G'day! I love getting outdoors... especially canoe camping! I live in South Australia and most of my adventures are in the beautiful places you can find in this state, though I do travel into other parts of Australia and overseas too. I love going out solo, and am an advocate of adventuring by the Leave no Trace principles. I go out on lots of 2-10 day adventures as well as a big expedition each year.
In 2020 I section-paddled the lower end of the Murray River as I waited for the state borders to open up.
In 2021 I took on the expedition I'd dreamed of and planned for 2 years... a 2300km solo thru-paddle of the Murray River - a journey I allowed 20 weeks to complete. I will post MRX episodes as they're finished.
In 2022 I attempted thru-paddling the Murrumbidgee River, although I had to end that trip early due to illness. This series is coming too!
In 2023 my winter expedition took me back to the middle section of the Murray River. This series is on its way too!

MRX8 - Canoeing the whole Murray River - Echuca Moama to Torrumbarry Weir
Murray River Expedition - Episode 8 - The Journey Continues!
Days 30 - 36 of my 4½ month expedition down the Murray River.
After a well-needed break with all the comforts of town I'm feeling refreshed and ready to take on the next part of my adventure. Paddling past the Echuca Wharf on a quiet autumn morning and getting a whistle from each of the famous paddle steamers chugging up the river is a memory I'll never forget!

Glenelg River canoe trip - Swift Cruiser 16.8

Chris (@FreedomOnFoot) and I head off on a 4 day adventure, paddling along the Glenelg River in south-west Victoria. This is another journey in Roo, my Swift Cruiser 16.8 Pack... it rained a lot, but it was otherwise perfect paddling conditions. Another beautiful part of Australia, I highly recommend exploring it for yourself sometime soon! If you're interested to give it a go and don't have yo...

I’m not the only one who reuses plastic jars! A most interesting look at a well thought out kit.
@@Whatiwantedwastaken thanks mate! Yep, they're useful for so many things... it's a waste to throw them out!
@ whilst probably not as useful for your canoe trips I make good re-use of the 1kg rectangular gravy buckets from Costco for my vehicle based camping. I discovered your channel whilst looking for inspiration for a Chowilla trip and my kids have been very much enjoying your Murray trip videos, with occasional interruptions from me as you pass places I’ve worked. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
No line out for a fish or 2?
😄 I don't have the patience for fishing I'm afraid, but I was very lucky to be gifted a couple of filleted Yellow-belly (aka Callop or Golden Perch) when I got further down the river by a keen fisherman I'd met on the river the day before 👍
Can you put her your ‘set up’? Gear etc? Save ppl 2 years:)))
G'day Miles. Yep, sure can! I did a whole video on just that question after I'd paddled 400kms of the Murrumbidgee... you can find it here: th-cam.com/video/kGWeKU6PUMY/w-d-xo.html
Another excellent video. I still hope to paddle with you one day.
One day we'll make it happen Karts... for sure!
Hi Amy, I am looking at buying the 3F taiji 2 tent but just wondering how waterproof it is because I noticed that you have a trap over yours at picnic point.
@@ralphhalwes3376 G'day Ralph. Yep, it's plenty waterproof... I've had mine in a few storms without a tarp over it, and I've been nice and dry inside. I use the tarp for a few reasons... 1. To blend into the environment a bit more, I.e. camouflage - this was the main reason I did it at picnic point, I didn't want to draw too much attention to myself. 2. To keep heavy dew from wetting the tent if I have to get up and away early. 3. To make it darker in the tent at night during full moon (otherwise it's like sleeping under a street light!) 4. For shade during summer, so I can sleep in past first light without my tent turning into a sauna 5. When it is due to rain it gives me somewhere dry to put my gearbags, and to sit and cook without getting wet... the awning the tarp creates makes camping in the rain a generally lovely experience because I can sit outside and watch the rain on the river... and know Incan pack up a dry tent in the morning! Packing up a wet tarp and a dry tent is much nicer than packing a soggy tent and then hoping it'll have time to dry before you put your gear in that night, because a scrunched up wet tent means a wet tent inside and out when you pull it out of the stuff sack... doesn't matter how waterproof your tent is, if you pack it up wet the water seeps everywhere through the tent. So yeah, my taiji tent is excellent, and has never leaked... they're a great tent. The benefits of a tarp over a tent, any tent, are always worth the painful exercise of putting it up each night I reckon... I rarely camp without a tarp over my tent now, no matter what the weather forecast is.
@@AmyOutdoors Thanks.
Nice one Amy. Video making and the river ... just keep plugging away. Love the photography and some grand local stories.
Thanks so much Ponch, much appreciated! The river locals really made my trip, for sure 💙 I'm looking forward to watching your latest River Dreams episode this weekend!
Great to see you back producing great videos again. 😃
Cheers Nas, really appreciate that 👍
Wonderful to see your next instalment of your Murray River epic, Amy. Beautiful balance of scenery and commentary and sharing the sense of what you were experiencing. These videos are always worth the wait!
@@FreedomOnFoot thank you Chris! That's so kind of you, and means a lot mate 💙 I hope you've been well and have managed to fit in a few adventures since our Glenelg paddle 😊
Another wonderful episode! There are always gonna be ups and downs on any adventure, especially the longer ones. Hope you got through the downs! Thanks for sharing your awesome trip. :) :)
@@jacqueline7118 thank you so much Jacqueline 💙 These long adventures certainly teach us a lot about ourselves and the kindness of others. I wish everyone had the opportunity to do at least one in their lifetime!
Great to see you back The sand bar that say private property They can’t stop you camping there Because nsw owns the river and so far back on farmland I not sure but about 60 mtrs I think That’s both sides of the river 🤙🤙
Cheers Toby! Unfortunately it's only 60m back from the river on the VIC side that you can legally camp on. NSW is private property all the way to the rivers edge, except in state forests, etc. And I prefer to err on the side of caution anyway... I will avoid annoying landholders if at all possible 😊
@@AmyOutdoors ok thanks for the correction 👍
Pretty sure we're all super grateful that you chose to do this for your LS leave.
Haha, cool, thanks Elly!
Keep on going, only a little bit further to go, have enjoyed this episode like all the others, Have been watching your border cliffs to wellington all over again waiting for MRX8,
Thanks Ralph...and thanks for rewatching the SA Murray series too 😊 Just a little further to go 😉
Great Video Amy - Seeing you with the Ice Cream in Echuca I was thinking that is exactly what I would do too!
Cheers Joe! Yep, doesn't matter that it was almost winter... icecream on an expedition must be enjoyed whenever possible!
Doing a fantastic job with your videos Amy, keep them coming, you have inspired my wife and I to resume our section paddling of the Murray after a few years off.
Oh, that's so awesome Steve! What is your next section to paddle? And thanks mate, really appreciate your kind words 😊
@@AmyOutdoors we’ve done Border Cliffs down to Wellington so next will be Wentworth to Border Cliffs. Already booked a week off in September to do it. Happy paddling.

