Victory Cross Country - How I defeated buffeting!

Kansas Speedway Laps in Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody
The V-92 cruiser is the ONLY Victory ive seen any legitimate complaints about, mainly because they were the first bikes and part of a learning curve for Polaris. My Vegas has 34k and runs like a monster unleashed even with 20 years on her.
I own and love my 2011 Victory Vision! Wouldn't trade it for nothing! Owned it for about 3 yrs now. And went completely mad scientist had it completely rebuilt from the ground up. Built engine, trans, sound system and more. This Harley Killa is ready with only around 5k on the miles. 😊
The other thing i forgot to mention is that this bike is great for young and old. As all of us are getting older and the large 800 lb cruisers become too much to handle, this particular bike at something just short of 500 lbs gives us all what we want in terms of power, reliability, comfort and easy handling.
i had a 82 Magna which i bought used and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't ride it for a year and gave it away thinking i was going to get a new bike which never happened. I sorely miss the bike and some are available used. But nobody does a valve job on those bikes anymore, and so i haven't ventured to buy one. It would be great if Honda would bring it back retaining the shaft drive and some modernization such as fuel injection and rear disc brakes and possibly ABS as everyone is going in that direction. I would buy it in a heartbeat. Maybe we can all get together and put up a joint statement to Honda to bring it back which may make Honda take notice? I am game.
Great video. Thanks!
Absolutely awesome motorcycle powerful muscle bike but your motorcycle yellow color and silly flames 🔥 ruined the look . Horrible color. Awesome bike
You do make a great point and I back this idea. The large issue is one thing that Polaris can't get out of this.....$$$. The people that designed and built these fantastic bikes are not in charge of the purse strings at Polaris unfortunately.
Bring it back ...MAGNA 1000R all disc brakes .factory fly screen !!!
Excellently done
Thank you!
To me, the Madstad was instantly beautiful the moment I first rode with it. I bought my XCT about 9 years ago and I really disliked looking through the stock barn door windshield and it was also ridiculously hot. The Madstad solved both problems. I remove the hard lowers during summer months and I still find the buffeting tolerable up to about 80mph. It keeps me in check.
Thanks for sharing!
What size did you get? 11 inch?
I got the 13". Seems to work well for my 6' 2" frame but is also positioned low.
Honestly bringing the magna back would be insane sales. 2 Biggest reasons why people are scared/nervous to own them now are age and 4 carbs. With the rebel 1100 proves they still have a market for sporty cruisers. They should do away with the fury, rebel 300s. Also bring back 1100 shadows
Excellent ideas! Victory Cross Roads forever! 13 states last year😊
That is awesome!
I have a 2010 Victory cross country. Where did you get your lowers ?
Hey there. These were sold by Arlen Ness years ago. The closest you can get now is sold by witch doctors. They are the same shape but the different material. There is a link from my website if you'd like to check them out. www.chasingredline.com. Check out the gear section.
Nice vid! I have a 13 XCT also. 155k miles so far ! I still love all of her imperfections. it's her personality that comes out when im twisting the throttle on the twisty Mountain roads, and I love it!
That is awesome! Quite a few miles! Thanks for checking out the video. Which mountains do you typically ride?
I have owned two MAGNAS, Want a highway cruiser for a long ride. This bike will do it easy.
For sure! I've done many trips on this bike. Although, I had a windshield and Mustang seat on it at the time. Chewing up miles is no problem for this bike.
@@chasingredlineofficialhow is the suspension for long distance??
I ride a 2012 CCT and still have the hard lowers on. After some research I got the Madstad Victory Magnum design. the adjustment allows to set up for best protection for you and that design looks great. I purchased one size taller than the chart suggested which leaves the windshield closed the fairing at the bottom and gives you the height to hit the right placement. It helps the cosmetics of the set up .
Thanks for the comment. I agree that keeping it low helps to blend into the bike. I've really gotten use to the Madstad to the point where I enjoy the look.
The fix is blocking the airflow from below. I guarantee buffeting would be gone if you put the tour lowers back on and take off the fork mounted lowers. I have the forged bar lowers and make/sell filler plates that eliminate buffeting completely to the point that the only thing a windshield does is change airflow over your head based off the height with zero buffeting. I also tried and have the Madstad (along with 4 other windshields) with no complete fix prior to lowers.
