If router is not behind a NAT and my ip address always remains the same from my ISP, Do i still enable DDNS and do port forwarding for extra assurance and peace of mind? Incase my IP do change.
Since Dynamic DNS is free, I would enable it as a backup Incase it ever changed. If the router is behind another router, then you would still have to Port Forward. If you are using it as your main router you can skip Port Forwarding.
Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thank you! 🙏
Hi Justin, first thank you so much for the support on how to get this working. I have done the setup using flint 1 and beryl . It worked fine for 3 months and all the sudden it stopped connecting the client. when i view the log is says "Sat Nov 23 11:51:09 2024 daemon.notice netifd: wgclient (8741): Name does not resolve: [my Server Endpoint]' Sat Nov 23 11:51:09 2024 daemon.notice netifd: wgclient (8741): Configuration parsing error" Do you know how I can solve this problem? The only change i can think off is my internet provider in the US had a outage for a day so i used openVPN with Nord to work but then i switched back to my setup once the outage was resolved. It worked for a day and then now the client is not connected
Since it is saying the DNS is not resolving, please type your Server Dynamic DNS name into justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php and see if it returns an IP Address. If so, it may be a DNS (Not Dynamic DNS) issue on the Client Travel Router. Let me know.
First off all I wanted to thank you for this content, and i wanted to ask you if it’s possible to make this configuration with two GL AX1800 routers?
Thank you. Yes, you can use two of the same routers, the descriptions lists a few different options sorted by performance.
Can you install windows 11 pro on these tablets?
Not on this one, it can barely run Android in 32 bits 😆 There are tablets that already have Windows on them and typically run at 64 bits which is preferred.
@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 can you please give me some names of cheap but efficient tablets that can run windows 11 pro smoothly
Can I buy two GL travel routers and do the same instead of using GL and Opal?
Yes, the description has a list of routers that would work for home and travel. The best budget set up would be two Beryl AX.
@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 thank you for your reply I bought 2 Slate AX (AXT1800) I thought of going for 2 Beryl but I guess for my purpose Slate Ax would do a good job am I right?
The Slate AX is higher performance than the Beryl AX so it is a great choice.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 lovely you get a follow
Great video! Do I need an account with NordVPN to be connected? Or is it already included with the router?
Yes, you will need an account. You can use pretty much any VPN service that provides a configuration generator for routers. Alternatively you could run your own VPN Service from home so you don't have to pay the commercial VPN Provider: th-cam.com/video/LXbDg1v65Qs/w-d-xo.html
I’ve got my setup working fine at home, but when I’m traveling, the second one isn’t routing through my home Slate AXT1800 router. Instead, it’s showing the local network name, so it’s not connecting the way it should. I work in finance, so staying connected to my home router is really important-I try to avoid using random hotel or motel Wi-Fi. Could you help me figure out what’s going wrong and how to fix it? Thanks!
From the VPN Client page please click View Log and email me those errors: support@JustinPruett.com
Hi Justin, couple of question, 1) can someone set up the server in country A, and I set up the client in Country B ? (without leaking location, I have a VPN) or do I have to be in country A to set both up before leaving for country B 2) if we are on a work computer, wouldn't we still be getting internet from the local ISP ? hence that information can be available/retrieved
1. Yes, they can send you the configuration profile and you simply load it into your travel router. 2. I am not sure what you mean, yes the travel router needs Internet itself before it can connect to the Server Router back home.
2. If you are asking about the VPN, the VPN is on the Client Travel Router so no software is installed on the work device. The Travel Router basically creates a virtual cable back home.
Just switched to a new ISP and they don't provide a router. I'm using flint 2 for it and I have my slate ax for the trave router. How do I set up the port forwarding in this case?
That is the preferred way to do it! You can skip the Port Forwarding step since the router is already capable of receiving connections from the Internet when you enable the VPN Server.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 I sent you a donation. Thank you for the helpful videos 🙏
Thank you so much! 🙏 "Block Non-VPN Traffic" is no longer on by default in the newer firmware, I recommend turning it on: docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/faq/block_no_vpn_traffic/ reach out any time if you have questions.
So do the same way to turn vehicle off?
You should be able to turn it off as normal, but if not, yes.
So I connect Slate Ax to an Internet connection in Asia and when I connect to slate Ax it will give me my North American IP right ?
Yes, but keep in mind you cannot get passed the "Great Firewall" of China or any other countries that ban VPNs. You would need to hide your VPN within a "tunnel" to hide the packet types from the strict censorship.
awesome vid!!! i needed this!
