A channel featuring music apps (my own, and others that I like), sound design, and music tech in general.
Guitar Gear Demos: Certano Palm Benders
Usually on this channel I demo apps, synths and stuff like that, but I thought this might be a nice change. Maybe it should be a separate channel, but as it’s actually me playing and my channel, I figured, why not? I hope you don't mind.
About this video...
Often with string benders on a guitar, the aim is to mimic a pedal steel and I do that. I do that a lot! But...
More recently, I’ve been working on a technique where I’m trying to get a slide type sound using the string benders instead of a slide. I’d love to be able to play slide guitar, but I just can’t get to grips with it, hence this dubious quest - very much a "work in progress".
Some technical details for those interested…
Guitar is a heavily customised Fender Duo-Sonic, tuned EBEABE low to high (think DADGAD up a tone) with a half-step bend on the A and a full tone on the top B.
I’ve used a lot of string benders (mostly palm-operated) over the years and the Certano is by far my hands down (ho ho) favourite.
Signal chain is guitar - curly lead (very important) - Great Eastern FX Small Speaker Overdrive - Strymon Volante - Strymon Iridium - recording interface.
I’m using the excellent Small Speaker Overdrive (SSO) to add a little grit and presence and the Iridium is on a totally clean setting (Round amp / stock Cab B). The SSO is really sensitive to picking dynamics, just like a small speaker valve amp and I was trying to get a Princeton on the edge of breakup type vibe for this little noodle.
I've used the Volante for a bit of spring reverb and a touch of tape delay. I also used the “sound on sound” feature to set up the background drone.
Hope you like the noodle!
Fun fact: The tune (if you can call it that) was originally played on a pedal steel and nearly got used in a film. They wanted something that "sounded like Paris Texas" but I think they actually did use Ry Cooder instead in the end, so there you go.

touchscaper for iPad + Synthetic Materials for KONTAKT
มุมมอง 8963 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a fun little realtime jam with touchscaper for iPad controlling a KONTAKT multi via MIDI with 3 instances of the Synthetic Materials library. I've used the "Slow Saw Swell" and "Patiently Waiting Pad" snapshots layered for the main instrument pad sound and for the ribbon, I used a slightly tweaked version of the "Crystal Breath" snapshot. Vertical motion is mapped to expression / CC11. A...
touchscaper "MODALAR" jam #1 (feat. ARGON8 + COBALT8)
มุมมอง 9043 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a little touchscaper jam over a very familiar chord progression! Featuring the COBALT8 and ARGON8 synths by @ModalElectronics Both synths are set up to receive MPE / polyphonic aftertouch with vertical touchscaper movements ( Y) sent to the ARGON8 (filter cutoff), and horizontal ( X) going to the COBALT8 (AEG sus). I've also assigned an additional controller to the ARGON8 distortion for ...
Waverley Tables 1.1 update - new "sustained" sounds

touchscaper cinematic noodle (feat Pure Piano + Waverley XL)
มุมมอง 8843 ปีที่แล้ว
Just wanted to do one more little demo with the new "touch" keyboard in touchscaper (coming very soon) but this time, showing how the Waverley XL sounds can be used as supportive pads to your main instrument - in this case Pure Piano again. I'm using two XL instances with very long attack and decay times to create an almost orchestral type accompaniment that (I hope you agree) doesn't get in th...
touchscaper - tap to toggle MIDI CC between min and max value
มุมมอง 3233 ปีที่แล้ว
I've added a new feature to the MIDI controllers that allows you to tap the control to toggle between the minimum and maximum value. This is useful for MIDI controllers that aren't "continuous" such as sustain pedals or other switch type toggles. In this quick demo, I've mapped a controller to CC64 (damper / sustain pedal) and show how it basically switches sustain on or off when you move eithe...
touchscaper - new experimental "touch" keyboard preview (feat. Pure Piano)
มุมมอง 8433 ปีที่แล้ว
Please note - this is a pre-release demo of a new touchscaper feature I'm working on. The new "touch" keyboard is a cross between the existing ribbon and main playing surface, the big difference being, you can control the velocity of the notes depending on the vertical position of your touches - higher up = louder. As with the other playing surfaces, notes are taken from the current chord or sc...
