Probably going to double back to some Lateralus era stuff next! Also, the intro song is our new single “Snowy Mountains” by LemonTech, which just dropped on streaming platforms today. Obviously a very different vibe from TOOL, but if you liked it you can find it on any streaming platform. See you at the next video!
Let us not forget Danny was 58 or 59 years old here too, absolute Master of his craft is an understatement! It's one thing to play it but he wrote it too. His limb independence, his ability to create melodies, just everything he does is crazy!
Then in concert, he rolls straight into The Grudge, Sober, The Pot, Schism, Parabola, Lateralus, Forty six and two, or any of Tools master pieces with barely a 5 second rest. Danny is a master at work.
There is definitely a reason that his nickname is “The Octopus”. What an amazing drummer and gift to the world he is, and a super nice person, too. ✊🏼💙
The depths of this man's humility knows know bounds, he's even taken time away to play in bands with kids covering Tools songs. You can find them on the Tube. Speaking of kids, you should totally check out the kids from the O'Keafe Foundation coving Tool's song 46&2, phenomenal 🤘 but anyway thank you for an amazing reaction.
This is my favorite Tool song as well. From the overall ambiance, to the message, to the beautiful complexity of the 33/8 section, and the brilliance of Danny's ostinato. It's a masterpiece, and I also quite enjoy that it confounds the closed-minded.
I’m a little late but this is very well said. It seems so complex and it is, but it also has a lot of the pattern of Maynard’s speech rhythms. It’s really just taking small groupings and repeating them unpredictably and then adding independence among the elements. Danny’s limb independence is unparalleled.
This is why Danny is lovingly nicknamed “The Octopus” 🐙 the man can play with all four limbs at the same time with 4 different drum patterns and barely makes any mistakes.
I learned from watching this footage in the past that Danny is wearing Larry Birds kit. That intrigued me enough to check out Larry. The great honouring the great. Beautiful.
Danny is a huge hoops fan, grew up in Kansas in the home of KU. He wears a jersey from the home team where they are playing, but if there's not a home team he's usually in a Kansas jersey or a LA Lakers jersey.
From the 10min-ish mark in your video, the most impressive part aside from what he's doing with his hands is the high hat on the foot pedal never falling off beat
As a dedicated and patient TOOL fan since '92 ... Her reaction is appreciated! Listen to the Meaning behind they rhythms, music and lyrics and you'll be just fine!
Loving your Tool reactions... Seeing them live is a whole different experience. Spiritual in a way. The first thing you notice is how much Danny and Justin do as far as the ambient sounds go. When most people hear the records, they assume it's a track or a synth. More often than not it's Danny or JC. Keep up the good work!
The best set up for any Tool reaction video is one person who knows the song and is a fan and one who doesn't know it so well because the giddy joy on the Tool fan's face and the nervous/excited looks over to see if the newbie is enjoying it as much as you want them to is so relatable
“He’s so good it makes me uncomfortable.” Best reaction. Anytime I see someone at this level I can’t stop thinking about all the practicing I haven’t done.
The Atlanta show was good. I was hoping for a slightly different setlist. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Flood though. Could hear Maynard clearly, he sounded identical to the recorded track and Justin playing the bass during the intro was neat to watch. I have to say that they have The Grudge intro spot on. I doubt there’s few people who could witness that intro and not get amped up.
Having seen them live a number of times, you owe it to yourselves to see them live. From the 90's until now, they have always invoked a truly original euphoric experience than I've ever seen with any other live performances.
the "outro" part of Pneuma to me, as a drummer (as if that would mean anything when it's a Danny Carey video lol) is always special - there is some raw, frantic, brutal energy it; but: controlled. cool. precision work ... the whole song wants to grab you and jump on a rampage but yet, ufff - how he accents with the crash cymbals, the selective yet forcefull doublebass. yea it is damn great work and Danny is a master.
Danny's time signature and changes is insane to me. He's one of the best (if not THE best) in the scene right now (and has been since the very early of the 90s). I love this song, I love Tool. I need to catch them live one day!! :D
I was at this show in Boston. It was incredible and have seen them 2 more times since. Just an amazing band! They came out for the encore and Danny switched from a Bird jersey to a Kobe jersey.
So that whole drum solo-ish section was Swiss Triplets. His ability to play that for that long, staying in time with the click and the band, and keeping the time signatures clearly in his head while keeping his feet alternating. Like, I’m pretty good at drums, or at least I was when I would practice for hours a day. It’s generally difficult to impress me with this particular instrument. But even something that “simple” as a Swiss triplet repeated is enough to tell me just how good he is. He wrote that in there knowing he could do it live every time. Wild.
What's crazy is Danny as Tone Down on the size of his Drum Set these last few tours . I have been a fan since their first tour on the EP album in small clubs. That's where I meant them. Later I became friends with Maynard's Best Friend Tim Alexander Primus's first the drummer. And Perfect Circle and Pucsifer's drummer . Danny is actually a very nice guy. He is one of the Best. Yet, probably the Best Drummer who plays with the same creative as Danny but can add about twice the dynamic edge and feel. Terry Bozzio! He also owns the World The Largest Drum Set.