Glad it helped you fix it! Thank you 🙏
Can I use 2 travel routers of the same model or will that cause a problem? I see you used to different models, just wanted to see if that's a requirement.
Yes, you can use two of the same routers. The description has a list of routers for Home and Travel. The best value is getting two Beryl AX routers.
Once the orange dot turns green you feel like you are... well, free!
Great to hear! One last recommendation is turning on "Block Non-VPN Traffic" which used to be enabled by default in previous firmware versions: docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/faq/block_no_vpn_traffic/
Thanks for the well-detailed video

Hi Justine Great guide. Thanks so much. I am having a slight issue I think it is a problem with port forwarding, I may have not setup correctly. It is asking to input too many information and I don't know what to put in there and Google is not helping. Can you please help with it,? It's HeyBroadband router Adtran: Source Zone: WAN? Destination Zone: LAN? Source IP: what to put here? Destination Device: I chose my GL from list Destination IP: it automatically copied when i selected device above 192.168.... Port: 51820 Protocol: UDP Local port 51820 Thanks for your help
Looks good, Source WAN, Destination LAN, Source IP BLANK (sometimes 0.0.0.0), rest sounds good. Be sure the Client Travel Router is connected to a second Internet connection, you cannot connect while already connected to the same Internet. Additional troubleshooting is here along with my email: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
Hi Justin, great guide. I have a question, If I want to access my Home Gli router from outside home while traveling. How would I do it ? Also can I install VPN client on my home Gli router and will it work ? Thanks :)
You can remotely access the router using GoodCloud. If you mean access the network, you can enable that with a checkbox setting in the VPN Server options. It is not recommended to run the VPN Client and VPN Server at the same time, it would be more efficient to simply run the VPN Client on the Client Travel Router than run it on the Home Server Router .
Thank you 🙏🏼
Glad it helped! 🙏
Hey Justin, awesome video. Do you think something like a company vpn would be able to detect and trace the location of the travel router? Do you think they would be able to tell something’s up? I just don’t want to take any risks haha
Yes it is possible to tell something is up, but much harder to prove. Although your IP Address would be the same, the speeds you achieve at home would be higher than while away and you can infer from that , that "something is up" but since the router itself is running the VPN there is no software on the work device they can disable to prove it.
Once I pasted the configuration using the DDNS domain from my home router( Flint) to my travel router( SlateAx) on Wireguard Client, it stays on “the client is starting, please wait” and never responds. Any tips on how to resolve this issue?
Are you using a second Internet connection for the Client? You cannot connect while already connected to the same Internet as the server. Other common issues are listed here with video links: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
Hey man, Can you use a phone cellular data still for your internet data and it will be okay?
For the server (Home) or the Client (away)? Fiber Optic is best for home. You can use anything for the Client but keep in mind your speeds will always be limited to your slowest connection.
if i use double router and with can i also use my companys vpn application because i cant setup router inside the company The other question is if i use this can crowdstrike catch me ? My company using crowdstrike.
You can think of the Travel Router as a virtual cable back to your house. Connecting to the Travel Router is like connecting to your home router. Because of this, no software is needed on your company device. Unfortunately I cannot answer questions about crowd strike since I do not use it. I am surprised companies still use it after that mass outage.
Justin. First of all thank you so much for such a detailed explanation on steps I'm pretty noob when it comes to networking, and asking a dumb question here. 1) Let's say im travelling to Thailand, While travelling with GLi Ax slate router, how does the router connect to your computer and where does it get plugged in. 2) Secondly will it connect to Thailand hotel wifi first and then make a connection to your local home router in Texas. In this case wouldnt the Thailand IP address be exposed 3) Thirdly how do I test that my computer is indeed connecting via my Texas home ip address
1. Ethernet is preferred, but you can also connect via WiFi. 2. Yes, connect the Travel Router using a personal device such as a phone before connecting your work device. In addition, turn on "Block Non-VPN Traffic" for extra protection. 3. You can see the dashboard change to green, but you can verify by comparing your IP Address to your Home IP Address.
Thanks for the answers. Regarding question2. Are you saying that the overseas IP address will be exposed for a short half a minute or so before it makes the connection. to the private VPN tunnel. Because even if I use phone Internet to connect to travel router it will still have the overseas IP address?
If the VPN is off, your remote IP is exposed. The first time you connect to the Internet at a new place may require you to login to the dashboard and connect to the Internet and then connect to the VPN. You may have to disable the VPN during this process, particularly for Captive Portals (see video on this channel) so that is why a personal device is recommended for the initial setup. "BLOCK NON-VPN TRAFFIC" will block the Internet while the VPN is disconnected to help keep you safe.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 thanks again Justin. So just to confirm- whenim overseas..use the travel router with my personal laptop first..make all the settings changes and VPN changes..and then connect the work laptop through the travel router. Is this understanding correct
Yes, after the first time it should auto-connect unless there is an issue.