Hey there, you mentioned that you make/sell filler plates. Feel free to pop your business information in the chat for others to see. The community might be interested in what you are using/making. Safe riding!
@@chasingredlineofficial I mainly just do it through Facebook messenger and promote them through some of the Victory pages. Not sure how I’d do that here? My last set is going out tomorrow and I’m getting a quote on how material is now because I’m guessing it’s gone up sadly.
Where did you get your smoked fork wind deflectors if you don't mind my asking? I like those 👍 I'm only finding matt black from Witch Doctors and someone else on eBay. Great info, thank you!!
Hey Greg, Arlen Ness used to sell them in smoked and clear versions. That is where I picked mine up. They stopped carrying them years ago. The closest I've found is the witch doctor version which you mentioned. As far as I can tell, the shape is almost identical with minor differences. The material is the biggest change. Hope the video helped!
@@chasingredlineofficial Thank you!! I'll go with those. Being a long time H-D guy, I really love this motorcycle. Thanks again for your help!! 👍🤟😎
Went with the Witchdoctor wind deflectors, huge help 👍 Had traded the short windshield for an 11" (can't remember the make) helped a bunch. Went ahead a got the Madstad setup with their 13" shield. Man we love it!! Rode 300 miles yesterday with speeds reaching about 85 mph a couple of times (to get around and away from a couple of semi trucks) no wind buffeting issues at all. I may turn in the deflectors in a little bit to add a little more air as we are in Arkansas today. That was our 300 mi ride yesterday. Oh and I wanted to add that we added an ultimate seat with their driver backrest and passenger backrest pad. Man what a difference that made for my 61-year-old azz. Anyway thank you so much for the inspiration, it made the bike into what it should be hitting the road. I could have easily done 500 mi yesterday and I haven't been on a long trip in over 5 years. completely love it now. The first ride home with that shorty windshield on it and I'm 6'4, just had my head knocking around with the helmet like I was a bobblehead lol.. Thank you so much for the great video, and I have shared it and other people enjoyed it as well. Peace out And be safe out there!! 👍😎
@@GregG628 You just made my day Greg! I'm so happy that the video was helpful for you and that you love your ride. I was just in Arkansas last weekend and love it down there. Hopefully you found some awesome roads to play on. Stay safe out there!
My first bike was a 99 magna. I still have it and I love riding it
Thanks for sharing! What was your experience with it as a first bike?
Which lower / fork deflectors did you install. I want the same ones
Hey thanks for asking. These exact deflectors were sold by Arlen Ness years ago. They don't manufacture them any longer. However, the same design is sold by witch doctors but with a mat black color. I have them linked on my website gear page if you'd like a direct link to them. Safe riding!
What you doing with that mustang seat??
I actually sold it a while after buying the Victory. I had originally added the Mustang so my wife would be more comfortable. But now we take the Vic if she is with me. So went back to the Corbin. That Mustang was a very nice seat while I was touring with the Magna.
Man, that would have been nice to get from ya. Great video!
@@blackwellpride00 Thanks! Yeah it was a good one for sure.
Bought my first bike not to long ago from the old man down the road paid 300 for a 1984 Honda magna V65 1100 all I had to do was new fuel pump fuel lines and redo my tank fell in love with her as soon as my ass hit the seat and my palms touched her bars
Great purchase! 300 is a steal. Safe riding!
You're talking about wind buffeting are you talking about adding triple tree lowers or bar lowers? Thank you for the great review!! Coming off an 09 HD Ultra classic and looking at a 2015 Cross Country ABS not the touring model. I wonder if it has cruise control? Thanks again?!
Hey there! I actually did an entire video on buffeting on the cross country. Be sure to check that one out and I talk about my wind journey with this bike and lessons learned. Hopefully it gives you some ideas of what to expect or try. That cross country should have cruise so you should be good there. Just test all the button panels for cruise and radio control. Come back and share if you end up buying one and what your experience is! Safe riding!

Victory yes! Polaris sucks!!!
I've done the SaddleSore 1000 twice, but then failed to send in the paperwork. And now I'm thinking about a 50cc and a Border-to-Border.
