    I had been thinking of using a poncho for my upcoming canoe adventure (12 nighter at algonquin), but because of the portages and wind conditions, I have changed my mind. Lovely footage! I always enjoy looking for birds in the background whilst watching your videos.

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, another bird lover! I try hard not to go overboard in my filming of birds, lol... I know everyone doesn't enjoy them the same as I do, but glad to hear you're on the same page as me :)
      Wow, 12 days in Algonquin - that sounds like heaven!
      Good choice with the poncho decision... and after what Uncle Kevin said yesterday about it pinning you down if you capsize in a rapid I think that's a very good idea. We don't have rapids here, so I should be ok, lol. That said, I'm also going to take a rain jacket for days like this in future, when you know you're not going to be putting it on and taking it off all day a jacket is a bit more practical.

    Nice day on the water!
    That campsite is ace! You’re own private beach and all haha,
    Definitely agree about sleeping with rain drops on the tent, so nice’
    I just that sound of the rain while you were cooking and eating, so relaxing

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed! Nothing wrong with a paddle in the rain, especially if the wind is coming from behind you. Rain is a rare occurrence for us in SA, so I love being out in it if the weather isn't too wooly.

    Going to sleep with the sound of rain on the tent is awesome.... packing up a wet tent in the rain next morning... not so much (hopefully the morning was kind to you :)

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! Thankfully the rain stopped around 4am and the sun was out the next morning... at least while I was packing up camp! Microfibre towels are worth their weight in gold on mornings like that.

      @@AmyOutdoors did you name your boat . And was it before it got wet . Mine is a two seater. So i will be paddleing from the rear seat. And gear in the front for balance. How much weight will your canoe hold . I went with the two seater to get a better weight limit. All my wildlife camera gear is quite heavy . And like you i like my luxurys . Like a proper chair to sit in. And a table . .mine will carry 400kg.
      Happy paddling

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, my canoe doesn't have a name... yet. I'm thinking it needs one. I've always named my motorbikes, but for some reason never my kayaks or canoe. I was told by one of the lockmasters that if my canoe does have a name I should tell it to them so they can write it in the register - he was the only one that ever asked though.
      My canoe has a weight rating of 204kg. I can tell the difference in how the boat sits and tracks in the water depending on what I've got in it with me. A proper chair and table are one of the benefits of canoe camping in my opinion!

    Love kayaking in the rain, not so much setting up and packing up, if it looks like rain I use a “rain fly “ of course need trees or poles.
    You had a nice quiet paddle, looks relaxing 😃

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, paddling in the rain is quite nice, so long as it's not windy... so this was a good day for it. I've got a tarp to put up, but yeah, no trees 😬 lol.

    Were you ever worried for your own safety doing the trip by yourself ? And congrats anyway on the videos you have posted about your trips........beautiful stuff. Best regards from me here in Waikerie.

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome to the journey BC, great to have another local along! I'm really pleased to hear you've enjoyed the videos so far too :) Yes, I have been worried about my safety on a few occasions... only at camp though, the paddling alone has never worried me. There are a number of things I do and carry to ensure I'm as safe as I can be though, and I feel the risk is managed as well as it can be. It's one of the reasons I'm often setting up camp late - I'll leave a potential camp spot to look for another one if it doesn't feel right.

    cool video! well done taking on the big long river trip. How come you like the kayak paddle? having a tailwind is one of the best feelings in the world eh. Excited for your next video!

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers TC! I'm originally a kayaker so the double-bladed paddle is what I know and love... and the OT Next is designed to be paddled with one, so it works well for my set-up. I'll probably get a prospector and a lovely wooden canoe paddle one day.
      A tailwind is wonderful on days like this, for sure!

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your kind words Joe! The vast majority of this series was filmed on my phone, a Samsung Note 10+, though the aerial footage was with a DJI Mavic Air drone, and the back-of-the-canoe shots in the last 5 videos was on a gopro hero black 8.

      Ripper of a campsite! That was the first time that fly (the green one) had seen rain. I got the green fly for my existing tent a few months back... the white fly was just a little bit too look-at-moi ;).

      Thanks Roy, glad you enjoyed this one too! I'm not aware of any canoe camping groups in SA, junior or senior 😉. There are a few paddling clubs though, and they might be able to point you in the right direction... maybe give Adelaide Canoe Works a call, they're sure to know of any if they exist.

    Hi Amy, just wondering the brand tent you are using, have been to tent world to look, just needing something that's quick and easy. Thanks

    • @AmyOutdoors
      @AmyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      G'day Marinella. I'm using a 3F UL Taiji (or Tai Chi, depending on which seller it is) from aliexpress.com
      Tentworld has a big range! For 'quick and easy' look for features like hooks that go over the poles, rather than pole sleeves (pole sleeves can be slow and painful to slide the poles into... not good if it's raining), doors on the side rather than at the end, two doors if you'll be sharing your tent with someone, and if possible an inner tent and fly that go up at the same time (rather than having to put the inner tent up and then put the fly on - not many tents do that, which is why I ordered the Taiji online from China). the smaller it folds down the better, and if you're only going to use it for canoe and car camping then weight isn't going to matter much, but if you'll be using it for hiking too --> get the lightest you can afford that has the features you want... it's worth it!
