    I bought this router, rented an Azure Ubuntu VM in Canada. Setup openvpn server, setup my router with openvpn client- my company doesn’t allow me to leave Canada.
    I bought a plane ticket to Thailand, the vpn has been working while I’m in Canada - let’s see what happens when I go to Thailand. I think it’s gonna work 💯

    Hey Justin, thanks for this video. Just a few quick questions that I haven’t seen asked in other comments:
    1.) If I connect my Work Laptop AND other Personal Devices to the same flash router, will the Work Laptop be able to see and use information from the other devices on the network?
    For example: if my Work Laptop is connected to the router and has it’s location services turned OFF… and my Personal iPhone is also connected to the same router with its location services turned ON… could the Work Laptop potentially use information from the iPhone to figure out it’s location?
    If so, is there a way to mitigate this?
    Would it make a difference to:
    A.) Use 5G for Work laptop, 2.4G for Personal Devices…?
    B.) Connect Work Laptop to router via Ethernet only and Personal Devices via WiFi only…?
    C.) Or would you suggest to not connect any Personal Devices to the router AT ALL while the Work Laptop is connected to it…?
    Would any of the above be overkill…?
    ------
    2.) I noticed a setting in the Admin Panel that says “Block all Non-VPN Traffic”. My understanding is that if the router should lose the VPN connection at any time, it will stop supplying internet altogether. This is what I want. Can you confirm if this is correct?
    ------
    3.) Is it necessary to run encrypted DNS with an active VPN? If I don’t, could my Work Laptop use DNS Server information to reveal its real location even while connected to VPN? I’ve been seeing online that encrypting your DNS while running a VPN simultaneously can cause leaks and issues. I followed your advice anyway and setup my DNS settings exactly the way you did in this video. I have not run into any issues. But just want to be proactive in making sure.
    Thank you in advance 🙏

      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1. It's kind of an open secret that MANY companies are "secretly" selling your personal information all of the time, including your GPS coordinates. Android and iOS have prompts to allow Location access to apps, but there are apps that need it for a legitimate purpose and they secretly sell the data at the same time. This is how some websites know your precise location before you even give it to them. Instead of your IP Address location coming from ARIN (the registry) they bought precise data from a broker. In addition, if you login to the same account on your work and personal device, the location could be shared between devices. On windows and Google this is a helpful feature, unless you are trying to turn it off.
      2. Yes, you want that enabled, it was on by default when I made the original video. I need to explain that toggle when I make the updated video. It also helps block some of the tricks used to reveal your location.
      3. I just prefer using CloudFlare as my DNS provider.

    • @Johnny-Michael
      @Johnny-Michael 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Justin, thanks for the quick reply.
      For question 1, I’m more so curious if the client devices running off the Beryl Router can see and collect information from each other? (Assuming VPN is active).
      I never sign in to any work stuff on my personal devices. But if I were to connect my iPhone/Laptop/etc… to the router while my work Laptop is also connected to it, would the Work Laptop be able to see and access information from those other devices on the router’s network?
      ------
      For question 3, Cloudflare is fine but to your knowledge is there any chance that encrypting the DNS could cause the VPN to fail?
      If I set the DNS Mode to Manual with Cloudflare instead of Encrypted with Cloudflare, will the Router’s Clients’ real locations still be shielded assuming VPN is active?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1. Yes, the Local IP Addresses and MAC Addresses will be visible to the other devices. This does not give your work device GPS access from your phone, but in a roundabout way it is possible as I described earlier through nefarious practices.
      3. Not that I know of

    This seriously is a wonderful tutorial and I love your knowledge and process here. You explain everything really well.
    I was curious about a handful of things
    1) Can you apply your own device VPN (Say work VPN) on top of this?
    2) Can you have a killswitch that prevents the Travel Router device from connecting to internet unless it has that VPN (through dallas) set up?
    3) How does the 30 mbps do for having video zoom calls for work?
    4) If I am not mistaken the process is (wifi locally -> travel router -> vpn -> $$$) and your local laptop or phone connects to the travel route (but the local wifi powers the travel routers internet, and is obfuscated by vpn).