touchscaper + ARGON8M - random(ish) arp progression
มุมมอง 6773 ปีที่แล้ว
Literally my first messing about session with the ARGON8M using touchscaper to drive one of the factory presets - Transistor Arp. As touchscaper moves through my infamous mostly M7s chord progression, new notes are sent to the ARGON8M based on the current chord and the octave range of the held touch point - centre low notes, outer rings correspond to increasingly higher octaves. This creates a ...
touchscaper for iPad + Modal Electronics COBALT8 - MPE demo #1
มุมมอง 2.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's my first attempt at getting touchscaper to control the COBALT8 via MPE MIDI. It was really easy to set up, thanks to the Modal deep dive video. The touchscaper app sends aftertouch on channels 2-9 (master channel 1) and vertical movement is mapped to aftertouch which is controlling filter cutoff on the COBALT8. Lots more interesting stuff you can do, but this is test number 1 after all, ...
Failed media composer's "emotional cue" (feat. Pure Piano)
มุมมอง 5453 ปีที่แล้ว
I haven't always developed music apps. In one of several previous lives, I'm also a failed media composer. But that's not what this little video is about. Pure Piano is an amazing new sampled instrument that I think sounds absolutely beautiful. After purchasing the app and spending a few minutes twiddling the settings, I gravitated towards this combo of the mellow and intimate voices - you can ...
touchscaper + moodunits "piano player" demo
มุมมอง 4733 ปีที่แล้ว
Whilst nosing around idly on an iOS music forum (as you do) someone was asking about emulating a piano player in a semi random way, the way an actual piano player might improvise chord inversions - or at least, that was my interpretation of the question. Anyway... I had a little go with my go-to favourite chord progression. Hosted in AUM, touchscaper (via IAA / MIDI) is controlling a moodunits ...
Waverley XL - Peachy lead sounds
มุมมอง 8433 ปีที่แล้ว
As you probably know by now, I'm working on a collection of new sample-based instruments for iOS called Waverley XL. As you also probably know, I tend to like designing pad type sounds, but I wanted XL to include some cool lead sounds too. They're monophonic (as a good synth lead sound should be) and have a little legato glide. I recorded one of my all-time favourite keyboard parts into GarageB...
Waverley XL (x2) touchscaper jam
มุมมอง 7483 ปีที่แล้ว
Waverley XL is a new collection of sample-based instruments I'm working on. Coming soon! Here's a couple of my favourite instruments controlled with the touchscaper sequencer. I'm also using Nembrini Audio's wonderful Delay3000 to process touchscaper's built-in drums and also some Eventide Blackhole reverb on one of the XL instances. I screen record most of my test "noodle" sessions (in case so...
Waverley XL for iPad - coming soon...
มุมมอง 6293 ปีที่แล้ว
More details coming soon. This is just a little taster of one of my favourite instruments in Waverley XL. Running in GarageBand (Waverley XL is AUv3 only) I'm just hitting a few random notes with the sustain pedal down to create an atmospheric drone. Hope you like it!

What happened to this app? No longer in app store
It should still be there. Where are you based? Here's a link for the UK - you might need to change the country ID if you're not UK. apps.apple.com/gb/app/touchscaper/id1250344299
Your site is no longer available. How is it possible to download the extra sounds? Is there somewhere else to download it from?Thank You
Is there anyone who can show me step by step how this is done? I've experimented with it but no luck in getting this same affect so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Absolutely beautiful.
Is there any way to use Touchscaper to only send modulation to your hardware/vsts ? While I love that I can play chords with the app, sometimes I might have a progression going in my DAW and I just wanna add some MPE movement to it
This is Feb 2024 and recently bought must of your apps including this. How did I not know about this brilliant app before? It’s absolutely brilliant and you my friend are very clever 😁 Is there any hope that you might make this AUv3?
