real estate and hair and video ideas - oh my! (plus all the books I’ve been reading)
Happy Darn Wednesday! I just wanted to catch up a bit after my sick and talk about what's going on for me right now. It's a heck of a thing! If you're only here for budgeting, no problem. I'll do another video on that shortly. If you're up for about 10 minutes of chatter, though, you're in the right place! I even edited out all the yawns!

    For the Forgot to Budget target, it sounded like you want it to be a sinking fund. So you want the target to say “set aside another” 15$ per week, rather than refill. Refilling would mean that you would only have up to 15$ in there at a time. I’m only 3 minutes in so you may have already figured that out lol. They just updated those targets to make it more intuitive but it can be confusing for people just getting used to it.

    • @midlifeadulting
      @midlifeadulting 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Love it! Careful of words like "will," "should," "want to"--those take it from something you ARE doing (which is how you want the affirmation to read) to something you hope to do someday, but maybe not today. Hope that makes sense! (I got a few 🐿 myself!)

    I'm glad the the reorganised categories are working for you - it helps to see things in order of importance/immediacy to guide you where to assign any new money to. I see that you have quite a few annual categories set up with targets and YNAB is indicating the monthly amounts which should be assigned to work towards having the total required by the time it's due, but most have nothing assigned yet despite being small amounts individually. Is there a reason for not funding them? The idea of funding them incrementally each month is to avoid larger shocks when the annual payments are due. Nice to see you so positive about how it's going - you're doing a great job!

    • @midlifeadulting
      @midlifeadulting หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for stopping by! To answer your question, I'm still getting used to YNAB and how it works best for me. If they have nothing assigned yet it's because I chose not to. I do understand that the idea is to fund things monthly. I'm just not there yet! 💖✨

    A friend of mine had a daily prayer that was similar to an affirmation. She was a massage therapist and would pray for her higher power to send her people she could help who could afford to pay her. I love the simplicity and specificity of this prayer. I appreciate you sharing your process in defining an affirmation that will work for you. It has me thinking about one for myself. Wishing you well on your journey with your TH-cam channel! Editing to add that she was my massage therapist. Sadly, she passed away a couple of years ago. I’ve yet to find a massage therapist to replace her, but all in due time. Today I am grateful for the opportunity to remember her and share a tiny bit of her wisdom with you. Happy Mother’s Day! Hope you and your children and your mother. Enjoy any time you have together today.

      I love that! I am not a prayer person, but I love that they had that to work for them. For me, since they are affirmations, they are keeping me focused on the subject of the statement. With that focus, I put more work into those areas. And with that work, I create positive results. I'm sorry to hear that she passed away. I appreciate your wisdom, and offer you a Happy Mother's Day as well (or a Happy Sunday, whichever is most appropriate for you)!

    Your new budget looks beautiful!! That is the great thing about YNAB, that you can completely customize it to what works for you. I think all YNABers change their budget all the time, because your priorities change all the time. For that YNAB target I don’t know if it’s set to repeat or not, that could be the issue. But if it were me I would delete the target and reset it for the new payment date.

    • @midlifeadulting

      Thank you! Yeah, once I get more comfortable, I'll probably definitely be rearranging again. :) I ended up creating a new YNAB category and then deleting the one that wouldn't stop being green. Moved that transaction to the new category, and boom! All is well! Thank you for the suggestion!

    Overhaul looks great! 1. YNAB - delete your target and set it up again for the new year. That will solve that problem 2. I have a ton of domains for godaddy too. I have a domain category group and then each domain is listed in there with its own due date 3. Have you played with filtered views yet? You can create a view for all your bills due in the first 2 weeks and then a view for the last 2 weeks.

    On the target, I suspect you had set it up initially where the due date for the target was BEFORE the money actually was spent. When this happens, YNAB counts the spending for the current year, not the prior year. Your best bet honestly is to delete the target and re-create it.