Thank you babes🙇🏽♂️ quick, easy to follow, and got my fob battery changed in less than a minute. Thirty seconds, even💖 be well
Glad it helped you get it changed so quickly! Thank you! 🙏
why do we need the Opal? Is that specifically to support WireGuard? Why can we not use out ISP router?
The Beryl AX is the new recommended minimum, but you can use your ISP router or any other router as long as it supports WireGuard ®️. Brands such as GLiNet, TP Link, Asus, and Ubiquiti offer routers with WireGuard ®️ support, but please be mindful of the hardware limitations. The Opal is very old now but still outperforms some of the options from other brands due to the underlying hardware being superior. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
And what do you do if you dont have a public IP?
If you don't have a Public IP Address or cannot Port Forward, then you will likely consider using a Commercial VPN provider or using TailScale or ZeroTier. You will likely need RemoteToHome to help you though since it is still in Beta and complicated to complete the setup. See the Description for a Coupon Code
@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Bummer. But thank you for your swift response!
Yeah but I am sure they are working on making it easier! You bet, ask anything anytime!
FYI, I managed to sort the issue! The issue wasnt the public IP, it was me not knowing how to properly port forward. Thanks for your help, i wouldnt be able to set it up without your video
Hello, I am not seeing "remote access" under the applications tab
Depending on the firmware version it may simply be "Applications --> Dynamic DNS" as seen here: docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/interface_guide/ddns/
Thanks for the video! But I think there were a couple of steps that You have never mentioned which are very crucial to the process. First you need to specify you don't need to change your network mode but that you need to keep it in router mode otherwise if you select extender then you lose the VPN option. Second the wireguard servers IP address needs to be absolutely changed to something else than 10.0.0.X otherwise it just does not work. I have been there for hours before I realized that but now it's working like a charm. Thank you for the video it's still very interesting. I just think that you should have mentioned all of that. Also I think that the opal router, would immediately repeat internet once hooked up to a router with Etherner with no configuration, maybe that seemed obvious to you but for someone who's never done this those things were crucial in the process I found it to be.
Thank you for the feedback. Supplemental videos have been created for many of the common issues and I hope to make a new updated video soon. Thank you. justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
Is it too late to set this up? I left the country already and. Now i am stuck
Someone back home can set up the server and send you the file that you would then load into your Client Travel Router. If no one is home then you could try a commercial VPN provider such as WindScribe but not all companies allow it.
Let’s say I am having trouble setting up the DNS so it can automatically update the IP address. If I have a way of always knowing my home IP address when it changes, and just re-reset the VPN on wire guard manually every couple of weeks when the IP address updates, would that still work? Although it’s not efficient, theoretically, can it Still work?
Yes, but if you cannot use Dynamic DNS it may be an indicator that there is a problem with your Internet. I don't think anyone has ever had this issue. To be clear you enabled Dynamic DNS on the router that stays home?
@ thanks for your response. I enabled DNS on the router at home that is running an ethernet cable with my ISP. When I clicked DDNS test here is what GLI states with an error icon. “ the IP address from DDNS domain resolution is not the same as the WAN IP of the device. You need an Internet public IP address to use dynamic DNS.”
Oh okay, that is just a warning message because you are behind another router. While home or connected to the VPN you can verify Dynamic DNS here: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
Hi i bought the exact same tablet in Australia . I wanted to use it for a live rendition from a rear view car camera . It is quite hopeless , as the tablet cannot seem to keep up with the speed of the camera in real time . Should it be capable of doing that ?Any help would be greatly appreciated .
How is the camera connected? USB or WiFi 6?
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 What is wifi 6 ? sorry i'm a tech dinosaur.
WiFi is a newer WiFi standard. Do you have a model number for the camera?
I saw some other videos mentioning that you need to turn off your work laptops Bluetooth/WIFI (in order not to reveal your location). Does that even make sense? Isn't the point of the portable router to be a WIFI access point for the laptop to connect?
The reason this is suggested is that the nearby WiFi access points could be used to determine your location. Think about "Hotel Barcelona" being the WiFi name... But in reality, unless there is a physical switch, WiFi scanning is typically available while it is off anyways. So if your company is using advanced tracking software, the risk is very high.
hello. iv been using this abroad for about 2 days now and the issue im having is sometimes, it takes so long to start the vpn. It'll just say "The client is starting, please wait".
