Solar Eclipse Impact on Solar Panel Generation | April 8, 2024
In this video I show you the solar generation impact that the April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse had as 90% of the sun was blocked over my home. This occurred while I was enjoying totality in Quebec, Canada. I show what my system typically generates on a sunny and partly sunny day, then compare that to what was observed on eclipse day including about how much generation was lost due to the eclipse. My Tesla Powerwall nearly kicked in due to the substantial lost in solar energy. I share some photos and video from the path of totality as well.

    Teslafamilychannel, Hybrids are so much better than your BS Tesla and if your going on a long road trip with your fantasy BS Tesla, then don’t forget to pack a red fuel tank full of gasoline and tow a gas powered generator to charge your BS Tesla while on a long road trip with your BS Tesla

      Thanks for watching and sharing your wonderful excitement for EVs! Please entertain me with why a hybrid is better? Have you even been inside a Tesla? Don't tell me a hybrid is better because you can stop at a gas station? Ha! Enjoy the 20 miles of battery range in your hybrid.

      @@TeslaFamilyChannel I don’t think JJ is well. Probabaly a bot, or typical jealous little puzz-y who thinks his idiocy is relevant. Toddle off clown. Hybrids are awesome, but let’s not get silly thinking they are at Tesla’s level.

    • @jjcacnio3601

      @TeslaFamilyChannel Certainly I will explain why Hybrids are better than Tesla. Let me explain, Like my van, that is Hybrid, I get 36-40 miles per gallon, the battery on Hybrid gets its charge through regenerative brakes on wheel and engine so I don't have to worry about charging it while the car charges the battery. I understand that you like EVs a lot that you don't have to do maintenance on and I'm just saying the real downside of owning a Tesla is because the real down fall of owning a Tesla is the battery same thing with the Hybrid, but Hybrid batteries are somewhat cheaper to replace Vs. Tesla battery that you have to spend $22,000 on average just to replace a battery on a Tesla so the biggest looser is the Tesla because batteries are more expensive to replace Vs. a Hybrid vehicle that is somewhat cheaper to replace the battery

    • @jjcacnio3601
      @jjcacnio3601 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @TeslaFamilyChannel And also, I don't get 20 miles of range on my Hybrid, I get 36-40 miles per gallon and the battery gets charged through the engine and wheels through regenerative brakes, so before you trash my opinion about Hybrids, well read this comment and think again

    • @rickkay9548
      @rickkay9548 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jjcacnio3601 the battery in a Tesla is more expensive because it’s bigger, but it also lasts significantly longer due to better cycle life and battery management than a hybrid. Hybrids are ok for some people, but the battery is NOT the issue in a Tesla, since replacements are exceedingly rare. And if you were honest, you would apply your illogic to all EVs, but since you know nothing, you target the best EV made since you a jealous. It’s so obvious. Also, use periods and proper grammar in your sentences, you sound like a rambling child. A hybrids maintenance plan is far worse than even the worst EVs. 🤦🤣

    i live alone and i can never get 100% self powered even though i dont draw anything from the grid , its always 99% , i thought maybe its because i let it go back to the grind so i have been trying to use all the solar by leaving on an electric heater evenn though its a hot day , i do get paid more from my feed in tariff for the more i use more than if i export it . last week for a short time i had 107% ( i dont know how ) how can i get 100% ? (im in the UK ) thanks good video .

      Thanks for watching! 99% is great, try to look closely at the individual graphs on your Tesla app for a day which you were 99% self-powered. See where that 1% is occurring. You should be able to find a slight spike on the grid import then you need to pin down what caused you to have to import.

      @@rodden1953 this sounds kind of like my SRECs but I get paid for them whether I use them or push them to the grid. To get 100% self powered, try this experiment. On a sunny day, try to use as little power as possible and allow the excess to go to the grid. That should definitely put you at 100%. Or you could add a Powerwall to store your excess and remove any lingering need to use the grid.

    So if 2 powerwalls is 27kwh of storage, and I’m averaging about 50kwh a day to charge my model 3, would that be enough storage? I’m pretty sure I’m doing that math wrong and I know kW and KwH have different meanings across the board. But if I have 2 full powerwalls when the sun goes down and I get home from work to plug in my Tesla. I can only charge up to 27kwh (less depending on backup reserve) and the rest from the grid ? I was told 2 powerwalls should be plenty for charging my EV but the math doesn’t add up. If someone could help explain I’d appreciate it!

