    Thanks for the inspiration. My Spitfire dash needs to be redone. Sadly, the material won't be as reasonable as you paid, but with a new dash cover, $230+ Cdn, it's well worth the try.

    Hi Monkey. I need a replacement wood dash (the on in front of the steering wheel) for my 1975 Stag as it has disintegrated. Any ideas? Thanks Jane.

      @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jane these dash's are not very well made from factory and some of the so called replacements are very poor as trying to make them from scratch needs a lot of work and good tooling if I were you I would seek out a good old school cabinet maker who could re veneer them for you if the backing is good failing that its a few hours doing the ebay shuffle. regards jeff

    Hi Jeff, your video have been really helpful. I have an MGC that I have just completed the servo rebuild for. 20 years ago I bought a replacement rebuilt but with your help I chose this time the rebuild route. Fitted it today, hydraulics look ok but the brakes stay on and and stay on, the front wheels do not turn, leave it 1/2 hour and the pressure has gone. Any ideas what I may have done wrong, or what to look into, I think it something to do with the vacuum, the valves? There is no white return valve, only the red piece so I should fit an alternate return valve, even though that was not fitted previously. Thanks again Paul

    • @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069
      @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Paul its difficult for me to answer this one as its clear its not venting the vac there could be several things wrong what i would try is look through the internet and try to find a breakdown of the unit manual or parts list and compare your rebuild that may show up the problems. you may well find the problem to be very minor let me no if you have no luck regards jeff

    I've had a spit6 conversion since i was 14 years old niw 36. First year for me to tear it apart down to the chassis. Frames a little shoot, so i came to the agreement with my self to build a full tube frame chassis with roll cage and find a Gt6 body for it. Then if i ever decide to upgrade to a full LS1 engine it will be ready to go. Or completely rebuild the gt6 engine to race specs. Yes i know i will never get my money back. I'm thinking about just having a rotary switch Off/I/II and a start button so my keys aren't clanging around. If theives get in the car, not having a key isn't going to stop them :) I usually hide a switch to isolate the starter circuit anyway which isn't a bad idea, or just mis-label another switch on the dash. There's lots of ways to skin a cat and that's half the fun of it. I'm doing up a 76 Spit with a Triumph 2500 engine (sadly not PI) 'for the wife'. Does yours have a type D Laycock O/D in it? Mine's making me scratch my head. Says the solenoid and arm adjustment can be done in situ but you need a child's fingers to get at them.

    I'm almost at this point in my rebuild, but I'm wondering ,how did you get the old jet out? Press from the bottom (like pressing in the new one) or tap out from the top (like seating the new one?)

    • @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069
      @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David may I say that the important thing here is to get the height right when you refit the new jet very important been a while since I did this video but I'm sure this detail is included I tapped it down if I remember with a tool I made basically a long bolt which I turned on the lathe witch fit down the centre to a shoulder so no damage to the carb body when drifting out. don't forget to measure the height of the old jet before you start depth gauge best for this job. 100thou is what it should be from the top best practice to check measure. regards Jeff

    • @DavidPlass
      @DavidPlass 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see it at the very end of your last video and beginning of this one, you tapped it out from the bottom (with a hammer.) I had this video "saved" for a while and the bookmark was after that point when i picked it up, so I didn't remember the beginning. Thanks for the information.

      Hi Robert, just been through the videos found they are numbered wrong the end of part 2 shows the fitting of the float bowl or the bottom of the carb which was the end of that section of the build the next video I started the top half of the carb which I had wrongly titled part 4 when it should have been part 3 which brings the series to a end. sadly I filmed this series to the end of the job then did the edit which I was disappointed to find the mistakes I made zoomed to far in etc by then the carbs where finished. the problems with trying to both film and work. hope you get something from the series if there is something your not sure about I may be able to help. regards Jeff

    Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to upload this videos. It really helped me a lot. I have en internal leak in the servo on my MGC GT which has the same servo. I took it apart today. It still had the spotwelded clamp around the housing so it probably hasn't been touched since 1969. So I was a bit curious how it would look inside. But everything came apart without problems. Even the plug came out without problems. Took about an hour to take it to pieces. And it was about a teacup of brake fluid in the vacuum housing. Have replace all the rubbers so its ready to put back together, just waiting for the paint to dry. Again, thanks a lot :-)

    Hello, great series of videos on rebuilding these units. I have 2 apart at the moment, a MK IIA and a MKIIB. One for my '68 Volvo 1800 S and one for my '64 Volvo 122 S. Two points: there should be a flat rubber gasket under the air filter but I didn't see you install that , and secondly it was not clear whether you painted the inside of the vacuum canister, which I would recommend not doing. The action of that piston/diaphragm sliding back and forth will probably rub the paint off and gum up the works. One of the major causes of the brakes locking up is the air piston binding up inside that canister. Some folks send the canister out for the inside to be Teflon coated to prevent bonding. The MKII A has a leather seal on the piston instead of a rubber diaphragm, and that's even more complicated and difficult to source. Also the Girling info stresses rebuilding every 40 K miles or every 3 years, so it's definitely a maintenance item. Keep up the good work!

