Hiya! I'm Calum, an amateur mountaineer and adventure enthusiast from Scotland.
This Mountain HITS HARD in Winter
Just because some mountains are easy peasy in summer conditions, doesn't mean they'll be easy in winter. Snow and Ice change the game... and this mountain is a different beast with a white dusting. ENJOY :)

Just discovered your channel, and what a way to start! Looking forward to watching more of your work.
Thanks for coming along on the journey!
Quite fancy a return to the Ben in winter. You've been nailing the winter weather lately Calum.
I've been fairly fortunate with the weather lately... I'm just trying to make the most of the winter will we have it. All the best for 2025 mate!
@calumpaterson123 You too bud. 👍🏻
Dong dong conditions Calum. 😎👌
Twas indeed! Have you been out much Kev?
@@calumpaterson123 Nah, no been oot since November. I commute to Edinburgh for work so I dinnae trust ma car. 😬😂 The joys of living in the Scottish Borders.
Thank mate brilliant
Yes again. What a wonderful day you had. Did that one when i was 15 in 1961. A long time ago😕
What a day indeed! Thanks for watching :) All the best for 2025.
Hi mate what company did you do this with? Thanks
Hi Barry. I used Adventure Peaks, who in turned used MAKALU ADVENTURE.
Wow! Those were some spectacular conditions, weren’t they? We were in the area in between Christmas and NY, weather abysmal and no snow on the mountains! Hope you have lots of fun with the new drone. Lovely video, Calum. 😊
Some of the best winter conditions I've experienced. It's amazing, what a few days and a dusting of snow can do to a mountain... totally transformed! All the best for 2025 :)
Belting channel mate, top notch footage. Just subscribed from a fellow TH-camr 😉👍
You are very kind. Thanks! All the best for 2025 :)
You too 😉👍
Brilliant video Callum. That’s very likely my next summit camp actually so handy to see how it’s looking a week or so out. Welcome to the drone club too. ATVB Robert
Cheers Robert. Hopefully there will be still be plenty of snow up there for you! Enjoy :)
Happy drone flying, buddy! Keep the epic videos coming 🙌🏼
I've been jealous of your Drone for years mate, so it was inevitable that I was going to get one eventually!
ah - a no nonsense tea for a no nonsense munro - beautifully put. wonderful winter conditions there - looked like a perfect scottish winters day. happy new year and off with a bang i see.
Start as we mean to go on Richard... I'm trying to manifest some excellent winter days this year! All the best for 2025 :)
OH Calum, you got to love the mountains in winter. Even with the cold, it's just a beautiful thing to see . Be safe, my friend and take careful steps and I will see you on the next adventure. Dwayne
Thanks so much Dwayne. Winter is my favourite time of year, and the cold is well worth baring for the spectacular views! See you on the next one, and wishing you all the best for 2025 :)
@calumpaterson123 same to you my friend. Dwayne
You always put out a great video and this one didn’t disappoint, views were so clear , look forward to your future videos with your drone. 👍🤗
Thanks so much Janice, that is very kind of you to say. All the best for 2025!
Get yourself a pair of good microspikes Callum. I was up beinn Ime yesterday and they were invaluable, i had a second pair with me that i loaned to someone who was struggling. Maybe get them for a good price in a sale
Do you have any recommendations? I've definitely been swayed to pick up a set. All the best for 2025 Alistair :)
@calumpaterson123 I have the Canadian brand Hillsound. The zigzag section barely scraped the paint on them. Certainly seem durable.
I've got some Unigears.
Superb views from the top 🙂👍❄️
Thanks so much. Wish you all the best for 2025 :)
This brought back absolutely loads of memories for me. I started rock climbing at The Whangie in the early 80s. I moved to Fort William in the mid 90s and I haven't been back there since. I think I might have to go for a wee wander next time I'm passing 😊
I'm so delighted for you Mack. I hope the next time you are down, you get to rekindle those memories in real life. Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic video calum. Nice one 👍
Glad you enjoyed it :)
A fine day, stunning views. I did this years back on a very hot day with a very hot hangover!