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel
      @TeslaFamilyChannel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No two Powerwalls would not be enough to cover your usage. You'd need 4 to cover your usage if you only wanted to charge from Powerwall but I suggest charging from the grid on a Time of Use electric plan when electricity is cheapest or just using the Charge from Solar feature from Tesla if you have a large solar array. Powerwalls are a great home backup but not large enough (unless you have many of them) to be used regularly for large EV charges.

    I've had the Tesla Insurance since I took my delivery last November. It's alright mostly but I've had some real issues with phantom forward collision warnings. last week it went off 3 times and none of them were anywhere near even 1% chance of any sort of collision. I'm talking situations like I was following a car at approx. 35 mph with about 3 or 4 car lengths between us and when the driver in front of me simply stepped on their brakes to turn into a parking lot, my Model 3 turned it red on the screen and beeped at me. It did this before I could even react, nevermind the fact that there was absolutely no chance of any contact whatsoever. It could be due to my car having cameras only and no ultrasonic sensors but it's still annoying as heck. It dropped my score from 96 to 94 in 2 days through no fault of my own. The 10 pn cutoff for 'late night driving' is a real annoyance as well. I could see midnight to 5 am, but 10 pm is way too early. Plenty of people go to a movie or a game and drive home after 10 pm.

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel
      @TeslaFamilyChannel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with Tesla Insurance! Are you saving money verses what it would cost you to insure your car with another company? FCWs are very sensitive. The car is always calculating your speed and distance from a vehicle in front of you, along with that other vehicles speed and the difference. If you are both going a similar speed that speed difference is very small but if the vehicle in front applies the brakes and it takes you several seconds to respond then it usually throws an FCW. Best way to avoid those is to drive in autopilot/FSD as much as you can. I drive alot in FSD and still get FCWs the times that I am manually driving. It is dinging my score but also helping to keep me alert.

    • @BoNajdrovsky
      @BoNajdrovsky 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TeslaFamilyChannel the cost has been mostly similar or a few dollars less compared to the annual quote that I got from Progressive before I took delivery last November. They quoted me something like $1,680 for the year and my Tesla Insurance payments have been hovering between $129 and $140 per month. An outlier to this was January when it spiked up to $220 due to an unusually high amount of driving combined with a relatively low driving score. Since I took delivery a couple of days before Thanksgiving and drove out of state twice in a period of 30 days, Tesla Insurance figured that I am on pace for 25,000 miles annually. Combined with the fact that they dropped me from the initial score of 90 to an 87, my initial rate went up from the initial $137 to the $220. I quickly understood the factors that they use to score your driving and raised my score back up to 96. Also, over the last 2 months I managed to lower the average annual mileage down to 12,000 and that has helped to reduce my monthly cost drop to $130. It should get even lower once I reach my annual mileage target of 10 K miles which is also what my lease is for, as long as I can keep my driving score at about 95 or higher.

    If the car in front of you stops too quickly, you’re following too closely. I drive a model Y performance, I love the hell out of it and I’m certainly not a granny behind the wheel, but I rarely get forward collision warnings. Tesla will give you those warnings more often if it recognizes a vehicle braking ahead of you and senses that your eyes are not on the road. Don’t tailgate, keep your eyes on the road and your score will jump up quite a bit. I’ve got a 97, frequently 98. and my only detractors are that once a month or so I leave for the office before 4am and a little bbit of hard cornering (It’s a model Y performance, sometimes I get a little too sporty lol). Also, just as a data point, I’m in the metro Detroit area and I pay quite a bit more than you. When I first got it I was paying $98/month but I’ve changed jobs and have a longer drive now, between that and a number of road trips I’m averaging more than 24k miles / year and my rate now is $198/month.

      It’s not big brother. If you’re an unsafe driver, you should pay relative to your actual risk profile. If you owned an insurance company, you’d want to know who you’re unsafe drivers are too. It’s not fair to the rest of us with a brain to be charged for the a-holes who blow the risk averages out of the water. Tesla, unlike all the other insurance companies, shows you exactly how they judge you, how all the calculations work and what is affecting them. Try using your brain and life becomes more rewarding.

      No, it will not. You get bumped only if you add more than 1kw or 10% of the arrays rated generation capacity. However, as panels lose efficiency you can add more. For example, if you installed 10 kw system, you can add 1kw for a total of 11. But, if your system is actually only producing 9kw you can add 2 more. Just add the battery first, so you get a good idea about your generation cap. You can always add to your array in the future.