I always say, it must be so amazing to be Tool. To experience expression at the highest level well helping the listeners elevate their experience. I feel so blessed to have this band in my life.
15:03 don’t forget, that whole drum ‘solo’ is not a random crazy traditional solo, that’s the exact written music from the album which makes it that much more incredible. He can recreate that entire song every night with near studio quality every take.
Mike Portnoy, the drummer from Dream Theater, another legendary prog drummer tried to replicate this. Drumeo posted it yesterday I think. Portnoy is very good. They shot for hours and hours and he said that he didn't learn the song. It's extremely complex, obviously, Danny is a legend, and for all we know, Danny has been working on this for 20 years and Portnoy had one day. It's a super entertaining watch, especially for talented musicians like you two.
Not only one of the greatest to ever pick up sticks, age 59 when this was recorded. The master of polyrhythm and the GOAT in my book. Keep Spiraling Out...
Danny even stated he messed up in the song during the middle. Watch the high hat. If it hadn't been pointed out I'd have never known. Does not take away in the least.
Generally, this shows in much finer detail what Carey is doing. How big a part of Tool’s sound he is. The quieter middle section is the one from this video that kills me. Each limb doing a different rhythm yet it doesn’t sound chaotic. Mind boggling. Your point at the end is salient. Danny plays all of it. None of it is computer generated or on a pre-recorded loop
this s my fav tool song representing their talents. BUT my favorite personal song that reflexes my me is INVISIBILE. react to that song please, Semper Fi to all the veterans.
Just saw these dudes live and I was on mushrooms. I couldn’t help but think that Danny looked so small behind his drum set and I couldn’t shake the fact that he looked like he was running his ass off the entire time. Oh and Justin looked like the devil at one point. Anyway, if you ever see them live, psychedelics is the way to go.
Saying that someone is the best ever, or anything to that sentiment is tough because it's all subjective. That being said... Danny Carey is the best to ever do it. #TOOLarmy
Interesting Fact, Danny had played this live only a dozen or so times ever when this was filmed at the show in Boston in 2019. So Danny's smile which I knew she would catch, was partly the difficulty with the limited times they had played it, and Vic Firth setting up cameras added a little a bit of extra juice like your most complicated song, and 1 take, and go. This and and that old Sober video are the only 2 Professionally shot Tool Live videos in existence, although they have been recording their shows themselves since at least 2012 according to Adam, so one day, hopefully a long time from now when the live shows are no longer, hopefully they will release some DVDs.
The pads are Mandalas and he assigns them any which way he likes, the intro is laid out like Val said a lot like how a steel drum would be. Those stacks of racks are the brains and sample banks, many samples he collected himself. Although the pads have 127 levels of velocity sensing, Danny's muscles generate approximately 23872 levels of velocity and he hits each tap, thwack, or thump just right every time. I think his muscle memory works a bit like like dominoes, once the song lights off the last motion triggers the next all the way through, like riding a bike or skateboarding, no way to remember the parts, they just occur when they should due to practice and repetition. He also practices with distractions on purpose to help ensure nothing can throw him off. There is a video where the drum tech comes in and changes out a whole broken drum head during a performance and it barely sounds like anything went wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia_Mandala_Drums
now that you've seen Danny "The Octopus" Carey live, you guys need to watch Neil "The Professor" Peart's drum solo video! Both are two of the best drummers of all time
As a drummer I would hazard to say that he is the best drummer there has ever been. It’s like the guy has a separate brain for every limb. Polyrhythms, time signature changes….. the guy is a drumming god.
Probably going to double back to some Lateralus era stuff next! Also, the intro song is our new single “Snowy Mountains” by LemonTech, which just dropped on streaming platforms today. Show her parabol/ parabola!!!
@@johnw6137 oh hell yeah that’s a good idea!
hi. nice work on your music. congratulations. :) about this video, well i love how she reacts. she gets little mad when u pause. we all do . lol
I'll be checking this one out.
Bass sounds like butter. 😛
i like your music too, you guys sound pretty genuine
Let us not forget Danny was 58 or 59 years old here too, absolute Master of his craft is an understatement! It's one thing to play it but he wrote it too. His limb independence, his ability to create melodies, just everything he does is crazy!
True! The physicality of drumming is no joke. Good thing he’s still looking pretty jacked though 😂
He was 59 when this was recorded in 2019.
Then in concert, he rolls straight into The Grudge, Sober, The Pot, Schism, Parabola, Lateralus, Forty six and two, or any of Tools master pieces with barely a 5 second rest. Danny is a master at work.
When they won a grammy, he gave praise to the professor. If you know you know.
Mr. Peart
Bonham too
There is definitely a reason that his nickname is “The Octopus”. What an amazing drummer and gift to the world he is, and a super nice person, too. ✊🏼💙

