A Pullman Standard R46 (N) train (5706-5708 + 5636-5634) is seen departing Lexington Avenue-59th Street, and entering the 60th Street Tunnel, on its way to Astoria, Queens. Its next stop would be Queensboro Plaza.
The R46s are numbered between 5482-6258, with 5482-6205 being in 4-car sets, and 6206-6258 being in 2-car sets. Please note that a couple of these 2-cars had been merged into 4-car sets due to previous accidents on four-car sets from 2017-2020. The two-car R46 married pairs are all out of service as of 1/23/25.
5482-5877 were initially assigned to Coney Island, making up 49.5 trains, while 5878-6258 were assigned to 207/Pitkin. However, 52 ex-Pitkin R46s (5890-5893, 5946-5949, 5978-5981, 6010-6013, 6022-6025, 6038-6041, 6046-6049, 6106-09, 6178-6181, 6186-6189, 6190-93, 6202-6205) were shifted to Coney Island in 2024, due to a displacement effort initiated by the R211As. As a result, Coney Island was able to retire R46 5790-5793 and 5810-5813, and shift R68s 2768-2783 to Concourse. The Yard now has 54.5 active R46 trains assigned to them, and three more trains than they used to. Nice to see 5900s at Coney Island now.
On the (N), (Q), and (W), the R46 fleet stands in place of the R160s that were sent to Jamaica in 2020. All MTA R46 cars are 75 feet in length, with the majority of them being ran in 8-car consists.
The R46s were built by Pullman Standard and refurbished by Morrison-Knudsen, and are approximately 49-50 years old as of now. They are currently being replaced directly by R211As, and indirectly by transferring R68s or R160s displaced by R211As in the near future.