So good to see another episode again! Keep them coming.
G'day mate, and cheers 😊 Hope you've been well... looks like you've been getting plenty of practice in on Sydney Harbour. Got another paddling expedition planned or is it all about the ballooning at the moment?
@@AmyOutdoors it's all about work and ballooning at the moment. I must be due for another mid-life crisis sometime. Need to finish the Bidgee at some point.
@auntymonkey01 haha, yep! No mid-life crisis for me this year though 😉 I need to finish the Bidgee one day too... should be a lot easier for me with a lighter boat now. Just got to get a few scratches on her before I subject her to that trip though 😆
Hi Amy Outdoors. Thanks for sharing the video. I have enjoyed yours and Andrew Robertson's videos of the Murray River. So much so, that 5 friends and I started paddling from Bringenbrong Bridge 1st August. 3 only had enough time to paddle to Cobram but 3 of us are continuing to the Murray Mouth all going well. Indeed we are having a rest day in Echuca today (19th Aug) and may only be a short while behind you and our paths may well cross. Happy paddling.
That's so cool to hear, well done to all of you! If only I was still on the river! I finished this thru-paddle back in August 2021. It's just taken me a bloomin' long time to get a chance to edit my videos and post them! All the best for the rest of your journey... send me a message if you're keen to catch up as you pass through Renmark or Berri - if I'm in the Riverland at the time I'll try to meet you all for a yarn 👍

Hi Amy. Hope you are well. My brother and I are still paddling the Murray and are camped near Wentworth tonight with the intention of getting to Renmark on the 20th for a rest day the following day. We would be in Berri on the 22nd. Not sure where you are located but I am just exploring whether you are interested in a catch up on one of those nights. Hope it works out. Regards, Michael
Hi Michael, and great to hear you and your brother managed to keep going! I hope your journey so far has been all you hoped it would be 🤞 Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to meet up this coming weekend 🙁 I'll be in Adelaide. Bummer! Hi all, 🙏thanks for waiting so long for this episode to drop! My plan was to release the remaining MRX episodes in batches of 3 eps, dropped a week apart... but life just keeps getting in the way, and I haven't made any headway on MRX 9 and 10 yet 😕 So I'm releasing this video now without any idea when the next one will be released (or finished!). Would love to hear the whole song like this " brilliant".

