      Haha. Gotta take the wins when you can. Many a world champion has won a regatta without winning a race in the final though. Consistency is the key! 😁😁👍👍

    I would have thought the Amel 50 could use its' Solent rigged headsails in a similar way with suitable poles. I know the Kraken 50 can do it, When I win the Lott and buy the Kraken that is for sail up at the Gold Coast I'll let you know. Anyway, if I get the Kraken I will come for a visit 🤣🤣🤣

      Hey David, the 50 may be able to run as you describe, I don’t know. However, many newer boats still have a faster VMG if gybing downwind. It was all a bit of fun though & I am not sure if the Amel 50 owner was trying too hard. 😁.

    I think you seem to be extremely skilled with an amazing boat, BUT why not wear life vests or jacklines? The new vests are really quite comfortable. I'm sure that you would know how to turn around really quickly, BUT what if you hit something and are unconscious when you hit the water? Have I sailed myself? Yes, a fair bit in my 66 year long life, not least with my previous Derecktor 50 ketch. I guess I'm just one of those slightly careful guys.....

      Hey Peter, fair question. Everybody’s risk profile is different. We always use jacklines when on offshore passage but not in fair weather coastal cruising. Likewise for life jackets when on deck.

    You have not rigged the poles correctly. This can cause a dangerous situation for you should you dip a pole into the water or accidentally jibe. (can be common in rolling seas). Look at the Amel SM manual for the instructions. The fore-guy (blue) should come back to the cleat just in front of the dodger. This adds enough elasticity in the line for the pole to flex backward to the rail position if needed and reduces stress on the mast. It should also run through a block at the bow and not the fair lead (again, per the instructions). There is a good reason that the blue line is as long as it is.
    Also, I believe the manual shows the jib sheet taken out of the travel car. It should go directly to the large block attached to the chainplate. Moving the car all the way backward might do the same but, I'm not sure.

      Hey Mark.
      I measured the blue line the way I rig it & it is actually slightly longer than the way described in the SM manual so functionally it operates the same way. The added benefit is that it keeps the decks clear. It can’t put any more load on the rig than in the way described in the manual. I don’t see a downside but nonetheless I did consult other owners (including one that you & I both know of and would consider an expert) before Dee posted this video. It actually did work as designed when we accidentally backwinded the Genoa, causing that line to stretch & the pole to swing in. Thanks for your input, I really value it & your experience.

      @@sailingjaygo Hi Rob, I'm a little confused as to how your method of rigging can make the fore guy (blue) slightly longer. At 1:03 on your video, it shows your setup, the excess line on the deck, and the cleat on the coach top just forward to the dodger that it should be fastened to. This would clearly be a longer line if fastened to the correct cleat. (looks like you have something else fastened to it)
      If you look at the blue line you will also see when attached to the correct cleat, the line markings put on by Amel to aid the pole setup align with this cleat.
      Not sure who you might have shown this to who agreed it is correct. I'm sorry to say, that person misled Dee.

      Hey Mark, yes the original Amel whipped line markings are still there. The line is definitely longer the way I have been rigging it. I measured it both ways. It also worked exactly as designed when we stuffed up & backwinded the Genoa. The blue line stretched & the pole immediately came in. NB. I am NOT advising anyone else to do anything any particular way. We never do on Dee’s videos. We only show what works for us.

      The Amel Manual is a little unclear about this Mark. The Amel Super Maramu 2000 Manual says that the blue line should be taken to the forward cleat ("blue one goes through the fore block and then is made to the front cleat") however the attached picture clearly later on shows that the blue line is fastened to the cabin deck cleat as you indicate. If you look at the video at th-cam.com/video/IWNB84j9hw0/w-d-xo.html, Rob has the white whipping not quite at the cleat as it should be and is on every other of the three lines. If you look at the picture in the Amel manual, however, the whipping is several meters ahead of the cabin deck cleat meaning they have added more slack to it (increasing its ability to absorb loads). I wonder if this was something they did after Crusader. I think the manual is poorly written in this instance but if it were MY boat (and every Super Maramu I've crewed on does the same), I would use the cabin deck approach as it increases the safety margin by adding a few more meters of line to stretch given an unforeseen backwind as can happen. I'd be interested to hear what Olivier would say about this..

      @NotBob223 Hey Bob, I measured the length of the line both ways. If running through a forward block at the stanchion, you would have to make fast on the cabin top to get the length. Where I ran it through the fairlead & back to the toe rail quarter cleat, it is slightly longer than running it as photographed in the manual (through a block & to the cabin top). This is what I was trying to achieve. It also widens the foreguy angle slightly, so it pulls more forward than in on the mast. To make it even longer, the rope does reach back to the cabin top from the fairlead if I want. Thanks for taking the time to look objectively at what I have done. It is important to note that I am not advising anyone to rig this a certain way, it was just to show what we do, & why. 👍

      Hey Wally. No. The Amel SM deck is faux teak. Just gelcoat in the mold. Super pragmatic.

      Definitely no buyers remorse. We love our SM (apart from the fact that the Amel 50 is in a totally different price league). 👍

      The 53 is the better boat, same thing with the 54. Best boats Amel Yard ever built, and ever will build.

    Lovely set up, down wind, however the rig design is questionable, quite a few Amel's have dismasted in similar conditions. hope ure's doesnt😌

      Hey Paul. I am very interested in where you get your information that a few Amels have been dismasted in similar conditions? I know of only two Super Maramus ever being dismasted other than in a collision. Bear in mind almost 500 were built between 1998 & 2006 & many have traveled huge distances across oceans. I wonder if many (any?) other brands have this reputation.

      Thanks for the reply Paul. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I know of two such dismastings .
      One being Aquarius & one being Crusader. This is why we explained how we rig our lines. I am pretty sure I know what happened on Crusader but I honestly don’t know what caused the dismasting of Aquarius & obviously am very keen to understand what he has learned. Thanks again.

      @@sailingjaygo I believe Aquarius rigged their poles incorrectly as you have. The rigger in one of their videos speaks of accidentally jibing putting stress on the mast - most likely due to this. If their insurance company figures this out, it's highly probable they will not get paid as it would be considered a policy violation.
