Squarebody engine oil cooler line replacement
มุมมอง 4814 วันที่ผ่านมา
Had a decent oil leak from one of my engine oil cooler lines on my 454 BBC Squarebody Chev Suburban. Nice easy fix due to access to factory parts still being available - need to be ordered from the states but rockauto does a great job of getting parts sent out to Australia quickly. Only a small handful of tools where required - mainly a 13/16" and 7/8" open end spanners and 13mm spanners. I did...

Attention Land Rover Owners! I Tested the BEST value OBD Scan Tool

Today I tested the Launch Creader Elite JL, quite honestly a fantasic diagnostic unit for Land Rovers that is nearly as good as a GAP IID but for far less $$. Yeah the gap is better for funcionality but this is not far behind and I think its probably better value for money for 90% of DIY mechanics out there. What Happens When You Use Valvoline Restore and Protect? Lets Find out

Valvoline Restore and Protect engine oil is a new product here in Australia. I've seen some promising data on this oil so thought I'd give it a try in my outlander to see if it can reduce some of the oil consumption. I know this engine looks nice and clean, and I do have a vehicle in mind that will be particularly filthy inside so I'll be keen to try it out on that one too This will be a long p...
Disco 3 Engine Removal with Auto Trans

G'day everyone, I've had a buyer for the 2.7TD in my Land Rover Discovery 3 that I'm parting out. So I've spent 2 days removing the engine, gearbox and transfer case. Body on of course as I don' have a hoist at home. Most youtube creators I've seen have left the auto trans in the car, but its perfectly do-able with the trans remaining attached to the motor. Between 3000 miles and 4000 miles the oil turned dark amber color. During oil the change chunks of sludge came out I’ve never see that. What on a 135,000 mile truck with religious oil changes at 4000 miles with premium oil. Prior owners used royal purple and I used mobile one.
Seems like its doing a good job for you!
Thank you very much for the video Peter, is it normal that during the summer with a lot of heat and the air conditioning on the oil temperature rises to 135 degrees?
@@raula.c4771 I've never seen mine past 125, and that's with a camper trailer in tow uphill in summer
@Shanes_Shed Thank you very much. Perhaps the oil pump is not working properly. A recent measurement showed 1 bar with an engine temperature of 87 degrees.
Somewhere in the 80-90 degree range is where I’ve typically seen the oil temps when doing typical driving around with minimal load. With a load on like towing a trailer oil temps should bump up to sit around 100deg and when working hard uphills is where it will get into the 120s. Also with those higher engine oil temps the coolant temp is up around 110. I would not expect to see high oil temps without also seeing higher than normal coolant temps
Merry Christmas man, roll with whatever goes, you've had a pretty good year on the tube I thought, nice growth 🤙 hope you and the family have a great xmas and new years!
It was a good year, I have a vision of where I want to be but it will probably take a couple of years to get to that point.
@@Shanes_Shed You will get there mate, determination and focus is the key!
Plus lots of money - very important part when playing with cars😒
Merry Christmas Mate You got any time off in the holidays we should catch up
I fly back to work Xmas eve - I have the later half of Jan off. I did have the start of Jan but moved my leave around due to a shut down at work.
thanks for the video man
No problem!
Did you bring it or buy it?
I bring it to Byrons, but I buy it earlier😆
Thanks man, I gave up this afternoon trying to get it out. Now that I see that it can actually come out, I'll give it another crack tomorrow.
Don’t give up, it comes out fairly easily
@@Shanes_ShedGot it! It came out the same side as yours even though it's a left hand drive. Thanks man.
I replaced my leak off loom couple of months back and managed to not loose a clip thankfully however the rear drivers side is still weeping though nowhere near as bad as it was. I could not get a genuine return pipe loom at the time and was supplied after market. Is there some trick to prevent them weeping ?
See my reply to the same question on your other comment
I replaced mine couple of months back and managed to not loose a clip thankfully however the rear drivers side is still weeping though nowhere near as bad as it was. I could not get a genuine return pipe loom at the time and was supplied after market. Is there some trick to prevent them weeping ?
Generally they shouldn't weep. Its just an oring seal so there is a chance that the seal is not quite the correct size (being a non genuine part), there could be some dirt/debris in the seal area preventing proper sealing, there's always the possibility of damage done to the oring during installation. Theres also the possibility that it could be an issue on the injector itself with damage to the oring seat area (unlikely I would think). Unfortunately it would most likely require the individual leak off line to be removed from the problem injector for inspection.
