Build an Awesome Wood Porch on your Metal Building
Want to transform the look of your workshop or garage? Adding a porch will do it. I'm not talking about the metal porches that can be ordered with your building. What I wanted was something that would keep the sun off of the south west wall and look good doing it so I went with wood. Let's get busy!

Quick and Easy Way to Remove Adhesive!

My mother gave me some great advice growing up but one tip she gave me four decades ago has come in handy dozens of times. She would use this trick to remove price tags or tape and so I decided to see how it held up against a more common product used for this. It's a battle of Goo Gone verses Williams Lectric Shave to see which product works quicker. Let's get busy! Buy my books: www.amazon.com...

Awesome 75 Year Old Van Dorn Drill Gets a Restoration

The Van Dorn name disappeared back in 1951 so we know this is at least 74 years old. It's heavy, built to last and deserving of some attention after sitting all those years. I was wondering, why didn't you guys paint all the wood before you ever put it up? And did you use an oil-based paint or a latex? For me when it comes to outdoor stuff, I used oil-based in the past because while mold may actually get on it, mold doesn't affect the paint itself. Mold can eat latex paint! I was also wondering why you just didn't effectively make a carport on the front of your shop so that you could have three more parking spaces? I get the visual aesthetics portion of why you did what you did but to me that was a great big waste of space? My thinking goes as such that you could have accomplished both things with proper planning?

Good point about the painting in advance. It would have made it easier but we didn't plan things right and ended up starting the project a week early when we picked up most of the material due to changes in our schedules. You'll note that once I had a spare day I was painting all of the wood for the second week in advance. I used oil based paint on the beams of my porch and I agree. It seems to handle it better. I'm hoping the Kilz will help solve the mold issue but time will tell. As far as adding more length to the porch, this was all I could get away with for zoning. Apparently the structure can not come as far forward as the body of the main house, so early on I decided that I'd rather have a longer workshop and a shorter porch. The porch was added to help get it through approval with the local Historical Society. I will say, there is a two car carriage porch as well as a three car garage on the property already so I didn't really need the parking area.

Also i can tell you what you have but when 46:43 you throw the tool so fast,my eyes cannot make out any small trademarks. Overall good score.

Thanks for the detailed information on that fan. I have just about the same one that happens to have a extra silver box. It almost looks like a can of sardines on the underside below the base cover. I kind of figured that was how it changed it speeds somehow. The real question I have is how to remove the selector knob at the base without breaking that part. I found a broken solder joint that would be much easier to repair if I took the selector switch out. Thanks so much.

Likely the switch knob has a set screw. it's possibly hidden by a small plug in the knob. I think most of these later Westinghouse fans had a screw on fastener to hold the switch in place.

Modern vehicles are crazy with complexity. I can't imagine most of them reaching 20 years old with all of this technology.

The instructions say to go in then out really slowly. Then do more coats at spacific entervals. It does really well for me.

I did do a very slow pull but it didn't seem to make much difference. Maybe it's the Florida humidity. :) Likely it's my impatience.

That came out fantastic! I am thinking that small handle meant the drill was designed for use in small spaces.

Thanks! That's a good point about using it in small spaces. Considiering the surprising amount of power this has the lack of grip space makes little sense otherwise.

You're going to have to start a museum! Or at the very least open it up to students who can learn about some of the tools that their forefathers used. Otherwise great work, so informative!

Thanks! I do work with some kids to show them how to rebuild these. I let them keep the tools when they're done. Some of them actually use them like they're not antiques. Any kids who want to really put the drills to work are also given a more modern/practical drill to keep with it. Most of these old drills aren't even reversible.

Nicely done. She cleaned up well. Did that originally have paint? I remember using MANY of those old metal ones, some were painted and some weren’t. Perfect ending with Mugsy.

Thanks! Funny you mention the paint. I've wondered why it was that some of these were painted and others are polished. It may be that painting was just an option or to differentiate the models. I have no idea.

      @ I know I started using them in the 70s. I remember some didn’t have paint, I think my father had a 60s 3/8 that didn’t have paint. I know I used a bunch of 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in the 80s and some did and some didn’t. I don’t know.

@ I prefer the polished look but maybe the paint added more grip so before they switched to plastic and rubber they used painted metal.