Does it eventually connect? Feel free to click View Log and email me the errors: support@JustinPruett.com
Can this work if I'm unable to physically connect travel router to work laptop? Usb ports are locked down. Any suggestions?
USB is not required, you can connect to the Travel Router via Ethernet or WiFi.
@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Hi Justin, thanks for the response. My company laptop is a hp probook with no ethernet port, a usb ethernet adapter would be blocked. I can't download any programmes or software, it's essentially heavily IT dept admin only, can't add a proxy. I am sceptical that the machine won't allow the travel router to load up. I have a nordvpn already for my personal devices.
You can use a personal device to set up the travel router then connect your work device to the router using WiFi.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 gonna try the single travel router method first like on your other video, travel router arriving shortly, if this works I owe you buddy 😂
Some companies allow Commercial VPN Services such as NordVPN and WindScribe, while others don't. If yours does not, then just get the second router and run your own Server as it will be your actual Home IP Address.
Thanks so much for the detailed explanation, Justin-you’re the best! Quick question: when setting this up, do the routers need to be on the same WiFi network, like in the video? Or can they be set up separately? For example, could someone set up one router at home and then I set up the other router from a different location, and later connect mine to the one at home?
They do not need to be in the same WiFi, in fact you cannot test while on the same Internet as the Server so using a second Internet connection is preferred. You can simply share the WireGuard ®️ Configuration File with whoever has the Client Travel Router. If you have multiple Client Travel Routers, be sure to make a new profile for each one since the file is unique.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the video I want to ask you if I enabled DDNS on the GL.iNet router, do I still need to enable it on the first router, for example, by taking the DDNS address and putting it somewhere in the first router's menu . Note that my ist router has a dynamic ip
DDNS should be enabled on the router that is acting as the Server (the one that stays home).
Thank you
Glad that helped! 🙏
Would it make sense to get 2x at1800s for a full home IP set up? Would the opal at home slow the internet speed capacity?
Yes, the description has a list of all the possible combinations. A Flint 2 with a Slate AX would be the fastest combination other than getting two Flint 2. Keep in mind your Internet is also a factor so be sure to get Fiber Optic Internet for the fastest speeds.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 So one could potentially run a zimaboard at home, install Wireguard to get a home IP and connect to it via Wireguard on a atx1800 while abroad?
Yes, WireGuard ®️ can be run on a Zima Board.
This is class Justin! Question: are there any alternatives to the pocket travel router that operate on battery? That way Im not "tethered" to needing an outlet when traveling, as long as I have some wifi source to connect it to.
The travel routers have standard USBC ports so you can power them using a USBC cable instead of the power adapter. Personally, I travel with this one because of the capacity and shape: amzn.to/4hyMiAg but if you want the battery included in the router there are some options for that too: amzn.to/4ek7TcK but I would rather have the battery separate and get more speed instead.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Thanks Justin. I bought both recommended routers and the portable battery through your links. one scenario I am not sure is answered: you say you cannot test this with both routers on the same wifi, which makes sense. Everything should work up until the last step where I try to enable the Wireguard CLIENT on the SlateAx, right? The client doesnt enable when connected to same ISP as the home router server. Given that, I'm not quite sure how to test on a public Wifi. When I connect via your "Captive Portal" video, would I then try to enable Wireguard client for the first time? Hope that makes sense. Want to make sure all other steps are squared away before I go to test publicly. Thanks again.
If your phone has HotSpot, that is typically the easiest way to test that everything is working. Just connect the Travel Router to your HotSpot (Make sure your phone is not connected to your Home WiFi or it may not use the cell phone Internet) then try connecting the VPN from the dashboard. Green is good, if it fails to connect after 2 minutes, click View Log and email me those errors.
What if your cell phone is logged into Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft Teams 24/7? Would you have to download the WireGuard app on your phone and permanently have the VPN on to disguise yourself?
Your phone can share your location via GPS and Cell Tower, you should get another phone or tablet without cell or GPS (and turn off location services).
After that you would just connect that tablet to your Travel Router
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Do I anable "Block Non-VPN Traffic" on the GLINET that comes with me on travel or do I enable it on the one that stays at home?
On the one that stays with you (the Client)
thank you so much life saver how can we use our home ip on our phone
You can download the WireGuard ®️ App on your phone then Scan the QR Code from the Server Router Dashboard instead of importing the Configuration File
Can we achive the same using static Ip address. Brief explanation will be really really helpful!!
