Probably going to double back to some Lateralus era stuff next! Also, the intro song is our new single “Snowy Mountains” by LemonTech, which just dropped on streaming platforms today. Obviously a very different vibe from TOOL, but if you liked it you can find it on any streaming platform. See you at the next video!
Let us not forget Danny was 58 or 59 years old here too, absolute Master of his craft is an understatement! It's one thing to play it but he wrote it too. His limb independence, his ability to create melodies, just everything he does is crazy!
Then in concert, he rolls straight into The Grudge, Sober, The Pot, Schism, Parabola, Lateralus, Forty six and two, or any of Tools master pieces with barely a 5 second rest. Danny is a master at work.
There is definitely a reason that his nickname is “The Octopus”. What an amazing drummer and gift to the world he is, and a super nice person, too. ✊🏼💙
The depths of this man's humility knows know bounds, he's even taken time away to play in bands with kids covering Tools songs. You can find them on the Tube. Speaking of kids, you should totally check out the kids from the O'Keafe Foundation coving Tool's song 46&2, phenomenal 🤘 but anyway thank you for an amazing reaction.
This is my favorite Tool song as well. From the overall ambiance, to the message, to the beautiful complexity of the 33/8 section, and the brilliance of Danny's ostinato. It's a masterpiece, and I also quite enjoy that it confounds the closed-minded.
I’m a little late but this is very well said. It seems so complex and it is, but it also has a lot of the pattern of Maynard’s speech rhythms. It’s really just taking small groupings and repeating them unpredictably and then adding independence among the elements. Danny’s limb independence is unparalleled.
@@bigchunkybubbles I'm sorry I didn't see this comment at the time. Yeah, when I first started listening to it, the randomness was like tripping over a curb I hadn't noticed. Now when I listen to it, it doesn't even seem to be in an odd meter anymore. I can just feel exactly where it's going to go, and a lot of that is about Maynard's vocals.
Everything he does is so tasteful and perfectly timed. The colors and textures of this song have helped to open my eyes to doing things different and find new avenues. Thank you Danny. Oh, and in my opinion he IS the best alive today.
Having seen them live a number of times, you owe it to yourselves to see them live. From the 90's until now, they have always invoked a truly original euphoric experience than I've ever seen with any other live performances.
The best set up for any Tool reaction video is one person who knows the song and is a fan and one who doesn't know it so well because the giddy joy on the Tool fan's face and the nervous/excited looks over to see if the newbie is enjoying it as much as you want them to is so relatable
What I love about Tool is that they put all of these effects and sounds that they are actually able to reproduce in concert, they just don't put them in there just to make their songs even more amazing and when the time comes to play live you will hear a song that differs from the studio version, that's why when you hear Tool' songs in the album, they are totally capable to reproduce it exactly as it is and if they get excited they can even play it better, and that's beautiful!
“He’s so good it makes me uncomfortable.” Best reaction. Anytime I see someone at this level I can’t stop thinking about all the practicing I haven’t done.
As a dedicated and patient TOOL fan since '92 ... Her reaction is appreciated! Listen to the Meaning behind they rhythms, music and lyrics and you'll be just fine!
O.K. you two this is my first visit to your channel. Danny Carey is a true master of his craft! The first section is him warming up. You two will see what I mean in a bit. Keep in mind that Danny has been playing drums for over 50 years. No darn wonder he is good!! Take note of his hand speed as this video progresses. Other drummers are amazed with this video and they are pros! Not some want-a-bees... My favorite part is coming up -- watch for the overhead light to begin to flash. When the lights do Danny breaks it OUT!! How strong does your back & core have to be to work those double bass drums like that?? This man is in a class all by himself. I like how he does ALL of that, puts his sticks on the snare, and fixes his hair.... Thanks!!!
From the 10min-ish mark in your video, the most impressive part aside from what he's doing with his hands is the high hat on the foot pedal never falling off beat
Loving your Tool reactions... Seeing them live is a whole different experience. Spiritual in a way. The first thing you notice is how much Danny and Justin do as far as the ambient sounds go. When most people hear the records, they assume it's a track or a synth. More often than not it's Danny or JC. Keep up the good work!
The Atlanta show was good. I was hoping for a slightly different setlist. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Flood though. Could hear Maynard clearly, he sounded identical to the recorded track and Justin playing the bass during the intro was neat to watch. I have to say that they have The Grudge intro spot on. I doubt there’s few people who could witness that intro and not get amped up.
