fuel consumption by around 9%, which is consistent with the results I show at the end of this playlist using 0%, 5%, 6% and 7%. When governments and fuel companies advertise the ethanol will only make a small difference, they're lying-which shouldn't be surprising.

    • @TheDude50447
      @TheDude50447 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@boilerhousegarage Ive watched several videos on that and youre the only one with those numbers. Every other channel like "Engineering explained" or just websites on the topic say that Ethanol got 67% of the energy content of regular petrol. Being interested in the topic myself and E10 fuel being available since 2011 here in germany Ive driven hundreds of thousands of kilometres with tanks full of E5 and E10 which have both been available side by side. The difference is so minimal that neither the board computer nor me at the pump can actually make out any difference that isnt within margin of error due to traffic jams and so on. Same goes for similiar tests Ive seen on german channels like asphalt art which do hypermiling and long range fuel economy testing. In their tests the Aral Ultimate 102 fuel actually achieved worse mileage over their long range testing in cases compared to regular E5 in cases. Ive used Aral Ultimate myself a few times and also havent noticed any difference. Im absolutely certain that there is something else going on there. A quick google search on the Fiesta ST says that the engine is actually setup for 98 Ron or premium/Super plus fuel. Its highly likely that your engine retards the ignition timing for Ron 95 E10 leading to significantly worse thermal efficiency than what it is setup for. Im pretty much certain about that.

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheDude50447 The difference is minimal because E5 and E10 is just a label to mean "up to." It doesn't necessarily mean the fuel is 5 or 10% respectively. Again, the difference in minimal on my tests also between E5 and E10 as they're 5-7% and I'm sure even 10% will not be massively different. Yes, the octane potential in the ethanol free may have made the ST more efficient. I should perhaps do a mileage test on 99 Octane E2.5 to confirm the timing is making significant difference in efficiency, but my other tests have been on a flex fuel car, getting 11mpg on E85 85%, 30mpg on "E10" 5% and 35mpg on "E5" 0%. I don't care what skinny, EV wanker Engineering Explained has to say, petrol has 10200kcal/gram and bioethanol had 5000kcal/gram (10.29303/jppipa.v9i9.4716) I do not commit the begging-the-question fallacy by accepting data from biased sources as fact. Yes, the NHS gets it right half the time, but needs to be over 99% of the time given the literal life-and-death nature of healthcare. Many people find themselves in a postcode lottery of whether they get urgent treatment or not.

    Tip for anyone watching this -when you tighten the tensioner you need to hold the tensioner still with a hex key, known issue on these being overtightened as the tensioner moves when tightening the bolt, causing bearing or belt failure, dayco / gates etc have field bulletins on this. Even only a couple or so degrees movement (hardly anything) raises the load on the belt exponentially, from around 20kg to over 60kg

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct. This is why I mention it at 22:45 and show the allen key in place (although it's hard to see) along with the ratchet. Unfortunately I couldn't hold the allen key, tighten the tensioner bolt and film with my phone all at the same time. Once it's tightened down hard by hand, you can torque it up without much risk of it moving, unless of course you made a feeble effort of tightening by hand, in which case you also won't be able to hold the allen key "in place" either.

    am i the only one, but i thing you're mistaken in the engine code. the isuzu engine is used in opel's and chevrolet's and is a 1.7 CDTI not CTDI. this is a proper honda engine ! also its derived from the 2.2l i-CTDI engine from the following civic generation and accord.

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I was only mistaken on referring to the "badge" on them as CDTi, when it's a CTDi on all Hondas including this Civic and the later models, which is where I've probably confused you. The engine itself is referred to as the 4EE2. Bar a few plastic ancilleries, this is an identical engine to the Vauxhall Opel 1.7 diesels of the same era and is 100% of Isuzu design and parts are stamped with Isuzu, service and replacement part all cross-reference part numbers and pictures of engines compare. If you check out the cambelt video I done on it, it's also marked Isuzu. It's an excellent engine, but noisy, old fashioned and definitely not a Honda, who released theirs in around 2005/6.

      Remember though, "E10" is actually E5-E7 really and most "E5" is ethanol free or around 2% in some areas. It's certainly worth trying a couple of tanks of various brands to see what suits your car, and you may even find the expensive stuff gives you better mpg.

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Never mind that, where's this ganja at? 😄 I'd be first looking for water ingress which you can find in the fuel filter housing (water will go to the bottom with diesel sat on top) so you'll be looking in that area anyway to see if something is clogging the filter or any part of the system. Do you run the tank low much, or notice it happen less if on a full tank or more if you're coming off a roundabout? It could be a loss of fuel pressure if the pump is on its way out, but should really outlive the van unless its done exceptional mileage. A couple of tanks of Shell V-Power diesel and an additive called dipetane wouldn't go amiss if perhaps the fuel system is clogged somewhere else.

      @cannabisfarmoutdooruk4729 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@boilerhousegarage I was under quarter tank when it was happening and just filled up and it’s not happening now so you think pump or water in filter? Thanks mate

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cannabisfarmoutdooruk4729 It won't be the filter/housing in that case. It could be your pump, or at least it could get damaged if you run the tank too low. Chances are your fuel tank is contaminated with water, sludge or I've even seen petrol (where someone has mis-fuelled in the past) as it will sit on the bottom of a diesel tank. All diesels and fuel injection tanks are pressurised or use a swirl pot, so keeping the tank as full as possible will mean you're effectively diluting the contaminant, so try not to let it fall below a 1/3 tank. You can get it drained and cleaned out, but as it's a messy job and the fuel will be classed as hazardous waste, it won't be cheap. There's no fuel drain on these tanks and you can't syphon it (I've attempted both) so won't be a home job unfortunately. As long as you keep the tank topped up full, you can still use it; it's just annoying to keep having to fill up every 200 miles or so.

    If i were to use this to measure gasoline with a small amount of ethinol, even though my readings may not be accurate, i should be able to tell if one gas is better than another, correct?

    • @boilerhousegarage
      @boilerhousegarage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With just the gas "as is" then sadly not, as even 2% ethanol will just give the maximum (false) reading. However as I've done in the past, you can extract the ethanol from both fuel samples, then test it to see which of the two might have better octane boosting additives made from a petroleum distillate, such as Shell V-Power, which contains considerably more than even top rival brands.

    • @vh14a

      So I live in USA. I extracted 8% ethanol from 94 octane, and the meter read 82 ot 2 different samples from two different sunoco stations. 12 octane seems to be a lot for 8% ethanol. Also, I tested c16 race gas, which should be 116 octane, but the meter reads 84. Any thoughts?