Yes. Static IP Addresses are just IP Addresses that don't change. There is typically an additional fee for a Static IP Address as opposed to the usual Dynamic IP Address that changes from time to time. You can still Enable Dynamic DNS as an added backup should your IP Address ever change.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Tha nks! I have gone as far as setting up the WireGuard server but I am having trouble afterwards. In the VPN Dashboard, upon enabling the WireGuard toggle, the message reads "The client is starting, please wait". This message is not going away. I think I've made a mistake somewhere along the way but I can't figure it out. Is there a possibility of setting up a private call with you? Please let me know....
I try to answer every comment and email for free, but I do not offer 1 on 1 phone support. For that please see the description for a coupon code from RemoteToHome for 5% off. Otherwise I have common issues listed here as well as my email: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Okay thanks! So I do have a static IP address ,along with that Info I have the Gateway,up mask and Dns server details provided by my ISP. Here's my question. What do I need to do differently to set this up ? 1) Do I only add the details provided by my ISP in the internet> modify tab> static and fill in the info in my server VPN (Brume2) only or Client as well( Beryl Ax) 2) what about the configuration file : do we have to copy the Static IP for the endpoint instead of the Dynamic DNS in the VPN server. 3) And also keep the dynamic Dns toggle active if I have a static IP and the configuration file endpoint does not change to dynamic I still receive connecting orange light but it never does ....
1. That sounds like something your ISP is requiring? That is not standard, most people just plug the Internet cable into the WAN port . 2. If you disable Dynamic DNS you will have to use the static address, Yes.
Can u set them up where the slate is at home and the opal travels? And, can you have more than one travel connecting to the one at home?
Yes, but you should really consider the Beryl AX over the Opal. Be sure to create a new profile on the Server for each new Client Router you add. In other words, don't reuse the same configuration file since each one is supposed to be unique.
Kindly help me. I have a tplink archer c6 at home. Can i use it and just buy a new one for travel and configure it?
According to their website, the TP Link does not support WireGuard ®️, you would have to use the older OpenVPN technology. If you want better performance you should consider getting the Beryl AX if you are on a budget. Source: www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-c6/
If you want to use OpenVPN, the GLiNet router supports it, just keep in mind the speeds will be slower.
Justin! Thank you so much for this video. I watched several other videos that left out so many steps and had been frustrated for several days. I finally decided to watch this video and low-and-behold, now my Opal is able to connect to my Flint2 Router. And it was able to connect to the Flint through the same AT&T Router IP! I was trying to use my phone’s hotspot but that was not working. Thanks again fellow Dallasite!
Glad it helped! Thank you for sharing! If you ever run into problems please reach out!
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Hey Justin. After successfully connecting my Opal1200 to my Flint2 Router via WireGuard that's hardwired my AT&T ISP Router, I decided to get a backup Slate AX. I successfully setup and connected the Slate AX via WireGuard yet now the Opal won't connect. I should be able to have both of them connected at the same time, yes?
Did you generate a new configuration for the Slate AX? Each configuration file can only be used once but you can generate a new one and use both devices at once.
Yes I generated a new config file and uploaded that to the Slate AX. It has a different IP than the Opal.
have a question i recently went to starbucks and was able to connect to there internet, but not to the glinet vpn router client i was thinking since i had setup my vpn client that i would be able to connect to the vpn with the router but was not able to get the internet to work with glinet only the starbucks internet. any ideas why thanks
Did you try both methods? Does the GLiNet router provide Internet while the VPN and Block Non-VPN Traffic are disabled?
I thought this was gonna be way easier lmao. I think I'm cooked
I try to answer every comment and email for free, but if you would rather have it all done for you I have a coupon code JustinRR5 which will give you 5% off at remotetohome.io/ They can handle this setup as well as more advanced setups.
Thank you for this, the key that was broken in my door was actually bent and in no way would have come out without taking it all apart
I did everything but when I try to connect to my work laptop it says cannot connect to network. I do not have friends or family in the states to set up site to site. Any recommendations? Can I buy a residential IP address?
Sorry to hear that. There are other VPN Providers that offer Residential IP Addresses, but usually the cities are limited. One of the VPN Providers I use is WindScribe and they offer Residential IP Addresses in Dallas where I live. Here is a referral Link: windscribe.com/yo/0bzxgfqu and once signed up you will need to purchase a regular plan PLUS rent a Residential IP Address for an additional fee. Next you will download the WireGuard ®️ config from here: windscribe.com/getconfig/wireguard then load it into your Router as seen in the other video th-cam.com/video/LXbDg1v65Qs/w-d-xo.html feel free to email me if you get stuck
@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 I will try that and let you know how it goes. Fortunately, I can work anywhere in the United States with my job, and I do bounce around from state to state. So, having a Dallas IP address won't be a problem. Mexico, here I come! 😄