Cheers very much for watching :)
Fantastic film Calum...such an amazing part of the country and the inversion conditions just made it even more spectacular.!. All the best for Christmas and hope you and yours have a guid New Year!🎄
Couldn't agree more! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Special conditions at a Special place.
Totally agree, thanks for watching :)
Great wee video 🏔🏔
Glad you enjoyed it :)
I last did the Arrochar Alps in September, watching the sun rise on the Cobbler is always an amazing view. I'm planning to go again sometime in January to climb in the snow. Here's hopeing it will be as good has it looks in your video.
Have fun! The Arrochar Alps are a wonderful place regardless of the time of year.
Had so many happy memories in that glen, from horrible conditions to the very best weather you could wish for. Last time was in January doing a repeat of Ime in full winter conditions, that was amazing. Never done the spearhead though but I reckon if I repeat the munro I'd really consider that route, bit more spicier than the route from Bealach a Maim
Thanks for watching :)
Stunning day. If only Scotland's weather was always as good 😅. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Got lost up there one fine sunny day😌 your day 💯👍👍
It's easy to get lost in such a magnificent environment. Thanks for watching :)
I loved looking down on the fog in the valley I just hoofed through. Time for a brew!. Or, if in France, a touch of Merlot.
Merlot or Tea... it's a tough choice! Thanks for watching Chris :)
Hi there @calumpaterson123 , I found your channel while searching for Mera peak stuff and have now watched a few more of your vids. Great channel 🎉 I have now booked to go with Makalu adventure off the back of your recommendation. I have a quick question about money/payment on the trek. What’s the best way to pay for the wifi/water/showers etc? Keep up the good work, stay safe and have a lovely Christmas 🎄🎅🏼 Ps. We’re still waiting of the gear list vid. 😜
You are very kind, thank you! I really do hope you enjoy MERA! Makalu Adventure are really great, I'm currently planning my next expedition with them.. which will be revealed in the new year. I am planning on doing a Kit Video, the problem is trying to wrangle all the kit together HAHA!
Aye good decision. Still a cracking mountaineering day you both had. 😎 Yip I was very jealous of the snowy conditions everyone had whilst I was at work. 😏
A cracking day indeed Kev. Sorry you missed out last week... I'm sure everyone will be keeping there fingers crossed for more days this, this winter. ATB!
Very nice video and beautifully presented! Fantastic landscape! Enjoyed watching! Thank you for sharing! Done myself few videos for my travel channel if you want to have a look at it.....thank you! New SUBSCRIBER!
Thanks very much for watching pal :)
Great film Calum. I get that it was disappointing not to complete the planned activities given that you’d travelled and had the perfect conditions, but summiting a spectacular Munro like CMD can only be called a success in my book. I strongly agree that it is important to stop if things don’t feel right, even if you’re not sure why. There’ll be other opportunities. In terms of the video, thanks for sharing those spectacular views.
Thanks for watching :) Totally agree... the mountains will be there for us in the future, and we should always listen to our bodies.
Epic conditons and scenes!
Epic indeed! Thanks for watching :)
@calumpaterson123 👍🙂
Hello Calum , that was some beautiful scenery. snowy mountains are just awesome. Dwayne
Thanks so much Dwayne. You are very kind. All the best!

Wow... what a lovely comment. That is very lovely of you to say. Thanks again :)
You hit there 'a sense of place'. What a good day you had.
A cracking day out, for sure! Cheers for watching :)
Thank you for posting this. 1) Because the views were spectacular and it would have been a shame if you'd not shared them! 2) Because on FB, Munro bagging seems to have become a competition for some with comments such as "less motivated" and "you're just scared" being thrown at folks for making sensible, cautious decisions and sharing sensible, cautious advice. Your video shows that it's OK to change your plans. It's OK to admit when things just don't feel right. And nobody should be judged for making a decision that's the right one for them. There's no room for egos on the hills. You had a stunning day in the mountains and both made it home safely to enjoy further days in the hills. Keep climbing!
