Sailing to a Freshwater Spring, then on to Ambon.
We sail our Amel Super Maramu, Jaygo, along the North of Seram (Maluku) to a rarely visited Freshwater Spring (Air Putri). Then we continue through a notoriously rough & tight pass on our way to Ambon City. We get some really great sailing conditions along the way. Dee also deals with our Visa issues while we sail!

In this weeks Sailing video, we visit Pulau Air. This is part of the "Seven Islands" group on the North side of Seram Island, Indonesia. This is the type of place we seek out when we are cruising. There are no residents on these stunning islands & mostly it is only fishermen, or hard-core local tourists that come here. We get boarded by a wonderful group of Indonesian tourists who were curious ...

Sailing back to Sorong, Indonesia for another attempt to sort out our Water-Maker. As we leave, we are hailed & boarded by Indonesian Customs Patrol doing their routine inspections. We then sail on to Misool to find an anchorage for the night. Rob goes up the mast to check for possible "dodgy" spreader bolts. We end up in a lovely piece of paradise in West Misool, Raja Ampat.

      @johnwong3935 Ha ha?? Pretty simple John. I obviously caught it in Port Vila when we went out for dinner the night before departure. Dee then caught it from me, despite her best efforts to avoid doing so. I wonder if you would pose that “question” in the same way if you were standing in front of me having a conversation? Anyway, I hope that answers your question. Rob.

    Hi, by the end of video, could you pls tell me if you guys rented that red/white wood boat motor at a village? Locals will do that to me ?

    • @sailingjaygo
      @sailingjaygo 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @CachorroAventura Hey Cachorro. Great question. No, we didn’t rent the boat. It was owned by the local chief that we befriended and the outboard motor had been swamped. I fixed the motor for him & got it going again. However, many of these villages have very limited means of earning money & some probably would rent you one of their boats if you asked them. You would probably have to bring 2 stroke fuel with you as it is in very limited supply in some of those more remote villages.

      @CachorroAventura One more thing I just thought of. If you are trying to rent a boat, I would recommend renting the boat WITH a local skipper. They have an intimate knowledge of their local area for the best fishing, diving, snorkeling, reefs etc. Good luck.

      @sailingjaygo 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @dr.gotzstegmuller7453 Hey Doc, the Volvo most certainly could have been overhauled & I did get a quote on doing such. It had a multitude of small issues that were manageable but overall it was very tired & the final trigger was oil in the coolant. We sold the engine as it was still running ok (was very transparent with the buyer). Also, we are spending a great deal of time in Indonesia & remote SE Asia where we absolutely must be self sufficient with a totally reliable engine. The new Yanmar has transformed the boat. Jaygo is SM#224, so pretty close to yours. Sing out if you need any info on the repower.

    I was wondering what you thought "wasn't quite right" about your water maker. There's the ideal state to get your membrane in but they work even when they haven't been wet or our "expired".

    • @sailingjaygo
      @sailingjaygo 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @allrockfarmllc9909 I think the problem may be poor quality control from the manufacturer. They cost around $1,000 for the pair & should last years if installed & maintained properly. If the TDS is already higher than it should be at installation, they still work as you say. It just dramatically shortens the lifespan in my experience. WHO recommends max TDS at 500ppm (The membranes I replaced in Australia jumped dramatically over that level in Raja Ampat). The brand new ones we installed in Sorong produced water at over 470 when it should have been 150-300 max. It’s a frustrating situation, particularly in Indonesia where it is very difficult to source parts easily. Just another boat job I suppose. 🤷‍♂️😁

The forecast of the East Coast Low was showing up to 40 knots & 4m seas which we knew would be uncomfortable but easily doable. Unfortunately it got much worse in reality. We couldn’t head for New Cal as we were being squeezed by Cyclone Lola behind us. Just way too risky. Next option was to heave to. Option “C” was to head to Bundy. You play what is in front of you at the time I suppose. The whole situation was not ideal but there was no easy option from the moment the cyclone started developing near Vanuatu a week earlier. As for Aust Bio: No wonder so many International yachts now totally bypass Australia. We are in Indonesia now & most International cruisers we meet did not go to Aust after the Sth Pacific on their way here. Maybe the Australian authorities might take a lead from the NZ system. They maintain a very high level of bio security while still encouraging yachts to visit. It adds greatly to their local marine industry. Don’t even get me started about the whole “Export/Import” your Australian registered vessel bureaucratic fiasco!

    Why are you sailing with the wind from the side. For Security reasons a good sailor sails in winds and waves like this with the wind nearly from behind to ride the waves and protect material

    • @sailingjaygo
      @sailingjaygo 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @HansDoe AWA was about 70 & the boat settled at that angle ok. This was the best angle to achieve the outcome we were looking for & we still had options to fall back on.

    Hey there! It's been three years but I spent two weeks on a live-aboard dive boat in the same waters you explored in this video. Raja Ampat is hands down THE best scuba diving to be had. Which is partly why I was keen to enjoy your video but found it wanting. On your future episodes focus on the narrative,tell us a story and guide your audience through your adventures. 😉

    First video I have seen of you folks and it was an absolute joy watching that weather! You guys kept cool for the camera at least! All these other sailing channels put Clickbait claiming to be in rough seas and I always troll them for sure I can tell from your footage that you guys were taking it on! Good job

      @allrockfarmllc9909 Thanks mate. Definitely not click bait. It was windy & pretty rough alright. We don’t really want to make a habit of sailing in that stuff. LOL. 👍👍

    I'm new to these videos. Grew up in the 50s & 60s on LI always had runabouts & often had to pull ashore during storms but what you guys are doing is amazing. What are the limits? 20' swells & you guys are laughing!! This is incredible😮

    • @sailingjaygo
      @sailingjaygo หลายเดือนก่อน

      @steve691 We both grew up in families that always had runabouts as well. No way would you want to be in that weather in one! Not sure what the “limit” is for our boat, but this sort of weather is definitely not fun & we do try to avoid it if possible. (Don’t know the reference to LI? Sorry). 👍

    Anything above 20knts, it is recommended to sail with the Gib only. This boat is remarkable. What type/model of boat is this?

    Lucky conditions, sailing is soooo hard, particularly if solo, it at times can feel punitive, personal, but alas it's just mother sea simply has gallows humor, you folks are hard-core and brave, well done!!

    Great Video _ i have a question. It sounded like Waiiti Bay was in Moturua, but isn't it way up in the Cavalli Island group and not the Bay of Islands?

    • @sailingjaygo
      @sailingjaygo หลายเดือนก่อน

      @waynekoide3735 Maybe there is more than one of the same or similar name? We are definitely not locals & this was our first experience of that beautiful area, so I am not sure. We took the name from our charts & I think there was an information board on the beach there with the name on it as well.

    Not sure I would have pushed her to 9 knots in that weather. In my day you brought everything in, bare poles, made a bacon sarnie and then readied the boat for the coming storm. (and checked the survival kits and raft/ dinghy.) When its all over, off you go, a bit lower on bacon but otherwise well.

    So nice of course! Did you guys do a video on the installation of your bimini/dodger? Really nice setup for an Amel...

    • @sailingjaygo
      @sailingjaygo หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Colemn-Love The Bimini was designed by a previous owner & he had the frame fabricated, but the canvas top was stuffed. Dee re-designed & made all the new canvas work, including the top, clears etc before we moved onto the boat full-time & when we were still living in a house. The family room looked like a sail loft for a while! This was well before she started making the videos. We love it & wouldn’t change anything. Rob.