"He's so good it makes me uncomfortable." That's the best quote out of all the hundreds of reactions I've watched so far!
Yes. She almost slipped out of her chair. 😂 😂
@@DutchFighter71 Bro
The best quote
Took my wife to see them for the first time In November and all she could talk about was the octopus.
His nickname is the octopus 🐙 for a reason
Danny's smile man, aw I'm in love with him. Just out there being the best to ever do it and having a great time for us.
This is my favorite Tool song as well. From the overall ambiance, to the message, to the beautiful complexity of the 33/8 section, and the brilliance of Danny's ostinato. It's a masterpiece, and I also quite enjoy that it confounds the closed-minded.

One time Danny started the wrong song and Maynard the singer turned around and was like “Danny are you high?” 😂
You went on your TOOL journey and now you’re excited to show your friends, you’re one of us now
Saw them live a week ago. By far the best show I've been to.
I must have heard this a hundred times, but still find it kinda hypnotic
Bro, I think she'll love the Descending journey, if we're doing a lot of newer stuff.
Yyyyyaaaaassssssssss
I just saw them live on Wednesday and they played Pneuma and Descending. They also played Flood with a fuzz effect on the bass
We just filmed a few but I’ll put that one on the list for the next filming session!
Nobody can touch these guys. They're on a whole nuther' level 💯🔥
One of the best drummers out there
dont forget that its a tool concert. they all sound crisp live
I learned from watching this footage in the past that Danny is wearing Larry Birds kit. That intrigued me enough to check out Larry.
The great honouring the great. Beautiful.
Oh man, Larry Bird is one of the legends. That's really cool that you picked up that trail.
Danny is a huge hoops fan, grew up in Kansas in the home of KU. He wears a jersey from the home team where they are playing, but if there's not a home team he's usually in a Kansas jersey or a LA Lakers jersey.
Every reaction to Danny’s pneuma video is hilarious. The stunned and entranced look on your faces is so genuine. He’s a robot, a 4 limbed metronome.
From the 10min-ish mark in your video, the most impressive part aside from what he's doing with his hands is the high hat on the foot pedal never falling off beat

my favorite fan of tool is a mathematician. he´s literaly loving the math in those drums
He'll really appreciate the math of Lateralus then, based on the Fibbonacci sequence.
I just heard them do this song live two days ago at the State Farm Arena here in Atlanta🔥 it was absolutely mind blowing, the entire show🔥🔥🔥
I’m jealoussss!

Saw in okc 2 weeks ago and still tear up reliving it
Seeing Tool live isn't a show.... It's an experience I'd fully recommend to anyone.

Love to see Ren make it onto your channel! Enjoyed this.
Val, I love watching your reactions. The looks of total amazement and wonder are priceless.

I was at this show in Boston. It was incredible and have seen them 2 more times since. Just an amazing band! They came out for the encore and Danny switched from a Bird jersey to a Kobe jersey.
With every stroke he smashes your stress hormones away.
The fact that he has a look somewhere between having the time of his life and bored out of his mind is amazing. Danny is the goat.
I saw online somewhere that he just won best drummer in the 2023 Drumeo awards.
Stunningly brilliant musician. Nice selection
So that whole drum solo-ish section was Swiss Triplets. His ability to play that for that long, staying in time with the click and the band, and keeping the time signatures clearly in his head while keeping his feet alternating.

Correct except he doesn't use a click track - he *is* the click track.

A Man of passion for his craft.
Nice review guys 👍🏻
"Eyes full of wondeeeeeeerrr"😊
Best Drummer all Time Place 26??? No,no! He is Number ONE!!!! Moin aus Schleswig-Holstein.
❤simply amazing
I love this because it's so technical. As far as songs though, the breakdown in Rosetta Stoned is still way up there!
Danny Carey and Tomas Haake of Meshuggah are next level. Tool is a religious experience and Meshuggah is a visceral one. Equally profound.
her face says it all lmfao love it
Danny 'The Octopus' Carey = GOAT
just followed u on amazon music and subbed here.....Lateralus album cover is my only bumper sticker. good stuff 🤘
Thank you. :)
This is the perfect showcase to see how Tool atarted as a metal band, evolved through prog metal and now just ascended to jazz.
When both their head nods are off due to the change ups in rhythm...it gets everyone.
Take her to see them live❤
They sound like the record live. They’re amaxing

51... been playing since 9... with all due respect to the greats, this is the best, single song performance by a drummer on video...
So beatuful
I got to see them in concert last night and it was AMAZING, but I don't know how he can keep up that kind of pace for 2 hours he's not human
Its always hilarious to watch kids realize sounds can be made organically with kinetic motion
I'll just say two names for best drummers of all time. Neil Peart and Danny Carey... Both are/were PHENOMENAL.
33. Climbing the ladder . Pneuma. Children of light

Thanks guys, another great review. But what I'm really impressed with is "Snowy Mountains". Amazing voice, awesome song. Good job!
Thank you so much! That means a lot! :)

No one else comes close to Danny as a drummer. Dead or alive. Writing drum music like this and performing it for decades. Case closed.
The pads are Mandalas and he assigns them any which way he likes, the intro is laid out like Val said a lot like how a steel drum would be.