    • @midlifeadulting

      Just to expand on what monchichi says, the issue is the Needed for Spending target type. This target type says "Assign $X in this category by x date, but it's OK if you spend up to this amount along the way". For the YNAB category, the target says: Assign $104.93 before Feb 2025. It's OK if you spend this amount before Feb 25". I'm guessing that you set up the category and target during your 30 day free trial. The free trial came to an end, and then you assigned and paid the annual fee. In the target's mind, you've fulfilled your obligations: you assigned $104.93 before Feb 2025. Delete and recreate the Needed for Spending target with the new date of Feb 2025. Making a new target will ignore any previous assigned and spend money, and completely start afresh. Another option is to use the Savings Balance target type with a due date of Feb 2025. This target type is a bit more straight forward. It says "Have $104.93 in this category by x date. Do not spend from it along the way, and if you do, I will increase how much you need to put aside each month to ensure that you have $104.93 by Feb 25". Your new budget looks great by the way! Redoing your whole budget categories when you are learning how to do YNAB is the YNAB-way, and I think you're going to find YNAB a lot easier to use. Just be careful to use the right target types (as well as dates) because that's what was tripping you up in your last budget :)

    For YNAB target you need to change the date to 2/26/25.

      Oddly, it still says "fully spent", even when I correct the date to when it's supposed to auto-renew in 2025. >.<

      When I can’t figure it out, I delete the Target and start over. Sometimes the timing gets mixed up. I suspect it’s a user error on my part, but there are times I just can’t figure it out.

    When you cover overspending, cover the categories before you cover the credit card category. If you overspent on credit card, both the category and the credit card card will show overspending. As you cover the overspending in the category, the overspending in the credit card will go down. Also, May gets changed because you started to change April’s overspending.

    That's the beauty of YNAB - make it work for you! I don't date my bills because it's not too many (and I'm neurotic and pay constantly), instead I usually put the amount of it so like "$1500/mo: Rent", "$350/chk: Groceries", etc. On the left where my CCs are, I put it as "4th: CSP", "10th: Cap1", etc.

    • @midlifeadulting
      @midlifeadulting หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ooo, that's an interesting idea. I should probably take a note from the calendar I keep with bills and their due dates. It ends up looking like "Netflix, $21, AUTO", letting me know what, how much, and how it gets paid. (Opposite of AUTO is PMT for payment.) This is so cool. there are so many options! LOVE IT! Thank you!! 💖✨

      I actually do both! My fixed expenses look like this: Date Due-Payee $Amount 13- LCNatural Gas $35 (Even though the amount of this bill fluctuates, I put the same target amount in every month and consider it part of my fixed expenses.)

  • @alareyn2979
    @alareyn2979 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yay! I think you are definitely getting better at understanding YNAB! I think on your last YNAB video you were trying to figure out the difference between off/on budget (people in the comments were using those terms including me), If I'm wrong forgive me 😊, but when you look on the bar on the left of YNAB you will see the word BUDGET with a number next to it. If your account is in that list underneath the word budget, then your account is on budget. When you see overspending in red in your categories that means that your overspending was payed with cash on hand(meaning checking account or actual cash) and that needs to be covered first. And if it's not covered then that is why the next month will be negative in ready to assign. When the month rolls over all the overspent categories will be turned to zero and the balance will be moved to ready to assign. When you see overspending in yellow that means your overspending was payed with a credit card. I think for the most part for you this has been credit card interest. If you don't cover the yellow overspending then when the month rolls over the balance will turn to zero and your credit card will have more debt. Keep going! It sounds like you got those transfers down now! Just another tip but you can also pin categories to the top of your budget in the YNAB app, just press and hold on your category and you'll see a little pop up menu. That might be an alternative to the widget, or in addition to.

    Outside is so nice when there's grass...I miss grass! That was the biggest mind shift, I think, that helped me when I started YNAB. To learn to start checking the budget instead of the bank when you go shopping to see how much money you have. It's how we end up "YNAB Broke" because we feel like we don't have any money when the app says we have $3 in groceries even if we have 5000 in checking and a fully funded emergency fund (which, spoiler, I totally do not! 😂) I will definitely check out his channel, thanks for the recommendation!