Thanks for the kind words and sorry about the extremely late reply. Much as I would like to make touchscaper AUv3, it's currently not feasible for various technical reasons. It's an Apple thing, I'm afraid. Sorry about that. -Rob
@@robjacksonmusic Thanks for getting back, I’ve watched your videos and have been using touchscaper as inter app in AUM as you described so all is good 👍 I must say that I love all of your apps, you’re a very talented developer 👏
Fantastic deep dive into several features, thank you!
I just found this, 3 years later 😄 I hope you kept going because this is great and really opened up how to use the sequencer. I plan on doing this speed and style for a my upcoming new channel. Thank you!
What an amazing and beautiful app you created here - absolutely astonishing! Thank you Sir.
Hey there Rob... Thank you for creating such an awesome app. It is like a dream come true for me. I am a bit frustrated with the midi stuff though. I still cant work out what instrument B does? Also I have a problem with the sound from instrument A needing to be switched on constantly. I cannot find any sync settings either so I cannot use the sequencer with my daw effectively. Also it would be much better if I could send midi to more than one destination at once. Other than that i love the sound and the radar touch interface is awesome. One other thing that would make this app even better would be a way to save the whole lot as a patch or scene. The saving is a bit of a mess and these few issues make it a bit scary to use live. I really appreciate you trying to explain it in your videos despite not feeling comfortable with it. Keep up the good work. You are onto something ground breaking.
Rob, what's the difference between this app and Guitarscaper?
Absolutely brillant and intuitive apps!! 👏🏻 bravo!! Very good work! 🤩🤩
I’m just wondering how 6 years went by without me knowing about this app…. Amazing.
Does this allow different inversions of chords? Thanks :)
Sorry, nope. It just kinda does its own thing, mostly driven by probability / where you place your fingers.
@@waverleyinstruments Thanks for the prompt response (And on such an old video, no less ;) ). I think I understand the performance aspect of the app (only bought it an our ago), but this video shows the sequenced aspects which are a whole different thing, no? By adding inversions, those chords could be played in a manor much more akin to how a real player would play i.e in close clusters. Not that there aren't occasions where having everything in 1st inversion isn't the right choice. But for all the occasions when it isn't... ;)
i bought Waverley tables on its own .. and i cannot load it in no one daw as AUV3 its not recognized do i need to buy moodunits in order to load it ?
Hi there. No, you don't need to buy moodunits as Waverley Tables is a totally separate / independent app. The most common fix when an Audio Unit isn't showing up is to switch the device off and on again. You also need to have run the Waverley Tables app at least once so it registers. Hope this helps.
@@robjacksonmusic ok thanks
beautiful app <3 i bought both moodscaper adn piano scaper and will buy all other apps aswell. it would be awesome to have a pc version that i can connect with fl studio or live
Many thanks for the kind words and encouragement - much appreciated! I'm afraid the 'scaper apps are iOS only for the foreseeable future though - sorry about that.
No sound from AniMoog,,,,,,set to MPE....but not hearing in Touchscaper....Thank You
Hello. How unlock Main instrumet (B) and Sequencer synth (B)???
Sorry this is a bit confusing in the UI. It just means that the main instrument (A and B) or the sequencer (A and B) can only be internal *or* MIDI, not a mixture of both. You can still send A and B to different MIDI destinations though but you can't mix and match, i.e. use internal sounds for A and MIDI for B, for example. Hope that helps.

@@robjacksonmusic Thank you very much. Your tutorial is great. P.S. my english is bad ))))
Bravo et merci pour votre travail.
Wundervoll
Beautifully done. Quite different from the other Certano demos
Tutorial 🙏 please
There are days where I can not even make something this beautiful on a full DAW setup. touchscaper and you Sir are awesome.
Unfortunately now I can only select Instrument A, B stays locked! How can I put it to work again? Second problem: I can select Animoog via Midi and MPE, but I don’t hear any sound anymore. I already made a fresh install of Touchscaper😢 can you help me out please?
Hi Johan. Sorry it's a little confusing. B is locked because you can't split A and B between internal and external MIDI sounds, so it's an either / or thing. You can assign A and B separately via MIDI though. For Animoog, it maybe a setting in Animoog itself. If it's the original Animoog, I seem to recall it was a bit fiddly getting it to recognise external MIDI - it's on a settings tab if memory serves - sorry, haven't used Animoog in a couple of years!