Generally, this shows in much finer detail what Carey is doing. How big a part of Tool’s sound he is. The quieter middle section is the one from this video that kills me. Each limb doing a different rhythm yet it doesn’t sound chaotic. Mind boggling. Your point at the end is salient. Danny plays all of it. None of it is computer generated or on a pre-recorded loop
Danny's time signature and changes is insane to me. He's one of the best (if not THE best) in the scene right now (and has been since the very early of the 90s). I love this song, I love Tool. I need to catch them live one day!! :D
I always say, it must be so amazing to be Tool. To experience expression at the highest level well helping the listeners elevate their experience. I feel so blessed to have this band in my life.
I was at this show in Boston. It was incredible and have seen them 2 more times since. Just an amazing band! They came out for the encore and Danny switched from a Bird jersey to a Kobe jersey.
What's crazy is Danny as Tone Down on the size of his Drum Set these last few tours . I have been a fan since their first tour on the EP album in small clubs. That's where I meant them. Later I became friends with Maynard's Best Friend Tim Alexander Primus's first the drummer. And Perfect Circle and Pucsifer's drummer . Danny is actually a very nice guy. He is one of the Best. Yet, probably the Best Drummer who plays with the same creative as Danny but can add about twice the dynamic edge and feel. Terry Bozzio! He also owns the World The Largest Drum Set.
So that whole drum solo-ish section was Swiss Triplets. His ability to play that for that long, staying in time with the click and the band, and keeping the time signatures clearly in his head while keeping his feet alternating. Like, I’m pretty good at drums, or at least I was when I would practice for hours a day. It’s generally difficult to impress me with this particular instrument. But even something that “simple” as a Swiss triplet repeated is enough to tell me just how good he is. He wrote that in there knowing he could do it live every time. Wild.
The Mystic Octopus, The World's Greatest Drummer... His "FU$K YA, THAT WAS HARD, WE DID IT AGAIN!!!" smile is epic!!!! Inducted into the TOOL ARMY after seeing them in 1991 at a festival in Hawaii, my favorite band ever since, seen them multiple times over the years and they just keep getting better and better...4 geniuses, and not just musically... People who don't like or appreciate TOOL are of course entitled to thier WRONG opinion!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
the "outro" part of Pneuma to me, as a drummer (as if that would mean anything when it's a Danny Carey video lol) is always special - there is some raw, frantic, brutal energy it; but: controlled. cool. precision work ... the whole song wants to grab you and jump on a rampage but yet, ufff - how he accents with the crash cymbals, the selective yet forcefull doublebass. yea it is damn great work and Danny is a master.
HIGHLY recommend checking out drumeos vid of Mike Portney (Dream Theater) learning this song over a few hours, it's actually insane how talented he is to even attempt it let alone how well he did!
Mike Portnoy, the drummer from Dream Theater, another legendary prog drummer tried to replicate this. Drumeo posted it yesterday I think. Portnoy is very good. They shot for hours and hours and he said that he didn't learn the song. It's extremely complex, obviously, Danny is a legend, and for all we know, Danny has been working on this for 20 years and Portnoy had one day. It's a super entertaining watch, especially for talented musicians like you two.
Not only one of the greatest to ever pick up sticks, age 59 when this was recorded. The master of polyrhythm and the GOAT in my book. Keep Spiraling Out...
She says, "You can't put in a genre." True, but it may be somewhat *close* to the genre King Crimson created in their first seven releases (1969 to 1974), with a special nod to Larks' Tongues in Aspic (their 1973 release). Side note: I recently watched an interview with Danny Carey, and he was wearing a King Crimson T-shirt!
Just saw these dudes live and I was on mushrooms. I couldn’t help but think that Danny looked so small behind his drum set and I couldn’t shake the fact that he looked like he was running his ass off the entire time. Oh and Justin looked like the devil at one point. Anyway, if you ever see them live, psychedelics is the way to go.
15:03 don’t forget, that whole drum ‘solo’ is not a random crazy traditional solo, that’s the exact written music from the album which makes it that much more incredible. He can recreate that entire song every night with near studio quality every take.
this s my fav tool song representing their talents. BUT my favorite personal song that reflexes my me is INVISIBILE. react to that song please, Semper Fi to all the veterans.
Danny even stated he messed up in the song during the middle. Watch the high hat. If it hadn't been pointed out I'd have never known. Does not take away in the least.