    • @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069
      @greasemonkeygaragewatson1069 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi fretman6 unable to remember the rubber gasket fit its been a year now since I completed the rebuild and the car is now well covered up for winter so unable to check for sure but I do remember the seal so think I did install it. will have to check. no I didn't paint the inside for the same reasons you mention mine was remarkably rust free canister so just cleaned and dried but think this unit had been overhauled before at some time and was coated inside with some thing this had not chipped or worn so left as it was. see you mentioned the service intervals I tend to go for fluid changes every 2 years regardless of mileage would leave a full overhaul longer checking other parts ie cylinder rubber seals for general condition if there is a problem there then I would look to service the whole system. thanks for the great comment its good to hear someone else is out there doing this kind of work keeps the shared information live for all. regards Jeff.

    • @airman49
      @airman49 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      fretman6; Yes there is a rubber gasket under the air filter. And regarding painting the inside of the vacuum housing, its not a problem on the Mk2B but it is on the Mk2A. Beeing scandinavian I have had some Volvo's in the past :-) The Mk2B is a better design, if the piston gets stuck on the A model, and at some time it will, the brakes may lock on which is normally not convenient :-)

      I rebuilt the carb with the kit available here in the US. It mostly contained gaskets and a new needle and seat. After putting it back on the car, it started leaking fuel from a hole on the filter side of the carb once it reached operating temperature. Any idea what would cause this? It did the same thing prior to the rebuild.

      your welcome. I was just thinking about.What I'd I found a TR6 GT coupe. And I go through it. And I find that the motor is no good and the frame is cracked. And if I have the auto body,mechanic skills and machine shops. I would take the car apart like you did. then I measure the frame. then I'll be looking for a Honda Accord V6 two door. that's been hit on the side. That's totaled by the insurance company. take the Accord completely apart. All I have is the raw frame for TR6. and after careful measurements in Machining. I build the suspension frame. where the Accord parts would bolt on. Then again build the engine mounts radiator support and transmission mounts and "K-Frame". but here's my question is. did they eat TR6 have struts in the back or was it a solid axle?

      Hi Darek I bought the wood at a local cabinet makers I think any cabinet makers shop will have some it was a plank about 1.2 m long x 300mm wide and I got them to run the wood through a thickneser to about 8mm then glued the pitch pine backing on overnight to dry then back in the thickneser again to 1mm thicker than the factory size. try and contact someone local to you to see if they could do the same, it makes a much better job and will last a lot longer than the factory one. regards Jeff

    Well done, it's absolutely amazing what you can find on youtube. I shall now try and renovate my girling servo. Was it Past Parts you got your servo repair kit from? Have you seen any Jademutley videos on his vitesse restoration project? I know a few years ago he restored a Mk11 GT6. cheers Steve

    Great vid. I wonder if using three clamps, so at any time there are always two holding down the template, would be safer? I can imagine myself cutting half the template, only to have it move while re-clamping it...

      I think the fact that you're experienced with the router works in your favor, unlike me.

    Oh, those routers can be tricky. That dash is going to look fantastic. Regarding your Brigdeport maschine, could this be a help? th-cam.com/video/TxeGu-MbgSQ/w-d-xo.html BTW. Last weekend i found a dash top panel for my Spitfire MK 3. I also got a set of Dunlop steel rims 5,5 inch wide and a MK 4 anti roll bar and some other things for some 300£.

      +Ulrik Kaul Hi Ulrik thankfully I don't pull that trick very often but routers do bite with out warning. sounds like its spending time on your project to did you get your parts in the UK? . btw the dash is finished photo on my facebook page Jeff Watson.

      +greasemonkeygarage watson Found the parts just 40 km away from where i live. He has a bunch of parts. He has several Spitfires witch include his version of a Spit6. He's even build his own replica of the Spitfire LeMans type witch he's use for racing. He just bought one of the prototypes of Triumph TR2 that was used for promotion in the US Nice chap to know, that's for sure.