@@robjacksonmusic Thanks Rob, for answering me so quickly, I’ll give you an update when/if I can fix it now ;)
@@robjacksonmusic 😢I still don’t see how I can get instrument B from that 😖slot… In your videos it’s always usable…? Maybe I have to reset all? A reinstall doesn’t fix the problem (at first start I could select B) please help🙄
This video would have been longer but the MIDI police interrupted, still great stuff here Rob and I will re-test my setup with what I know now.
This was really a pleasure to watch and listen to, you sound like a humble funny guy. My issues with MIDI reach outside the iPad as I want to drive synths inside my DAW from the app and had no complete success yet so I will watch the other video and ask away if I am still stuck. I did create a video for my #synthember series using touchscaper and it was a blast to create. Thank you for your app.
Blackhole makes everything great but to be honest your app and your skills made this superb to begin with. I can't wait to noodle with touchscaper again!
What a great jam, loving the sounds!
I just found your app this week and made a first video with it, but what you show here means I have yet a lot to learn. I will be on it again soon. Thanks for this demo!
Thanks! You made me smiling with this nice video and all the good tips for using Touchscaper :)
Just bought this after spotting someone on YT playing this with their Kordbot. What a fantastic looking and expressive program. Future Music, my usual source for what's happening, should do a review. As for famous users - how long's a piece of string? I'd guess Tim Shoebridge - love his patches for the Minilogue XD. For someone who doesn't like talking on vids, you have a very calming voice. Very informative. As for your adhoc explaination of MPE, its the best i've heard.
How were you able to send midi out of your iPad into you computer/DAW to play Kontakt? Is your system Mac or PC?
bump?
Amazing & Inspirational: very good! Thanks
Nice! Can trigger by midi controller or only by fingers?
I got this app a few days ago. Very relaxing to play and bliss out from. I wish I could make this. What are.the other apps being used. If you could give a little explanation of how you did it that would be great , in what whatever small way you may choose. It’s a master piece and the best one of yours I have heard imho. Thanks. Edit: I just saw what you wrote in description. Nb: I’m really loving the sounds therapeutically. Well done and I’m sure this brought a lot a of peace of mind to many people. I am very happy with my purchase which is well worth the price. ❤️❤️❤️🎵🎶🎵🎶❤️❤️❤️
Too deceptive for me. I want to see what the presets on TS are by it’s self.
Very nice music 🎵🎶🎵💕🎵🎶🎵
Great sounds man. Lovely tracks.
I can see and hear devo here. 🎵🔥🎵🔥🎵🔥🎵🔥

Recording midi from touchscaper to aum to or cubase doesn't record properly, even if used atom or midi roll ,all ways glich if u can make an option inside touchscaper will be great n pretty usefull
touchscaper does not hear anyy sound from animoog after setting up as in the video. ipados 15.5
You not only sold me on Moodunits, but on touchscaper as well ;)
MIDI is not confusing. Like a guy told me when I looked at a 48 channel FOH console and said Holy sh*t! How do you know what's what? He put the heel of his hands down on either side of one channel and said "It's just this. 48 times." MIDI is the same thing. Dave and the engineering crew at Sequential explained it to us sales and product guys by drawing how one channel worked. 128 "assignable things" in an ascending row, each "thing" with 128 "values". 16 times. With a few system-wide bits on the front end. I see this comment a lot in the app world. What would you guys have done when it was all refrigerator racks of hardware? It's not nearly as complicated as code. Anyway, thanks as always for the vid and the Animoog! And the App!
Great demo. All gear, no fiddly chat or fingers. Aside - in my time at ne synth company years ago a friend called me. Said he needed a part. Fedex international, attn the cruise line in Belize or somewhere down there. I asked him what the... who are you playing with and he wouldn't tell me for fear I'd bogart the part. I said C'mon, man. I might laugh, but I'm aprofessional. He finally said he was on a Jacuzzi Jazz cruise with Kenny G. I sent him the part. I did laugh, though.