This is why Danny is lovingly nicknamed “The Octopus” 🐙 the man can play with all four limbs at the same time with 4 different drum patterns and barely makes any mistakes.
"He's so good it makes me uncomfortable" The most accurate statement ever on Danny. Around like 12:45 you both start talking about Danny is the best drummer around, polyrhythm wise etc and time sig's, Terry Bozzio has 14 foot pedals and is the King of Limb Disassociation, now a step abouve Bozzio is Grant Collins from Aust, he has more foot pedals that Bozzio and is described in magazines as "sounding like a whole village of percussionists playin at once". Very primal and tribal. Trust me i know drummers of all genres. Danny is center stage live and the highlight upfront panned up the middle in mixes.
The pads are Mandalas and he assigns them any which way he likes, the intro is laid out like Val said a lot like how a steel drum would be. Those stacks of racks are the brains and sample banks, many samples he collected himself. Although the pads have 127 levels of velocity sensing, Danny's muscles generate approximately 23872 levels of velocity and he hits each tap, thwack, or thump just right every time. I think his muscle memory works a bit like like dominoes, once the song lights off the last motion triggers the next all the way through, like riding a bike or skateboarding, no way to remember the parts, they just occur when they should due to practice and repetition. He also practices with distractions on purpose to help ensure nothing can throw him off. There is a video where the drum tech comes in and changes out a whole broken drum head during a performance and it barely sounds like anything went wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia_Mandala_Drums
Saying that someone is the best ever, or anything to that sentiment is tough because it's all subjective. That being said... Danny Carey is the best to ever do it. #TOOLarmy
I'm 45 and pay for the youtube with no adds. Time is money. Everyone is struggling like myself. I don't ever see adds and forget until watching reactions. 😂 love your content keep up your great reactions.
Cancel that, save your money, and get the official (and FREE) uBlock Origin extension for any browser that isn't a Chromium browser, since that's owned by Google (as is TH-cam), so they'll bug you about ads on those. Firefox works fine (and imports all your saved info and bookmarks) for example. No ads, and no ad-extortion, and complete control to exclude any other page elements and annoying presentation tricks you don't like either (like those stupid popup video suggestion buttons at the end while you're still watching your videos?) if you take the time to learn how to use the tools in it.
His left brain, right brain is off the charts! More, his attention to detail is unrivaled. When Neil Peart died, I wept.with that said, Danny Carey is something more.
Interesting Fact, Danny had played this live only a dozen or so times ever when this was filmed at the show in Boston in 2019. So Danny's smile which I knew she would catch, was partly the difficulty with the limited times they had played it, and Vic Firth setting up cameras added a little a bit of extra juice like your most complicated song, and 1 take, and go. This and and that old Sober video are the only 2 Professionally shot Tool Live videos in existence, although they have been recording their shows themselves since at least 2012 according to Adam, so one day, hopefully a long time from now when the live shows are no longer, hopefully they will release some DVDs.
As a drummer I would hazard to say that he is the best drummer there has ever been. It’s like the guy has a separate brain for every limb. Polyrhythms, time signature changes….. the guy is a drumming god.
Probably going to double back to some Lateralus era stuff next! Also, the intro song is our new single “Snowy Mountains” by LemonTech, which just dropped on streaming platforms today. When they won a grammy, he gave praise to the professor. If you know you know.
Mr. Peart
Bonham too
We saw Danny sitting for the late Professor with Geddy and Alex, who else could?
The professor Neil Peart. Who doesn’t know?
Took my wife to see them for the first time In November and all she could talk about was the octopus.

Saying that someone is the best ever, or anything to that sentiment is tough because it's all subjective. That being said... Danny Carey is the best to ever do it. #TOOLarmy
I got to see them in concert last night and it was AMAZING, but I don't know how he can keep up that kind of pace for 2 hours he's not human
En tu vida de música te lo imaginas. 30 años y os sorprende
Yes, Danny is indeed the greatest drummer ever.
I love this because it's so technical. As far as songs though, the breakdown in Rosetta Stoned is still way up there!
Right now, I'd have to say Danny Carey & Brann Dailor of Mastadon are the very best metal/progressive drummers out there.
As a drummer I would hazard to say that he is the best drummer there has ever been. It’s like the guy has a separate brain for every limb. Polyrhythms, time signature changes….. the guy is a drumming god.