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks you!
      1. Yes, but your company might have restrictions on the type of IP Address you are using. Most VPN services will provide a Commercial IP Address, if you need a Residential IP Address you typically have to pay more OR you can run the VPN Server yourself from home using this video: th-cam.com/video/LXbDg1v65Qs/w-d-xo.html
      2. Yes, from the Global VPN Settings page you can toggle "Block non-VPN traffic"
      3. This is actually a complicated topic, your video quality will be dependent on Download, Upload, and Latency. If you go to another country, try to get on Fiber Optic Internet to reduce your latency. 30mbps is fine, but the latency will cause lag if it is too high.
      4. I can't read number 4 from the app, will add another comment

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      4. Yes, you can run a VPN on the travel router and then your laptop can run a VPN as normal so you basically have a double VPN.

      Between the Solis and T-Mobile I usually have at least "dial-up" speeds for checking email. Many European countries have lots of free WiFi which is usually insecure, but not a problem once you add in the VPN from your travel router or from the VPN app on your phone such as nordvpn or windscribe.

    This is so helpful - truly creating unique helpful content! Are you able to connect your computer to your work’s vpn with this method and still show your location in the US? Or would you need to use the method of your other video with both routers?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Unfortunately it varies by company -- although in both videos your location could be the US, some companies actually check your IP Address to see if it is from the city you live in! So the other video works in more cases. If you already have a VPN account you could test this method first, otherwise the second router actually costs less than a VPN subscription anyways.

      No problem
      1) Yes, you will connect the travel router to the Internet, then Turn On the VPN for the location of your choice. The other router video on this channel explains how to run your own VPN if you prefer since not all companies allow you to use a commercial VPN provider.
      2) No, this only changes your IP Address, if your device has GPS or cell phone service then your location would still be exposed. Keep in mind that if you share any accounts between the devices such as logging into email on your laptop and cell phone, your cell phone could share your GPS coordinates with your laptop!

      I think you meant to comment on this video: th-cam.com/video/LXbDg1v65Qs/w-d-xo.html
      So for that video your Server Travel Router (The one that stays home) should have Internet.
      Some common problems are
      1. Plugging into the wrong port. The Ethernet cable should go from the ONT or a LAN port of the ISP router to the WAN port of the Server Travel Router.
      2. Conflicting Local IP Addresses. If your ISP router uses 10.0.0.X or 192.168.8.X as a local IP Address range, you will need to adjust the Server Travel Router to use a different range.
      You should verify that everything works before traveling since you won't be able to adjust settings unless you enable GoodCloud and have remote access to whatever your ISP router is as well.

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can look at the Local IP Address given to your Server Travel Router on the Internet page of the dashboard. If it is 10.0.0.X or 192.168.8.X then it will need to be changed. For the 10.0.0.X type it is changed from WireGuard ®️ and the other is changed in the actual GLiNet settings which will also mean you will have to access the dashboard from the new IP Address such as 192.168.7.1
      I should probably make a quick video for this... But the other quick video shows where you can view your IP Address th-cam.com/video/LzBa6KsfG9A/w-d-xo.html

    Great video and thank you so much for doing it quick question when you connect the device do you connect it with your own personal laptop or work laptop

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, for the initial setup you should use a personal device such as a laptop, phone, or tablet. After that you only need to use a personal device again to connect to any new WiFi networks such as a Hotel. Personally, I use my phone Hot Spot so the router just reconnects to that automatically.
      If your question is more about if this works with work devices, the answer is it varies by company. There are two videos on this channel, one for using a Commercial VPN provider such as NordVPN and the other is where you run your own server so you can use your actual Home IP Address. If allowed, the Commercial VPN provider typically provides the best speeds, but running your own server provides better ambiguity of your actual location.
      Keep in mind that if your work device has GPS or Cellular antennas, you will need to do more work to mask your location. That is not common though.

    So I am basically using a personal computer for work and my company had WireGuard installed as the VPN and the remote desktop.

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That zscaler app has full access to your phone, they might be able to see what cell tower you are connected to even without GPS. They could also see what WiFi networks are around you and determine your location that way as well. As for the actual connection since you are using a travel router that does the VPN connection they would not actually see the VPN from your phone but because that app has full access they can guess based on the networks in your vicinity. First I want to say thank you for making this video, Justin! Although I am still confused, I think once I watch it a few more times I will get the hang of it.
    Just to confirm, this method will allow me to connect to my home vpn when I am abroad? As in, if the IT team checks my IP it will display the one from my home? To access certain documents in my company I have to briefly switch to an internal VPN, will this switch reveal my true IP address?
    (Btw do you do online consultation sessions 😅)

      This is not the Home VPN video, this video uses a commercial VPN provider for when your employer only requires your IP Address to be from a certain location.
      If you want to use your actual Home IP Address, see this video: th-cam.com/video/LXbDg1v65Qs/w-d-xo.html
      Running a VPN from home allows you to use your actual home IP Address instead of a commercial VPN IP Address.