Back in 2022, I did 3 Iron Butt rides. My first was a 1600km (1000miles ) in Aug and in sept, I did two other Iron Butt Rides of 2000km each, all under 24 hours. In Canada, we have more choices and this year, I should make my 2500km (1500 miles) ride. I was 60 when I did my first Iron butt rides and my bike is my 2012 Goldwing. All my rides have been about the same, at first, the thrill of starting, after one or two hours of riding, the question of if I should turn back. One thing to make sure is finding gas stations opened 24 hours on our route, because you don't want to be out of gas during the night. Then again, the thrill of being in the wind for over 15 hours will be hard on the body and that is why I use my rain gear to keep me warmer overnight.
Thanks for sharing about your rides! I spent many years riding next to a Goldwing (my father) and they've always held a special place for me. I understand how that 2-3 hour window can cause doubt when you have so far left to go. Did you do all three rides alone or did you have a friend join along for any of them? Safe riding!
@@chasingredlineofficial I was alone, therefore, I could leave when I was ready and stop when I felt it was time. My first ride, I stopped at a McDonald for a lunch and spent half of my way back looking for bathroom because I had to go. 1639 km (1018 miles) took me 18h41. My two other 2000km Iron butt rides took me 21h27 and 22h04. One took longer since I had to look for a gas station open.ed 24 hours
@@pascalmonier4642 I love how you have the data handy. Great rides!
@@chasingredlineofficial I did them alone and was glad about it. My first 1600, I spent half of my way back looking for toilets since my McDonald did not pass as I expected. My second IBR was my 2000km and I lost my camera 3/4 way back and I explained Iron Butt people with a Google Map outline and my stop list with my receipts. My third ride was another 2000km with all was great, but I also had my SWT (spotwalla) tracker I could send to IBA with an my road outlined.
Music sucks

I have this same jack that I used for a previous bike. It works very well, I never experienced the hopping motion during lowering like you did. My only problem is I now have a 2016 Magnum and it’s too low for the jack. I have to air up the rear shock to the max or drive the rear wheel up on a 2X4, but it works.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. It would be nice if the jack went just a bit lower. I'm glad you aren't experiencing the jumping. I'm wondering if it is just hit or miss depending on what unit you get. I do find that i don't get as much of it when I life lighter bikes such as the Magna. A 500 pound bike seems to be more forgiving. But your Magnum should be the same weight as this XC so... Ride safe!
I had the same issue on my 13 XC and gave it a year to fix the wind management or I was done, as much as I loved the bike. Headaches overrode the enjoyment. Bike came with a Klokwerks 12” with a flip that looked good but wasn’t keeping my head from trying to come off at highway speeds. I tried the fork mounted wind deflectors and I just don’t care for the look. I tried the triple tree deflector and it helped. I considered my helmet as a possible contributor (Bell Rogue) which I really liked but not as much as becoming buffeting free. Switching to a modular helmet helped but didn’t eliminate it. I’m making progress at this point but not quite there yet. A friend suggested getting lower fairings but I didn’t want to spend the money and I don’t care for the look. I tried a friends bike with lowers and I still had the buffeting 🤷🏼 I finally came across somebody saying they found the holy grail of cross bike wind management in a Madstad windshield. As you may have noticed, I’m particular about looks as well as eliminating the buffeting and I wasn’t impressed with the Madstad look but I ordered one (9” smoke) and put it on. Ran out to the freeway with it adjusted all the way down and hammered it to 80 for about 5 miles. Pulled off and adjusted the shield all the way up and ran it back down the highway again. I didn’t notice a difference with it high over low so I dropped it down again just for appearance. I had found the sweet spot thanks to the Madstad.
Thank you for telling your story Kris! Sounds like you've found a good solution with the Madstad and you are a great example of sticking with it until you find the sweet spot. Safe riding!
Informative video, but the Victory Octane is a derivative of the Indian Scout and not the other way around. Therefore, in this case, the Indian DNA is in the Victory model.
Thanks for the comment. The general understanding is that the Scout motor was originally R&D'd for Victory. However, it was held back and released as an Indian Scout first in 2015 which was about the same time of Victory Project 156 using that prototype motor with higher displacement and significant modification. The Octane was then released in 2017. Given the direction, it was likely a strategic move to place the motor in an Indian first given the hype and marketing around the brand. There is a group of folks that also claim that the PowerPlus 108 was originally intended to be the Freedom 108 but was pivoted to the Indian Challenger. That theory originates from sketches as well as the discussion that there was a new motor in the works leading up to the Victory shutdown. Without having confirmation from Polaris, I could not confirm if that is true or not. If you have any additional information or would like to poke holes in any of the items above, please share. Purely based on release dates, you aren't wrong if we went off of that alone. Cheers!
