    i've tried pine resin, although that wouldn't light very well.
    also, should bark generally be process into strips and then crushed or rolled between the hands?
    and are you using the pump technique? pressure has to be uniform throughout, yes?

      My preference is birch bark dust that I make by scraping a piece of BB into a small pile. Takes a spark very well. I have not tried the pump method.

      @@rowanadventures tried shavings from a log today. the sparks mostly missed and only caught twice, but i think on very thin shavings.
      any advice for working with cattail?

      @@JonathanBell-xl4dl The biggest issue with cattail is it burns faster than oxygen can get to it, do you have to keep moving or fluffing it if you want it to keep burning. It's not very practical on it's own. Try mixing it with something else like birch dust that you make by scraping birch bark with a knife.