@ thanks I had though probably a bit of debris in there. I’ll pull that line and squirt with a can of brake cleaner then hit with compressed air. Maybe some o ring lube will help too. All the others are fine.
hey bud, did you have to drop the front diff oil at all ? even if both sides have to be done. thanks
If your only working on one side at a time and just have that one side jacked up then you can get away without dropping the oil. If both sides are jacked up equally then you may lose a little bit of oil
Many thanks for the video. What year of manufacture is the car? Any tip to confirm actual pump model required without having to remove old one?
Mine was a 2005. 2005-2009 2.7TD should be a LR014064
Where the hell is the dipstick to check level?
Those started disappearing from auto transmissions in the 90's
@Shanes_Shed oooof. Well I may have a leak and don't know if I'm low. I guess I'll have to drain and flush. My concern is that I don't know if the drain plug socket is cracked from someone bottoming out. I don't know if removing it will make it worse.
Great video! Do you think that the 2.0 did variant is gonna work the same?
I'm sure it would be very similar
Nice 👌 I like that tie down strap tip that mint 👌 Is there any specific tools that would make that job easyer pipe spanner etc
Slipping ramps give me the shits. Crows foot spanner could work, might have some clearance issues at the filter housing as the two lines are fairly close together. I did cut down a 7/8 open ended to fit into the area a little better
@Shanes_Shed Just an idea maye throw the tools you used in the description to help other But man i still love that strap tip
Don't forget your post gas setting to cool the Tungsten down after done with weld and hold it there until its done blowing about 7 seconds.
Didn't quite have 7 seconds post gas - from memory I had 3 or 4 seconds set. But it takes a bit of thought to remember to hold it there all the time - I've mainly used stick welding in the past so theres alot more going on that I need to be thinking of all the time.
Ok , thanks for nothing .
Well ok, thanks for the comment at least
Hi Sir , i love your videos. I have changed like you the return pipe but im haven an engine system fault. Im not finding the problem. Can you help me with a suggestion , what to do ?
All depends on what the fault is. Would need a bit more explanation and fault codes to assist a bit more
He'll do fine...i took the old fashion route, practice, practice, practice. You learn so much from the mistakes that you make !
definatly, best way to learn is just get in and have a crack. We have a few failures along the way, but thats fine.
I learned how to tig aluminum the old school way with pure tungsten. I was recently having issues trying to weld aluminum with a new machine. Apparently the new technology in todays machines doesn't allow the use of pure tungsten anymore. If you have an inverter type machine you should be using ceriated tungsten.
I was using Zirconiated tungsten (white) tig tungsten
Aluminum is quite the fun material to weld. When everything goes well it’s fun, when things go bad it’s frustrating to say the least lol. I have a couple tips for aluminum, hope they help: You want to keep a slightly longer arc gap than steel, aluminum will jump to the tungsten otherwise. Settings wise (unsure on what you can adjust) you want to be at 60 to 200hz (higher narrows the bead and lessens penetration) a/c balance around 70-75% EN (25-30% EP or cleaning). Make sure to prep the material super clean and wipe it with acetone to clean the oils off. Beyond that aluminum likes a lot of heat at first, medium heat in the middle of the bead, and no heat at the end. Use the foot pedal a lot to achieve that. You will get the hang of it in no time, keep up the practice 👍. Good catch on the leaky gas hose. Edit: I almost forgot, always fill in craters at the end of welds or they will crack. Often times they crack before the weld cools. Aluminum is hot short sensitive, so you want to avoid heating it super hot and letting it cool fast (aka molten weld pool to solid metal). Try to ease on/off the heat.
Thanks for the tips, greatly appreciated as it’s quite different to welding I’ve done in the past.
lol it's not that hard
We can't all be experts at the first attempt
Thumbs up for giving it a try
Gotta start somewhere
Clean up where your planing on welding.the cleaner the material the better.
I had an “oil production” issue in my wife’s 2011 Honda CR-V K24 engine (not Direct Injection). Fuel dilution was at nearly 5% using GC method. Replaced all injectors with new Honda original and no change. After several ~3K oil changes with Valvoline Restore & Protect, I am below 2% on the last 5K oil change. The data tells me it is working.
That's awesome to hear - it sounds like it has really helped!
Reminds me of myself and my attempts to weld haha. Practice makes perfect ah
It’s a bit harder than they make it look on TH-cam😝
I have no doubt Paul will make it back home mate after all he's driving an old Holden lol. Have a great day. Choppersrule1
I'm sure it will go ok as well - he's had some good people helping out
@Shanes_Shed yes he has and one day I would like to meet them all as well
very simple engine, but the cooling system is its downfall if ignored
this one died earlier this year due to loss of oil pressure.