    Quick question: when you configure the client vpn through NordVPN, how does it obtain local dns?
    In addition, what is the difference between client and server configuration for the vpn?
    Like if we purchase dedicated static IP address in Dallas, that will be considered as server configuration?
    That would be great if you could share the training video. You are the best

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246

      While connected to the VPN you would be using their DNS server unless overridden from your device. While off the VPN the travel router has a DNS settings page you can configure.
      If you purchase a dedicated server IP Address you will need to select the server they assigned to you using the manual OpenVPN configuration

    So how do only need one router instead of two like your other video states? I work on a locked computer meaning i cant mess with any settings, so the router i use has to be setup so that all i have to do is plus in a ethernet and work away. If what im seeing is correct, then i only need to buy this one router, use my laptop to set it up, and then I can take it anywhere with me, plug into my work computer, and it will look like i working from home? Or is that the video with two routers? Thank you for the vids... Im just really slow with tech stuff.

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There are two different methods because in this video we are using a Commercial VPN Service which is blocked by some employers. In the video with 2 routers you are running the VPN Service which is not blocked by employers. If your employer allows Commercial VPNs, this is the easier method. In either case you are not modifying your work device or the remote Internet. When you run your own Server on your own home Internet you simply open a single port to allow the Client to connect remotely.

      NordVPN is a commercial VPN Service so while your IP Address would come from the location you choose, it would be marked as a Commercial address instead of a Residential Address. The other method with 2 routers will use your actual Home IP Address. Thank you, the process has changed a bit since this video was made, you have to use the credentials from the NordVPN website called "Service Credentials" instead of the usual username and password. There is also a bug in the firmware caused by this change, you will need to upgrade to the latest firmware then do a factory reset to prepare the router for the new "Service Credentials"

    I tried to follow your other video where I got an opal and slate router to use my home IP address but I could never get it to work.
    I then went on to follow this video with just the slate router because it seemed easier. I'm still stuck.
    I set up the slate router on my private PC and set the location to another US city(miami) to see if it would work. On the gli net admin page it did work as you said and my IP address changed. I checked my weather app to see if the location changed and it showed the weather for my current location, not miami. To me this indicated that the VPN did not change my location info just my IP address. any help regarding this?
    My biggest issue is I thought once I set everything up on my personal pcp that I could just connect to the gl-atx wifi and be good to go because my work laptop has blocked my ability to go to the 168... webpage to access the gli net admin panel. Also when I check my weather(location) on my work laptop it was my current location not miami. I will also note that once i connect to wifi on my work laptop i have to connect to the VPN already placed there by my job before i can access the internet. I am looking for the workaround that allows me to just connect my work laptop to a wifi without any further steps on that computer
    I am really concerned because I am traveling out of the country and my work laptop will not work on a wifi that is not a domestic IP address.
    Can you please help. I have been working on this issue for weeks and have sent many messages. As stated before i am willing to pay for your time because after buying 3 different routers, getting a nordvpn subscription and also getting a goodcloud and zerotier account i am still not accomplishing my goal.

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, both videos cover changing your IP Address to another location, but weather apps will use your GPS coordinates which are not altered by changing your IP Address.
      If you sign into any app on both your laptop and phone that shares your GPS coordinates, your laptop could also reveal your location that way. In addition there is an entire industry selling personal information, but that is a long discussion....
      I typically use a Hot Spot for my travel router then set the toggle switch to turn on or off the VPN. If you need to connect to public WiFi then you will need a second personal device to connect to 192.168.8.1 and login to the new WiFi.
      As far as the VPN, NordVPN is good but not all companies allow Commercial IP Addresses which is why the other video helps you setup your own Home VPN Server so you can use your actual Residential IP Address. If you are having problems it is likely caused by Port Forwarding issues and many ISP companies will help you with that step if you call them.
