Hi there, I was wondering if you could create another video that provides a step-by-step explanation of the process, as your current video doesn't seem to match the blueprints and the voiceover doesn't quite match either. This has been a frustrating experience for me.

As mentioned in the comments inserters consume energy to rotate and to change length. You can use Bobs adjustable inserters mod to play around with that more.

What about quality inserters?

I suspect the orientation and lane of item affecting power draw is because the inserter defaults to the far lane, so it moves to that position first and then has a few additional frames of travel to actually drop/pickup the item - so you're getting slightly offset delays when moving the item. Would love to see someone test that hypothesis :D

I usually use burner inserters for my steam setup at start of game (if you can supply coal to the belts, it will bootstrap itself). I am very interested by seeing that this is worse for efficiency than I thought, but I think I'm gonna still do it for the early game, it has saved me from blackouts.

Personally, I think burner inserters are fine when being used for steam power plants with boilers. Because the last thing you want to deal with is the death spiral caused by your inserters not getting enough power to fuel the boilers, which'll be burning through their fuel as fast as possible if you're already drawing so much to slow them down.

I'm impressed due to the games determinacy that you found so many variants! I'm sure someone has mentioned this but the different lanes is about inserter extension, a different mode of movement with a different power draw.

I'll switch to a separate network as a black-out protection when creating and sustaining separate electric grid stops being so fucking annoying. If you could disable automatic wire connection for chosen poles and make it so that a building doesn't auto connect to the network just by being in pole's supply range, oh the things I'd do with power switches...

Burner inserters are not about efficiency but reliability as they are the only inserter that runs fine putting coal into a boiler even if you mess up and run out of power somehow

I use burners for my reactors, and nowhere else.

The dev literally gave inserters a PID loop for a simulated motor, that is some dedication!

Would the stack inserter efficiency drop below the burner inserter with stack research improvements and/or a syncopated input?

It makes sense that power draw is lower when it's turning at a constant speed. A frictionless inserter will continue to rotate with no force, so that 30% power is just to combat friction.

I eventually set up a station that unloads everything from the train into passive provider chests, waits for inactivity in the provider chests and then loads all the passive provider chests back into the train. That way you don't need to keep a buffer of every possible item

for the lamp id say its because its on the ground so most of the light it produces goes to space, lamps really wanna be high up for best effective radius for so many reasons

I use more modular service trains. this way, they can each serve a separate station. I got a border defense train with guns, ammo, walls and whatever else is needed for defense. I got a mining outpost one with miners, belts and stuff, then a light oil one, and so on. I use shared name delivery stations.

I think the power draw is higher when picking up from the near side of a belt because the standard length of the inserter goes to the far side. So the inserter has to retract to get to the near side.

i have over 1.4khours in the game i look at your over complex way to unload a train so smoll and weak i challenge you to unload 4 12 cargo wagon trains stacked side by side wire sorcery balanced loads i laugh at these things in sheer mega base lvl of output

burner inserter are meant for pre-electricity or back up your base power before solar panel incase you get a black out you arent meant to use burner inserter in long-term or forever, thats why theres "upgraded" version of it