Thank you for the detailed answer. I am mainly referring to the bike as a whole, but it is of course also possible that the engine was already under development by Victory. My assumption is mainly based on the book "Indian Americas First Motorcycle Company". The book documents the development and thought processes for the Scout. There are some pictures of the first Scout clay models from the design development with the engine. It is also described that Polaris strictly separated the development of Victory and Indian in order to do justice to both brands. This may be true or it may just be marketing. Either way, they are both beautiful bikes.
Love the intro music!!
Thanks! Go Jayhawks!
Wow good stuff ! Like Witch Doctors too and Rylan and the" Vic Shop" its like the field of dreams for Vics out there in Iowa.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad we have some good spots still supporting these bikes! Rylan is a boss!
I am 6'3" ,I've tried all that on HD,Indian and Vics it was always trade off of kinda helps vs looks. So I just go ride my Himalayan (which I love) then when I get on the cool short windshielded Vic it's like wow this is nice!
Ha! Going from the Himalayan to the Vic would be quite the relaxing flip! But I do bet that Himalayan is a fun ride!
Use a good quality heavier weight hydraulic oil and that will slow the descent down and make it smoother. They probably ship wiith some cheap thin motor oil.
That wouldn't surprise me with these cheaper hydraulics. That is a good tip!
I've got about 250,000 miles on two different Vic XC's with the Madstad bracket - and I find that it's 50% of the equation when it comes to stopping the bad air. Fork deflectors are the other half from my experience. Recently I purchased my 3rd XC and I switched it up on the lower half. I made some wind deflectors that mount where the factory fairing wings mount - onto the bottom two bolts of the inner fairing. They basically block wind in the same area as the factory wings when they're fully closed. Those are working exceptionally well without lower fork deflectors at all. However - I might be getting more heat in the seat. I've always heard folks complain about engine heat on the XC, but I never experienced it. This is a new bike to me, so maybe it just runs hotter. I don't know. So...I'm going to switch these out and try my trusty old fork deflectors to see if the heat problem dissipates.
Hey there, thanks for sharing your experience. I'll be curious what you find on the heat issue when you do your testing. There have been a lot of thoughts shared on the channel around heat and I also haven't really felt that. With that said, I've had those fork deflectors on for most of this bike's lifespan. Ride safe!
Super
Well Done ! Im sure you have helped a lot of other Victory owners !
Thank you! That is my goal. At the same time, I've learned so much from the community through their comments. Safe riding!
I cant hear the Vic tic?! What did you do to remove that?
Interestingly enough, I've never had that problem in the 11 years I've owned the bike. What I can say is that I have the stage 1 setup which may contribute to the result. That includes the performance reusable filter, triovals, a flash, and I always use Victory oil.
I had a 97 magna. It's my very favorite. Of all bikes.
Thanks for tuning in! I can't get myself to part with it. Would you consider getting one if they released an updated version?
Thanks for the video. i rock a '13 cc witk a klockwerks w screen, helped somewhat, definitely going to check out the Madstad products
I'm glad the video helped! If you try it out, be sure to report back on your experience. It would help the community to hear about your results. Safe riding!
Do you have any clips with another mike? I don't know what a Magna is like irl but in this clip I don't hear the great sound discussed.
Hey there, thanks for the comment. Interestingly enough, the sound clip in my video intro is from the Magna. There are no baffles on those pipes so it definitely is not a stock Magna sound. I'm planning to do more videos on the Magna this season so stay tuned!
I have a couple of friends who have these bikes. One guy is 7 ft tall. They both love them and plan on keeping them.😊
So comfortable for taller riders! That is one reason I simply won't get rid of this bike. The footboards also are perfect for those with large shoe sizes. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely love my '13!! Getting ready to take it Cross Country!!!
13 was a great year! Be safe on your ride. Where are you heading?
@chasingredlineofficial 2 places are a definite, San Bernardino, my mom lived there when she a girl. She passed 3 years ago.. And San Diego, I want to watch the sun set and ride the coast line. I live in VA and have never been that far. Texas and South Dakota is my furthest.
@@darrellandes8831 I'm sorry to hear about your mom. Sounds like quite the adventure. Enjoy my friend and be safe out there! Those sunsets are hard to beat.