Thanks so much for this comment! I really appreciate it. You are totally right, everyone's experience is valid and valuable. Let's keep lifting others up, and not bringing them down. ATB x
Thanks for sharing this. Been watching your channel for a couple of months now. How long did it take you guys?
Cheers very much pal :) From the North Face Car Park to the summit of Carn Mor Dearg took us about 4 hours on this particular day... which is about an hour longer than we should have taken.
Wise decision Calum, common sense over bagging and pride. Great guidance as a TH-cam walker 👍🏻
That's very kind of you to say. Cheers!
Even though turning back is the right thing to do it still stings, good choice though once you'd gone past your time limit.
It really does sting doesn't it?! However, you are right... it was the correct decision. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for another great video Calum. And thank you for your honesty. It gives me great reassurance that the (many) times I've turned back halfway up a mountain or bailed out before heading for the second summit of a hike, that I've done it out of understanding and acknowledging my limitations. As one who's just started hiking the higher mountains late in life at 67 you and your fellow TH-cam vloggers give me such valuable information - thanks again. BTW your filming is excellent showing such great scenery, how can one not be impressed. ATB Karl form Denmark
You are most welcome, and thank you for your kind comment! Good for you for getting out into the bigger mountains... you are never too old to achieve amazing things! Do you have any big adventures planned?
@@calumpaterson123 Sorry for the late answer. Nothing planned just yet, but I hope to get over sometime in March next year. Probably going to attempt "the ones that got away" as in the ones where I bailed out before hiking up the second summit. Being able to return to Scotland again and again really is a great adventure already. ATB Karl
Crackin' weather and a good decision. Well done!
Cheers very much pal :)
I appreciated your bleather. Beautiful skies. Happy climbing. JMO.
I do love a gab... thanks for watching :)
And remember "the Incident" may occur shortly after the decision, as soon as everyone relaxes. In the mountains, usually on the descent, in boats just after you decide to return! Bikes and skiers never have "one last run", its chilled return to base and see how it goes.
Hi Calum, Good decision 👍 It's important to be honest with your walking partner(s) on how you are feeling or going on the day. Safety first every time particularly on these short winter days. Well done... and what a stunning day you both had. Cheers
Cheers Charlie. I totally agree, it's good to be honest and more importantly, it's good to be around people that you can be honest with. I'm sure we'll get another go the CMD Arete before winter is finished.
Great video that I wouldn't rank among the best, I'd rank it thee best. Even if one person learns the importance of when to turn back from it,. it will all be worth it. It's the most important lesson there is to learn.
You are extremely kind, thank you!
I so appreciate you sharing this. Always listen to your instinct! And good that you and your friend can be so honest with one another, look after each other! ❤
I appreciate you for watching Nathalie. Thanks again :)
When you experience that undefinable, indescribable inner feeling that all is not right you MUST obey it. Oddly enough it won’t happen often (in over 40 years of mountaineering it’s happened to me very only twice that I recall, once at the very summit it happened to you), but it will only come from experience, knowing what you have coped with or not in the past. This is simplifying matters somewhat but you did exactly the correct thing. Many have ignored the inner voice and gotten into trouble or worse. Well done.
Totally agree, and likewise, I've not had many experiences where that has happened. I wanted to be a supportive friend, and I couldn't have gone across the ridge on my own, knowing that my pal wasn't feeling great. I'm sure there will be another opportunity to go across the arete this winter.
Great breakdown of your winter kit! It’s always helpful to see how others prep for Scotland’s cold conditions. Your attention to layering and what’s in your pack is super practical - definitely gave me some ideas for my own setup. Thanks for sharing! 👌
@@TalesFromAbroad-SJ cheers very much! I’m glad you found it useful
I would always carry a knife. Always handy. I would bring a cookset to be able to boil water. Useful if you need to melt snow in an emergency situation.
I rate Scottish makes tbh I have 2 keela munro and find tekko merino socks best I found in 40 years 😂
Thanks David. I've never heard of Teko Socks... I'll need to check them out. I tried a Keela Baselayer years ago and really didn't like it, but I'm guessing they've probably made significant improvements since then. Thanks for watching :)