@@Shanes_Shed the oil pumps are supposed to be replaced at the same time with timing belt and water pump, but yeah cheap p.o.s 😂
I havent previously heard or read anything regarding the oil pumps on them needing to be changed. Agree they are a cheap POS however
Awesome mate
Thanks Paul, I assume your all done by now and making your way back home?
@ yeah man, 3000ks down, in Mildura for the night and 1000ks home tomorrow 👌🏻
Nearly there! Hope its been trouble free
@ had it’s moments but all in all it’s good
I got the same engine at 56k miles burns a lil oil and am thinking of trying this oil but i cant find it anywhere in the uk and the import fees are not very attractive 😢
The people who comment from the US are all envious of us having a 10W40 version of it here
Seems 10-40 oils are becoming a bit yesterdays news. Except for Classic Cars and motorcycles.. Wish we could get it here in 10-40 I'd like to try it out in a few different motorcycles Can't use the 30 weight oils cause they are considered energy conserving wet clutch issues crop up with those oil ratings.
xW-40 oil is one of the more popular grades here in Australia so we wouldn't class them as yesterdays news. But yeah you'd defiantly need an oil thats compatible with wet clutches in bikes
It was an awesome weekend cars and chilling with mates
Can't wait until the next time!
Thanks Shane for the excellent and detailed video. I just noticed today when changing front brake pads on my 2010 ZH Outlander, the inner CV boots have torn on both sides with grease escaping. The car has done 400K kms and not having any issues with the outer CV joints (no noise) so thinking of following your procedure to change the inner boots but on both sides. Looks pretty straight forward on the drivers side as you’ve shown. Is it the same on the passenger side? Wondering if there’s a snap ring to lock in the axle on the other side. I’ve got the manual gearbox. Hope you can help with some advice. Thanks again. Clear and easy to follow video. Craig
Similar on the other side, just doesn’t have the outer bearing to remove. It should have a snap ring to lock the cv in place. I normally use a brass drift to tap on the inner cv and drive it out
Thanks Shane. I’ll compare the manual gearbox layout with your video but I reckon it’ll be similar to the auto. Thanks for info on the other side. Seems manageable at my end. I’ll research some more, order the boots and seals and get it done. Happy to shout you a beer anytime. I’m semi retired and do Adventure Motorcycling. So no doubt will pass wherever you are in Australia someday. Thanks again. Only just discovered your channel so I’ll explore your other videos. Kind regards, Craig.
Mines is a manual also😉I’m over in Perth - just spent last weekend in Sydney myself. I could deal with the blue mountains as a place to live - Sydney itself not so much..
Hi Shane. I decided on the expensive option and install new L and R axles. I just wanted to ask if the R axle and extension with bearing can be easily split or do I have to find a new extension with bearing piece. I’m thinking there’s a snap ring holding the extension and R axles together. In your video, you didn’t have to do this. But the new part will come with the CV axle minus the extension/ bearing. So I’ll have to seperate and fit the extension to the new axle. Thinking of riding through the centre next year to the Kimberly’s and heading south to Perth and across the Nullarbor. So will keep you in mind for that beer! Yes, Blue Mountains is still pretty nice place to live and raise the kids. Sydney is too busy for my liking. Craig
It was a while ago I done this job so I can’t recall how the centre cv bell was attached to the rest of the shaft. I would have thought a brand new one would be complete and ready to go with no stuffing around required
Keen to see how your experiments turn out. Running on a well looked after RX330 and on a LS430 with patchy service history. Both have been running Mobil 0w40 in my ownership which is known for cleaning. I feel R&P is very expensive here in Aus; but its OK when on special (recently 30% off)
Yeah it’s not the cheapest, not that much more than Mobil 1 however
@Shanes_Shed 5w50 Mobil is on clearance at Supercheap FYI
Awesome weekend!
Yes it was!
Interesting to know Hyundai owners are the same from one continent to the other! Lol
Owner brought this one new and then didn't service it. I've been slowly getting her to change her ways by looking after this one a little better.
When I look down into oil fill there is a thin hard brown crust or heavy film will it clean off.
Well I'm in the process of finding out - here's my other test case that's in worse condition. th-cam.com/video/KzgEIt4LhFU/w-d-xo.html
@Shanes_Shed I bought a 2004 lincoln town car 2 years and immediately switched to Amsoil Signatue - the internals now look new. As a winter diver I purchased a 2010 toyota Rav4 4wd, the build quality on this is amazing, at 255,000 miles it's better than some a lot newer stuff I had back in the but it didn't have the best of care. If I get a scope I'll send you a picture of the deposits. TX!
@phillipholmes4466 that would be awesome
You still got any bits from your motor from your disco? I broke the fuel return line from the high pressure pump to the fuel cooler 😢
Can't help you out with that one unfortunately, that would have gone with the engine from memory
