  • Even though I'm a movie girl, the Hulu Series "The Other Black Girl" has got my attention. But I was triggered about 15 minutes in 😅 So we're doing a quick recap on Episode 1 because I have some thoughts.
    Spoiler Alert I don't reveal anything in this episode about the end of the series, but I do talk about the first Episode so maybe watch that first before listening to me .

    I'm so glad to see you back! Being in corporate spaces for over 20 years, I've realized that your co-workers are not your friends. I've watched the series and I enjoyed it, but it also reminded me to be mindful of creating bonds with boundaries with black folks.

    Something i notice when watching the show is how Nella’s name comes from a Black woman author who wrote during the Harlem Renaissance era. And Nella in this show works at a book publishing company. (Don’t mind me over analyzing lol).

    4 eps in (but not done!!) and I gotta say, Nella is really unsure of her identity so far. She needs another person to affirm what's cool, what's pretty, obviously what's Black, what's a good idea, etc. All the spunk none of the confidence in herself. Like they left this other half empty so they could character develop it before our eyes, in positive and negative ways! Definitely some stumbles before she learns to walk.

    • @TiffanyByrdHarrison
      @TiffanyByrdHarrison  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      So true! you said this so well. It’s the constant need for validation and her identity for me. And that was so easily exploited, which is why you get Nella’s confidence, wavering over and over again.

    I was definitiely triggered. I had to take a break. But its also exhausting to not be able to trust people too. Sometimes you can make alliances in your industry or other departments. But not your direct office/ company. We do need a space to vent or talk to others, we are human after all.

    Literally putting off watching the show cuz 1. The book was so good I'm terrified the adaptation would take away from it and 2. BECAUSE THE BOOK WAS SO SCARY. 😅 been a hot minute since a book caused that much..dread and foreboding. So good.

    I love your analysis of this show! I've had to learn the hard way in the workplace that all skinfolk ain't kinfolk and coworkers are NOT your friends. I was promoted to a management role this past summer at work and the relationship dynamic I had with an older black woman that I got along with completely changed and that rapport we had was gone and I felt betrayed 💔. This is why I empathize with Nella, especially when she's thrown under the bus by Hazel.

  • @tanyasingstoo

    I enjoyed the series and had my laughs as I am often in a situation where I'm the 'only black woman' in the office or at the higher levels of executive leadership. Reminds me of a Key & Peele comedy sketch around this phenomenon of when the 'only black guy' or the 'only Black girl' is no longer the ONLY black guy/girl and what that looks like and feels like. You have to laugh to keep from crying because it really 'is' a 'thing.' Things become complex when one of the 'sistah's' is holding space in a way where she is more unapologetically 'black' then the other 'sista' and what that can mean for 'both' of them and how it change the dynamic in the office space and the relationships with your white peers. It's a delicate dance. Thanks Tiffany for sharing your thoughts on the office politics and the nuance that exists when another Black woman/man comes into that space. And I love your hair! Can't take my eyes off it! I was super glad to see that in this series both NELLA and HAZEL donned the natural hairstyles...too cool.

    Tiffany, I love the way you breakdown movies and shows in such a simple yet profound way.
    I was just talking to my hisband and a friend about CHANGING myself so as to not come across threatening or aggressive or like a know-it-all. (All comments i have heard before). Code switching is mentally EXHAUSTING - Continuing to suppress and deny who I am so as to make people comfortable. This series is triggering because of how eerily accurate it is. Thank you for this space and sharing your thoughts and insight.

    I started watching the series and had to jump on this video! The story is fascinating on many levels because Nella seems to have a background that would have prepared her for the space she’s in - especially in the way that they contrast her with Malaika in terms of her mannerisms and choice of partner - but she’s such a fish out of water it almost doesn’t make sense. I’m really curious to finish the series and to read the book and see how it approaches the characters.

    I was instantly reeled in on the show the first watch. I tried to read the book, but it gave me a headache lmao. I do think some of the writing in this show is a little shaky and comes off awkward, but I enjoy the acting from the characters. Even though it may come off as exaggerated, I do think this is a pretty decent depiction of being a Black woman in predominantly yt spaces.
    Side note: Malaika is a good friend. I do think sis can come off as being obsessive, however she wants the best for Nella. I need to finish this show; I have four episodes left 😭

    • @TiffanyByrdHarrison
      @TiffanyByrdHarrison  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I completely agree. The acting is top notch, but there is some writing that’s a little bit clunky. I think in trying to adopt a book that’s over hundreds of pages down to a TV series. That’s actionable and digestible can be very difficult.
      Malaika was aggressive, but she reminds me of that “New York nice” where folks will look out for you and cuss you out at the same time.

    I just started watching this! It is so interesting! I really resonate with the quote about changing ourselves. I realized this about myself some years back & how exhausting it was. I’m finally giving it a chance and I already regret it. I read the book first and the book was AMAZING. They’ve tried to over-creepy it on tv for no reason and just snatched the authenticity of the story itself replacing it was a sad attempt at satire and “wokeness”, over dramatizing a oh but too familiar plight that is actually getting exhausting.

    Great review of a great episode. The battle of being yourself vs white corporate America is a challenge with no correct answer. I like how this episode displays a moment that most still have the “stripe” from. Trusting too soon without people earning it. Esp when you the only black person in corporate America (been there). I am excited to see the twist and the self journey Nella takes in the show.

    Thank you for posting this. After watching two episodes, I posted to my Facebook account “Is anyone besides me triggered by the corporate workplace dynamics in The Other Black Girl?” The only response I got was “can’t watch it. I’m still recovering from my previous job“ LOL. And you’re so right about the ways in which we change just micro pieces of our selves until we get to the place where we barely recognize our own selves. At least, that’s how it was for me. It’s wild.

    I watched the whole season. You are right about the show being relatable to what a lot of black women have to face in the work place. It's funny how that we always have to be careful of what we say and second guess if we should really say what's on our mind the way that most white people do. It's sad to say, but we really can't be ourselves. I like the tip you shared about being careful with who you trust and share your dreams with. I liked it when you talked about how we try to change ourselves just to fit in.

    when I saw the commercial I knew this was going to be something I was interested in watching. I looked up what the book was about and it really opened my eyes to things i had no idea went on in a corporate workplace. I’ve only watched the first episode but I get attached to characters and like don’t want to see the good ones have anything bad happen to them I already like Nella. I definitely want to read the book because from what I read it was about the new girl coming in and basically subtly manipulating the black girls in corporate businesses to be more white and specifically wear their hair not natural.

    I was on the fence about watching this show.
    I have been through a similar situation as a Sign Language 🤟🏾 Interpreter of color. I have been working in my field for almost 7 years. I remember my first year working at a call center where we would interpret calls between Deaf 🧏🏾‍♀️ & Hearing individuals.
    Anyways, this older white interpreter took a liking to me and we started to be “friends”. There were times she would ask questions about my hair, assuming things about me and my husband, the list went on. I decided I had enough & by this time I was pregnant. Inside of taking matters into my own hands ( to not become the angry black women), I reported to the higher ups & ending up having a meeting. After the meeting took place, she had the nerve to say “Why you didn’t come to me about this yourself?” Long behold a few months after, she ending up transferring & moving to another state 👏🏾. Won’t He do it 😂!