As with all your videos your talent for filming is second to none and, in my humble opinion, this includes professional people .Not only does it document your adventures but you have a real talent for capturing the moods of the various places along the way as well as the beauty that surrounds you. Well done. You've inspired me to begin looking again for the best vessel that I can find to begin my own travels on the river---something that I'd almost forgotten about due to the events of the last few years.🙂🚣
Wow, thank you so much Graeme! That's very kind of you to say 🙂 I hope you do find your perfect vessel... when you do it's like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
Just the best. It's how I would expect an adventure like this to be .with all the ups and downs. Good on you, Amy. I'm quite jealous as I've been trying to do a similar trip but in a power boat (which will kill the tranquillity, I know ) for some time now. The film you've put together is very good. Congratulations.
😊 that's so kind of you, thanks Graeme! A trip down the river in any form is one worth doing, and each will have their benefits... I'd love to do it in a houseboat one day 🤞 I hope you make your trip happen one day, all the best 👍
It was difficult to watch you having a hard time, I'm glad you were able to pick yourself up.
lol nice one Amy canoes are like the semi trailer of paddling . all that gear and some wonderful comforts but no chair . or did you just forget to mention the chair ?
G'day! Yes you got that right... gotta love a canoe for a huge gear load out! I don't carry a chair on solo canoe camping trips anymore... I spend all day in a comfy chair in my canoe (the OT Next's seat is just so bloomin' comfortable!), so when I get to camp it's just more convenient to sit in the doorway of my tent on the little butt-sized piece of yoga mat which is on top of one of the small tarps I use as a verandah mat for the tent... because everything is within easy reach!
@@AmyOutdoors fair enough . happy paddling
Hi Amy. Great video and great conditions. Your hull is much smoother and should help with the paddling. We have been there many times as through trips and base camps with small children. you can paddle down from Dartmoor and also get out on the lake at the end. The reflections of the cliffs were great. Aren't those shacks an eyesore - and welcome to leeches! Nelson pub does a good feed at the end - but you are a gourmand! David
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the new canoe glides beautifully! Love a good pub meal too!
Hi Amy. A friend put me onto your videos and i have thoroughly enjoyed them all, particularly the SA section. i like that you take your time and do the side trips such as Ajax/Achilles and Katarapko. you have a good position in the canoe and an upright posture and reach forward with your strokes - anyway you seem to make a good pace! i liked the scenery and camping shots and that you had a small fire that you buried. your experience was so reminiscent for me of all these parts. Well done. David
G'day David, thanks for the comment! It's always lovely to hear that folks find my videos enjoyable 💙 I'm also glad you've been able to reminisc your own journeys along the river. I do love my rivertime! Cheers 👍
bummer. We carry a big sponge for such events! David
Yes, bummer!
Hi Amy, just discovered your awesome channel. Can you tell me roughly how many kms you average when heading downstream?
I think your 6kms an hour explanation covers my question. ❤
@@SmashTheAdventure thanks for checking out my videos 😊 Yep, speed will depend where on the Murray you are... upper reaches have faster current which slows down to very little current once you're in SA.
Another great video! The banging noise you were describing could have been goats hitting their horns together. :0) That section with the fast water and narrow turning point is a bit disconcerting...from a rowing boat point of view... Thanks again.
That's the narrowest it gets. A rear view mirror would be a good idea through there I think
Hi Amy, what an inspiring video footage. I really appreciated you sharing your ups and downs as it makes it so much more real and human. Very educational also and helps with the planning for my trip. Thanks heaps.
Thanks Anja. As hard as it was to pull the camera out at those low moments I knew it would tell the story more fully and give anyone watching a better understanding of what it's really like to do this trip. There are so many amazing moments you could easily fill a few hours telling those good-news stories and give the impression that it's all rainbows and unicorns, but the hard moments are what makes this journey so memorable and helps us grow in the end.
I am looking at doing this type of trip how much drinking water did u carry with you thanks and what brand is the tent you take need as much help as I can get
Awesome! It definitely worth doing 👌 I carried 13L of water during autumn/winter which would last me a week or so. My tent is a 3F UL Taiji 😊
actually I usually carried 16L of water... I forgot to include what my smaller 1L bottles could carry, lol
Any more handy hits need all the help I can get lol
What type of sleeping mat are you using?
It's a zempire monstamat 😊
What shop sells the milo sachets? Iv found nestle coffee sachets at the reject shop in renmark but cant find the milo ones..? Love your playlists by the way. aww shucks, thanks mate! Definitely my prefered way to enjoy the river and it's nature 😊The milo sachets came from one of the asian grocers in Adelaide a few years ago. I managed to find some in Robinvale when I was there a couple of years ago too... but they're rare as hens teeth unfortunately.
